WELCOME Good afternoon all. Welcome to the Pilot Field for today’s exciting FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round encounter against Kingstonian FC. We extend a warm welcome to the officials, players and supporters of today’s visitors. We hope they enjoy their brief visit to Hastings, albeit it brings them to the end of their FA Cup journey, and wish them a safe trip back up to Kingston upon Thames. A similar welcome is extended to today’s three match officials, Alexander, Christopher and Mark. Following our impressive 3-0 home win, last Saturday, over Phoenix Sports, I’m sure all the boys in the first team squad are eager and confident to continue the winning run in this afternoon’s FA Cup tie! 5 wins from 5 has certainly given us an excellent early platform to build momentum from, with U’s striker, Daniel Ajakaiye, netting 9 goals from 5 starts, an excellent strike rate at any level. He currently sits one goal clear, at the top of the Bostik SE goalscorers table. Kingstonian have opened their Bostik Premier season with just the one win from five league encounters. That being a 1-0 home result on August Bank Holiday Monday against Corinthian-Casuals. Elliott Buchanan scoring the all-important winning goal in the 76th minute. Last Saturday they returned pointless from another Sussex coast trip, this time to the west of the county, following a 3-1 defeat at the hands of high-flying Bognor Regis Town. Elliott once again netting for the K’s. Today though, both teams put their regular league accomplishments to one side, to battle out for a place in the next round of this money-spinning, and as we know, often magical, FA Challenge Cup. Good afternoon everyone. Another big big welcome to our HUFC support once again. Three great home wins to date, 5-1 vs Thamesmead Town, 3-2 vs VCD Athletic and last Saturday’s ‘season-best’ performance to date, which saw us beat Phoenix Sports 3-0. Fingers crossed for another positive performance today against Kingstonian!

Rest assured we are not resting on our laurels ...... on Tuesday night we worked harder than we have all pre-season ......

A second welcome to the Pilot Field goes to Leigh Dynan, Paul Dale and everyone associated with Kingstonian. Paul I know particularly well from the ‘football coaching circuit’ and he’s one of the good guys in non-league football, a top top coach and most importantly a great human being who I wish ever success to (apart from today). 5 wins from 5, 3 average performances, 1 decent and 1 exceptional - happily we are on an upward curve on the performance front. Genuinely I feel the 3-0 win against Phoenix Sports was the best of my tenure to date, the only negative was that the scoreline didn’t do the performance justice! Rest assured we are not resting on our laurels ....... on Tuesday night we worked harder than we have all pre-season, so much so that an onlooker referred to us as ‘animals’ - and the best part of this is the fact that myself and the staff are not having to shout, scream and demand effort from the group - it’s automatic. The hardwork is almost treated as a privilege ..... a great start, somebody said the best start the club has had in years ..... but as I said to the players it’s a start and only a start ...... with still a middle and end to be played out!! PHOENIX SPORTS Well, well done to all concerned. Phoenix Sports came here with an identical record to the U's, p4, w4 and ended up being seen off pretty comprehensively with that man Ajakaiye grabbing another two goals. His second – that turn and finish – something else, eh? Obviously far too early to draw any conclusions, let's see where we are in a couple of months, but there is nothing wrong with a good start. The clean sheet must have pleased the boss as much as anything.

STEVE WATT Hum drum 18 months or so for our ex assistant boss. Leaves here in October 16 for the job at Margate who he is reorganising nicely after relegation from National South – then it's back to his old outfit at Maidstone in the top National league as assistant to Jay Saunders – and last weekend he's in charge for their trek all the way up to Gateshead after Saunders, out of the blue, calls it a day. Must have been a quiet drive home after losing to an 89th minute goal. All that way .......... Good luck to him anyway.

had to cover Southern Prem distance wise 20 odd years ago and at long last, the FA has tackled that by creating a new division at step 3 so that the area that was covered by three divisions is now covered by four. Much more like it. Tinkering. Lots of it. Too much of it. Making things over complicated and creating needless anomalies and treating clubs unfairly. All of these have been thrown into the pot. Start off with step 3. We now have four divisions feeding into step 2 (National South / North). Relegation and promotion should be dead easy – four down from each of the National divisions, two up from each of the step 3 divisions = 8 down, 8 up. Yea right. What does the FA come up with? 3 down from the two National divisions results in 6 clubs to be promoted from four step 3 divisions – a mathematical shambles on a par with the equivalent shambles from step 4 up to step 3 which has been ranted and raved on about in this column already – and will be again. The step 3 sides finishing top go up as champions – the play off winners will, er, play off again to get the additional two promoted clubs. It will be a one leg affair with home advantage to whoever has the best points per game over the season. All totally needless if common sense had applied as per the previous paragraph. 8 down, 8 up. Points per game? PPG the new “football formula”? That crept in last season and was used to decide the final automatic promotion place from step 4 to step 3. And it will be used again at the end of this season for the step 3 second stage play offs (!) and at step 4 level where United are. If what I read in the NLP is correct, five play off winners at step 4 will go up, two will miss out – this being based on the PPG formula.

This will run and run. The FA's shambolic reorganisation of semi-pro football, the implications of which became very apparent last season when the structure of the game was tinkered with as never before. Teams avoiding relegation who shouldn't have done, teams going up who shouldn't have etc etc ........ The overall aim is actually a laudable one – step 3 (that's the level above United's current status) really needed sorting out – and has done for many years. Three divisions at that level, Southern Prem, Northern Prem and Isthmian Prem, covered far too big an area – the travelling for part time clubs and players and supporters was on occasions, beyond belief. Especially for the Southern and Northern Prems. I illustrated in the previous GF what Hastings Town

2004-2005, United at what was then Kingstonian's Kingsmeadow ground that they shared with with AFC Wimbledon who were climbing back up the leagues. Above is Ryan Peters in the U's game away to Wimbledon. Decent performance but we lost 3-1 to the Ryman South champions to be. Kingstonian now share with Corinthian Casuals, AFC Wimbledon still play at Kingsmeadow which they have sold to Chelsea while plans are underway for AFC to return to Plough Lane.

Chart of the 2018-2019 semi-pro structure from step 1 to step 4 - handy to refer to while enduring my rant and rave on the big re-org! And we will know as the season comes to an end, who has the best PPG. Last season's GF presented the PPG scenario as it unfolded in the last weeks. Play offs feature sides finishing 2nd to 5th. Now you create a PPG “mini league” of seven clubs who have finished 5th in their respective divisions – the clubs finishing in the bottom two places of that mini league will know that even if they win their play-offs, they can't go up because of their inferior PPG tally! Only 5 clubs can go up via the play offs – as per yet another mini league of the 7 play off winners, the winners with the two worst PPG tally will, um, win nothing. They won't go up. Now, I am 100% anti play off anyway – but tell me how that can be right? Never mind, (as that final box is ticked at FA HQ) “It's only Non-League”.......

NON-LEAGUE PAPER It's a good paper, I get it every weekend. And it should be ranting and raving continually about the FA's convoluted reorganisation of the game it reports on.

PPG PPG – points per game – daft really. We already have that - as in whoever finishes the season with the best PPG finishes top of their league and wins it, goes up etc etc with the odd allowance made here and there for goal difference when necessary. We could use that same formula for runners up and scrap the play offs altogether! That way – revolutionary thinking here – the two best sides over 38-40-42 games get promoted! Just an idea .........

EFL 2 – AS YOU WERE And while the semi pro game (I use “Non-league” occasionally for illustrative purposes – I detest the expression as much as ever) goes through unbelievably complex upheaval, as you were in the EFL 2 comfort zone. The National League is a decent competition yet we still have this daft arrangement of 2 up, 2 down between the two leagues. The FA continues to do nothing.

Toby Ajala

Defender Age: 26 Toby joined Kingstonian in February 2018 from Harlow Town. He started his career with Ilford and joined Bristol City in the 2012-13 season. He made two appearances for the Robins and subsequently had loan spells with AFC Wimbledon and Cheltenham Town before joining Welling United in January ‘14. Since then, he has had spells with Torquay United, Dover Athletic, Gateshead, Dartford and Thamesmead Town before his move to Harlow in November 2017.

Tommy Brewer Midfield/Defender Age: 25 A tall commanding player equally effective either in defence or midfield who shows great composure for his age. Good in the air, comfortable on the ball with a good passing range, and should prove an integral part of our side this season. Was spotted last season at Herne Bay from where he joined us and looks to be an excellent acquisition. Elliott Buchanan

Forward Age: 28 Elliott is another who has joined the K’s in the summer of 2018 from Staines Town. In the 17-18 season, he was the Golden Boot winner, having scored 39 league goals for the Swans. He has extensive experience in higher divisions, having played for the likes of Hayes & Yeading Utd, Newport County, St Albans City, Bishop’s Stortford and Chelmsford City before his move for his second spell at Wheatsheaf Park.

Leo Chambers Defender Age: 23 Leo first joined the club on loan during the 2016-17 season from Billericay Town, and then went on to make the move permanent during the summer. Leo began his career in the youth ranks of West Ham United, signing a professional contract in August 2012. He made three appearances for the Hammers and then six whilst on loan with Colchester United in February 2016. At the beginning of the 2016-17 season, Leo moved to the New Lodge before joining the K’s for his loan spell in January 2018. Greg Cundle Forward Age: 21 Greg originally signed for Kingstonian in the 2017-18 season on loan from Gillingham but made the move a permanent one in the summer. Greg is a product of the Gills’ youth-set up and signed pro forms with the club in 2015. He made six appearances for Gillingham, scoring once, and has had loan experience with East Grinstead Town, Tilbury, Margate, Billericay Town and Bishop’s Stortford.

Midfielder Age: 30 Scott is a player who can play almost anywhere on the park, and has worked before with K’s manager Leigh Dynan at both Farnborough and Whyteleafe. A former Walton Casuals man as well, Scott was both Managers’ and Supporters’ Player of the Year in 201718 for the ‘Leafe and joined Kingstonian in the summer of 2018.

Muhammadu Faal

Forward Age: 21 Mo originally joined the K’s in April 2018 from Dulwich Hamlet, and made an immediate positive impact, scoring seven goals. The K’s then signed him on a permanent basis during the summer. Mo is an exciting, quick and tall forward who originally started his career with Italian club L’Aquila. He made seven appearances in Serie D for the Rossoblu in 2016-17, leaving for Dulwich Hamlet at the beginning of the 17-18 season.

Defender Age: 33 A very experienced centre back, Jay joined the K’s in the summer of 2018 from Metropolitan Police. Jay has played most of his career in the National League South and above with the likes of Farnborough Town, Woking, Havant & Waterlooville, Basingstoke Town and Hampton & Richmond Boro and last season was the Supporters’ Player of the Year for Met Police.

Manolis Gogonas Defender/Midfielder Age: 22 Mano joined the club in the summer of 2017 from Windsor, and went on to become the only outfield player to stay at Kingstonian for the whole of the season, finishing second in the voting for Supporters’ Club Player of the Year. He began his career in Greece with Asteras Tripolis and then Panakadikos before moving to England. Hassan Ibrahiym Midfielder Age: 24 A hard-working central midfielder, Hassan played for Whyteleafe in the 2017-18 season, and impressed K’s manager Leigh Dynan enough in the summer of 2018 for him to sign on Bostik League forms for the 201819 season. Aaron Lamont

Midfielder Age: 22 A former Queen’s Park Rangers junior, Aaron is a very popular central midfield player, and he returned to the K’s in the summer of 2018 after a season in the National League South with Truro City. Aaron originally joined the K’s in 2016-17 from Hampton and Richmond Borough and made a positive impact on the squad before his move down to Cornwall.

Shaun Lucien

Midfielder Age: 26 Shaun is a speedy and exciting midfielder who joined the K’s in the summer of 2018 from St Albans City, though he did begin pre-season with Hampton and Richmond Borough. He played for the Saints for three years, and before that he was at Brentford, Hampton, Uxbridge, Harrow Borough and Wealdstone. In the summer of 2018, he played for the hosts Barawa in the recent ConIFA World Cup that was held in London, scoring twice in their opening game.

Shaun McAuley Midfielder Age: 31 Back for his second spell with Kingstonian, Shaun originally joined the K’s in February 2017 on loan from Oxford City, going on to make 13 appearances. In the summer of 2017 he moved up to the National League South and played a big part in Hampton and Richmond Borough’s run to the play-off final. Before his time with Oxford City, Shaun has also played for Eastleigh, Hayes & Yeading United and Basingstoke Town. Freddy Moncur

Midfielder Age: 22 Son of former Tottenham, Swindon and West Ham player John, Freddy signed for Kingstonian in the summer of 2018 from Wingate & Finchley. A product of the West Ham United youth system, he joined Leyton Orient in 2015, making nine appearances for them. He then had loan spells with Wingate and Finchley (scoring on debut against Kingstonian!) and Bishop’s Stortford, before leaving Leyton Orient in February 2018 and joining Wingate & Finchley on a permanent basis.

Andrew Musungu Defender Age: 24 Andrew was one of Leigh Dynan’s first signings for Kingstonian as both made the move from Whyteleafe. A full back who likes to go forward and help the attack, Andrew started out as a Chelsea junior before playing for Stoke City’s under 21s. A subsequent move to Hayes and Yeading United and a short spell with FC Oborishte Panagyurishte in Bulgaria led to Andrew joining Whyteleafe in 2016, moving to Kingstonian in October 2017. Midfielder Age: 28 Matt signed for Kingstonian in the summer of 2018 from Hemel Hempstead Town. He started his career with Fulham, but went on to play 41 times in the Football League for Dagenham and Redbridge. Since then, he has had spells with Dover Athletic and Aldershot Town in the National League before his move to Hemel Hempstead

Louie Theophanous Forward Age: 26 Another K’s man back for his second spell with the club, Louie originally joined on loan from Billericay Town in January 2018 before moving to Woking when the New Lodge club released him. When the season ended, the K’s managed to snap him up on a permanent basis. Louie has extensive experience at National League South level with the likes of Chelmsford City, Farnborough, Staines Town (where he won the Conference South Golden Boot in 2013-14) and Bromley. Rob Tolfrey Goalkeeper Age: 31 Undeniably a Kingstonian legend, Rob holds the record for the most appearances made in goal for the K’s. Rob started his career with Crawley Town before spending one season with Whyteleafe and then securing a move to Horsham. In 2009, Rob moved to Kingstonian and has been the K’s number one ever since. Supporters’ Player of the Year on a number of occasions, including last season, Rob was recipient of a testimonial match against AFC Wimbledon in 2015. Ugo Udoji Defender Age: 29 Joined the K’s in the summer of 2018 from Eastbourne Borough, though he spent the second half of last season on loan with Staines Town. Ugo began the 2017-18 season with Maldon and Tiptree, but he has two National League South championship winners’ medals with both Bromley and Salisbury City. Ugo has also played for the likes of Tonbridge Angels, Ebbsfleet United and Havant & Waterlooville. Josh Webb Defender Age: 28 Josh, the son of former Nottingham Forest and England midfielder Neil Webb, joined the K’s in the summer of 2018 from Staines Town. He started his career with Reading and has also played for Weymouth, Farnborough, Eastleigh, Basingstoke Town, Walton and Hersham, Hungerford Town and Harrow Borough, from where he joined Staines Town in July 2017. Reece Williams-Bowers Forward Age: 19 Reece joined from Leatherhead in the summer of 2018. A former AFC Wimbledon junior, Reece joined Lewes in 2017 and then quickly returned to Surrey to play for Molesey. At the beginning of the 2017-18 season, Reece moved to Fetcham Grove and scored twice for the Tanners in their 2-0 win in the Surrey Senior Cup against the K’s in February 2018. Freddy Yao Midfielder Age: 20 Cote d’Ivoire-born Freddy joined Kingstonian in the 2017-18 from Burnley’s Under-23 squad. He began his career with Millwall, then had a spell with Fulham before completing a scholarship with Stoke City. From there, he moved to Burnley in March 2016, leaving the Turf Moor club for Kingstonian in January 2018.

Paul Dale

Leigh began his footballing career with West Ham United, however injury forced his retirement in the pro ranks, and he began a lengthy non-league career with Fisher Athletic before playing for Carshalton Athletic, Cobham, Walton Casuals for two spells and Leyton before becoming Cobham manager in 2010. He then became Farnborough reserve team manager in 2011 and was promoted to assistant manager in 2012. In 2016 after his successful time at Cherrywood Road, he moved to Whyteleafe before joining the K’s in October 2017.

Paul, a qualified UEFA A-Licence coach, joined the K’s in the summer of 2018, having most recently been the joint manager of Whyteleafe. A former Army captain, Paul has been an integral part of the Army’s football success in recent seasons, and also was an influential factor as assistant manager of Tooting and Mitcham United when they won the London Senior Cup and Isthmian League South titles in 2016-17. Last season, he led Aldershot Town U19s to league success and the Army’s U23s to their third Inter Services Championship.

KINGSTONIAN FC PREVIOUS MEETINGS WITH THE U’s Our first meeting with Kingstonian took place whilst we were still Hastings and St. Leonards when we travelled to them on Saturday, 25th February, 1939 in the third round of the F.A. Amateur Cup where we lost 0-4. There was then an interval of over sixty-three years until we met again when we, by then Hastings Town, entertained the K’s here for a pre-season match on Saturday, 3rd August, 2002 which they won 2-1 with goals from Donaldson and Mark Jones before a crowd of 203 who saw our lone reply netted by Ellis Remy.

SATURDAY 8TH SEPTEMBER 1888 Ironically, this being an F.A. Cup tie, we kick-off today by wishing a Happy Birthday to our friends the Football League who are celebrating 130 years of operation which is the oldest such competition in the world and whose first version ran from the autumn of 1888 until the spring of 1889. Indeed that season began on Saturday, 8th September, 1888 with twelve member clubs all from the Midlands and North namely Accrington, Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Burnley, Derby County, Everton, Notts County, Preston North End, Stoke, West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers albeit only ten of the twelve took part in the first round of fixtures the Blackburn and Notts County game being played at a later date. When the league began there was no agreed method to determine the Champions with the thinking that it would be only one point for a win. However, a number of draws caused a re-think and the one and two point system was introduced but not until the ninth week of the season, the first recognisable table being drawn up after the round of matches on 3rd November. Using modern standards Derby would have been top after a 6-3 victory at Bolton just ahead of Preston who defeated Burnley 5-2 while W.B.A. were 2-0 victors at Stoke just bettering Everton’s 2-1 defeat of Accrington. Aston Villa defender Gershom Cox was thought to have scored the first ever goal with an unfortunate own goal in a 1-1 draw with Wolves; Preston’s Fred Dewhurst scoring the first positive. However, post match comparisons of actual kick-off times show most games were delayed to allow the crowds entry; thus a goal two minutes into their game with Derby, at 3.47 p.m., by England and Bolton winger Kenny Davenport was scored comfortably before any other and is now regarded as the first ever football league goal. In context the F.A. Cup competition entries that season had reached a then record 149 – less than a quarter of today’s number – and the first qualifying round ties would not take place until Saturday, 6th October: The only Sussex entrants were Lancing (School) Old Boys and the Old Brightonians. The first Hastings & St. Leonards club (not a predecessor of us) was the first local entrant in the competition but not until season 1901/02 while a Kingston-on-Thames club entered in 1906.
