WELCOME Daniel Ajakaiye celebrates one of his 15 goals in just 9 starts ... Tremendous strike rate!

Good evening all. Welcome to the Pilot Field for tonight’s Bostik League Division One South East match against Horsham FC. We extend a warm welcome to the officials, players and supporters of our West Sussex visitors. We hope they have an enjoyable, albeit unfruitful evening with us, and wish them a safe trip home. A similar warm welcome is extended to the three match officials, Daniel, Simon and Jack. Well, what a phenomenal FA Cup win on Saturday. It had everything a competitive cup-tie could possibly throw at it. Mostly thrown at the U’s - three red cards, including a straight red to Charlie Horlock for handball outside the area (video playback shows otherwise). United finishing 4-3 winners after coming back from a 2-1 deficit, with just 8 players on the field at the final whistle. Quite simply astonishing! Congratulations boys! Following our tremendous win at Leiston, a special mention for Club captain, Sam ‘Superman’ Adams, who not only took the green jersey and matching gloves from Charlie after he was red-carded, but struck two vital FA Cup goals to take his U’s career tally to 125 goals scored in 489 first team appearances. Soon be 500 Sam!

Leiston FC 3-4 HUFC FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round Congratulations to Chris Agutter, the coaching staff and backroom team, but above all, the players, on a phenomenal result.

Today’s visitors, Horsham FC, currently sit in 14th position in the league table with 6 points from 5 matches. The 6 points coming from one home and one away win. Former South Park prolific goalscorer, Chris Smith, is now with the Hornets and will certainly be one for our defenders to keep at bay! Horsham also won a seven-goal FA Cup match on Saturday, beating Heybridge Swifts 4-3. Tonight though, both teams put their winning FA Cup accomplishments to one side, to battle out for three important ‘bread and butter’ Bostik League points. Once again, thank you all for your support this evening. I hope you enjoy the match.

Chris Agutter’s relief and joy following the U’s astonishing FA Cup victory away at higherlevel Leiston ...

Win it boys! Let’s close the gap on league leaders Cray Wanderers ... COYU’s ...

MANAGER’S NOTES

Chris Agutter

Good evening everyone. It’s been the craziest week I’ve ever had in football....losing away to Hythe through individual mistakes despite COMPLETELY dominating (which provoked a reaction from our rather unfortunate ‘negative’ brigade on social media who up until then had been quiet when we won our first 6 games ........ supporters????). Beating East Grinstead 9-2 after being 2 goals down, another 4 goals from Daniel Ajakaiye, and then finally that mad, mad, mad away day against Leiston where we outclassed a higher level opponent for an hour when 11v11, then outfought them for 38 minutes with 10, 9 and then 8 players.....the referee WON’T be getting a Christmas card from HUFC!!

It’s been the craziest week I’ve ever had in football ......

Against Horsham we aim to make it 9/10 wins for the season.....and most importantly that’s a positive start born out of playing OUR way......after every single game I get quizzed on how we play, ‘why do we play out from the back’, ‘why do we play backwards and sideways’, ‘needs to go forwards faster’, ‘need a plan b’, etc etc etc.......in short we won’t change, we won’t aimlessly smash the ball down the throats of 6’3’’ CB’s up to our 5’6’’ CF, we won’t force the ball forwards because every other team has done it, so that’s how it must always be done, we won’t change approach because plan A’s not worked ...... we will instead just practice being better at plan A. Feel free to criticise and disagree but please don’t bother asking me on the subject as I won’t be listening. I believe in what I believe in and I won’t change .... this brand of football is here to stay until I’m told that I’m no longer required as HUFC’s First Team Manager. I’ll finish with a stat ..... since Thamesmead Town at home last season, which was the ‘change in direction’, we have averaged OVER 2 points per game ...... 2 points per game is promotion form we’ll continue to let OUR results do the talking, results produced by playing OUR way!

COYU’s ...... WinnersDoMore ...... WeWorkOurWay

HAYLEY CLOUT COMMERCIAL MANAGER Good evening everyone. Welcome back to the Pilot Field and wow where to start! After watching one of the best games of football I have ever seen I would like to start by saying congratulations to Aggy, his staff and all the players for a fantastic win away to Leiston on Saturday in the FA Cup. After winning 2-1 at home to Kingstonian, losing 3-1 away to Hythe Town and then bouncing back to win 9-2 away to East Grinstead Town, the atmosphere, both on and off the pitch, is something very special at the moment and long may that continue. GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart A light hearted and serious look at football (not necessarily just football) at all levels, those who play, those who administrate and those of us who follow our various teams in this vast, lop sided pyramid of the game. At all times, views expressed are mine.

Sadly missed the last train to Leiston - when I was 12. So in the car and sample the delights of the A21 and the A12 with the M25 in the middle.

AND THEN THERE WERE EIGHT..... Saturday - Leiston – where do you start? At the end, I suppose. The reaction of players and coaching staff at the final whistle was truly something to behold as 8 man United battled their way through an unbelievable half-hour to hold out for what is quite possibly already the result of the season. Football has become card obsessed this last 10 years or so. Seeing Charlie go brought back memories of even longer ago when James Creed was red carded at Forest Green Rovers and the double whammy of going down to 10 men with an outfield player in goal. For Sam Adams, read Stuart Playford all those years back in the 1995-1996 season. Saturday was so exceptional you wanted to give them all a joint Man of the Match award but nobody will object if Sam collects it for his Jack of all trades display. Within 5 minutes or so of putting United 4-2 up he was pulling on Charlie's jersey as that unreal half-hour unfolded. That obsession with red and yellow cards. Crutts goes for a second yellow, Jamie Fielding for whatever it was at the end as 9 man United held on – it was a film version of the Kubrick classic - “A Clockwork Red”. Absolutely not the kind of game you might think 3 red cards suggested – and in the post match interview, the Leiston boss who must have been reeling from what just happened – found time to say as much. And how Chris managed to remain so levelheaded in his post-match interview was something else.

That man Adams again - nearly 16 5 years ago at home to Horsham

MEMORIES My rail travel perks for getting to Leiston were of little use given that I'd missed the last train on the Saxmundham to Aldeburgh branch which left in September 1966 so I drove up and the 140 odd mile trip went ok with the inevitable delay at Dartford, though you have to wonder what that would be like if the QE Bridge hadn't been built. The trek brought back memories of Southern League encounters with Chelmsford, Sudbury Town, Braintree, Bury Town – the days when 250-300 mile round trips were the norm rather than the exception. Had a chat at half time on Saturday with some Leiston supporters (They thought Daniel Ajakaiye was rather special) about how they were finding the Southern League and some of the names of teams they play now brought back more memories. They seemed to think the move from Bostik to Evostik (!) hadn't made a great deal of difference but that they didn't miss the M25.

THRILLER Hmmm. Ours was not the only seven goal “thriller” (Why is a high-scoring game always a “thriller”? You can have goalless “thrillers”, you can have 1-0 “thrillers”) on Saturday. Horsham won by the same score in their FA Cup tie at Culver Road (temporary home) to Bostik North, Heybridge Swifts, and there was another 4-3 at Hayes Lane where Cray Wanderers went 6 points clear at the top with their 4-3 win over Hythe Town who had rocked our boat the previous weekend. That's what I was going on about in an earlier GF, the distractions of the FA Cup. Cray no longer have them and are 6 points clear. Early, early days still – we all know that – but tonight is important. Saturday was exceptional on many counts, we will all have been waiting for yesterday's draw for the 3rd qualifying round, £18k in the bank etc, etc – but it's bread and butter football tonight!

Scott White's out of a job - United going 1-0 up at Leiston, Daniel again or an own goal? Who cared! 1-0! ... 9? NINE? League Cup – hmmmmm – it doesn't stir my tea but a respectable 96 turned up at East Grinstead a week ago, a few days after the reversal at Hythe. I confess I wasn't one of the 96 but I was nevertheless amazed at what I saw later that night on Twitter and Facebook as the details came through of yet another fightback as 0-2 ended up 9-2 to United with what would have been a tenth, ruled out at the end. Nine games so far this season and United have been behind in seven of them – of which they've won six.

FINALLY The stuff that pops up on social media, these lads popped up in my inbox. One of them follows Histon, our old Southern League sparring partners.

If any group of players deserved to enjoy the moment, this lot did on Saturday ...

Sorry to see Ansu Janneh has moved on. On his day, as good as any you will see and our loss is Uckfield's gain. They seem to be going along nicely and appear to have given Dartford (managed by Adam Flanagan) a decent game in the FA Cup on Saturday. Ansu will do well there. Hats off to Marcus Garnham the Leiston keeper who, feeling Charlie's red card pain on Saturday went over as Charlie trudged off to offer commiserations. Top fella.

THE VISITORS

The earliest records of Horsham Football Club dates back to 1871 but it wasn’t until 1881 that the club was firmly established. A founder member of the Sussex County FA, the club also helped found the West Sussex Senior League in 1896, winning three successive titles between 1900 and 1902 as well claiming the Royal Irish Rifles Cup in 1900. The club initially played at both Hurst Park and Springfield Park before securing Queen Street as its permanent home in 1904. Horsham were overlooked when the Sussex County League was created in 1920 and it wasn't until their fourth West Sussex Senior League triumph in 1925/26 that they were invited to make the step up. The 1930s was a golden era for the club and the County League was won six times during the decade, Horsham regularly scoring over one hundred goals a season. Cup competitions provided more silverware with the Sussex RUR Cup (seven times) and the Sussex Senior Cup (twice) both finding their way back to Queen Street before the outbreak of war, the success continuing in peace time with the first post-war title in 1947, the RUR Cup in 1946, 1949 and 1951, and the Sussex Senior Cup in 1950. In 1947/48 the club reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the first time, taking a first minute lead against Notts County before losing 9-1. Having had successive applications to join the Athenian League rejected, the club successfully applied to become members of the Metropolitan League that included the ’A’ sides of top Football League clubs, the reserve sides of ‘professional’ non-league clubs and a few amateur teams and Horsham confounded common opinion by winning the championship at the first attempt.

20

HORSHAM FC However, as the league became stronger so the amateur clubs struggled to make any impact at all and, after finishing the 1956/57 season at the foot of the table, Horsham quit the league in favour of the Corinthian League where they began a period of steady progress, resulting in their best ever season in 1961/62 when coming third. Following a mass exodus of players, Horsham were forced to rebuild with a young, local team that would peak at fourth place in 1964/65 only to become the first Horsham side ever to be relegated the following season. Under coach Pat Tobin, the team was rebuilt once more and this reaped dividends in 1966/67 when the club once again reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup, with the visit of Swindon Town drawing a record 7,134 crowd to Queen Street. Despite this achievement this was a frustrating period of near misses for the club who finished third, third and fifth and suffered three consecutive defeats in the final of the Sussex Senior Cup. By now nicknamed the Hornets, following a supporters’ competition, the club appointed Roy Osborne as their new manager and the change brought immediate success with the championship of Division Two achieved in 1969/70, the Division One title in 1972/73, and the Sussex Senior Cup in 1972. Instead of taking their place in the Athenian League Premier Division, Horsham became members of the Isthmian League when that competition expanded to two divisions in 1973/74, finishing eighth in its first season and rounding the season off in style by winning the Sussex Senior Cup. Now under the guidance of Tony Elkins-Green, 1976-77 saw the Hornets finish in a best ever sixth place but financial problems threatened the club's very survival and only the dedicated work of chairman Frank King saw the club saved from bankruptcy and dissolution although it couldn't prevent a young amateur team from finishing bottom of Division One in 1979/80 and the club was relegated to the new Division Two.

HISTORY Horsham endured some dark times under numerous managers in the 1980s, finishing bottom of the league in 1983/84 and 1989/90, when only a successful relegation play-off against Letchworth Garden City maintained the club's Isthmian status. Progress was made under the management of Peter Evans from 1990, during which time the club reached the final qualifying round of the FA Cup, though under his replacement, John Yems, Horsham once again propped up the entire league in 1993/4 leading to the appointment of former captain Mark Dunk as manager. He led his side to the Division Three championship in 1995/96, narrowly missing out on a second successive promotion before departing in 1997. Three years of lower mid-table obscurity followed before former Crawley Town boss John Maggs took over as manager in January 2000, taking a struggling side out of the relegation zone to Division Two runners-up in three seasons and a promotion play-off final appearance in 2004/05. Promotion to the Premier Division was achieved the following season with another runners-up finish and the club went on to establish itself as a consistent performer, even challenging for a place in Conference South in 2007/8 before ending up eleventh. The Hornets made history in 2007/08 by reaching the second round proper of the FA Cup and taking eventual League One champions Swansea City to a replay, with both matches shown live on Sky TV. Having sold their ground for redevelopment at the end of the season, Horsham played at Worthing during 2008/09 and again reached the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup where they took Conference side Stevenage Borough to a replay before ending an injury-ravaged year in thirteenth place. Season 2009/10 saw a return to Horsham, entering into a groundshare agreement with their old neighbours Horsham YMCA as their

A familiar face at the Pilot Field. The former U’s manager has now been in charge of team affairs at Horsham FC since April 2015.

Dom Di Paola Horsham FC Manager quest for a new ground continued, but fortunes were on the wane and an acute overhaul of the club's finances in 2011 resulted in the departure of Maggs after eleven years. A turbulent 2011/12 found the club under three different managers, with Simon Colbran unable to prevent the side from returning to Division One South. A season of stability followed, with the Hornets ending the campaign in fifteenth and claiming the Brighton Charity Cup for a second successive season. The club entered a new chapter in November 2013 when long-serving player Gary Charman was appointed as first team manager. Charman steered the club to sixteenth place but a poor run of results the following season led to Charman's departure and he was replaced by former players Anthony Storey and Cliff Cant, who assumed a joint-managerial role until they, too, were released with relegation a virtual certainty. Former East Preston boss Dom Di Paola was appointed in April 2015, in their place, and he led the Hornets to win the Southern Combination Football League championship in his first season, enabling the club to regain their place in the Ryman League where they finished in sixteenth place. In March 2017 the club was granted approval to move ahead with plans to build a new ground at the Hop Oast area of Horsham, entering into an agreement to play at the Lancing headquarters of the Sussex FA in the interim. Construction work is underway and the club hopes to move back to the town in 2019.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS WITH HORSHAM FC Our first ever meeting took place ninety-six years ago when we, then Hastings & St. Leonards, visited Queens Street, Horsham on Saturday, 17th September, 1921 in the Preliminary Round of the F.A. Amateur Cup where we drew 2-2, after extra time, before progressing the following Saturday when we won 5-0 on the upper pitch here. There was then a three year interval before we met again, on 15th November, 1924 on the upper ground in the third round of the F.A. Amateur Cup when we won 9-2. Our first league meeting took place on 18th September, 1926 on the upper ground in the Sussex County League, a match we lost 0-2 but did win the return 7-5 on New Years’ Day. Those were to be the only league meetings between the two clubs in the inter-war years; however, we continued to meet in cup competitions: In fact, we played a total of nineteen games in the period from 1921 until 1939. After WWII we met here in the second qualifying round of the F.A. Cup on Saturday, 6th October, 1945 when we won 6-1; our next meeting was two years later on Saturday, 20th September, 1947 in the preliminary round of the F.A. Cup when Horsham won 2-1. There was then a twentysix year gap before we next met due to our divergent league membership and avoiding each other in cup competitions until Saturday, 19th January, 1974 when we met on the top pitch in the second round of the Sussex Senior Cup, a tie the Hornets won 3-0. Over seven years elapsed until we next met on Saturday, 17th October, 1981 at Queens Street in the first round of the F.A. Vase when we, by then Hastings Town, drew 3-3 after extra time only to lose by the odd goal of five in the replay on the top pitch three days later. We next met here on Saturday, 13th September, 1986 in the first qualifying round of the F.A. Cup when we won 3-2 in the first of eleven encounters, including four pre-season friendly matches, which would take place until we started to compete in the same league in season 2004/05 after a gap of 77 years.

HASTINGS UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB POLICIES

Customer Charter Full details of our Customer Charter are available at our website: www.hastingsunited.com. These include our policy on ticket and pricing, abandoned matches and our involvement in the Hastings Community.

Health & Safety Hastings United Football Club takes seriously your health and safety during your visit to the Pilot Field.

The Club Believes Customer Care starts on the inside, with a good team of staff and work ethic. Most of our staff are volunteers but The Club expect our staff to always do their best.

Please note that the officers and stewards of Hastings United Football Club will enforce Ground Regulations. A copy of these Regulations is posted at the entrance to each turnstile and within the ground on the wall next to the food bar.

Our staff should remain courteous even in difficult situations. The Club and its staff know they are offering a service and that they would like every customer to return.

Please note that the following are offences under the Football (Offences) Act 1991, as amended: the throwing of any object within the ground without lawful authority or excuse, the chanting of anything of an indecent or racist nature: the entry onto the playing area or any adjacent area to which spectators are not generally admitted without lawful authority or excuse.

We believe that people come first when offering a service.

Under the Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol etc.) Act 1985, the following are offences for which a person can be arrested by a police officer: attempting to enter the ground or being inside the ground whilst drunk: being in possession of any intoxicating liquor, or bottle, can or other portable container which could cause damage or personal injury when entering the ground.

We expect our staff to be friendly and helpful and to know their job or be able to call upon someone who is able to respond to the needs of our customers. We expect our staff to give their full attention to a customer in any situation that arises.

In Addition We expect our staff and volunteers to care about their job as this will ensure they care about our customers. We expect our staff and volunteers to treat every customer as they would like to be treated themselves. We in return expect our customers to treat our volunteers and staff with respect and The Club will not tolerate any physical or verbal abused aimed at them.
