PHIL’S AMAZING STATS Long-standing supporter Phil Donaldson shared some of his personal stats with Commercial Manager, Hayley ... “The game at Leiston was the 2,372nd Hastings 1st Team game I have seen. 1,369 at home and 1,003 away. The game at Sevenoaks on Aug 27 was my 1,000th away. The first Hastings game I ever saw at the Pilot Field was in April 1971 against Ramsgate in the Kent Floodlight League which United won 8-2 and the first away game was at Maidstone United in the Southern League Cup in August 1971, which we lost 1-4. I've now seen Hastings play on 237 different grounds. I saw a few games each season until 1976/77 when I became a regular at home games and then became a regular at away games from 1985/86 onwards. I've been a season ticket holder since 1980-81. I also regularly watch both the Development Squad (U23s) and Academy and over the years have been to over 500 of their games.”

I’m sure everyone reading these stats will agree that they represent an amazing record ... thanks for sharing them Phil and long may the numbers grow!

Following our disappointing 2-0 away defeat to Hitchin Town in the FA Cup last Saturday; today’s match presents a chance to get back to winning ways and progress in this top semi-pro football knockout competition. The final will be played at Wembley on Sunday 19th May 2019. Our opponents, Whyteleafe FC, opened their Bostik SE season with 4 straight wins, but erratic recent form has seen them draw 3 and lose 1 of their last 4 league encounters. The solitary league defeat of this season, by 2 goals to 1, coming from an away trip to Sittingbourne on September 15th. However, it is worth noting that the first of their draws was away to runaway league leaders Cray Wanderers 1-1 and most recent draw, a 2-2 scoreline, was recorded away to second-placed Phoenix Sports. The 15 points amassed from 8 matches sees them placed 5th in the Bostik SE league table, just below us, with a goal difference of 6 compared to our more favourable 9. Whyteleafe progressed to this round of the FA Trophy by defeating Bowers & Pitsea 4-1. Most recently, on Tuesday evening, Whyteleafe exited the Velocity Trophy following a 2-1 away defeat at the hands of Egham Town from the Bostik League South Central. Despite recent form I’m sure Whyteleafe will provide tough opposition under new manager, Harry Hudson. Once again, thank you all for your support today, it is greatly appreciated and really helps elevate team spirit. Let’s keep the Wembley FA Trophy dream alive boys! ... Enjoy the match ... MANAGER’S NOTES

Chris Agutter

Good afternoon everyone. Kicking off with a welcome to our tremendous support ..... the 500+ turnout on a cold Tuesday evening vs Horsham speaks volumes about our committed following - you really are the best and we are privileged to have such brilliant backing. Secondly, another welcome to the Whyteleafe directors, management, staff, players and supporters - I hope you have a safe journey down and have a decent day out at the Pilot Field (the result aside of course).

Winning 10 out of 12 with two very much avoidable losses to kick off the season is very positive ......

Winning 10 out of 12 with two very much avoidable losses to kick off the season is very positive, we’re well on track and most importantly we are improving in our performances ..... I really believe our win at home vs Horsham will be looked back on in time with even more pleasure and fondness I know they are a very good outfit and for us to be as in control and dominant as we were was a real statement. Today’s Trophy game is an opportunity to keep our winning momentum as well as our 100% winning record at home here at the Pilot Field. Whyteleafe are a dangerous side and I know will be well coached (I’ve come across their staff when they were working with Kinetic and Merstham), however, I also know that if we play to our high standards we can impose our game on them and come away with another positive performance, which I’m sure will lead to another win - the most important thing is that we stay humble, pay Whyteleafe the respect they deserve and work hard!

GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart A light hearted and serious look at football (not necessarily just football) at all levels, those who play, those who administrate and those of us who follow our various teams in this vast, lop sided pyramid of the game. At all times, views expressed are mine.

AND SO IT ENDS Mixed feelings after last weekend's FA Cup exit at Hitchin. Disappointing because the competition does still hold a bit of magic for us in the semi-pro game, disappointing because we played so well in that opening 20 odd minutes but didn't put any chances away and conceded two set-piece goals without ever looking inferior to a side from a higher league, disappointing because that's the end of the “Kerching” factor (albeit no real complaints - £18k is not to be sniffed at), disappointing because Cray took full advantage with a 7-2 whopping of Faversham as virtually a full Bostik SE programme went ahead while Horsham and us were otherwise engaged, pleased with three encounters against higher league sides that showed we can mix it and relieved that at last we can soon start to get our league campaign going again. 10 points adrift of Cray already. Three games in hand and an away fixture with Cray on the 10th of November (I will have to follow that from warmer climes over 8000 miles away) – but 10 points is still a big gap at such an early stage. What we don't want is Cray to do what Folkestone and Burgess Hill did in recent seasons and run away with the league. The FA Cup has showed what our lot can do against higher grade opposition – but the grind of the league is something else.

16

Not everyone returned from Hitchin empty handed. Paul Rush remember him, Mum and Dad looking after the club shop quite a few years back here posing with his 50/50 winnings at half-time.

Ups and downs - Town celebrate promotion at Wisbech 2001-2002 as the home keeper trudges off with his side relegated.

GET OUT OF THIS LEAGUE I frequently hear that, we have to “Get out of this league”. Well, yes, we all want promotion but whatever we might think of “This league” - it has to be earned with hard graft over 38 games. Whatever, this standard we play at is one level above county league – so what? Bostik SE is what it it is, we are where we are, and it will be hard work getting up to the next level. All the more so given the FA's appallingly mishandled reorganisation of the semipro game as they aim for the perfect triangle like structure. As stated before – a laudable aim, but a shambolic way of going about it as will become apparent at the end of this season with the promotions and relegations between Step 2 (National South and North), Step 3 and Step 4 (Where we play in Bostik SE). Football – well, any league based game – has the most natural progression you could want – promotion and relegation. Not so natural in recent years with the introduction of play-offs but prior to that – based on how you performed over 38, 42 or 46 games, months of graft – if you got all the ingredients in place you rightly earned a crack at a higher standard. I can only imagine how good the players feel about going up, or how bad they feel about going down – as supporters, we've all experienced both emotions. The FA has interfered hugely with this natural progression – we saw it last season when clubs that should have been relegated, weren't. Clubs that shouldn't have gone up – going up. And we will see more of this nonsense at the end of this season. Because of the FA's interference with the ups and downs it is all the more vital we go for that top place as the play-offs – bad as I think the premise is anyway – will be even more of a lottery this season with only 5 play-off winners going up from 7 step four divisions. So right now – easy for me to say – I'd have swapped a couple of those FA Cup wins for two league games and 6 points!

NOT YOU AGAIN.......! You Pilot Field veterans will recall Hastings Town's first encounter in the FA Trophy – well, three of them – against Whyteleafe who in those days played in Diadora One, the Isthmian League where, of course, they are today at the same standard as us here in what is now Bostik SE. In 1992-93, Hastings Town, as we were then, were still adjusting to the tough standards of Beazer Homes Premier football after the memorable promotion campaign of 91-92. That was pre National South and North – in those days, the Southern, Northern and Isthmian Premier divisions all fed direct into the Conference which meant that Beazer Homes (then sponsors of the Southern League) Premier football was of a higher standard than it's equivalent today. Yes, 3 encounters with Whyteleafe, then managed by Steve Kember. Town's first season in the Trophy after competing in the FA Vase. 19/9/92, drew 2-2 at Whyteleafe, attendance 195, scorers – Andy Blondrage and Sticky Willard. Replay 22/9, drew 1-1 here, watched by 306 spectators, with Keiran O'Shaugnessy getting a late equaliser and a second replay on 28/9 with 415 here to see Town win 3-0 with goals from Dean White and Keith Miles (2).

Social media can be so useful. Simon Newstead gets a tweet from Jim Brown who looks after all the stats etc for Coventry City asking about a friendly back in 1980. Simon refers it to me, my instinct every time for this if I don't know the answer is the guru Phil Donaldson. And Sandy Harmer comes up with the goods too the programme cover from the game. 38 years ago! Thanks gents! That was our best season in the Trophy with further wins over Margate (3-1, Ashworth – yes, the same Dan Ashworth who is now high up in the FA – Willard and Nealer, att 435), Wokingham (2-1, Henderson, Terry White, att 403) – then a memorable 1-1 draw at Dover Athletic with a late equaliser from Sticky Willard seen by 1129 punters (Town played an hour with 10 men after Tony Burt was sent off by referee David Ellary – a team performance on a par with the recent one at Leiston) and then an exit from the competition after a 0-2 defeat here in the replay seen by 611 spectators. I will never forget the eruption behind the Athletic goal when Sticky Willard equalised in that first game at Crabble. Some moments stay with you forever.

Semi-pro football is the bizz. Weather conditions have clearly resulted in the clear demarcation line between wet and dry on the trampoline like wooden terracing at Top Field's covered end on Saturday. 17

THE VISITORS HISTORY

WHYTELEAFE FC

FORMATIVE YEARS Prior to the Second World War there were several teams that competed locally using the Whyteleafe name, notably Whyteleafe Junior FC and Whyteleafe Albion. Whyteleafe Albion competed for many years but the club folded several years before the Second World War. A new club, simply called Whyteleafe FC, was formed in 1946. The new club commenced Junior football as members of the Caterham and Edenbridge, the Thornton Heath & District and the Croydon Leagues. Of these early years season 1951/52, was the most successful, with a strong 'Leafe line-up becoming Thornton Heath League champions, winners of two local charity cups and runners-up in both the Surrey County Junior Cup and the League Cup. Two years later they progressed to the Surrey County Intermediate League (Eastern Division) and were Division 1 champions in 1955/6. 1958 saw the significant transition from 'Junior' to 'Senior' status and entry into the Surrey Senior League. This change required the club to move from the New Barn Lane School ground, which was inadequate for senior football, and with a dynamic committee under the leadership of Secretary Dick Baxendine, the club purchased approximately four acres of farmland in nearby Church Road, where the club still play today. The original stand at Whyteleafe's old ground is still used by Kenley Primary School and is clearly visible from Valley Road about half a mile north of the current ground.

NEW GROUND, NEW START Play commenced on the new ground in season 1959/60, and in the early sixties the club gained minor rewards with the reserve team playing under the guidance of former Crystal Palace hero Roy Greenwood. The next success came as the 1960s drew to a close which saw 'Leafe as Surrey Senior League Champions and runners-up in the League Cup. In the 1970s the floodlight training area and stand

20

were built and in 1975 the club moved into the London Spartan League before joined the Athenian League in 1981. The main pitch floodlights were installed and the dressing rooms were moved to their current location in the early 1980s In the 1984/85 season, a league reorganisation saw the club enter Division Two South of the Isthmian League. In November 1986 Steve Kember joined the club as Manager having been associated with the club for some years previously when with Crystal Palace, with whom he had won considerable success. In two successive seasons Kember engineered the club through to the third qualifying round of the FA Cup on two occasions. A highly successful team in 1988/89 saw the club win promotion as runners-up in Division Two South to Division One. Steve Kember resigned in July 1993 and returned to Crystal Palace as a coach and after several successful and well-publicised stints as Caretaker Manager. Paul Hinshelwood briefly held the reins following Steve's departure and, following the resignation of his assistant Keith Wilkinson in October 1993, Lee Richardson became assistant manager and 1st team coach.

THE RICHARDSON YEARS

steered themselves away from relegation.

August 1994 saw Richardson appointed manager. This was a very popular appointment, as Lee had been associated with the club on and off since 1975, playing in excess of 400 games for the club.

Nicky's hard work and commitment was never in doubt, but things just didn't work, and in the following year he left the club. In January 2012 Steve Griffin was given the tough job of catching up 20th placed side Burgess Hill Town when 12 point adrift.

Season 1998/99 proved to be very mixed, with the club achieving good cup results, losing to Welling Utd in sight of a first round visit to Bristol Rovers in the FA Cup, and winning through to the last 32 in the FA Trophy, going out to the eventual winners Kingstonian in front of a then record home crowd of 945. But a season of chronic injury saw 'Leafe struggle to survive in the league and avoided relegation by winning the last game of the season. 1999/2000 proved the most momentous in the club's history. For the first time ever the club reached the 1st Round proper of the FA Cup when a crowd of 2,164, easily beat the previous season's record, in a match which saw them hold league opponents Chester City to a 0-0 draw before going down 1-3 in a replay at Chester. An imposing new stand was built at the top end of the ground just in time for the big match thanks to a superb effort from all involved with the club. The years that followed never lived up to 1999 and the club went into a slow but steady decline in fortunes.

MANAGERIAL CHANGES In 2002 the team hit a low ebb at Bracknell at Christmas, where they suffered a heavy defeat that prompted Richardson's resignation. Stuart Massey held the reins until October 2006 and after a spell with chairman Mark Coote picking the team, former Crystal Palace striker Dave Swindlehurst joined the club in December. The team did reasonably well under Swindlehurst, he led them to a comfortable mid-table position and the club's first cup final in 20 years. Leafe lost their Surrey Senior Cup final to Merstham at Imber Court and this proved to be Swindlehurst last game in charge. Stuart Massey was re-appointed Whyteleafe manager ahead of the 2008/09 season but only for a relatively short spell.

ALL CHANGE AGAIN The winter of 2009/10 was hard one and bad weather hit hard on the club's finances. Massey resigned, former AFC Wimbledon and Chipstead manager Nicky English took over in the summer of 2010. Despite the dire financial position the club found itself in English’s team had a purple patch after Christmas 2010, which included a remarkable 5-4 victory at eventual champions Met Police, and

The appointment coincided with a change in club constitution which saw Mark Coote become ownerchairman (as opposed to elected-chairman). The change gives the Club renewed hope of future development and progression yet the 2011/12 season ended in bitter disappointment and the club’s first relegation in its history despite drawing level with Burgess Hill at one point and only losing to an extraordinary result by the Hillians against Dulwich Hamlet.

WHAT GOES DOWN... After a season of moderate success in the Kent League, and being badly injured in a car accident, in the summer of 2013 Griffin stood down and former Whyteleafe player and Croydon manager John Fowler joined the club. Fowler built a completely new team in a very short time and one that made an immediate impact. In a memorable season for the club, the team went on to win the newly named Southern Counties East League by a clear 11 points and amongst much celebration the team rejoined the Isthmian League of which they had been members for 28 of the preceding 30 years. The first year back in the Ryman League was also momentous and the team belied expectation finishing in fifth place only to lose out in a play-off match at Folkestone. Leafe truggled to repeat this achievement the following year and in 2016, John Fowler decided he had taken the team as far as he could and stood down. Former Farnborough assistant manager Leigh Dynan took over in October and began a period of major squad reconstruction. Leigh guided the club to 14th place having picked up 64 points along the way. Leigh Dynan started the 2017/2018 season in strong fashion boasting some impressive pre-season results against teams from the league above with emphatic wins coming against Merstham and Dulwich Hamlet. The league season started strongly also with the club only suffering only two defeats in our first twelve games. Leigh resigned in October 2017 after a 1-1 draw at Church Road against Greenwich Borough. Leigh left and took up the hot seat at Kingstonian Football Club. The management duo of John Scarborough and Paul Dale guided the club for the remainder of the 2017/2018 season finishing in 8th position and narrowly missing out on the Bostik South play-offs. John Scarborough and Paul Dale both stepped down in the summer of 2018 due to other commitments.

18-year-old Princewill will be looking to make his football as memorable as his name on the pitch this season! Has spent time at Ipswich for trials before signing on the dotted line for the Leafe this year.

GUS LUKUNI (Midfielder) Some spectacular performances in the pre-season build up this year with his speedy runs down the wing, 18-year-old Gus is an exciting prospect who has already caught the eye of the supporters.

22

PREVIOUS MEETINGS WITH WHYTELEAFE FC Although the original Hastings United played Whyteleafe on a number of occasions our first meeting did not take place until season 1992/93 when we somewhat made up for lost time playing each other three times in the space of ten days as we strove to resolve an F.A. Trophy 1st Qualifying round tie drawing 2-2 at Church Road on Saturday, 19th September and then being held 1-1 after extra time in the replay here three days later. After winning the toss for choice of ground in the second replay, we replayed here again on Monday, 28th September, 1992 we ran 3-0 winners before a crowd of 416, our goals coming from Keith Miles (2) and Dean White. We then played a pre-season match at Whyteleafe on Tuesday, 29th July, 1997 when we won 4-2 with goals from Simon Fox (2), Liam Barham and Mark Browne. Our next and first league meeting took place at Whyteleafe on Tuesday, 14th September, 2004 in Division One of the Ryman League when we again ran out winners, this time 2-0 with goals from Chris Honey and Jon Wallis; however, we lost the return game here 1-2 on Saturday, 5th February, 2005 a crowd of 337 seeing Simon Rowland scoring our only goal. Overall, we played Whyteleafe in three consecutive seasons 2004/05 to 2006/07 in the Ryman League. In season 2014/15 we resumed our meetings and played Whyteleafe three times, United winning 2-1 away in the first qualifying round of the F.A. Cup, Sam Adams and Ade Olorunda the scorers. Both league matches being drawn, 0-0 at Whyteleafe and 2-2 at the Pilot Field in front of 336 spectators, Evan Archibald and Tim Olorunda on target for the U’s. In the subsequent three seasons we have met twice in the league each campaign, resulting in 4 wins and 2 defeats. The latest of those meetings, from last season, is shown below:

ON THIS DAY A look back at some of the matches played in past seasons on: Saturday, 13th October.

1956 Division One leaders Manchester United extended their unbeaten season to ten league games with a 3-1 win at lowly Sunderland, Tottenham Hotspur being three points back after a 5-0 home win against Cardiff City. It was a day of goals as Wolves beat Portsmouth 6-0 and Blackpool defeated local rivals Preston 4-0: In London, Arsenal returned to their roots and won 3-1 at Charlton Athletic. Joint Division Two leaders Leicester City and Stoke City both won away from home, Stoke defeating Lincoln City 1-0 and the Foxes winning 3-2 at Port Vale. The form book held good in Division Three (South) which was bad news for Brighton who lost 0-1 at leaders Southampton, the top four all winning.

We, then Hastings & St. Leonards, lost 3-7 to Old Varndeanians our goals scored by Crounch, Hinton and Mortimer. The original Hastings United defeated Worcester City here 4-2, before a crowd of 4,130, in the then single division Southern League.

1979 The eleven matches in Division One produced just seventeen goals with 0-0 being the most frequent result as Bolton Wanderers entertained Arsenal, Brighton hosted Leeds United, Middlesbrough who were at Stoke City and for the Midlands derby as Aston Villa played W.B.A. Over half the goals were scored in two games as Everton beat Crystal Palace 3-1 and Coventry City won 3-2 at Southampton. In Division Two the eleven matches averaged just two goals apiece, a tally boosted by Swansea City’s 4-1 victory over Fulham, London’s only defeat, as Chelsea beat Bristol Rovers 1-0, the same score by which Leyton Orient beat Watford and West Ham Utd won 2-1 at Leicester City; Charlton Athletic and Q.P.R. both drew. The top scoring game of the day was in Division Three where at Blackpool the home side defeated Brentford 5-4. Lincoln City also scored four defeating County rivals Scunthorpe Utd 4-0 in Division Four.

We, then Hastings Town, visited Selsey in Division Two of the Sussex County League where we won 4-1 with goals from Steve Rimmer (2), Kevin Barry and Gary Wilkins. The original Hastings United drew 1-1 at then Tonbridge AFC with an Ernie Batten goal in the Southern Division of the Southern League.

2001 There was no change in the leadership of the Barclays Premiership as none of the top six were beaten and so stayed put: Leaders Leeds United played at sixth placed Liverpool where the Reds had to come from being behind to a Harry Kewell goal to earn a point with a Danny Murphy equaliser. Thierry Henry and Robert Pires netted for second placed Arsenal in their 2-0 win at Southampton while third placed Manchester United won 3-1 at Sunderland. At Bolton Wanderers fourth placed Newcastle United did not score until just before half-time but then added three second-half goals for a best of the day 4-0 victory. Wolves extended their advantage at the top of the Nationwide Division One with a 3-0 victory at Bradford City while chasers Burnley lost 0-1 at Nottingham Forest staying second on goal difference despite Norwich City winning 2-0 at Gillingham. The top three in Division Two all won their placings only being decided on goal difference Brentford and Bristol City staying ahead of Brighton who won 2-1 at Huddersfield Town; this day the Bees gave away free admission and attracted a crowd of over eleven thousand – twice their normal gate – however, it was twice the size of the next attendance when charges applied.

We, then still Hastings Town, had no match until the following Tuesday as our scheduled opponents were still involved in the F.A. Cup competition.
