I’m sure it won’t have gone unnoticed that U’s striker, Daniel Ajakaiye, is top of the Bostik SE goalscorers table along with Whyteleafe’s EddieLouis Dsane with 6 each. Daniel also adding to his impressive tally with an important goal in our 3-2 win over VCD Athletic. Keep ‘em coming Daniel! Like the U’s, Pheonix Sports have opened their league account with three wins. Beating East Grinstead Town away on day one 3-1, followed by two home wins against Three Bridges 5-2 and on Bank Holiday Monday, Thamesmead Town 1-0. Sandwiched between their league victories was a 3-2 FA Cup away win over Three Bridges. Two Phoenix players currently feature among the early Bostik SE leading goalscorers, Jeff Duah-Kessie with 4 and Kweku Ansah netting 3, Duah-Kessie adding two to his overall first team tally against Three Bridges in the FA Cup. MANAGER’S NOTES Good afternoon everyone. Firstly a big welcome to our HUFC support once again, two great home wins to date, 5-1 vs Thamesmead Town and 3-2 vs VCD Athletic ..... here’s to another positive performance and result today against Phoenix Sports. A second welcome to the Pilot Field goes to everyone from Phoenix Sports, who like ourselves are aiming to make it 5 wins from 5 in today’s Bostik South East League encounter - we hope you have a decent trip down to the south coast - not too decent though.

The opening games have seen plenty of action and entertainment ..... as well as bucket loads of spirit, character and endeavour, to come back to win all 4 games from losing positions really speaks volumes about this group, we now know that when it gets tough we have a group that will react ..... we haven’t been at our best, we haven’t put together the complete performance yet - nowhere near it in fact ..... however we’ve won 4 out of 4 - sign of a good team and all that! When I think back to Molesey away (my first game in charge) compared to now ..... I realise, and am so proud of the progress we have made, we have become a very good side with so so so much room for improvement - exciting times indeed!

Firstly I just want to say a huge thank you to the supporters that have followed us home and away so enthusiastically already this season ...... it’s vital for the team that it can, week in, week out, rely on your backing. GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart A light hearted and serious look at football (not necessarily just football) at all levels, those who play, those who administrate and those of us who follow our various teams in this vast, lop sided pyramid of the game. At all times, views expressed are mine.
BUSY WEEKEND VCD and Sevenoaks, two games, another 10 goals with United keeping the hypertension levels right up there as they came from behind to win both games. The VCD result saw United pocket £2890 FA Cup prize loot and £6000 awaits us if we see off early Bostik Prem strugglers, Kingstonian in the next round. Decent side VCD, who must have been gutted to concede the 89th minute decider. Sevenoaks awaited on the Bank Holiday – if I have my numbers right that's my 123rd away ground. Artificial surface, goals on wheels (!), a new ground with plenty of free view football available from the slopes adjacent to two sides. And four ex-United men in their ranks, Ryan Nicholls in goal (on loan from Dartford apparently), Kenny Pogue and Frankie Sawyer up front and Sam Crabb in defence. Zac Attwood is also there but currently out injured. U's were by far the better side but with several changes from the VCD game, looked vulnerable to quick breaking Sevenoaks with generosity, gifting both the home side goals to Kenny. Hanging on to the lead saw the U's remain in the top 6 who have opened with three wins – a top 6 including this afternoon's opposition, Phoenix Sports. 262 attendance on Monday with a substantial United element viewing proceedings. 428 for the FA Cup tie was very respectable for the early stages of the competition.

Alvechurch 4-3 at home to Bromsgrove Sporting, Southern Combination Arundel lost 1-7 at home to Bostik SE Herne Bay (two of the goals from Danny Leonard who had a short spell with us last season – shame he didn't stay), Hayes & Yeading of Bostik SC won 7-0 at Brimscombe & Thrupp of the Hellenic Premier League, Clitheroe of Northern Premier West went through the motions at home to Sunderland RCA of Northern League Division One – a dull 6-6 draw, Daventry Town of the United Counties Premier saw off Southern Central Yaxley 7-5 while Greenwich Borough – not the force they were last season – of Bostik SE, scored first at home to Step 5 Southern Combination Lancing who ended up hammering Borough 7-3!.
Well done Daniel Ajakaiye, three more goals over the weekend and we will all hope that late ankle knock isn't serious.

Times have moved on since 2002-2003 when we drew 1-1 here with Dover Athletic in a Southern Premier game. Athletic now ply their trade in the National League, three steps higher than the U's.

He's clued up on Hastings United now, I've made sure of that, but some of our opponents – he reckons they're all works teams - leave him scratching his head so I make it simple for him. I sent him a video of Daniel's penalty at home to Thamesmead with the caption, United 5 WH Smith 1! But like I said, he's clued up on United now and always wants to know how they got on. Unfortunately, working near Crawley, it's unlikely he'll see a game here at the Pilot Field but Three Bridges is just round the corner so I will see about the game up there and whether I can lure him along. Those of you who do work locally – be a pain, don't let it go – keep on about your home town team, bore ‘em to death, tell ‘em, everyone through the turnstiles here makes a difference and you will end up enticing one or two up Elphinstone Road! Had a chat at Sevenoaks with our photographist, Scott White who was brandishing his howitzer like camera, and I had to concede that, er, Scott's is bigger than mine.
1-0 WILL BE FINE ...... I suspect Phil Glazier wasn't speaking just for himself on the unofficial forum when he said he'd settle for a 1-0 win this afternoon. Played 4, won 4 looks great, behind in every game makes it even better – but, yes, 1-0 would be fine today.
WHO? Many of us follow a professional side, I follow Chelsea, I used to go to Stamford Bridge in the early 70s, attendances of 57,000 at Stamford Bridge, being able to stand, The Shed, being scared to death leaving a game one evening when the sheer crush of people lifted me off my feet – I went to a couple of games at The Goldstone when Peter Ward was knocking them in for Brighton (One Albion to the other, Brighton signed him from our old Southern Premier opponents, Burton in 75) and I've been to one Brighton game at The Amex. But Hastings United finally lured me up here back in October 1976 and I cannot be the only one – usually at work or down at the boozer – who upon replying “Hastings United” when asked who I follow, as in who I watch, gets the perplexed response - “ Who?”. Sometimes it's micky taking, and sometimes it's genuine ignorance – your mate, my mate – they've never heard of the club we follow, our local semi-pro side - “Who?”....... It's turned into a standing joke with a Newcastle
Vernon and Jack at Sevenoaks - Dad not too happy as while they were lining up for a portion of chips just before half-time, with perfect timing they missed both U's goals. Zero goal Diet chips!

TODAY’S VISITORS Phoenix Sports Club was formed in 1935 as St. Johns Welling, which later changed its name to Lakeside. After the Second World War they reformed and renamed Phoenix as it was seen to be rising from from the ashes of the previous two clubs amid the destruction of the blitz. They played at various locations in the local area including Danson Park, until 1950 when the local council offered them a piece of waste land in Mayplace Road East, Bexleyheath. This has now evolved into the Sports Ground that we now know as The Club. Football and Cricket have been played at Mayplace Road East, and many members past and present have represented the club by playing both sports, but with the growth of junior football, cricket has now moved away. After entering the Sidcup League, Kent Amateur League, and the Dartford League, the club settled in the Kent County Football League Division One West, finishing runners-up twice in the 1950s, and once in the 70s. Due to financial difficulties we were forced to form a Limited Company and are now called Phoenix Sports Club (1982) Limited. The club entered the Spartan League in 198687 and competed there for six seasons. They then returned to the Kent County League Division One West, winning the Challenge Cup in 1993-94. We won the league in 1999-2000, gaining promotion to the Premier Division, however after two relegations we ended up in Division Two West. We won Division Two West in 2004-05 and Division One West in 2007-08, regaining our Kent County League Premier Division status. Various honours have come our way over the years, but unfortunately records are fairly sparse. We have won the Hospitals Charity Cup Division 1 twice in recent seasons.

In recent years we have seen a steady improvement in the standard of football played at Phoenix, especially after the introduction of our Saturday morning soccer academy for juniors and a new management team at our senior level. This resulting in the 1st team winning Div 2 of the Kent County Football League, The West Kent Challenge Shield, The Hospitals Charity Cup and the Kent Junior Cup in season 2004-2005. Maintaining steady progress to win the Div 1 Championship and promotion to the Premier Division and also the West Kent Challenge Shield and the Hospitals Charity Cup again, followed by a win in the KCFA Intermediate Challenge Shield. After 3 seasons in the Premier Division, the first team became founder members of the Kent Invicta League at step 6 of the National League System, (step 10 of the English Football League system) the highest level of football the club has ever played at. We went on to finish runners-up, missing out by only two points to eventual champions Bly Spartans as well as reaching the League Cup Final, again losing out to Bly Spartans. The Reserves also had a good season winning Division 2 of the Kent Hurliman League and Finalists in the Kent Intermediate Cup. This past season our 3rd senior team (The A Team) gained entry into the Kent County League, winning Reserve Division West and reaching the final of the KCFA Junior Cup group A and the Hospitals Charity Cup.

PHOENIX SPORTS FC Unfortunately the 1st team and Reserve team Management both decided to resign for personal reasons at the end of season 20112012. After an exhaustive process the club appointed Steve O’Boyle and Tony Beckingham as Joint 1st Team Managers, and John Hope as Manager for the Reserves assisted by Brian Magenis and John Barry. Whilst off the pitch new floodlights were installed and a 108 seat stand. PHOENIX RISING After a successful campaign and losing only 2 League games the 1st Team managed to win the Kent Invicta League Championship to gain promotion to the Kent League, which has been renamed as Southern Counties East Football League. After finishing in 6th place in the inaugural season, the Club made some more ground improvements and received confirmation of an ‘F’ Grade. Aiming to a higher finish, hoping for maybe 4th spot, for the next season. A very good start was made to the 14-15 season but unfortunately lost in our first ever appearance in the FA Cup. Losing on penalties after a replay. Phoenix then enjoyed an unbelievable run in both the League and FA Vase. The Vase journey was fantastic culminating in reaching the 5th Round Proper, losing to the eventual winners North Shields. In the League, Phoenix only lost one game all season and accumulated 30 clean sheets. Due to these performances they managed to win the League quite comfortably in the end, although there were a few sticky moments. These achievements meant that the Club also had to work miracles off the pitch, but eventually managed to get all the necessary works done in time to gain ‘D’ Grade and promotion to the Ryman League North Division. After a long 1st season in 2015-16, 14th place of 24 teams was achieved. This was regarded as a great result for the club.
After another hard season, 16-17, where Sports were in and around the play-off places for most of it, the 1st team were cursed by manager, Boyley, winning the Manager of the Month award for March, and managed to go the rest of the season without picking up another point, and finishing in 8th place. After a decent start to the 17/18 season and sitting in the play-off spots for a while, we were rocked by the departure of 1st Team Manager Steve O’Boyle. This coincided with a blip in form, but new Manager, Paul Bryon, steadied the ship and we finished in a creditable 11th place. We now look forward to the 2018-19 season in the Bostik South East Division. PHOENIX FAMILY Alongside the 1st Team and the Reserves, we presently have a total of 38 teams playing in Phoenix colours, making us one of the biggest clubs in the area. Phoenix are also a FA Charter Standard Community Club - the highest level of youth recognition from the Football Association. Mini-soccer is played at the Mayplace Ground and Sundays are always busy with parents cheering on the youngest players to wear the green shirt.

Sometimes the destination is a little further in Ireland, Italy or Spain. You can call this hobby "Groundhopping" or "Football Tourism". Joost Voncken, an Accountant, originates from the city of Heerlen in the deep south of the Netherlands. Since his childhood he has supported local professional club "Roda JC". In the UK Joost follows Exeter City and so far has seen about 30 games of the Grecians, both home and away. He is passionate about the history of Dutch football and is working on a website, www.voetbalarchieven.nl which contains loads of interesting results and facts from the early years of Dutch football. Hugo van der Burgh, a Maintenance Consultant, is born and bred in the northern city of Leeuwarden (European Capital of Culture 2018) and since 1988 is loyal fan of local pride "Cambuur" who, similar to Roda JC, currently play in the Dutch second level of professional football. Hugo is webmaster of the website https://sites.google.com/site/cheeseanduniononline which contains reports (in Dutch) and pictures of most of his travels to football matches outside the Netherlands. Hugo does not have a favourite team in the UK. Both Joost and Hugo have the ambition to see a home game of all the league clubs in England and Wales. Both are now on 70 of the '92. Besides the famous League clubs they also enjoy the charm and pleasure of non-league football. Especially clubs like Billingham Synthonia, Merthyr Tydfil, Marlow or Folkestone Invicta who all play at old fashioned grounds with lots of character. Today they hope to enjoy the proud history of the Pilot Field and Hastings United.

ON THIS DAY A look back at some of the matches played in past seasons on: Saturday, 1st September.
1928 Dixie Dean scored his second hat trick in three league outings as Division One leaders Everton beat Portsmouth 4-0 while unbeaten Leeds United retained second spot despite drawing 4-4 at Leicester City. The Manchester derby was also drawn finishing 2-2 after home side City scored through Frank and Tommy Roberts while United’s scorers were Willie Johnston and Jack Wilson. Division Two leaders Chelsea won 1-0 at Blackpool with a goal after four minutes from Andy Wilson. At the Goldstone Brighton lost their third consecutive game 0-1, on that occasion to Coventry City, to leave them bottom of Division 3 (South). We, as Hastings & St. Leonards, drew 2-2 with Tunbridge Wells Rangers in a pre-season match; however, the real talking point of the day was the first batch of Southern Amateur League fixtures which gave us a trip to Wembley Stadium in four weeks time to play the Ealing Association at their prestigious temporary home.
1990 Liverpool maintained their perfect start with a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa in Division One of the Barclays Football League, John Barnes and Peter Beardsley netting for the Reds. Second placed Leeds United were one of four other undefeated sides beating Norwich City 3-0, two others met and played out a goal less draw as Arsenal entertained Tottenham Hotspur. Newly promoted Sunderland recorded the surprise of the day beating F.A. Cup holders Manchester United 2-1. goals were plentiful in Division Two as Sheffield Wednesday beat Hull City 5-1, Millwall saw off Barnsley 4-1 and leaders Oldham Athletic beat Portsmouth 3-1 while Brighton drew 1-1 with Wolves. We, then Hastings Town, visited Tooting & Mitcham United in the first qualifying round of the F.A. Cup where we drew 1-1 thanks to a Paul Giles penalty.
2007 At the end of the afternoon the two Merseyside clubs topped the Barclays Premier League, Liverpool being top on goal difference after beating Derby County 6-0, with Xabi Alonso and Fernando Torres both bagging a brace; Everton winning 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers. Substitute Louis Saha scored a late goal to secure Manchester United a 1-0 win against Sunderland while Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur drew 3-3 at Craven Cottage. In the Coca Cola Championship unbeaten Coventry City stayed top after they beat Preston 2-1 while Watford stayed second after beating Ipswich Town 2-0. At the Withdean Brighton edged out Southend by the odd goal of five to go tenth in League One. We visited Wealdstone in the Premier Division of the Ryman League where we drew 3-3 before a crowd of 245, our goals scored by Lee Carey (2) and Ade Olorunda.
