WELCOME

The Club was delighted that Hastings Borough Council Cabinet have given their initial backing to the Club's proposals to develop a new purpose-built stadium with ancillary facilities available for community use on Tilekiln Recreation Ground. The stadium would have an initial capacity of 1,950 but would be built in a future-proofed way so the capacity could be easily increased to meet required FA ground grading across the National League System.

Good evening all.

The proposed new development will take the Club forward and protect its future. It will allow the Club to introduce such as women and girls, disability and walking football which to date the Club has not had the facilities to cater for. It will also allow the Club's football academy to develop further.

We return to Pilot Field action this evening after a 2-1 win here 10 days ago against Three Bridges in front of a season equalling top home league attendance of 479.

Now the hard work begins in terms of getting the project to a conclusion to the satisfaction of the Club, Council, FA, and Sport England.

Welcome to the Pilot Field for tonight’s Bostik League Division One South East match against Herne Bay FC. We extend a warm welcome to the officials, players and supporters of our Kent coast visitors. We hope they have an enjoyable evening, and wish them a safe return trip, but hopefully without any points from the contest. A similar warm welcome is extended to the three match officials, Referee Daniel Proctor and his two Assistants, Daniel Friar and Joseph McKay.

A week ago today, over at Hill Park, Brighton, we advanced to the Sussex Senior Cup 3rd Round after defeating Saltdean United 4-2. We will now face, here at the Pilot Field, the winners of the Lewes versus Brighton & Hove Albion U23s 2nd Round tie, to be played at the Dripping Pan on Wednesday, 21st November. Sunday saw the U’s travel to Bromley for a rearranged top of the table clash with runaway league leaders Cray Wanderers. Unfortunately we returned down the A21 empty-handed following only our second league defeat of this season, by 2 goals to 1. By all accounts the match was a tremendous advert for Isthmian League football and sees undefeated Cray with a ten-point lead over all other Bostik South East division rivals. Today’s visitors currently sit in 19th position in the league table with 5 points from 9 matches. Herne Bay’s only league win coming from an away victory over Ramsgate back on 25th September, 5-4. So let’s talk about that cracking awayday at Cray Wanderers on Sunday ..... it was an absolute pleasure to of played a part in a fantastic football match between two teams with a clear style and playing philosophy, a real 50/50 game which I genuinely feel we SHOULD of had won by half-time. However, it wasn’t to be - we missed chances whilst Cray took theirs - they won the battle on the day but the war is far from over! The biggest winner on the day, was for me, the Isthmian league itself ..... two teams playing a modern, NON-PREHISTORIC brand of football .... so much talent on display being encouraged to be expansive and expressive - a great advert for the league no doubt! Tonight we aim to maintain our 100% league winning record at home .... we have turned the Pilot Field into a fortress, teams know that they’re in for a long night when they face us and we will be aiming to make it a very long night for Herne Bay this evening .... we will run, fight and chase as always ..... we will be doing everything we can to put another 3 points on the board!

ONE TOO MANY As in one 2-0 deficit too many. United cannot be expected to keep clawing back two goal deficits as the Sunday result at Cray shows. Must have been so frustrating as I followed the game on Twitter and from what I read found it hard to fathom being a goal behind at half time. With the Thamesmead situation surely about to be resolved - I think most of their players have gone - that gap between us and Cray could become a massive 13 points.

IT'S A SMALL WORLD And so it is. 8500 miles away, Angeles City, The Philippines - just getting ready to watch England take on the All Blacks and discussing the weekend's sporting events with Lucas who manages my regular watering hole - Phillies. Having dismissed the Premier League fixtures I remind him that THE premier event of the weekend will be taking place the next day at Hayes Lane - Cray Wanderers vs Hastings United. Having expected the usual 'Who?' response (All the more so given the current distances involved) it turned out that Lucas, a very well travelled Scotsman, used to run the Mail Coach pub in the London, Liverpool Street area and amongst his regulars was a Cray Wanderers fan, John! Sadly, the Mail Coach has gone the way of many English boozers but Phillies is alive and well and Saturday night's gas with Lucas, all those miles away, showed what a small world it is, eh?

WOULD YOU BE A REF? The Twitter screen shot re Chris Waddle's comments wrongly sums up his views. It's not the officiating he was going on about, more what the officials have to put up with. I have ranted and raved down the years about referees - mention Paul Vosper or Barry Knight in my presence and triple my blood pressure meds. But Chris Waddle - a bloke who's been there at the highest level was dead right to point out the problems refs have to put up with. Mistakes will be made, referees will vary in ability and it is high time those who run football at the highest level gave officials the assistance they need. Love it or hate it, football is a huge multibillion pound industry (Raheem Sterling about to sign a ÂŁ300,000 a week contract according to the BBC) and full tech back up is long overdue. It's crazy that VAR is so limited in it's applications. Wolves had a good goal disallowed against Spurs for off side - which wasn't off side. Gary Lineker on Match of the Day that night wearily asked why VAR couldn't be utilised for off side. Pretty pertinent point he raised there. The good refs out there - and plenty of them are good - are sadly remembered for what they get wrong. If VAR can help with more than crossing the goal line questions then like Lineker said 10 days ago, why not use it??

It could be argued that Herne Bay FC had their most successful season in their 125th year. Having been runners up two years running in the Kent League they secured the League Championship with games to spare and had a superb run in the FA Vase, becoming only the second Kent League club to reach the semi-final stage where they went out to Northern League side West Auckland Town over the two legs by the odd goal in seven (4-3.) Herne Bay were formed in 1886 and began life in the East Kent League, then having a short period in the Kent League, before winning the East Kent League in four successive years between 1902 and 1906 returning to the Kent League as a result. 1953 saw the move to Winch’s Field. Over 1,000 spectators saw their first match at their new home; a 2 - 2 draw against Tunbridge Wells Reserves in Kent League Division 2. Within two years they lifted the Division 2 title, winning promotion to Division 1. In the 1957/58 season the club won The Kent Amateur Cup beating Bromley 2 - 0 in the final. The following season saw the Kent League fold and a move to the Aetolian League followed. The 1964/65 season saw another move to Division 2 of the Athenian League, where they enjoyed several successful seasons followed by promotion to Division 1 on winning Division 2 in 1970/71. A good run in the FA Cup saw the Bay reach the 4th qualifying round, where they lost to the then ‘mighty’ Margate in front of a record home attendance of 2,303. At the start of the 1974/75 campaign the Club returned to the Kent League, and in the 1978/79 season they had good runs in the

Cup competitions; defeating Welling United in the Kent Senior Trophy and losing to Sheppey United in the Kent League Cup. The nineties saw the Club become the most successful and consistent side in the Kent League, winning four Kent League titles. The 1996/97 season was without equal in the history of the Kent League. Within the space of four weeks the Club won the Kent Senior Trophy, The Kent League Division 1 Cup and The Kent League Championship. A unique treble! A complete change of management and playing staff took place after the 1997-98 season, with manager Tommy Sampson leaving the Club to take over the reins at Deal Town, taking the majority of the established first team players with him. That Deal Town side became the first Kent League club to win the FA Vase at Wembley in the last ever Vase Final staged at the old stadium in May 2000. The team had a fantastic 2000/01 season finishing runners-up in the Premier Division, scored 93 goals in the league. Nick Denly (father of England cricketer Joe Denly) received an unprecedented three ‘manager of the month’ awards in his first full season at the helm. However the 2001/02 season proved to be one of great disappointment. Exiting all cup competitions at the first round stage and finishing a poor 7th position in the league, despite being one of the few teams to defeat league and cup double winners, Maidstone. A major grant was awarded to provide new perimeter fencing and refurbishment of the changing facilities and these works were complete prior to the start of the 2003/04 season, when the club celebrated 50 years at Winch’s Field. Former Gillingham and Maidstone player, Jason Lillis took over the reins for the 2004/05 season that proved to be very successful as Bay finished runners up in both the League and League Cup, losing out to Ramsgate in both competitions.

Both the 2005/06 and 2006/07 seasons proved to be very disappointing and with several senior players, and Jason, leaving the Club during the 2007/08 season, the Club built on the success of Herne Bay Youth with the introduction of a number of very good young players into the first team squad. This proved very beneficial and these players formed the basis of the first team squad for this 2008/09 season. Along with some very influential experienced players introduced by new manager, Barry Morgan, the Club had high hopes for a successful 2008/09 campaign. Unfortunately a run of five defeats in sixmatches in October severely dented any promotion prospects. Despite a twelve match winning sequence Bay fell just short at the end of the campaign and a defeat in the final match saw them finish in 6th position in the League. The majority of the young squad were retained for the 2009/10 season and with new sponsors there was a renewed optimism within the Club. With the appointment of Simon Halsey as Manager, Herne Bay FC pushed on to finish runners up in the Kent League Premier Division two seasons running, the second of those going downto the last few minutes of the last match where a goal at Tunbridge Wells gave Hythe Town the title. But, in season 2011/12 Herne Bay swept all before them, narrowly missing out on a Wembley appearance in the FA Vase and capturing the Kent League Premier Division title and promotion to the Ryman League. The 2013/14 season saw another new start for the Bay with Sam Denly (son of former manager Nick Denly) taking up the managerial reigns following a disappointing first season in the Ryman League where immediate relegation back to Step 5 was narrowly avoided. Achieved highest ever finish and points total in the 2014/15 campaign in Herne Bay â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;s third season at this level. The 2015/16 season Bay faired even

Herne Bay FC managers, Jermaine Darlington and John Embery better, sitting in the play-off position for most of the season and with a number of poor results in March, Bay finally finished 8th, surpassing their highest finish in the Isthmian league achieved in the previous season. Retaining all the players for the 2016/17 season Bay expected to achieve a better position, but a number of poor results in the early part of season set the tone for the rest of the campaign. Bay hovered around relegation zone until late January. The player's budget was cut and immediately there was an improvement in results. A ten match unbeaten run saw Bay climb away from the relegation zone with an eventual finish in 17th place. Sam Denly resigned at the end of the season and all of the players left the club. New managers, professional players, John Embery and Jermaine Darlington, were appointed and they have built a totally new side comprising a large number of very talented young players, along with some experienced older players. This is the second time in the last 17 years that a totally new side has been formed and to blood these youngsters into what always proves to be a very competitive level of football. the club were delighted with a mid table finish in 12th place. A couple of players have moved on but with new signings Matt Fry, James White, Nick Reeves and Connor Pring, Embery is looking for a higher finish this season, maybe with a shot at reaching the play-offs.

ON THIS DAY A look back at some of the matches played in past seasons on: Tuesday, 13th November.

1973 Once again international matches restricted the domestic programme – England playing Italy the following evening. However, two weeks after their original meeting Wolves entertained Tranmere Rovers in a Football League Cup third round replay and this time ran out 2-1 winners. There was just one Division Two match which saw Sunderland move up five places to eighth after beating Bolton Wanderers 3-0. Bristol Rovers extended their lead at the top of Division Three to four points after they defeated Southport 3-1 while below them Huddersfield Town and Plymouth Argyle moved up to sixth and seventh places after Town defeated Shrewsbury 1-0 while Argyle had a similar result at home to Grimsby Town. Single goals were popular as Brighton won by that margin at Walsall. There was also no change at he top of Division Four but Bury moved up to fourth with a 2-1 win over fellow challengers Lincoln City.

We, then still Hastings & St. Leonards, had no midweek match having won 4-2 at Selsey in a Sussex County League Division Two fixture the previous Saturday and ahead of a game with Wick on The Firs. The original Hastings United drew 1-1 at Tonbridge Angels in a Kent Midweek Trophy group match, however, it was to be the last game played in the competition because of the subsequent ban on floodlight football.

2007 Ahead of England’s international friendly with Austria there were no fixtures apart from the Football League’s Johnstone’s Paints Trophy where the Area Quarter-Finals were played. In the Northern Section Bury won 2-1 at Leeds United and Stockport County progressed 3-0 at Carlisle United while Morecambe and Grimsby Town required penalties to win at Hartlepool United and home to Doncaster Rovers. In the Southern Section Gillingham coasted through defeating Dagenham & Redbridge 4-0 while M.K. Dons won 2-0 at Bournemouth and Swansea City saw off Yeovil Town 1-0. The round was completed the following evening when Brighton beat Cheltenham Town 4-1.

We had no midweek match having lost 0-1 to Leyton here in the Premier Division of the Ryman Isthmian League the previous Saturday and ahead of the next home league game against AFC Wimbledon.

2012 There were a limited number of games as no league fixtures had been arranged due to England’s visit to Sweden the following day and other international friendly matches that week. Notwithstanding there were eight F.A. Cup first round replays of which three went to extra time, two of which then requiring penalties to determine a winner. Extra time failed to produce a goal, after a 1-1 score, as Slough Town entertained Mansfield Town at their adopted Beaconsfield home; however, it was the Midlanders who progressed with a 4-1 victory on spot kicks. At Bradford City it was 3-3 after extra time against Northampton Town and the home side who went through 4-2 on penalties. The tie at Barrow also almost went to extra time but the home side knocked out Guisley with a lone Gary Hunter goal two minutes into added time. M.K. Dons recorded the biggest win a 6-1 victory over Cambridge City, Shaun Williams bagging a brace; Scott Rendall scored a goal in each half as Luton Town won 2-0 at Nuneaton Borough.

We entertained Bognor Regis Town in the Premier Division of the Ryman Isthmian League and drew 1-1 before a crowd of 359, our goal scored by Bailo Camara.
