WELCOME

Club statement on Page 22 Good evening all.

Half-time Scout Investitures See Page 08

Welcome to the Pilot Field for tonight’s Bostik League Division One South East match against Greenwich Borough FC. We extend a warm welcome to the officials, players and supporters of our London based visitors. We hope they have an enjoyable, albeit ‘pointless’ evening with us, and wish them a safe trip back up the A21. A similar warm welcome is extended to the three match officials, Lee, Dominic and Ciaran. We are also pleased to welcome Andrew Lee, assistant manager of Westfield Youth FC and the team members of Westfield Youth U15’s. Thank you for your support tonight and we hope all the lads enjoy the match. Following our 4-2 defeat to Whyteleafe in the FA Trophy the boys bounced back with a gritty 1-0 away win over in Guernsey. Three very valuable points, especially with Thamesmead Town’s results now in serious doubt following their reluctant decision to go into Creditors Voluntary Administration.

Mark Cruttwell All at the club were very sad to hear of the passing of Mark Cruttwell, father of player Sam. Mark was a popular figure around the club who always helped out on match days. He will be sadly missed by us all. Our thoughts are with Sam and his family at this time. Rest in Peace Mark.

Today’s visitors currently sit in 18th position in the league table with 6 points from 8 matches. The 6 points coming from back-to-back away and home wins at the beginning of September, 2-1 at Herne Bay and a 4-0 home win over our last rivals Guernsey FC. A full listing of their results for this season to date can be found on the centre pages. Greenwich progressed to the 2nd qualifying round of the FA Trophy following Saturday’s 4-2 away victory over Mildenhall Town of the Bostik League North. This match went to extra-time at the first fixture thereby avoiding the need to replay. The score being 2-2 after 90 minutes. On a very sad note, we extend sincere condolences to Sam Cruttwell and his family following news that Mark, his father, had sadly passed away. Rest in Peace Mark. Thank you for your support this evening ... I hope you enjoy the match ... Win it boys! ... COYU’s ...

MANAGER’S NOTES

Chris Agutter

Good evening everyone. Welcome all once again to the Pilot Field - I’m hoping the cold weather doesn’t keep many of our fantastic support away! Struggling past Guernsey last week gave us so so so much satisfaction ..... a completely different match-day experience, a loud and vocal home support, a not-so-Pilot Field playing surface, and a side fired up following a poor day at the office the previous week against Thamesmead Town ..... a proper banana skin!!! We were absolutely delighted to come away with the 3 pts, we didn’t play well, we were pretty poor in fact, but we still found a way to win ..... that’s how leagues are won!!!

Rest in Peace Mark .... we will be fighting for your boy tonight!

Tonight we aim to maintain our 100% winning record at home in the Bostik South East Division as we entertain Greenwich Borough ..... a stat that we all take huge pride in, a stat that we must work hard to keep!! As well as welcoming Greenwich we also welcome a new ‘U’ ..... Lanre Azeez, a man who I’ve chased for a long time and am absolutely delighted to welcome!! The addition of Lanre completes our ‘attacking reinforcement plans’ ..... with the players at our disposal there are zero excuses not to continue our goalscoring start to the campaign. I’d like to finish with a word of support for the Cruttwell family, I’ve said most of what needs to be said in person ........ all that needs adding is Rest In Peace Mark .... we will be fighting for your boy tonight!

GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart A light hearted and serious look at football (not necessarily just football) at all levels, those who play, those who administrate and those of us who follow our various teams in this vast, lop sided pyramid of the game. At all times, views expressed are mine.

RIGHT THEN Time to get on with bread and butter football – the distractions (for that is all they are) of the FA Cup and Trophy are behind us, the club has done well financially with the best part of £20k banked, we've seen on three occasions how well the team can mix it with higher level sides – but now is time to concentrate on the league as they say. I get as caught up in the FA Cup razamataz as much as anyone does – but all the time in the background this season – Cray without any such distractions, winning, winning and winning. Indeed – as I tapped this out late last week – they hadn't lost a league game with 9 wins and a draw. Hitchin saw off Leatherhead in a 4th qualifying round replay last week, a 2-1 win seen by 637 punters after 1278 saw a 1-1 draw at Top Field where our FA Cup interest had come to an end a fortnight earlier. The local rag – The Comet, had rather unflatteringly described Hitchin's 2-0 win against the U's as a “routine win” which was – well, unflattering! To this day I stll wonder how that first 20 minutes didn't see us at least 2 up as we played some outstanding football. But there you go – it's all in the eye of the beholder. The Whyteleafe Trophy exit – well, one of those afternoons eh? The Trophy in it's early stages isn't

Semi-pro football the Russian way

16

usually a great crowd puller but having said that, 460 was actually a tremendous gate. Just a shame the result wasn't a good one - but no more distractions – and a week ago Sunday saw the U's flying over to Guernsey (Just HOW unreal is that for football at this level?) and doing the business, 1-0, clean sheet and that wide gap between us and Cray narrowed after they had won at Herne Bay the previous afternoon. We should have been at Whyteleafe for a league game on Saturday – sadly they were FA Trophy occupied after their pretty competent performance here in the previous round.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE 45 MINUTES MADE I frequently hear that, we have to “Get out of this league”. Well, yes, we all want promotion but whatever we might think of “This league” - it has to be earned with hard graft over 38 games. Whatever, this standard we play at is one level above county league – so what? Bostik SE is what it it is, we are where we are, and it will be hard work getting up to the next level. All the more so given the FA's appallingly mishandled reorganisation of the semipro game as they aim for the perfect triangle like structure. As stated before – a laudable aim, but a shambolic way of going about it as will become apparent at the end of this season with the promotions and relegations between Step 2 (National South and North), Step 3 and Step 4 (Where we play in Bostik SE). Football – well, any league based game – has the most natural progression you could want – promotion and relegation. Not so natural in recent years with the introduction of play-offs but prior to that – based on how you performed over 38, 42 or 46 games, months of graft – if you got all the ingredients in place you rightly earned a crack at a higher standard. I can only imagine how good the players feel about going up, or how bad they feel about going down – as supporters, we've all experienced both emotions. The FA has interfered hugely with this natural progression – we saw it last season when clubs that should have been relegated, weren't. Clubs that shouldn't have gone up – going up. And we will see more of this nonsense at the end of this season. Because of the FA's interference with the ups and downs it is all the more vital we go for that top place as the play-offs – bad as I think the premise is anyway – will be even more of a lottery this season with only 5 play-off winners going up from 7 step four divisions. So right now – easy for me to say – I'd have swapped a couple of those FA Cup wins for two league games and 6 points!

There's only one Jeff Stelling. Memorable verbal wheel spin recently when he updated the "Roath Ravers" score

Nuneaton Borough away, Southern Prem, more years ago than I care to remember THAMESMEAD Grim times apparently – at Thamesmead who have gone into Creditors Voluntary Administration. As best I can see – unless things change for the better, which sounds very unlikely – it looks like they will fold and all results will be expunged. This, if it happens, has an impact on us of course, our 5-1 win and the three points in our opening game of the season will be wiped out. Something of a coincidence – Thamesmead have been tenants at Princes Park , home of National League South, Dartford who themselves went through all kinds of upheavals back in the early 90s. And that impacted on Hastings Town who had an August Bank Holiday win against the Darts expunged, the loss of three valuable points at a time when Town were adjusting to the higher demands of Beazer Homes League Premier Division football. It was known Dartford were in trouble when they came here for that 19921993 fixture and as I trundled up Elphinstone Road after a late late Keith Miles goal had won the game, I recall saying to a mate that it would be just our luck if they blew out – and within a week exactly that happened. Yea I know – “Just our luck”, sounds a bit selfish given what Dartford then, and Thamesmead now were going through – but you get my point, I'm sure. Phoenix Sports will also lose out points wise if Thamesmead fold, they beat them 1-0 earlier this season. It means we end up with another game in

hand on Cray who will be 13 points ahead of us with things as they stand on Thursday afternoon last week when I knocked this up. Yes, we will have four games in hand blah blah blah – but we've been there before. Few seasons back we had six or seven games in hand and it added up to nothing in the end. South Park had up to ten TEN games in hand a couple of season ago when they had a good FA Trophy run. It all came to nothing league wise. Thamesmead aren't the only club in trouble. Our old Southern League opponents Nuneaton Borough – an up and down club if ever there was – are on a downward spiral again. Truro City are currently groundsharing with Torquay – a round trip of 200 miles for supporters. If we were to ground share with a club between Portsmouth and Southampton – well, say no more! But things can improve too. Merthyr Town were in all kinds of trouble last season – they had to field a team of mid teenagers when it all fell part at PenyDarren Park (480 mile round trip I recall 20 years ago) and lost 13-1 at Chesham. They seem to have turned it all around since then and are currently just outside the Southern Prem South play off places. And Dulwich Hamlet – big dispute with their landlords last season saw them evicted from Champion Hill and sharing with Tooting & Mitcham. All appears to have been resolved and they are playing National South fixtures at home after promotion last season.

5-2 We don't often ship five at home – up till last season that is, when this evening's opposition enjoyed a purple 50 odd minutes and turned a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 half-time lead and a 5-2 win. Er, we need to put that one right!

HISTORY

trophy less drought until winning their seventh South London Alliance Premier Division title in 1974.

London Spartan League Woolwich Borough Council Athletic Club Greenwich Borough FC was formed as Woolwich Borough Council Athletic Club in 1928 and played most of their home games at Danson Park, Welling. The club joined the Woolwich and District League and were champions at the first attempt. They also reached the final of the Woolwich and District League Cup but lost 0–3 to Fibrent Athletic at Bexleyheath Town's ground. Owing to their success, "Borough" was awarded Senior status and joined the Kent Amateur League Division 1, where they failed to build upon a bright start over a number of years. The club moved a ground at Harrow Meadow, Eltham (now built over for housing) in 1933 and briefly disbanded during World War II.

South London Alliance League In 1948 they relinquished their Senior status to join the South London Alliance League Division 2. In 1955, Woolwich Borough Council won the South London Alliance League Division 2 title and also came runners-up in the Elizabeth Jacques Cup. The following season they won the Division 1 title and were promoted to the South London Alliance Premier Division. The club then enjoyed their most successful period ever when they won the Premier Division title for six years running from 1961 to 1966 inclusive. During this time the club was twice winners (1965, 1966) and once runners-up (1964) of the Queen Mary Cup. In 1965 the club changed their name to London Borough of Greenwich FC following a change of London Borough boundaries. The change of name was inauspicious and the club endured a

20

In 1976, the club transferred to the London Spartan League and managed to finish runnersup in the Queen Mary Cup. The club regained its Senior status the following year. In 1978, Borough celebrated its 50th anniversary by inaugurating their floodlights at Harrow Meadow with a game against Charlton Athletic in front of over 2,000 spectators. The club continued to enjoy periodic success in the 1980s, including winning the London Spartan League Senior Division title in 1980 and the London Spartan League Senior Cup in 1983.

Kent Football League For the 1984–85 season, the club changed to its current name of "Greenwich Borough FC" upon joining the Kent Football League. The club finished sixth in the league but also managed to win both the Kent League Cup and the Kent Senior Trophy. In this season, a promising Sunday League player called Ian Wright made his non-league debut for the club, later going on to play for Crystal Palace, Arsenal, West Ham United and the England National Team. In 1987, Greenwich Borough won both the Kent League and the Kent League Cup double, scoring 113 goals along the way. In 1988, Borough again won the League and hoped to progress to the Southern Football League by way of significant planned improvements to their Harrow Meadow ground which were eventually blocked by Greenwich Council. In the 1989–90 season Greenwich Borough reached the 4th round of the FA Vase before losing 4–5 in a replay against Harefield United. The club re-entered the FA Cup in 1993 and managed to progress to the 3rd Qualifying Round before being soundly beaten 0–4 at home to Molesey.

GREENWICH BOROUGH FC The 1997–98 season saw a restructuring of the Kent League (known since 2013 as the Southern Counties East Football League) and Greenwich Borough being placed in the newly formed Premier Division. The Borough finished in 5th – their highest position for 9 years – and also won both the Kent League Cup and the Kent Senior Trophy. In 2001, Borough finished as runners-up in the Kent League Cup, losing to Ramsgate in the final. In the 2007–08 season the Borough set a new club record in the FA Vase by beating Horley Town, Thamesmead Town, Chichester City United, Wembley FC and Harefield United to reach the 5th round, before finally bowing out to Hungerford Town 1–2 in a tightly contested replay. The club also achieved a 3rd place finish in the league.

The end of the 2008–9 season saw the sale of Harrow Meadow to property developers, which precipitated a number of ground sharing agreements with other local clubs including Erith & Belvedere, Holmesdale (from 2009) and Dartford (from 2013). In 2016, the club announced that they had signed a new long-term lease at Badgers Sports ground as Head Tennants thus returning to the Borough of Greenwich to Eltham through a ground sharing arrangement with Cray Valley (PM) for the Badgers Sports Ground on Middle Park Avenue In their first season in the Ryman League South they finished the Season in third place with a total of 95 points .

In the 2013–14 season, the club reached the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup before being knocked out to Worcester City of the Conference North division. In the 2015–16 season, the club achieved promotion to the Ryman Isthmian League South under player/manager Gary Alexander. In their first season in the Ryman League South Greenwich Borough finished the season in third place with a total of 95 points.

Ground Borough originally shared Harrow Meadow with a cricket club and the distance from the changing rooms to the original football pitch caused the ground to fail league grading requirements. The club subsequently acquired full use of the facilities and were able to move onto the area formerly occupied by the cricket pitch. The ground had a clubhouse and floodlights, but no seating and only a portion of the pitch perimeter had hard standing.

PILOT FIELD V RELOCATION Lets get a few things straight! There seems to be a lot of misconceptions circulating in terms of the facts in connection with the above. As a Club we love our ground at the Pilot Field but over the last few years we have realised that for the Club to continue to operate from the Pilot Field really is untenable as the ground cannot cope with the modern-day requirements of an ambitious football club. The brief précis of the facts that need considering are as follows:

Pilot Field: - Main stand built in the 1920's. Now requires under legislation a very costly annual structural survey inspection which for 2018/19 is about to be undertaken by a firm of structural engineers. The current estimate for structural repairs is circa £100,000. The Club does not have this money, and even if it did, repairs would only be a short term fix until the next amount of money for structural rectification work was required. - The overall ground in general, due to its age. requires an awful lot of maintenance work on a regular basis just to keep it in fair order. In the summer each year a group of our valued volunteers and some of our Board work tremendously hard to rectify maintenance issues and smarten up appearance. This is before all the quickly growing grassed areas also have to be dealt with. We clear the ground of weeds each summer but they are soon back and we just don't have the manpower to deal with the weeds that run riot on a more regular basis. - We only have the one grass Pilot Field pitch which cannot take massive use. This means both the Club and its Academy have to source

22

other facilities for training and in the Academy's case matches. Facilities in Hastings are not particularly good. Our Academy teams have to play out of town because of this. There is not one full size floodlit 3G pitch in Hastings. - Our ground has no off road parking. This is an issue for our supporters who have to find parking spaces in surrounding roads but is an even bigger issue for local residents on match days who suffer from cars blocking access and egress. - We have looked at developing the Pilot Field into a modern purpose built ground but this is just not feasible. The scheme we put together for Pilot Field redevelopment estimated that the cost of such a scheme to completion, depending on the final design, would be between £3,000,000 and £5,000,000 and any design would not resolve the fact that it would still be a one pitch facility and of course overall paramount is the fact the Club could not possibly fund such a redevelopment.

Relocation: - Club and community get a new modern purpose built stadium that would be designed in a way to limit the maintenance required as the years go by. - Facilities within the stadium to have Club and community use such consisting of social and function spaces, meeting rooms, fitness and leisure gym and health, wellbeing and sports therapy areas. - For the Club and community floodlit football/sports pitches at least one of which would be a full sized all weather 3G pitch. - Off road parking consisting of a considerable number of car spaces. When you consider reasonably all of the above the proposal to relocate the Club is a sound one and is probably the only way to perhaps guarantee the future life of the Club.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS WITH GREENWICH BOROUGH FC Although the clubs had previously met in league football with teams below senior status, the clubs’ first teams had not played in the same leagues before season 2016/17. Notwithstanding there were two previous meetings between the sides but both took place over thirty years ago. On Saturday, 9th October, 1982 we as Hastings Town visited Greenwich Borough and played on their ground at Harrow Meadow in Eltham in the Preliminary Round of the F.A. Vase, a tie which Borough won 2-1, our goal being scored by Pete Nwaji. Two seasons later in what turned out to be our final season playing at The Firs, Greenwich Borough were our first opponents in the season’s programme of pre-season matches – There is no full record of that match played on Saturday, 28th July, 1984, however, it is known that it finished as a 4-4 draw. Matches in the past two seasons have finished as follows: Tuesday 27 September 2016 Ryman Div One South

ON THIS DAY A look back at some of the matches played in past seasons on: Tuesday, 30th October.

1984 The only top grade action was in the third round of the Football League’s Milk Cup where some odd results could only be explained by the strength of the sides fielded. A John Gregory goal was enough for Q.P.R. to knock out Aston Villa at Loftus Road while Fulham went down 2-3 at Sheffield Wednesday. At Fellows Park, Walsall held Chelsea to a 2-2 draw after twice being ahead, Colin Lee eventually earning the Londoners a replay with a goal six minutes from time. Southampton and Wolves also shared four goals to set another replay while Ipswich Town and Newcastle United shared two goals at Portman Road. An Alan Brazil goal was not enough for Manchester United who lost by the odd one of three at home to Everton for who John Gidman and Graeme Sharp were on target.

We, then Hastings Town, had no midweek match having beaten Bexhill Town 5-4 at home in the Sussex County League Cup on the previous Saturday ahead of a trip to Herne Bay in the first round of the F.A. Vase.

2001 In the first group stage of the UEFA Champions League Liverpool beat Brussia Dortmund 2-0 at Anfield with goals from Vladimir Smicer and Stephen Wright while Arsenal lost 1-3 at Schalke. The Gunners were two goals and had a player sent off inside twenty minutes, the home side going further ahead before Sylvian Wiltord pulled one back with twenty minutes to go. There were no Premiership matches and no games affecting the three leading sides in Division One of the Nationwide League, however, Norwich City went up to fourth after a 2-0 victory at Grimsby Town going above Burnley who were held 2-2 at Gillingham. Some of the division two and three sides were involved in the LDV Vans Football League Trophy ties including Brighton who progressed to the Southern Area quarter-finals with a 2-1 win over Wycombe Wanderers. Again it was a fourth round replay night in the F.A. Cup where the game of local interest saw Lewes progress to the first round and a trip to Stoke City after beating Mangotsfield Town 2-0 at the Dripping Pan. Eastwards in the Kent derby Folkestone Invicta crashed out 1-5 at Welling United.

We, then Hastings Town, travelled to Ashford Town in the Eastern Division of the Southern League where we won 2-0 with goals from Danny Simmonds and Simon Yates before a crowd of 380.

2007 West Ham United secured a place in the quarter-finals of the Carling League Cup with a 2-1 victory at Coventry City in a fourth round replay after coming from behind with an own goal and one in added time from Carlton Cole. In Coco Cola Division One Nottingham Forest moved up two places above Brighton to sixth after they drew 0-0 with Oldham Athletic. The other senior action saw sides replaying fourth qualifying round ties in the EON sponsored F.A. Cup where the biggest crowd at these ties was at Aldershot where over two thousand saw them progress knocking out Crawley Town 1-0. Four of the other six ties were also decided by one-goal margins as Weymouth won by the same score at Hitchin town while nearby Stevenage beat Salisbury also 1-0. Barrow and Halifax Town progressed with 2-1 home wins but there were more emphatic victories as Cambridge United beat Stafford 5-1 and Forest Green Rovers knocked out Eastleigh 4-1. The following evening Lewes beat Grays Athletic 2-0 to earn an away tie at Mansfield Town.

We visited Ramsgate in the Premier Division of the Ryman League but lost 1-4 before a crowd of 284, our goal scored by Danny Spice.
