WELCOME BILLY WOOD CHAIRMAN

/ CEO

Welcome everyone back to The Continental Pilot Field.

We welcome all from Cray, their directors, committee, management, staff, coaches, players and most importantly the supporters.

Big momentum shift the past couple of weeks with three wins and unbeaten in four, that’s football and we need to keep it up to give ourselves the best chance of playoffs.

Gary and the staff are really pushing with this great bunch of lads. Let’s get behind them.

Bill Farnfield sadly passed away, a colossal goalkeeper in the 50’s and 60’s here at the club and it was great having him part of our championship celebrations last season. Godspeed Bill! We will celebrate his life with a minutes applause.

GARY ELPHICK THE GAFFER

Afternoon and welcome to today's fixture against Cray Wanderers.

Cray are one of the toughest opponents we have faced this season, and I'm expecting this to be the case once again.

I've been very happy with our results recently but in all honesty I still feel there are major improvements to be made within our performances.

Two little things I want to add before closing my match notes. A big shout out to David Smith. He hasn't had the best of times this season at a previous team, but I feel his last two games have showed why he was a star in this league previously.

The last thing I want to mention is Tom Chalmers. Unfortunately, Tom has received some bad news recently about his knee and looks like he will have to undergo an operation. We as a club must get round Tom and help him as much as we can on his road to recovery.

Onwards and upwards! ... Gary

GUT FEELING SIMON STODDART’S

My views - not United's - on semi-pro football and occasionally, other topics.

YOUR PHILLIPINES CORRESPONDENT

How much am I missing the English winter? It's 31 degrees here in Las Pinas City so on a scale of 1 to 10, that'll be a 2 maybe.

I followed U's progress on Saturday with the invaluable aid of the Internet - Footballwebpages as always plus Twitter. Twitter, though, is soooooo hit and miss with it's updates - sometimes hours, a full day even, behind. But whatever, it's possible to keep up with the U's from 8,000 or so miles away

Not as fully up to date as I would like of course. Programme deadlines mean I have no idea how the boys did on Wednesday night at Imperial Fields where Kingstonian share with Tooting & Mitcham. Landlord and tenant both with relegation worries, in particular Tooting & Mitcham who are seeing a concerning gap at the very bottom of Isthmian South Central. Guernsey - who looked likely to go straight through Ryman South - as it was - 9 seasons ago are another big name fallen on hard times and they occupy a relegation spot too. League football with it's ups and downs is what it is, hopefully United will have extended their mini run of point gathering on Wednesday evening.

GROUND SHARING

Well, it's a red hot topic here of course with the prospect looming just a few months hence of United playing 'home' games at Eastbourne Borough. An awful lot depends on Hastings Borough Council as you U's supporters all know.

Frustration with the local authority goes back nearly 70 years as David Nessling's fascinating Facebook post recently showed ......

Headington mentioned in the very last line are today's Oxford United. In those days they were Southern League opponents of Hastings United Mk 1.

And today's opposition, Cray Wanderers, they are no strangers to the nomadic existence that is ground sharing. United's away game against The Wands was played at Bromley's Hayes Lane. All

being well they will be playing their home games at their new stadium starting next season - just 6 months from now.

Their journey here this afternoon will hopefully have not been too arduous (We would never be so vindictive as to wish the foibles of the A21 on opponents making their way here - er, would we ).

2018-2019 BOSTIK SOUTH EAST

That's what the Isthmian SE division was known as the last time we played Cray Wanderers here. Getting on for 4 years ago, they were comfortably winning the division and duly finished off 8 points clear .....

That was the season before all the disruption caused to - well, everybody - by Covid. Not that 18-19 was a disruption free season. The division

ended up a club short after the demise of Thamesmead Town and we had the joy of PPGPoints per Game, the ingenious formula dreamt up by someone, somewhere, somehow at FA HQ that saw clubs winning play offs only to be denied promotion. As it happened - in Bostik SE - PPG didn't destroy a season as Horsham went up after beating Ashford in the play off final. Ashford had won 3-2 here in a memorable semi final in which the U's led twice (1,123 attendance). Neither Ashford or United would've gone up had they won the final - Horsham's PPG was good enough so they went up with Cray Wanderers. Their season was rightly decided on the pitch instead of some FA clown's spread sheet.

For those who don't recall - this was all part of the restructure of the semi pro game. Lots of shuffling around and adjustments to the various semi pro leagues was to eventually see two step 4 play off final winners being denied promotion due to their PPG not being high enough.

Brighouse Town and Heybridge Swifts were the unlucky clubs denied the ultimate prize by FA spreadsheets.

Cray Wanderers had done the job the simple way - if that's the right way to describe it - they won the division by 8 points with just 4 defeats all season and sat back, relaxed and watched the play-offs unfold - like we did last season.

continued on P10

2018 -19, what a game here. March 16th, Wanderers 2-0 up after just 6 minutes, Sam Cruttwell with an edge of the box special gets the U's back in the game in the 9th minute, Davide Rodari levels on 24 and a great game is decided by Dicko in the 56th minute. What a comeback against a Cray outfit that was running away with the league.

491 attendance - a decent enough step 4 gate - post Covid we might have had one game with a gate that LOW! A still off a video shows United going close in that encounter - Nick Blue (in red) in The Wands goal breathing a sigh of relief. We were to see him again in that FA Cup tie at Beckenham Town last season. Indeed he was with them this season when they went up to Isthmian SE.

Wanderers had an indifferent season last year and have recovered well this time around after not starting too well. Well enough to get in the play off mix. They were at home to Folkestone Invicta on Wednesday night....... Whatever, they will want to put right United's 1-0 win at Hayes Lane earlier this season.

Included in the Invicta squad - Louis Collins

NEW BALLS PLEASE

Two of today's squad who featured in that Cray Wanderers game adjusting their Kevlar Boxers on an afternoon somewhere in Isthmian SE. Ollie Black and Louis Rogers the other twonot to forget the Gaffer at No 4.

In the Cray squad could be a couple of familiar faces. Bailey Akehurst was here on loan from Gillingham at the start of the season and back to pre covid times - Dajon Golding who played a big part in Worthing's promotion to National South last season.

THE CRAYS

Not the London twins - there is the chance of Cray Wanderers and Cray Valley PM encountering each other next season. Both are in contention for play-off spots in their respective divisions - if Wanderers miss out and Cray Valley go up - an Isthmian Premier derby to whet the appetite awaits. They will only be 3 miles apart when The Wands get into their new stadium on the A20.

GREAT ESCAPE

Not much. Tuesday night, Wingate & Finchley concede a third in the 75th minute at home to Bowers & Pitsea. 0-3, down and out.

THANKS VERNON!

Vernon Couchman does a lot of research on local football. Find him on Twitter ........

And at the Margate game here a fortnight ago, Vernon gave me a flash drive containing every Ghost fanzine. A lot of work to scan every page of 34 of em.

Hugely appreciated . Every now and then I delve into my collection which is missing at least one mag - for research or - as very occasionally happens - to reproduce a er, 'programme friendly' article. This will make life a lot easier.

Yea right. 82nd minute, 1-3, that meaningless consolation at the end of a stuffing. They only went and won it 4-3 with the winner in added time. Brilliant. Well done. Shame there were only 77 punters there to see it. SAY NO MORE ...

HISTORY

Cray Wanderers have been in exile from the Cray’s since 1973 when they lost the Grassmeade ground in Chelsfield Road, due to housing development. They moved to Oxford Road, on the borders of Footscray and Sidcup, but when that ground was ruled to be unsuitable for Step 5 football (the Wands were then playing in the Kent League) it became necessary from 1998/99 to play firs t team matches at Hayes Lane, as tenants of Bromley FC. However, an off the field victory was obtained in March 2018 as approval by Bromley Council was granted for a new Football Stadium/Community Hub at Flamingo Park in Sidcup which on Monday 26th November received a further boost when approval was given by the GLA (Mayor of London) giving the green light to a bright future for the club and community. The 2018-19 season saw Cray Wanderers now playing in the newly formed Isthmian South-East and were crowned the first champions of the division and despite a season of struggle in 2021-22 Cray retained their place in the Isthmian Premier for the fourth straight season.

The first origins of Cray Wanderers are linked to the construction of the London, Chatham & Dover railway line during 1858 to 1860. During their leisure time, migrant workers kicked a ball around, and that is how the club originated in the St Mary Cray village. The pitch at Star Lane is now a cemetery, and is located beneath the nine-arch railway viaduct that spans the Cray Valley. The industrial belt of the River Cray, especially the paper mills, provided much of the club's support up till the 1950s.

Cray Wanderers were a strong force in senior county football at the turn of the century. After being Kent Junior Cup semifinalists and finalists in 1890/91 and 1891/92 they entered the first ever FA Amateur Cup competition in 1893/94. They had a spell as a professional club between 1895 and 1907. They were a nursery club for Woolwich Arsenal during part of this period. They were one of the founder members of the Kent League in 1894/95, and they won the championship in 1901/02. Other honours included Southern Suburban League

champions in 1898/99, West Kent League champions in 1903/04, and Kent Senior Cup runners-up in 1899/1900. After World War One, Cray switched to the London League where they remained till 1934. In 1930/31 they won the Kent Amateur Cup. Cray rejoined the Kent League in 1934/35, but their four year stay came to grief when 1936 saw the loss of the Fordcroft ground in Cray Avenue, their home since 1898. Cray were forced to drop into a lower level of football, drifting from one temporary pitch to another while the club committee dwindled to a perilously small number. The team struggled badly in the South London Alliance and the Kent Amateur League.

1951/52 heralded a new era, and an upturn in the club's fortunes, when local businessman Mick Slater took over at the helm. The club was elected to the London League and regained its senior status. Cray moved to a new ground at Grassmeade in 1955. Their stay there was a very successful period in the club's history. Drawing extra support from the commuter town of Orpington, they played in the London League and then the Aetolian League. They were three times crowned champions, won the League Cup twice, and also won the Kent Amateur Cup three times. Cray switched to the semi-professional Metropolitan League for five seasons commencing in 1966/67. In 1971/72 a merger of the Metropolitan League and the Greater London League created the Met London League.

Cray moved to Oxford Road in 1973/74. Johnny Biddle and Jimmy Wakeling proved to be successful managers. In 1974/75 Cray won the Met London League and League Cup, scoring 170 goals in all matches that season. In 1976/77 and 1977/78 Cray won the London Spartan League championship.

Cray decided to return to the Kent League in 1978/79. Success came quickly because Cray won the championship in 1980/81, having been runners-up the year before. Their powerful new team under manager Harry Richardson reached the FA Vase quarter final and 5th round in those two seasons. After that, the 1980s decade brought only one more piece of silverware, the Kent League Cup in 1983/84. After finishing Kent League runners up in 1990/91, Cray had a lean period during most of the 1990s, with the exception of 1992/93 when they won the Kent Senior Trophy.

A new club chairman Gary Hillman arrived in 1994/95 and Ian Jenkins, a Cray player since 1993, was appointed manager in 1999. By now, Cray were tenants of Bromley FC. As champions of the Kent League in 2002/03 and 2003/04,

also reaching the FA Vase quarter final, they achieved promotion into the Ryman League Division One. Five years later at the end of season 2008/09 came further promotion into the Ryman Premier League, the highest level of football that the club has played at since the war.

After parting company with long-serving manager Ian Jenkins, relegation into the Ryman Division One North came at the end of 2013/14. The 2014/15 season started with much optimism but this was soon dispelled with a run of difficult results and three changes in management. Looking very much like having to suffer back to back relegations at Christmas and with 10 games to go after suffering a home defeat to the eventual League Champions the Wands went on a 10 game winning run, with a team assembled by the then manager Tommy Warrilow to secure survival and became the Ryman North League Team of the Year.

For 2015/16 The Wands were managed by former player Tony Russell. The Wands finished third in the Ryman North Division losing in the play-off semi final. Two years later and now in the Bostik League South they were beaten by Walton Casuals at the same stage after an excellent season saw Cray finish third and as top scorers with 112 goals.

The 2018-19 season saw Cray Wanderers now playing in the newly formed Isthmian South-East and after a 15 game unbeaten start to the season the team were on their way and were crowned the first champions of the division on Saturday 13th April and Cray took their place in the Isthmian Premier after a five year absence. Cray were lying 2nd in the division on 7th March, 2020 but the continuing escalation of Coronavirus led to the season being considered null and void. The 2020-21 season began and the 4th Qualifying Round of the FA Cup was reached for the second time but with the Wands lying 5th in the Isthmian Premier the season was curtailed with the introduction of tier systems and two more national lockdowns.

The 2021-22 season saw the start of a new era for Cray Wanderers as Tony Russell and his coaching team departed the club in March 2021 and in April, former Welling United, AFC Wimbledon and Gillingham forward Danny Kedwell was appointed as new manager. However, Danny departed the club at the end of December and ex-Wands player Grant Basey took over in an interim capacity but ex-Bromley boss Neil Smith was appointed on 22nd March to guide Cray through the remaining league games and managed to stave off relegation and became Cray Wanderers first ever full time manager in May 2022 and the club are looking to prosper on and off the field.

The move to the new ground is taking shape and grass pitches were laid for Cray Wanderers youth sides to play on while the main stadium is being built and the club are finally playing football at what will be their new home and with 30+ youth teams including for the first time, girls football and the launch of a new academy side the future is looking rosy and bright.

Despite the impressive history of our visitors and our own lengthy past, there is no record of the two clubs having met until we moved into the Ryman Isthmian League under the 2004 re-organisation of the non-league pyramid. Between 2004 and 2007 we met twice in each of those three seasons in Division One/One (South) and neatly the Wands won the first two matches, we then won the next two games and in season 2006/07 we drew both fixtures. There was then a two season gap until we renewed acquaintances in the Premier Division in 2009.

KINGSTONIAN'S WOES CONTINUE, WHILST CRAY WANDERERS AND FOLKESTONE INVICTA PLAY OUT A GOALLESS DRAW ...

TITLE League

Cray Wanderers climbed back into the top five on Wednesday night - but only just, as they couldn’t get the better of Folkestone Invicta at Hayes Lane - and indeed the visitors will perhaps count themselves unlucky not to have take the points. Invicta had the lions share of the first half, Ibrahim Olutade coming closest when his shot struck the bar, but after the break Wands had chances of their own, Dan Bassett undoubtedly feeling rather unlucky when Patrick Ohman in the Invicta goal pushed his shot against the post.

Invicta managed two more strikes of the woodwork as they pushed for a winner. A cross-shot from Scott Heard hit one post, a shot from Ira Jackson hit the other post, but in the end neither side could manage a goal. Wands go ahead of Canvey Island on goal difference, although they have played two games more. Invicta are 12th, eight points behind their hosts.

At Imperial Fields Kingstonian’s woes continue, and opponents Hastings United took full advantage to close to within three points of the top five. A Ryan Worrall thunderbolt from distance on twenty five minutes gave the visitors the lead, and it was doubled with twenty two minutes remaining as David Smith rounded Rob Tolfrey to score his first United goal. Deep into added time scorer turned provider, Smith setting up Freddie Legg who made it three-nil.

Kingstonian remain fourth from bottom. They have lost their last five, and indeed have taken only five points from the last forty five available to them. Their last home win came on bonfire night, and goodness they could do with finding some fireworks. They travel to Bognor Regis Town on Saturday.

ANGEL COLLINS NEW AT INVICTA

A week after scoring against Folkestone Invicta, Louis Collins signs for the club.

Folkestone Invicta have announced the capture of striker Louis Collins, and gave him a debut againt Cray Wanderers last Wednesday.

The Tonbridge Angels striker returns to our ranks after previous spells with Sevenoaks Town, Margate and - most recently - Hastings United.

Louis signed for Angels in the summer, after making seven appearances for Gate at the end of last season. Prior to his time at Hartsdown Park he was turning out a step higher for one of Gate's local rivals, Dover Athletic.

He had two spells with Sevenoaks Town, and prior to that was with Scunthorpe United, and al so played youth football with Millwall, Ebbsfleet United and Bromley. He scored 47 goals in 23 games with United's Under 15's, and was also top scorer as an Under 16 with Bromley, winning the Kent Youth League Golden Boot two seasons in succession before heading to Scunthorpe.

He spent a short time on loan at Hastings United earlier this year, making five appearances and, in one of those coincidences that turn up regularly in Isthmian land, scored the Hastings opener against his new club just a week ago. He'd better hope the Build Kent faithful are a forgiving lot!

BROMLEY MIDFIELDER FOR BOWERS

Marcus Sablier was announced as a new arrival at Bowers & Pitsea last week, and the Bromley loanee must have thoroughly enjoyed his first eighty-one minutes against Wingate & Finchley as his side went three-nil up. The closing stages, we suspect, weren't quite so enjoyable!

Marcus played for the U18's at Bromley before graduating to the first team squad, and has had loan spells at Welling United and at Hampton & Richmond Borough in National League South. He joins the club for an initial twenty-eight days.

ON THIS DAY FEBRUARY 18

1931

Dixie Dean's two goals in the 5-2 Second Division victory over Barnsley at Goodison meant that he had scored in 12 consecutive Football League matches. The run had started on December 6th and in those 12 matches Dean had scored 23 times to help Everton to some amazing victories which included a 9-1 home win over Plymouth and a 7-0 victory at Charlton. Dixie Dean scored 39 of Everton's club record 121 League goals that season (plus another 9 in the FA Cup) which saw them finish as champions in their first season in Division 2. Three seasons earlier he had set a goalscoring record that stands to this day when scoring 60 League goals in a season.

1987

England visited Madrid and beat Spain 4-2. Gary Lineker scored all four England goals and manager Bobby Robson - who was celebrating his 54th birthday - gave Tony Adams his international debut.

“The Isthmian League and all Member Clubs in the League are committed to promoting equality by treating people fairly and with respect, by recognising that inequalities may exist, by taking steps to address them and providing access and  opportunities for all members of the community.”

These include our policy on ticket and pricing, abandoned matches and our Hastings Community involvement.

THE CLUB BELIEVES

Customer care starts on the inside, with a good team of staff and work ethic. Most of our staff are volunteers but the Club expect our staff to always do their best.

Our staff should remain courteous even in difficult situations. The Club and its staff know they are offering a service and that they would like every customer to return.

We believe that people come first when offering a service.

We expect our staff to be friendly and helpful and to know their job or be able to call upon someone who is able to respond to the needs of our customers.

We expect our staff to give their full attention to a customer in any situation that arises.

IN ADDITION

We expect our staff and volunteers to care about their job as this will ensure they care about our customers.

We expect our staff and volunteers to treat every customer as they would like to be treated themselves.

We in return expect our customers to treat our volunteers and staff with respect and the Club will not tolerate any physical or verbal abused aimed at them.
