WELCOME BILLY WOOD CHAIRMAN

Welcome all to The Continental Pilot Field.
It’s been an odd start when it comes to home games this year, as I feel like we’ve barely been here so far but it makes it even more special today being back home with you all.
I would like to welcome all from Bishop’s Stortford, a team that have started the season very well, sitting on top of the pile. It’s our job to stop that and I’m confident we can.
The club is doing all it can on and off the pitch to be competitive and with the form we are showing I think we are just doing that fine.
It was great to progress in the FA Trophy, penalties are always nerve-wracking but not when you have players like Jack Dixon and Sammy Adams stepping up!

We have become masters again of keeping clean sheets but I’m sure it won’t be long before we are firing in more goals to keep you entertained. If I’m honest I’ll take 1 nils every week!
Keep being the best support around, you truly are amazing home and away.
Let’s be loud, proud and UNITED!

GARY ELPHICK THE GAFFER

Afternoon and welcome to today’s match against Bishop’s Stortford.
For me these have been the standout team of last month, they play very good football, but also work hard for one another, meaning they are hard to break down. This will be a tough game for us, but are the kind of team we should relish to cut our teeth against.
We’ve obviously also been in good form and our clean sheet record is one that the whole squad should be proud of. We know though we’ve got to attack with better fluidity and take our chances when they come.
A quick mention for Craig Stone who played his 100th game a couple of weeks back. He has been a marvellous servant, a great player, but more importantly is a great human being. Hopefully he has many more games to come with us.
Onwards and upwards!

GUT FEELING SIMON STODDART’S
My views - not United's - on semi-pro football and occasionally, other topics.

WE MEET AGAIN
That's been a while eh. Couple of weeks short of 10 years ago, 3rd November 2012 saw United away to this afternoon's opposition - Bishop's Stortford - in a 1st Round FA Cup tie. We were Ryman Premier while Bishop's Stortford played a level higher in what is today's National North. United came back from a goal down to win 2-1 with goals from Sean Ray and Zac Attwood. Attendance that afternoon was 1,212.
That, of course, was the season United played 8 FA Cup ties with their final involvement being the memorable 3rd round fixture away to Middlesbrough. A memorable season for various reasons - the 2nd round replay here against Harrogate in front of 4028 spectators (2986 at their place), the big day at The Riverside and - depressinglythe eye taken off the ball as United ended up relegated to Rym an South. Too many drawn games were to cost United.
Nine seasons it took us to get back to step 3 and today sees us taking on a much fancied Bishop's Stortford who, having given Worthing a good run for their money last season - will be hoping to go one better this time around.
A look at their history shows they are one of those clubs who's geographical location sees them getting shuffled around with ups and downs of relegation and promotion thrown in. They had initially been a Conference South club, were shuffled sideways to Conference North, were relegated to the Southern Premier a few years later (prior to the recent formation of Southern Premier Central and South) and then moved sideways to the Isthmian Premier. Southern Premier Central might appeal to them more. Today's trek must be one of their longest.
Dicko was on the United bench for that FA Cup tie 10 years ago, incidentally.
LA LIGA FOR UNDER £100
Following professional teams - especially Premier League - must set you back a few quid. We all work with people who follow various sides at all levels - no exception here, I work at Network Rail's Three Bridges Area Signalling Centre with 70 or so colleagues. And yakking away with Luke the other evening, h e told me about his recent visit to the San Siro to see Inter Milan vs AS Roma.

Unbelievable but true - flight, ticket and a hotel room (albeit described as 'gross' by Luke) came to £99.33. £55.50 return with Easyjet, £34.50 and £9.33 for the overnight stay. That's not bad eh?
Luke was a Manchester Utd season ticket holder - yes, a real United supporter, until recently. He seems to have turned into a groundhopper - and up and down the leagues he hops. San Siro on 1st October, Herne Bay vs Lewes on Tuesday evening!
Luke (right) with his two ground hopping buddies at the San Siro. AS Roma won with a late winner from Chris Smalling who played locally for Maidstone before getting up into the professional game. Luke's claim to fame is playing school football against Smalling. Change from a ton - not bad!FACEBOOK HAS ITS USES
Above are two blasts from the past - Spencer Mintram (left) and Mat Ball who were two stalwarts for Hastings Town back at the turn of the century.

They both came from Worthing - Mat was with Town quite a bit longer. Two top players. Mat lived round the corner from me and I would quite often give him a ride home from the Pilot Field. Found this picture in Facebook. There's an awful lot of brain dead material in FB but it does have its uses and seeing this pop up was fantastic. All the best to both of them.
BACK TO LEAGUE ACTION
A win on penalties at Met Police sees United into the 1st Round of the FA Trophy. The devaluation of what is the prime semi pro knock out competition illustrated by a 0-0 draw being settled with penalties - no replay. Oh well, £2450 prize money and an interesting 1st Round tie here awaits in a fortnight when Burgess Hill call in.
Yes, league points at stake after two weekends of A, nothing due to our early FA Cup exit and B, Trophy tie at Met Police. Other sides have been playing for league points and we now have 3 games in hand in some cases.
The league is still taking shape. After the midweek games, United are 9th and we would all have taken that as we adjust to the demands of a higher standard of football. Too early to look at favourites etc. Everyone seems beatablePotters Bar and Aveley both lost this last week and biggest surprise of all is seeing Lewes misfiring. Hammered 4-0 at Three Bridges in an FA Cup replay - who saw that coming - they were 4-0 down at Herne Bay on Tuesday night after 41 minutes! Conceded 3 in 6 minutes! Oh well, we'll let them worry about that.
Continuing briefly on the FA Cup theme - Three Bridges had a decent draw for the next roundhome to Hereford United. Bridges average maybe 120 for league games, they have EFL2 Crawley next door virtually, so Hereford was a good one to get. The two league gap between Isthmian SE and National North eventually made a difference as Hereford won 3-0 in front of 746 spectators. Good pay day for the Bridges.
NOT A DROP
Remarkable brain - beer - hand coordination skills by Andy Boswell who managed to celebrate goals against Brightlingsea Regent and Carshalton without spilling a drop it would seem …..
Check that out - Sam Hasler has just got the winner against Carshalton, the Steve Smith end erupts but Andy achieves 100% beer retention. What a talent! I might add that Ashley in the orange - son of Andy - appeared to manage full beer retention too.

LITTLEHAMPTON & CO SETTLE IN NICELY

I work with a bunch of railway mates who follow various clubs and inevitably am subject to 'Hastings Who?' comments. I've been fighting the semi-pro corner nearly 45 years now and it's always good to see someone get into their local side.
Trevor is a West Ham season ticket holder who has recently gotten into Littlehampton who had a season to remember last year and are now making a decent fist of life in Isthmian SE. Not such a good day recently at Haywards Heath where they lost 2-0 to probably the best organised side we played last season. Cray Valley played the best football but Haywards Heath were the best organised.
They still print a programme and a very respectable one it is too.
ON THIS DAY OCTOBER 15
1887
The date of one of the bestknown scorelines in the FA Cup.
Preston North End 26 Hyde United0
in a First Round tie at Deepdale.
Not only was it the top score in the FA Cup but also the highest score in a senior match in England. Preston were the topdogs of the day.
They played in eight FA Cup matches that season (one was declared void) scoring 56 goals with Jimmy Ross himself scoring 20 of them, 8 of them in the Hyde match.
They reached the final and legend has it they were so confident of victory they asked to have a picture taken of them with the FA Cup before the match was played. Referee Major Marindin said 'Had you better not win it first?' and of course Preston were beaten 2-1 by West Brom!

While I still see digital eventually ruling the programme roost, it's good to see clubs continuing with the traditional version.
BISHOP’s STORTFORD FC
Club: Bishop’s Stortford Football Club

Club Formed: 1874
Nicknames: The Bishops or Blues

Ground: (Capacity 4,000)
The R & D UK Stadium, Bishop’s Stortford
The club was formed on Thursday 28th January 1874 at the Chequers Hotel in the town. Just over two weeks later the first match was played with the East of England Non-Conformist Grammar School (now Bishop’s Stortford College) being defeated 2-1, with goals coming from Rev. R J Tomes. In that first season 15 games were played, three of which were won, with seven others drawn. The club colours at that time were vivid crimson and olive green. After several years of playing just friendly matches the club became one of the founder members of the Hertfordshire Football Association in 1885 and played in the first ever County Senior Cup competition that same season, beating Aspley 2-1 away from home in their first match.
The club progressed into league football in the 1890s by joining a succession of locally based competitions. The highlights between 1889 and 1929 were the “double” seasons in 1912-13, when both the Saffron Walden & District League and the Stansted & District League titles were secured, and 1919-20, when the East Herts League and the Stansted & District League were won.
The club was accepted into the FA Cup for the first time in the 1924-25 season and then it was in 1929 that the next milestone was reached when the club was accepted into Division Two (East) of the Spartan League. A good start was made with the Ministry of Health being well beaten 5-0. Three years later, at the end of the 1931-32 season, the Division Two (East) championship was won and with it promotion to Division One of the Spartan League. A year later Stortford won the Herts Senior Cup for the first time.
In more recent times, the club was relegated to Isthmian League Division 1 at the conclusion of the 1991-92 term, but with ex-Arsenal star John Radford now as the Blues manager Stortford regained Premiership status by winning the Division 1 championship in season 1993-94. Life back in the Premier Division was not easy, with a best position of 12th being achieved in season 1995-96. Off the field the club suffered

delays moving to its new ground at Dunmow Road having left the Rhodes Avenue ground at the end of 1997, which they had been at since 1919.
After 18 months during which home league matches were played at Boreham Wood, St. Albans City, Hitchin Town, Dagenham & Redbridge and Ware, the club were once again relegated to Division One at the end of the 1998/99 season. But a new and eagerly awaited chapter in the club’s history began on Saturday 17th July 1999 when the new Woodside Park Stadium finally opened with a pre-season friendly against Norwich City. The match ended in a 2-2 draw in front of a 918 crowd.
On Friday 3rd September a crowd of 2,444 saw the official opening of the stadium performed by George Graham followed by a match against a strong Tottenham Hotspur side including Hans Segers, David Ginola, Chris Armstrong, Ruel Fox, Jose Dominguez, Mauricio Tarico, Steffen Freund, Stephen Clemence and Justin Edinburgh. Blues made the record books on Thursday 30th December 1999 when they won 5-3 at Chertsey in a Ryman League match, which was the last competitive match played in England in the 20th Century.
The club, supporters and team finally settled in at Woodside Park but only after some serious problems with the pitch had seen many postponed games and fixture headaches in those first two seasons. In the 2000/2001 campaign, Blues came with a late challenge after making wholesale squad changes at Christmas and narrowly missed out on a promotion place. However, by season 2001/2 the playing surface was immaculate and hosting Ryman and England representative games along with many local and junior league cup finals and Blues themselves were faring better in the League. Promotion back to the Ryman Premier after a three years absence was secured on the 6th April 2002 with a 2-0 home win against Walton & Hersham.
The 2002/3 campaign saw Blues back in the Premier Division and the near disaster of the Rhodes Avenue sale and ground sharing were fading in the memory. On Tuesday 14th January
2003, Martin Hayes team travelled to Tring in the semi-final of the Herts Charity Cup and recorded the club’s best ever win in a competitive match away from home with a 9-1 victory. Blues fortune in that cup continued as Hemel Hempstead Town were defeated 3-1 in the May final and Captain Rob French lifted Blues first silverware for six years. Back in February, the club had sold star striker Vinnie John to Hornchurch FC for a club record fee.
2003/04 saw the restructure of the football pyramid with Blues among the founder members of Conference South thanks to an 11th placed finish and manager Martin Hayes led them to first round proper of the FA Cup where 600 Stortford fans saw them go down 6-0 at Mansfield Town. In April, exactly 30 years to the day that Blues won the last ever Amateur Cup Final at Wembley Stadium, Stortford retained the Herts Charity Cup by defeating Cheshunt 4-1 to match that Wembley scoreline. The last game of the season saw tearful scenes as the fans said goodbye to midfield supremo, inveterate goalscorer and triple winner of the ‘Player of the Season’ trophy, Glen Southam. His £20,000 fee to Dagenham & Redbridge set a new club record.
A brave new world opened for Blues in August 2004 as they kicked off their Conference South campaign with a 2-1 win at home to Eastbourne Borough. It was a journey into the unknown with league trips as far afield as Weymouth and Newport but Blues held their own in the autumn with a position on the fringe of the play offs before finishing tenth.
By contrast the 2005-06 season was a disappointment and yet it ended with a trophy as the Herts Senior Cup was won for the first time in 20 years with a 1-0 win over Stevenage and the season was rounded off with a record Woodside Park league crowd of 1,016 as champions elect Weymouth visited. The Blues’ leading goalscorer at this time was Steve Morison who went on to play in the Premiership for Norwich City.
In 2006-07 the club flirted with promotion to the National Conference, the top echelon of non-league football. A top-six league finish led to a play-off semi-final against Salisbury City. The home leg, played in front of 1,049 spectators ended in a 1-1 draw with Greg Pearson scoring for Stortford. Back at Salisbury, the score was again 1-1 after 90 minutes. But two extra time goals saw Salisbury march to the final and the Conference. The FA Cup first round was reached, but Blues lost 5-3 againts Kings Lynn.
The 2008-2009 season saw Martin Hayes record 500 games and 10 years in the job. However, a shoestring budget and poor results led to his surprise dismissal and the promotion of reserve team manager, Mark Simpson assisted by Gordon Boateng. The new management team rung the changes and Stortford rallied to move from 20th in the league table to finish 9th.
Simpson remained at the helm until February 2011 during which time, in season 2009/10, Stortford again won the County Senior Cup. Simpson was replaced by ex-England and Spurs goalkeeper Ian Walker. A late three game winning run saw Walker save Blues from the drop and his side lifted the Herts Charity Cup with victory against Cheshunt. But the club
where hit by a bombshell at the Conference AGM in early June when they were placed in the northern section following the demise of Rushden & Diamonds. Despite the signing of future Premier League star Dwight Gayle and on-loan Spurs keeper Jordan Archer, Blues struggled in their new surroundings and with the team in the relegation zone Walker departed early in December 2011 following a 5-0 FA Trophy defeat at Isthmian League side Carshalton Athletic.
Under former Braintree boss Rod Stringer Blues had an excellent finish to the season, finishing tenth and winning both the Senior Charity Cups. The 2012/2013 season saw Blues drop to 17th as recruitment of players able to travel to the likes of Manchester and Workington on Tuesday evenings became an issue, but Stringers’s side did win their way through to the first round proper of the FA Cup before going out to Hastings United.
A return to Conference South saw a fine first half to the 2013/2014 campaign contending for a “play-off” place and reaching the 1st Round of the FA Cup once again. They were handed a tie at home to Northampton Town that was televised live on ITV and attracted a record crowd of 2,548. Form dipped in the New Year however when faced with playing 22 games in final 50 days of the season and they finished below halfway in the League table. A small consolation was that the Herts Charity Cup was won once again.
The 2014/2015 campaign was not a great one for the Blues but after some inconsistent form up until the last few months of the season they improved to steer clear of the relegation zone to ensure another year as a member of the Vanarama National South.
Stringer resigned after four and a half seasons at the end of the 2015/16 campaign to take charge of Chelmsford City. That season saw the Blues again finish around midway in the League table and win the Herts Charity Cup. Striker Elliott Buchanan was the top goalscorer in the league and won the Vanarama Conference “Golden Boot” award.
The 2016/17 season was a disaster for the club and probably the worst in the history finishing in the second-from-bottom place to be relegated to the Evo Stik Southern League after 13 seasons in the Conference set-up. Stortford had two management teams running affairs before ex Spurs, Swindon, Rotherham Utd, Reading and Colchester Utd midfielder Kevin Watson was appointed manager late in the season. Stortford did reach the Senior Cup final but lost 2-1 to Hitchin Town.
A first season in the Southern League saw Watson’s young side finish 18th in the 24 team league. A switch back to the Isthmian League saw former Witham Town boss Adam Flint step into the manager’s shoes but he failed to win a game and was replaced in mid-September by club owner Steve Smith and former Norwich City striker Jamie Cureton. The pair took the club to 7th place in the table, just missing out on the play-offs as well as reaching the league cup semi-final. Cureton celebrated the achievement of playing 1,000 competitive games in the 3-2 win against Brightlingsea Regent, netting twice on the way to finishing as leading scorer in the Isthmian Premier.

BISHOP’s STORTFORD FC

Smith took sole charge ahead of the two COVID hit campaigns, although the Blues did manage to reach the FA Cup First Round during those difficult years, eventually going out on penalties to National North side Brackley Town having had the BT Sport TV Camera’s in town for the previous round with a famous 2-0 victory over St Albans City coming in front of a sell out crowd 600, all that was allowed during the pandemic, with most fans having to settle for watching live on TV.
The 2021/22 campaign was one of the most memorable in recent years with a settled squad setting about on a remarkable campaign that saw the club taste defeat just five times in 42 league outings, amassing 87 points to finish second behind Champions Worthing. The clubs all time clean sheet record was also broken, with an astonishing 1088 minutes without conceding a goal during the season. Unfortunately the team fell just short, suffering injury time heartbreak in a 2-3 defeat at home to eventually promoted Cheshunt but with the bulk of the squad retained and new additions strengthening the playing options, the club are hopeful of going one better in 2022/23.

Hastings had to come from behind after Matt Johnson gave the Bishops a seventh-minute lead.
Player-manager Sean Ray volleyed Hastings level from a corner after top-scorer Bradley Goldberg had gone close.

11 Oct Prem Round Up by: Ian Townsend

Blue Tuesday!
We've away wins for Canvey and Margate, and four first half goals for Herne Bay as last Tuesday night went Blue.
Potters Bar Town needed just a point to take over from Bishop’s Stortford at the top of the table, so the fact that they sit in second place will tell you quite how many points they got as Canvey Island came to call. As we entered the very last minute the live table showed the Scholars sitting pretty at the summit, but just a moment later they were back in second, as Connor Hubble got a late, late winner for the travelling Gulls. Canvey had earlier taken the lead through Evans Kouassi just before the quarter hour, whilst Miles Mitchell-Nelson equalised on the stroke of half time - and that looked to be that, but Hubble knew different.
Enfield Town could have gone top given the Scholars fell to defeat, but they ended up in third after taking just a point against Bognor Regis Town at the QEII. The Rocks took the lead on fifteen minutes, Nick Dembele with the goal, only for Jake Cass to equalise from the spot five minutes after the break. That was that - six league matches unbeaten for the Towners, and the Rocks in tenth.
Our biggest win of the night came at Herne Bay, where the hosts walloped visiting Lewes by four goals to one. Bay were without a League win since August 16th, whilst the Rooks hadn’t delivered a bread and butter win since August 20th, and the visitors winless run continued as they sit only a point above the bottom four. Bay were irrepressible in the first half, Jack
Parter, Kieron Campbell and Tushaun Walters scoring in a six minute spell from sixteen to twenty-two minutes which must have stunned both sets of fans, albeit for different reasons. Rory Smith got a fourth from the spot four minutes before half time, and eight minutes from the end Joe Taylor got a consolation from the spot for the Rooks. Bay are out of the bottom four.
Corinthian-Casuals still can’t use their own ground due to storm damage, so ‘hosted’ last night’s visit of Margate at Leatherhead’s Fetcham Grove. Casuals hadn’t won since opening day and parted company with boss Tony Reid on Monday; whilst Gate had also lost their way a little, having drawn one of their last five matches in League, FA Cup and Trophy, losing the other four. Gate now have another win to brighten their morning, after Ben Greenhalgh got the only goal of the game from the spot six minutes after the break.
The Urchins had a magnificent September, taking maximum points, scoring thirteen goals and conceding only one.
Many congratulations to Mark and to all at Bridge Avenue, who have a shiny trophy heading their way.
The Vita Risk Solutions Isthmian Premier Manager of the Month for September is Mark Stimson, of Hornchurch FC.
