FROM THE BOARDROOM WELCOME BACK Another season has arrived and today we commence our aim of achieving promotion, something we have absolutely strived for over the last few seasons without being able to get over the line. We believe our Club with its history, size and fan base should be operating at a far higher level within the National League System. Unfortunately history and tradition counts for nothing in the battle for promotion, but sufficient results on the pitch do, and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what we will be trying our upmost to accrue this season. You, our supporters, have a vital part to play in our ambition. Our fan base is a lot bigger than most other clubs in the division and we appreciate that support and we know our players also appreciate the support you provide both home and away as you get behind the team. Welcome back to all our volunteers including our shop staff plus our refreshment outlet workers. In addition welcome to our new bar staff. We would also like to thank our programme editor Paul Hoggard and website manager Kirsty Thompson who do such good work for the Club. All of these people are crucial to our operation as are you the supporters who as I said previously are so vital to the Club and the team. We also have on board two new directors in Jo Nesbit and Kevin Martin who have been brought in specifically to concentrate on increasing the Clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s commercial revenue across a range of initiatives. They will be assisted in their task by Hayley Clout, our existing commercial manager, who continues to work hard for the Club in all sorts of areas. In addition thanks to first team manager Chris Agutter, his assistant Andrew Brown, Jamie Hodd and some of the academy players who gave up their time to paint out the changing rooms. Also to groundsman Simon Rudkins who has managed to produce a decent playing surface despite a lack of the wet stuff right through the summer. During the close season the Pilot Field clubhouse has been refurbished and is now renamed as the Pilot Bar. We hope a lot of supporters will take the opportunity to frequent the bar on match days and mix with our players and staff who will come into the bar after matches. The Club intend to introduce Happy Hours on drinks and experiment with live music in the Pilot Bar during the season although not necessarily for every match. Watch social media, Club website and local advertising for news on this. Pilot Bar manager Sam Smith and her staff will be delighted to see you. The Pilot Bar will also be available for event hire. The Bostik League has been restructured during the close season with an additional league at Step 4 (our level) added. We have been placed in Bostik South East a division of 20 clubs compared with the 24 clubs in Bostik South last season. We will be playing a number of new clubs whilst also reacquainting rivalry with a lot of the same clubs we played last season. In overall terms the restructure is somewhat particularly costly to us due to our higher than other clubs home attendance average, as our home fixtures are reduced by 4 which has a

Our last match was at the Pilot Field on Monday night of this week against Bostik Premier Whitehawk which resulted in a 0-2 defeat. Three friendly matches against Bostik Premier clubs has shown us we still have a lot of work to do. Whilst we have had good possession in all friendly matches we have at times made mistakes at both ends of the pitch something Chris I know will be looking for his players to rectify for the season ahead. Friendly matches are just that friendly matches and I never read too much into the results but they are useful in terms of getting players fit, trying different systems and identifying areas for improvement. We go into the season with a positive mind set. We retained our good young manager Chris Agutter and nearly all of last season’s squad who did so well in the second half of last season. To this we have added players in positions where Chris felt we needed to strengthen. We believe we have a young energetic squad that is sprinkled with experienced player support. Chris is looking however to add to his up-front options to cover for the injury to striker Davide Rodari who improved so much after he broke into the first team during last season. Davide unbeknown to him at the time, injured his ACL in the final home match of last season against Sittingbourne. He did not think too much of the slight discomfort he felt until getting back into pre-season training when it became evident he had a problem. A scan then showed he had a tear in his ACL that would require surgery. Davide went to Italy about 10 days ago and is

The Development Squad will again play in the Bostik Development League South with 13 other clubs. A good thing is there are more clubs in the division this season so the team will have more fixtures which alleviates a lack of fixtures concern the Club had last season. Glyn White recently decided to step down from his role as DS manager. We would like to thank Glyn for the hard work he put in. It’s never an easy job managing the second string. The team will now be looked after by first team assistant manager Andrew Brown and club coach Steve Sands a former club player who has recently joined the Club. Chris has also brought into the Club experienced goalkeeping coach John McCrae who will work with the keepers within the first team squad and DS. The U/19 academy team will continue to play in the National Alliance League. Our football academy managed by Skiltek had a terrific season last term with plenty of honours accrued. The teams will have a hard task in replicating the academy’s success of last season but we know every effort will be made by Skiltek to make sure this happens. What is really good is there is so much talent coming through from the Hastings area which is great for the Club. As regards the Club’s relocation this is still very much on the cards. We hope to have some positive news to announce over the coming months. Both the Club and our partners continue to work very hard on making relocation to new purpose built facilities happen. Good afternoon everyone. Firstly on behalf of all the First Team staff and players I’d like to welcome all our wonderful faithful back to the Pilot Field......WE GO AGAIN! I believe it’s been a very productive summer ...... in the off-season we managed to get our business done relatively early in terms of recruitment, the summer works has been another real success thanks to the fantastic efforts of a number of supporters lead brilliantly by our very own Scott White, and the Pilot Bar has been revamped and transformed into a superb space for everyone at HUFC. In terms of pre-season on the field, we have learnt an awful lot and undoubtedly covered a huge amount of really decent ground, everyone has worked particularly hard to be in what I believe is great shape ahead of today’s arrival of Thamesmead Town to the Pilot Field. Off the field over the pre-season period we’ve seen another successful HUFC Community Day where the First Team and Academy staff had the opportunity to have fun and games with some of our youngest HUFC supporters, as well as another superbly organised HUFC Media Day where supporters and Club sponsors had an extra opportunity to spend time with the Club’s First Team and Academy squads. So what’s this seasons ambitions and expectations ......1) As a group be humble and hardworking, never allow the opposition players or staff to outwork any member of the HUFC team. 2) In every single game see Hastings United First Team play my type of footballalways be the protagonists aiming to take the game to the opposition through deliberate control on and off the ball. 3) Win the Bostik South East Division whilst never compromising points 1) and 2). TIME FOR ANOTHER GO Here we go again – will this be the season it all falls into place? That elusive perfect recipe with all the ingredients – consistency, results, luck, stability – you need em all and those of you who were here for the 91-92 and 01-02 title winning seasons will remember these things. Since those days, of course, the gimmick of the play off has become a sadly all too regular feature, the “That'll have to do”, artificial “create interest” option when the one automatic promotion spot goes out of reach. And this season – as predicted in these pages last time round - even the play offs will not be what they were at Step 4 level where we play. More on that further on. Pre season does less than nothing for me. So I shall be relying on the likes of Messrs Donaldson and Glazier for updates on new faces as '18 - '19 gets going. I am very sorry to see Ollie Rowe has gone to Ashford and equally so to hear the news about Davide Rodari's long term injury. Absolutely unreal, Davide had been getting better and better as last season went by and we must have all been highly optimistic about what he would be capable of this season. His ACL injury is a big blow and we all wish you well, fella. So – one automatic promotion spot and a play off place (maybe) to go for. Hythe, Cray and Greenwich Borough have to feature even though Greenwich appeared to be trimming back last season. There is bound to be some unfancied

Am I the only one to spot a resemblance between United star Davide van Damme and actor Jean-Claude Rodari? side creep in to the race, and with Chris Agutter having started this season carrying on where he left off last season (Just how long is it since a season started here with the same boss who finished the previous one??), our lads must be in with a shout. Still a very young squad but a year older, a year stronger, a year's experience at this level – the patient building of the squad will surely see United feature. New faces this season – Haywards Heath, Three Bridges and Whitstable are back and Sevenoaks Town. It will be a 38 game season which hits the club – all clubs – as that means 4 less home games. But then that's 4 less away games' travelling costs and having more Tuesdays free leaves opportunities to catch up easier when weather issues see Saturday games postponed. Swings and roundabouts?

IT'S ONLY “NON LEAGUE”....... You can be sure that's the basic gist of what was to be heard at FA HQ in recent months as the predicted Step 4 shambles at the end of this season became apparent half way through last season with the reorganisation of the semi pro game. It was a two stage shambles – the farcical adjustments and tinkering made to Step 3 last season that saw only three clubs relegated instead of the 12 it should've been, losing play off finalists at Step 4 promoted (Corinthian Casuals) and then the knock on effect of Yorkshire based, Northern Premier, Shaw Lane's collapse reverberating, league by league, all the way down to Dorset where Wimborne who'd lost their Southern League West play off final were promoted weeks into the close season! 7 divisions at Step 4 will feed into 4 divisions at Step 3 this season as part of the FA's reorganisation of the semi-pro game. A fourth league at Step 3 has been needed for years, I used to go on about that in the old Ghost fanzine 20 years ago. This reorg creates that – but what a shambles has resulted because 7 doesn't go into 4. When another Step 4 division is created then 8 will feed into four, 16 up, 16 down. That new division should kick off in 2020-21. At the end of this season – 12 clubs will go up from seven Step 4 divisions, the champions of each division plus 5 play off winners. Where's the maths in that? Apparently the Step 4 points per game formula that was created last season will be used to decide which of the play off sides go up this season. Some clubs will miss out. Tinkering at it's worst. Shambolic. Utterly shambolic. A fairer (and tidier) alternative would have surely be 12 down from Step 3 and 12 up from Step 4 – with Step 4 remaining as was – six divisions – feeding into four. It would mean sideways shuffles but would be a whole lot fairer than what we will see next April. The administration of Step 4 – had it been left at 6 divisions – would have been a challenge but nothing insurmountable. Walton Casuals, Harrow Borough, Hendon and Met Police have ended up in Step 3 Southern South. When Walton won their play-off final in April against Corinthian – unbelievably, police

What a season that turned out to be after this opening day success. 27 years! were called to deal with disorder there – they can hardly have expected to find Merthyr Town and Tiverton on their fixture list for '18-'19! And there's a little irony in Corinthian Casuals, who they beat in that final, ending up promoted anyway – to Bostik Premier where Walton would far rather be!

FINALLY World Cup? Well, 52 years now since our national side won it's only trophy. Nothing new there, eh? All this twaddle about having the best league in the world will start again – doesn't exactly reflect in our national side. Well done Davide Rodari for taking the time to acknowledge the good wish messages on Twitter. I hope Neymar has finally rolled to a halt somewhere – some of the social media comments on his antics were something else. Thamesmead who battered us twice in the final stages here to win 2-1 last season are our opening opponents this afternoon. Good luck to one and all.

THE VISITORS where they were elected to play in Division One North in 2008–09.

Thamesmead F.C. was formed in 1969 as a community team for local youngsters. The club merged with Southlake FC in 1973, and by 1979 were fielding a Saturday team, playing on the local park pitches. In 1980 the club entered the London Spartan League at the Intermediate Division Three level and dominated the divisions in the early 80s, but were couldn’t gain promotion to the Senior Division until they gained senior status. In 1985, the club changed its name to Thamesmead Town FC, and later that year they relocated to Bayliss Avenue, before finally gaining senior status during the summer of 1987 and were accepted into the London Spartan League Premier Division. The club moved to the Kent League in June 1990, where they remained until 2008, generally finishing amongst the top half dozen in the table. In 2002–03, the club missed the runner-up spot on goal difference, despite bizarrely having more points than Cray Wanderers, who won the League! Keith McMahon took the helm in the summer of 2006 and this would be the beginning of a new successful era for Thamesmead. In 2007–08, Thamesmead Town were champions of the Kent League, winning the title on the last day of the season. The title ensured promotion to the Isthmian League, 20

The summer of 2009 saw work begin to give Bayliss Avenue a massive transformation as work began on “Sportsman Club Thamesmead”. The Project aimed to deliver first class facilities for the local community as well as a stadium suitable for Conference South, which was hoped to be completed for the start of the 2010/11 season. However, delays ensued and it was at this time, around September 2012, that former Maidstone United Chairman, Paul Bowden-Brown, became involved in the club as a director, with the main aim of stabilising the finances off the field and then during January 2015 became outright owner of the club as Chairman. When Keith McMahon resigned in early 2015. Before in 2012-13, the Mead finished 3rd in this division and beat Maldon & Tiptree on penalties in the final to gain promotion to the Isthmian Premier Division for the first time in their history. The club’s stay in the Premier Division lasted just one season, and the club endured two turbulent seasons. After Keith McMahon’s resignation the Chairman appointed Terry Spillane as his replacement, unfortunately his reign was terminated by the Chairman early in 2016, although the team was in the play-off positions. In the summer of 2016 the Chairman appointed Tommy Warrilow as the firstteam manager, and with a new man at the helm came fresh hopes for the season. As Warrilow, alongside his number two, former Leatherhead and Dartford skipper Alex O’Brien, looked to take the club back to the Bostik Premier League.

HISTORY

THAMESMEAD TOWN

Pre-season began with a completely newlook squad, yet it proved to be a historic season in the FA Cup, when the club were the first to play a tie in the Channel Islands before reaching the Third Qualifying Round for the first time in the club’s history. In March 2017, the Chairman announced that the Club, due to unacceptable rising costs at Baylis Avenue, had reached agreement with the Directors of Dartford FC to enter into a five-year groundshare agreement that would allow the Club to play their home games at Princes Park Stadium. During the 2017-2018 close season, this groundshare was formally sanctioned by the new Bostik league directors, as well as confirming that, for the first time, the Mead would be competing in the South Division for the upcoming season. In August 2017, the club enjoyed a record 8-0 win in the FA Cup (away to East Preston) which was not only the Clubs biggest ever win in the competition but was also the first time, we have won a competitive game by eight clear goals! By the end of 2017-2018 season, the club had netted over one hundred League goals but missed out on the end of season play-offs. Tommy Warrilow Thamesmead Town FC Manager

Tommy spent seven years as manager of Tonbridge Angels, winning promotion from the Ryman Premier League before the club spent three years in the Conference South. He left at the end of the 2013-2014 season following relegation back to Step 3 and spent time as chief scout at Ebbsfleet United before returning to the dugout as manager of Cray Wanderers. Warrilow masterminded a minor miracle at Cray, taking over in January 2015 and producing a ten game win streak at the end of the season which saw the Wands retain their Ryman North status.

ON THIS DAY A look back at some of the matches played in past seasons on: Saturday, 11th August

2001 There were no Premiership fixtures but eleven matches were played in Division One of the Nationwide Football League where goals abounded Gillingham leading the way as they put five past Preston without reply at the Priestfield. Bradford City beat Barnsley 4-0, the same result achieved by newly promoted Millwall as they entertained Norwich City. Goals from Eyal Berhovic, Stuart Pearce and Shawn Goater saw Manchester City to a 3-0 win over Watford. In Division Two, Colchester United topped the first table with a 6-3 victory at Chesterfield while Brighton started the season by picking up an away point with a goal less draw at Cambridge United. Scoring was also modest in Division Three where the best performances were Swansea City’s 3-1 win at Macclesfield Twn and Luton Town’s 2-0 away victory at Carlisle United. We, then Hastings Town, played out a goalless draw in a pre-season game at Bromley, a match watched by a crowd of just one hundred.

2007 It was the opening day of the season in the Barclays Premiership and the Coca Cola Championship and Football League: In the top flight just two of the seven matches played resulted in home victories for Everton who beat Wigan Athletic 2-1 and Sunderland who defeated Tottenham 1-0. Fellow north-easterners Newcastle United also won 3-1 at Bolton Wanderers albeit Middlesbrough did go down 1-2 to Blackburn Rovers. Liverpool produced another win for Merseyside winning 2-1 at Aston Villa with a last minute goal from Steven Gerrard just five minutes after Gareth Barry had equalised for the home side from the penalty spot following a first half own goal. Rolando Bianchi and Geovanni scored on their debuts as Sven-Goran Eriksson’s new look Manchester City got off to a winning 2-0 start at West Ham United. Away sides also prospered well in the Championship, however, Brighton were not so fortunate as they lost 1-2 at Crewe Alexandra in Division One. Following our promotion to the Premier Division of the Ryman League we entertained Croydon Athletic in a pre-season game here which we lost 0-1 to leave us winless in six matches.

Only two of the other ties were won by more than one goal as Crewe Alexandra beat Hartlepool United 5-0 and Leeds United knocked out Shrewsbury Town 4-0. For the second day running we travelled to Eastbourne and lost in pre-season games, having gone down 1-2 at Town the night before this day we lost 0-2 at Borough.

The Club held its Media Day at the Pilot Field last Saturday at which sponsors and supporters were invited to watch the players train and then meet the staff and players afterwards in the newly refurbished and renamed Pilot Bar where a few drinks and a buffet were the order of the day.

The Club Believes Customer Care starts on the inside, with a good team of staff and work ethic. Most of our staff are volunteers but The Club expect our staff to always do their best.

Please note that the officers and stewards of Hastings United Football Club will enforce Ground Regulations. A copy of these Regulations is posted at the entrance to each turnstile and within the ground on the wall next to the food bar.

Our staff should remain courteous even in difficult situations. The Club and its staff know they are offering a service and that they would like every customer to return.

Please note that the following are offences under the Football (Offences) Act 1991, as amended: the throwing of any object within the ground without lawful authority or excuse, the chanting of anything of an indecent or racist nature: the entry onto the playing area or any adjacent area to which spectators are not generally admitted without lawful authority or excuse.

We believe that people come first when offering a service.

Under the Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol etc.) Act 1985, the following are offences for which a person can be arrested by a police officer: attempting to enter the ground or being inside the ground whilst drunk: being in possession of any intoxicating liquor, or bottle, can or other portable container which could cause damage or personal injury when entering the ground.

We expect our staff to be friendly and helpful and to know their job or be able to call upon someone who is able to respond to the needs of our customers. We expect our staff to give their full attention to a customer in any situation that arises.

In Addition We expect our staff and volunteers to care about their job as this will ensure they care about our customers. We expect our staff and volunteers to treat every customer as they would like to be treated themselves. We in return expect our customers to treat our volunteers and staff with respect and The Club will not tolerate any physical or verbal abused aimed at them.

The event proved a very busy afternoon for players and staff on a packed Hastings seafront as people enjoyed Hastings Pirate Day. The players and staff entertained a large number of kids, each of which was provided with a 40 â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Hastings United FC in the Communityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; T-shirt for taking part.
