MATCH & MATCHBALL SPONSOR

WELCOME BILLY WOOD CHAIRMAN / CEO

It’s Isuzu FA Trophy day and I would like to extend our warm welcome to the committee, management, staff, players and supporters of Burgess Hill Town.
Firstly, thank you to the great crowd who turned up on Tuesday. The football on display by us was a joy to behold first half, but annoyingly the result didn’t go our way. We’ve played all the so-called ‘big boys’ in the league now and we don’t have anything to fear.

On that note we shouldn’t underestimate Town today, a good side with a decent manager who will be looking to cause an upset.
Sadly I’ve not been too well this week, hoping this isn’t the only way of hearing from me today as you all know I can’t stand missing games.
But regardless, let’s get that drum banging and the atmosphere roaring! COYU

GARY ELPHICK THE GAFFER

Afternoon all and welcome to today’s FA Trophy first round match against Burgess Hill Town.
This will be a highly competitive Sussex derby, and a tough one. Burgess Hill have picked up in recent weeks and are well organised. I’ve been expecting this, as Jay Lovett is a talented manager with a great backroom staff.
I feel that we’re coming off our best performance since I’ve been manager, and I would like for the momentum to continue today.
I’d also like to mention Kane Penn, he has scored 3 in 3, and it’s very much deserved. He is an unsung hero, and players like him are the type that good teams are built around.

Get behind the lads again please!

Onwards and upwards!
Gary

HAYLEY CLOUT COMMERCIAL DIRECTOR
Good afternoon everyone.
Welcome back to the Continental Pilot Field after a disappointing result at here on Tuesday night but positive thoughts and thinking going into today's First Round FA Trophy game with Burgess Hill Town.
I would like to give a quick mention and congratulate Craig, Jack and Ben on their milestone Club appearances and what a great achievement it is too.
I welcome and thank our Match & Matchball Sponsor for today's game, Becky The Youth Fairy Hastings
In Becky's own words here is a short story on The Youth Fairy
Hi, I’m Becky and I’m The Youth Fairy Hastings. I’m a solution focused therapist working with children and young people in Hastings, St. Leonards and local area. Having spent over 12 years as a secondary school teacher I became increasingly aware of just how much children’s mental health could be affected by a number of different life events and pressures. With the busy constraints of secondary school life, I felt like I wasn’t able to give these young people enough of the dedicated support and time that they needed and deserved to support their well-being and mental health. Which is what lead to me to re-train and become The Youth Fairy Hastings!
My work with young people gives them the tools they need to feel more in control. It also helps them to recognise their unique strengths, capabilities and to build the confidence they need to make positive changes and become the best version of themselves. As well as helping young people make these changes, I’m passionate about educating them on their mental health, which is such an important and essential part of the change process. By empowering them with this knowledge, we can help young people to develop more positive, healthy habits for life.
For more information about what I do as well as some free, helpful advice in The Parent Pad blogs then please check out the website www.theyouthfairy.com
We hope Becky and her guests enjoy their day with us and thank you for all your support both now and going into the future.
A big welcome and thank you to all our Mascots for today’s game who are players from our U10s Academy team. We hope you all have a great day with us and enjoy the matchday experience.

Enjoy the game and hopefully into the next round! ...
Hayley

GUT FEELING SIMON STODDART’S
My views - not United's - on semi-pro football and occasionally, other topics.

SAME AS SAME AS
The first half of last season saw us well adrift of the top 5 into around this time of the season. One point from 5 games against those top sides illustrated a real problem - not getting anything from those games was crucial and, as some may recall, after the Cray Valley defeat here - United were 13 points off the top.
As if you need reminding of how it all turned out. Well, right now it's all looking a bit similar. The 4 league defeats have all been against the current top 4. 7th in the league, just outside the play offs, you'd have grabbed that back in August as a season of higher standard football commenced with one point from our opening 3 games. But over all - despite Tuesday night's disappointment - we're a bit better off than we were a year ago.
I've been on a run of missed games beca use of work. Once again Footballwebpages and Twitter kept me up to date. When I think back to 35 - 40 years ago, it was quite often the following day before you got semi pro results. Unless you managed to get an Argus on the Saturday evening, of course.
Adam Carder gives live commentary but I can't listen to the radio at work - I've yet to sample the United Radio service ……
I will get round to it in time. I am like most of you able to see the goals after the game thanks to Joe Knight's video service and Chris Laverick does a fine job with his podcast. Well done all of you.
889 - superb midweek attendance. People understand United are adjusting well to a higher
standard of football and continue to turn up in excellent numbers. Two new faces on Tuesday evening - both from National South - Chinedu Mckenzie from Tonbridge and De Niro Pinto on loan from Eastbourne Borough. Prior to the Bishop's Stortford game there had been a loud buzz that Joe Gbode was on his way back from Gillingham and indeed he was shown in the United line up at Herne Bay on Saturday - only to be on the Gillingham bench from where he got 5 minutes against Barrow.
Interesting conundrum regarding Joe - doesn't get a start at Gillingham, usually on the bench while if he was here, he'd be getting 90 minutes. But he's like any young footballer - he's ambitious and EFL2 will always get ahead of Isthmian Premier. Whatever - we'd love to see him back here, eh!.
TROPHY TIME
The penalties win in the previous round at Southern League South Premier Met Police sees us renewing acquaintance with Burgess Hill who will have happy memories of their last visit here when a 1500 + attendance saw United go down 3-2.
Adam CarderA game that was won by the Hillians 16-year-old goalkeeper who had an exceptional game. On loan from Brighton, he was outstanding on an afternoon when United played a lot of decent football that would normally have been enough to win the game.
Ollie Black got both United goals in that game last season. Above is the first one. And here's hoping Burgess Hill don't have an outstanding goalkeeping prospect of - 17 on loan from Brighton! To rub salt in the wound - he is a Hastings lad!
The FA Trophy is usually a National League capture as you would expect but not always ....... Hornchurch still revel in their famous conquest of National North Hereford in the 2020-21 season's finale.

and United will want to end this little sequence of home defeats and avenge last season's game here.
Burgess Hill started badly last season and it's a similar story this season. All means nothing in a Sussex Derby.
44 DAYS
Brian Clough at Leeds and Liz Truss at No 10. And check this out - off the excellent @UpshotTowers which you will find on Twitter.

BREFTAKINGLY GOOD NEWS
Whatever, today's game is one neither side will want to lose, Sussex bragging rights once again
Alex Brefo signing on for the season - great stuff. He has been a top top addition to the squad. As for 'Breftakingly' er, yes, ok .....
Ollie Black nets the first of his brace against Burgess Hill Town back in January
25 Oct League Round Up by: Ian

Scholars go top!
Potters Bar Town hit the summit, Lewes slow down the Urchins charge, whilst managerless Wingate hit five! It’s our Tuesday night Premier Division round up.

Hornchurch were playing one of their many games in hand, at Lewes, where the Rooks retrieved a two goal deficit to take a point. The Urchins had won their last five league matches whilst scoring eighteen goals, and they added two more, Sam Higgins converting a spot kick nine minutes before the break with Ola Ogunwamide doubling their advantage five minutes after the restart. The Rooks then got going, Razz Coleman De-Graft finding the top corner on sixty five, and then with one minute remaining Joe Taylor got his customary goal. The Urchins hit the post in added time, but had to be happy with a point- and climb to third.
Image from James Boyes.
Potters Bar Town played their game in hand over leaders Bishop’s Stortford last Tuesday night - and they left Hastings with three points and a place at the top of the league!

The Scholars knew that victory would be difficult, as their hosts had conceded one goal in their last seven matches, winning six with clean sheets and losing only one, but they went ahead just before the break, Kasim Aidoo opening the scoring with a deflected free kick. On sixty seven minutes it was two, Tyler Christian-Law adding that one- but that finally got the hosts going and within four minutes they had one back, Kane Penn set up by debutant Chinedu McKenzie. A few minutes later and the hosts thought they’d equalised, but the referee decided that the ball hadn’t crossed the line - and the Scholars held on for a big three points.
At the other end of the table, managerless Wingate & Finchley put their first digit in the win column with a fine victory at Canvey Island at the weekend- and they must have liked the experience, because they repeated it in style against Brightlingsea Regent. They went ahead five minutes before the break through Dylan Kearney, and then went goal crazy in the last twenty minutes, Sam Cornish making it two-nil, Kearney getting a third and then adding a fifth for his hat trick four minutes from time, and Dernell Wynter getting the fourth. That’s eight goals scored and none conceded since former boss Marc Weatherstone departed last week, and at this rate the Blues won’t hurry in their search for a replacement. That’s two points from twenty one for the visitors, whoa re second from bottom and have conceded an average of just under three goals per game.
BURGESS HILL TOWN
Club: Burgess Hill Town Football Club
Club Formed: 1882
Preident: Peter Miles
Chairman: Kevin Newell
First Team Manager: Jay Lovett
Ground: The More Than Tyres Stadium
Capacity: 2,500 (408 Seated)
Nickname: The Hillians Championship by six points, having secured the Division Two title the previous season.
Burgess Hill Football Club was founded in 1882 and was a founder member of the Sussex County Football Association.

The club attained the unique achievement of winning the Sussex Senior Cup three years running thus retaining it permanently in the process. The cup is on display in the trophy cabinet in the club boardroom. The current trophy was presented to the S.C.F.A. by Burgess Hill Town Football Club.
In the club’s formative years they were also founder members of the Mid-Sussex Football League, and won the League Championship in its inaugural season.
Following several successful seasons the club joined the Sussex County League for the 1958–59 season, and stayed until attaining promotion to the Southern Football League in 2003. In 1969 the club amalgamated with Worlds End F.C. and with the help of Burgess Hill Town Council were able to move to Leylands Park, the club’s current home. In 1971, the club gained promotion to Division One, only to be relegated two seasons later.
1974 saw the ‘Hillians’ reach another landmark achievement by becoming the only club ever to have won both the League Challenge Cup and the Division Two Cup in the same season. In 1976 a hat trick of achievements were completed by winning the Division One
During the ensuing twenty years in the top flight of the County League success was modest. In 1980 the League Challenge Cup was secured and in 1992 the RUR Cup was added. However, all this changed in season 96–97 under the guidance of club manager, Alan Pook. The club became Division One champions by twelve points, won the Floodlight Cup, and were runners up in the League Challenge Cup. The 2nd XI finished runners up in the Reserve Premier and won the Mid-Sussex Charity Cup, while the Youth XI won their overall championship. In 1997–98, the club 1st XI attained even more success by again winning the League Championship and the League Challenge Cup, also reaching the last sixteen in the F.A. Vase. Additionally they reached the Sussex Senior Cup Final and were top of the county’s merit table. The Youth XI also finished as ‘Double Champions’ in the sector.
1998–99 season saw the Hillians achieve a unique treble in winning the Championship for a post war record third time and again securing a league and cup double, back to back. The 2nd XI won their cup and were runners up in the league, missing out by a single point. Not to be out done, the Youth XI won their league and only missed out on a double by goal difference. All in all an historic season.
The club then welcomed new manager, Gary Croydon for season 1999–2000. He led the Hillians to take runners’ up spot in the league and to a record fourth qualifying round FA Cup tie against Hereford United. Again, a last 16 place was achieved in the FA Vase as well as winning the RUR Cup and the Floodlit Cup.
The new millennium season saw Hillians take the league championship with the team remaining unbeaten in the league until April; the Club also had its best ever run in the FA Vase only being beaten after extra time by eventual finalists Tiptree United in the last eight, before a then club record attendance of 1598. With plans being laid for Southern League football, club directors, Gary Croydon and Eddie Benson appointed Danny Bloor as manager for season 2002–2003. The club was rewarded with yet another championship crown, the fifth in seven seasons.
Gary Croydon took over the Hillians again as the club entered the Southern League for the first ever time. After just missing out on the play offs, Burgess Hill Town moved over to the Isthmian League due to the restructuring of the non-league pyramid.
For the next few years the Club established itself as a Ryman League club with a few mid table finishes and twice just avoiding relegation. In 2011/12 with the Hill struggling and with seven games to go Manager Simon Rowland was sacked and GK Coach John Rattle was put in charge. The club survived relegation with victories in the last two games of the season against Whitstable Town and Dulwich Hamlet FC, both 1-0.
The following season, 2012/2013, the Hillians returned to their original green and black colours. Former Brighton & Hove Albion player and coach Ian Chapman was appointed as Manager and he guided the Hillians to eighth place in the table.
2013/14 saw the Hillians achieve their highest ever finish in the Football pyramid, finishing sixth in the table and just missing out on the play offs by one point. The newly formed Under 21 side finished third in the Ryman
U21 League whilst the Youth Team had their most successful season ever. They won the Ryman Youth League and the Ryman Youth Champion of Champions whilst also lifting the Sussex County Youth Cup. Two Ladies teams were also introduced as part of Burgess Hill Town FC and they enjoyed mid table finishes in their first season.
2014/15 saw the Club enjoy the greatest season in the Club’s History. Ian Chapman’s side were unbeaten in the league until mid – March and went on to win Ryman League Division One South title by 11 points and gain promotion to the Ryman Premier League for the first ever time. They also equalled their best – ever FA Cup run, eventually losing away to Dartford in the 4th qualifying round but having gaining a memorable 3-1 victory at Sutton United in the previous round. In the FA Trophy, the club reached the 2nd round, finally losing at home to Dartford FC. In the previous round the team had beaten Aldershot Town of the National League 1-0 away.
A confident start to the Hillians first season in the RPL before Christmas saw the team 8th in the league, but a disappointing second half saw them finish in 20th position. The club avoided relegation due to Farnborough FC being relegated for financial irregularities. The following two seasons saw the Hillians avoid relegation on the last day of the season to keep its Isthmian Premier status. The Hillians did enjoy excellent cup runs in the FA Cup both seasons narrowly missing out on the FA Cup 1st round proper.
After four seasons in the Isthmian Premier League, the club were relegated in the 2018/19 season. The season was full of mixed emotions, with the long standing management team of Ian Chapman and Stuart Tuck leaving the club after six very successful years. Ian was replaced by Ex-Lewes manager, Simon Wormull. Under Wormull, the team rallied over the Christmas period and towards the end of season with some spirited performances. The team also reached the Parafix Sussex Senior Cup for the first time in some thirty years but lost 2-1 to Bognor Regis Town in extra
BURGESS HILL TOWN

time at the Amex Stadium. The U18’s also reached their own Sussex Cup Final, losing 1-0, to Lewes.
The 2019/20 season started off with a 7-2 opening day victory over Hythe Town. Unfortunately, disappointing results followed, as well as early exits in both the FA Cup and FA Trophy, which saw Wormull depart in late October. Jay Lovett was appointed as First Team Manager in November – following a successful spell in charge at South Park. His arrival saw an improvement in results and encouraging performances heading into the back-end of the season. A global pandemic drew the campaign to a premature close, with the Hillians sitting comfortably in mid-table.
After a few years of frustration as the Covid pandemic swept the nation, the 2021/22 season was a welcome relief as we finally completed our first full season back in the Isthmian South East division. It was a sluggish start to the campaign for Jay Lovett’s men with victories in the league proving hard to come by. Thankfully, success was coming in both the FA Cup and the FA Trophy. We made it to the 2nd qualifying round in the FA Cup before falling to National League South side Dorking Wanderers. In the FA Trophy, we went a round better making it to the third qualifying round where we fell to Canvey Island. We took this momentum in the cups over to the league and eventually picked up our first win in October away to Ramsgate. From that point onwards we started to fly up the table and ended up missing out on the play offs by just 4 points, finishing in 7th place. Success was also coming off the field where we didn’t see a league crowd at Leylands Park lower than 252 and we ended the season averaging over 400.

MARTYN BOx DAN PERRY MAx MILLER League News by: Ian TownsendChinedu McKenzie signs on at Pilot Field!
HASTINGS UNITeD have announced their second signing of the afternoon, bringing in striker Chinedu McKenzie.
Chinedu played for Bowers & Pitsea during the 2020-21 campaign - what there was of it - and started the 2021-22 campaign at Herne Bay, making five appearances.
He was at Folkestone Invicta and Leatherhead during 2019-20, after leaving Tonbridge Angels. His departure from Longmead was confirmed in early November 2019, after he'd been at the club for ten months and was an important part of the squad that earned Playoff and Super Playoff success, scoring twelve goals along the way.
He made ten appearances for Angels in National League South at the start of 201920 before heading to Fetcham Grove.
Prior to his move to Longmead he was part of the Haringey Borough side that earned promotion to the Premier Division via the North Division playoffs, and went on to make twenty two appearances in yellow during their first Premier campaign before heading off to be an Angel.
He has also turned out for Burgess Hill Town, Greenwich Borough and Romford, amongst others.
De
Niro Pinto signs on at Hastings United!

HASTINGS UNITeD have borrowed a forward from neighbours Eastbourne Borough prior to Tuesday's match with Potters Bar Townalthough with seven goals from their last two matches you wonder whether they need one! De Niro Pinto arrives on loan from the Sports.

England have only had three internationals abandoned in their history and only one of those was a competitive match. On this day in 1975 a Euro qualifier in Bratislava against Czechoslovakia was abandoned after 17 minutes because of dense fog with the score at 0-0. The match was restaged the following day, England losing 2-1.
