WELCOME

Sam Adams First Team Captain Midfielder Good afternoon all.

Welcome to the Pilot Field for today’s Bostik League Division One South East match against Whitstable Town FC. We extend a warm welcome to the officials, players and supporters of the north Kent coast club. We hope they have an enjoyable afternoon, and wish them a safe return trip, hopefully without any of the spoils from the contest. A similar warm welcome is extended to the three match officials, Referee Isaac Searle and his two Assistants, Aaron Conn and Joseph Dann-Pye. We return to Pilot Field action this aftermoon following Tuesday’s emphatic 5-0 win over Whitstable Town’s near neighbours Herne Bay FC. An excellent clean sheet performance was played out in front of a great midweek attendance of 360. Today is a special day for Tuesday evening’s ‘Man of the Match’, Sam Adams. A very significant career fixture, as Sam is set to make his 500th senior Club appearance. What a tremendous achievement. It is not very often you get to congratulate a player for making 500 appearances for his hometown club. On behalf of everyone involved with the Club - Congratulations Sam for reaching this remarkable sporting milestone. Back to today’s fixture ... our visitors currently sit in 8th position in the league table with 18 points from 12 matches. A full listing of Whitstable Town’s results, for this season to date, can be found on the centre pages. Finally, thank you for your support this afternoon ... I hope you enjoy the match ... Win it boys! ... COYU’s ... Have a good one Sam!

MANAGER’S NOTES Good afternoon everyone. I think it’s only fitting to talk about the Club legend that is Super Sammy Adams .... He rejoined the Club during Hinsh’s tenure and I can remember the debate amongst staff as to whether or not Sammy was the right fit. Was he too similar to then Captain Simon Johnson, did Sammy bring what was needed to the squad at the time ..... thank God Hinsh took the plunge! I can remember so clearly after 5 minutes of his first session back I thought wow! ..... both feet, a great ability to receive with good body shape, hardworking, energetic, great awareness, a talker, a leader ....... I was shocked how good he was!! So, following Hinsh’s departure when I was given the gig I knew from day one that this guy would be my Captain ...... a role model who EVERYONE at the Club could aspire to again he’s that good!!

Chris Agutter

... Sammy is an HUFC legend, a fantastic servant to the Club who has consistently delivered whilst being a man of principle, honesty and integrity ...

Not only is he a great player (who’s already bagged another 10 goals this season) ..... Sammy more importantly is a proper decent human being. The ‘Sammy story’ that epitomises the man better than most is ...... in the car together, heading up to the U23 Cup Final last season, me and Sam we’re discussing next season, new players, ideas, plans etc etc ...... and he said one of the most refreshing things I’ve ever heard ..... he said, “Aggi, if you ever needed more money to bring in a better player I’d take a pay cut to help you out” ..... selfless, honest and always putting the team before himself - that’s why he’s our captain!! Irrelevant of today’s result and how he performs Sammy is an HUFC legend, a fantastic servant to the Club who has consistently delivered whilst being a man of principle, honesty and integrity ... on behalf of the staff and players ... THANK YOU SUPER SAMMY ADAMS!

GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart A light hearted and serious look at football (not necessarily just football) at all levels, those who play, those who administrate and those of us who follow our various teams in this vast, lop sided pyramid of the game. At all times, views expressed are mine.

MOST EMPHATIC Well done all. Despite the inconvenience of a kick off at 3.45 am, Pilot Field affairs were monitored here in Angeles City and any potential banana skin scenarios were emphatically despatched five times over. Herne Bay might be struggling at the opposite end of the table but it's still 90 minutes graft to be put in. And after the disappointment at Hayes Lane on Sunday, this was just what the doctor ordered. The clean sheet was very welcome too. It's early days still - lots of ups and downs ahead - but Cray do appear to be getting all the ingredients in place for a Folkestone / Burgess Hill like runaway at the top. At this stage of the season the serious contenders begin to make themselves properly known. Tuesday night's win was very welcome. Sunday's result, the Thamesmead issue notwithstanding - we are rightly well in the chase.

TILEKILN FULL CIRCLE So, looks like we're back where we started in terms of where, er, we might end up. Personally

Great sporting picture from '17 of the All Blacks and Lions rugby teams after the 1-1 series draw.

- mixed feelings for your correspondent regarding a new stadium. The first time I came here 42 years ago I was taken with the old place - it oozed character and still does. I have always liked the idea of a renovated Pilot Field with the old speedway track removed, being closer all round and new infrastructure. Expensive stuff all of it - who pays etc etc. All the logical points. I've never been entirely sure about local authorities putting public money into sporting facilities and in these never ending days of Austerity it seems all the more questionable. But then I seem to recall public money going into the White Rock Theatre years ago and thinking then that if that was good for theatre goers etc etc...... Whatever, wherever - the team, the club is what it's all about. Let's all carry on following the U's and leave the new stadium to the experts. Just one thing though - talk of a 1950 capacity? Rather low?

Continuing on the rugby theme - heading into Edinburgh on the train from Aberdeen recently Scottish Rugby HQ at Murrayfield.

16

PPG Points per game - the new football benchmark brought in by the FA as part of it's utterly inept, needlessly complex, long drawn out and most unfair way of reconstructing the semi pro game. The perfect 'pyramid' structure? Absolutely. The way you're going about it? Clueless. Peter Miller, a Ware FC supporter follows his lot in Bostik South Central - step 4 like us. Windy Gale, a long time U's follower pointed me via Twitter to Peter's excellent spreadsheet (I really REALLY must get to grips with how to do spreadsheets) illustrating the automatic promotion / play-off scenarios as they unfold. What is reproduced here is the situation as it was after last Saturday's results. United have dropped below Bracknell in the PPG mini-league (shown above in the chart) as I call it - we were top till the

Cray game and remain 2nd after Tuesday’s result with a PPG of 2.455. Peter's fine work illustrates nicely how the playoff shambles 'works'. Check it out. That PPG minileague is only of interest to clubs in play-off places. You'll find @petermiller36 on Twitter should you wish to follow him.

500 It seems not too long ago that 400 appearances for our Sam Adams were being rightly applauded by the Pilot Field faithful. And in no time at all here he is hitting 500 as a vital part of the team. Nice one Sam. Well done fella and now the trek to 600 commences.

TODAY’S VISITORS

The first recorded football match took place in the town during October 1885 when, under the name “Whitstable United”, a team played Whitstable College. Earliest use of the name “Whitstable Town” can be traced to the following season (1886-87) when matches were played were played on a Friday at “Mr. Saddleton’s field” – an area of ground near the railway station. The use of the club’s current Belmont ground began in January 1888 with a friendly game against Herne Bay. There was a change in name briefly to “Whitstable Swifts” in 1893 but reverted to “Whitstable Town” just two years later. Whitstable Town played their first competitive game in 1897 – a Kent Junior Cup match that resulted in a 7-1 defeat by Dover Star FC. Shortly after this, the club joined the “East Kent League” and later played in both the “New Brompton” and “Faversham & District” Leagues. The club folded in 1904 only to be reformed in 1908. In 1908-09 Whitstable Town joined the Kent League Division 2 and achieved a respectable fourth place in their first season. Two teams were also entered in the Thanet League and they were both successful in lifting both the first and second division titles. The first FA Cup campaign came in 1910. A 3-2 victory over Folkestone preceded a defeat by Dartford in front of a crowd of estimated at 2,150. Following the First World War, Town rejoined the Kent League and remained in the competition until the outbreak of World War II. The club won the Division 2 title in 192728 and 1933-34. However, the key success came in 1928-29 when the team lifted the Kent Amateur Cup (now superseded by the Kent Senior Trophy). After one season in the New Brompton League following the Second World War, Whitstable returned to Kent League in 1947-48 (also playing in the K Division of the New Brompton League.) Success came to the club as they won the Division 2 title in the 1949-50 season and gained promotion to the First Division until the League disbanded in 1959. These were sometimes considered the glory years as Whitstable temporarily became a professional club but the problems of competing with much wealthier clubs proved difficult and put considerable pressure on the clubs finances. The loss of the Kent League came as a hammer blow. Wealthier clubs moved onward and upward to the

20

HISTORY

more prestigious Southern League leaving behind a small band of teams fighting for survival. Town joined the Aetolian League briefly. Gone were the days of the money-spinning East Kent derby games against the likes of Folkestone, Dover, Sittingbourne and Margate. Matches against far off London-based sides were no substitute and, inevitably, the 1960’s became a period of financial problems and decay. The end of the 1959-60 season saw Whitstable bottom of the Aetolian League and a decision was taken to drop into the Kent Amateur League for a short period – an all time low for a senior side with such a rich history – We were champions in 1960-61 and were as runners up in the Kent Amateur Cup.. At the end of the 196162 season a decision was taken to enter the Seanglian League for the following season but this was a disaster as Whitstable mixed with the second string of a number of larger local clubs. The club then had one season back in the Aetolian League before joining the Greater London League. One piece of success was that the Town finished runners up in the Greater London League Group B Cup in 1965-66 losing the final 3-1 against Crittall Athletic in the final staged at Cray Wanderers FC. The Kent League was reformed in 1967 and Town rejoined immediately. However, this was not the Kent League of the “heady” 1930s and 1950s. Populated by a large number of reserve sides from Southern League Clubs, there was little to appeal to supporters… but it was a start. Gradually, former Kent League clubs began to return. Some like Whitstable had wandered various leagues over the years. Others had encountered financial problems in the Southern League. At last, the League Management Committee was in a position to remove reserve sides from the competition and impose strict conditions governing grounds and facilities. East Kent derby matches became a reality once more – against Ramsgate, Canterbury City, Folkestone, Deal, Faversham Town, Chatham and, of course, our oldest and nearest rivals, Herne Bay. The club responded – building a club house and attempting to restore the Belmont to its former glory on limited funds. The “Town” celebrated its centenary in 1985-86 in a healthier state and the occasion was marked by games against Charlton Athletic and Crystal Palace. Both matches attracted large crowds to the Belmont. There were many developments that followed the appointment of Joe Brownett as chairman in the late 1980’s and sponsorship by D&J Tyres of Herne Bay. Since then, dressing rooms have been refurbished, the club house re-fitted, floodlights erected, a new snack bar created, committee rooms extended, the pitch levelled and a drainage system installed.

Success on the pitch had been elusive since the re-formation of the Kent League. Despite a regular “top 10” position, the best league finishes had been two “third place” spots. Cup competitions yielded greater success but there has been heartache as well…. “Runners up” in Kent League Cup twice and the Kent Senior Trophy on three occasions. The only major reward came in 1979-80 – a 4-3 victory over Chatham to lift the Kent League Cup at the Bull Ground at Sittingbourne. Trailing 2-0 and 3-1 in the final, the team recovered to score two late goals and an “extra time” winner. The club achieved it best FA Vase run during 1996-97. Despite being drawn away from home in virtually every round, Whitstable reached the last 16…just 3 matches from an appearance at Wembley in this nationwide competition. With everyone praying for a home draw, luck deserted us…North Ferriby United (near Hull) … away. A tight 1-0 defeat ended the dream on Humberside. A few years ago in March 1989, the club and one of its most popular players (Gerry Allan) received coverage in the national press following one of the quickest goals in football history – timed at just over 4 seconds. From the kick off, the ball was rolled forward and Gerry attempted to lob the ball over the goalkeeper from the half way line. A slight miscue caused the ball to drop short but it skidded on the damp surface and passed under the goalkeeper’s body. Everyone dived for the Guinness book of records but it seems that there have been slightly quicker strikes. Had Gerry made a clean connection, it might have been the fastest goal of all time! Towns longest serving chairman Joe Brownett stepped aside at the end of 2004-05 season when supporter Tony Rouse took over the chair. 2006-07 marked the best season in the club’s history. Under player manager Marc Seager’s leadership the team won the Kent League and the Kent Senior Trophy. A treble was just missed out on the last day of the season as we ended up as runners-up in the Kent League Cup. We also had a good run in the FA Cup ending with a narrow home defeat against Margate in front of 1,144 people. The championship brought about the long awaited promotion to the Ryman League. The first year in the Ryman League (2007-2008) started shakily but an excellent end to the season brought us into mid table and respectability with chairman Tony Rouse stepping aside and Joe Brownett taking the reins as chairman once again. After a difficult start to the second season it was a mirror image of the previous year as we found ourselves again in the lower reaches of mid table.

WHITSTABLE TOWN FC managerial changes with the side always providing a sprint finish to the season to ensure survival. Ex-referee Gary Johnson became chairman at the start of the 2012-13 season. Nicky Southall led the team to the last 32 of the FA Trophy in 2013-14, including memorable wins at Carshalton Athletic and Hendon before losing 2-1 to Ebbsfleet United in front of 742 supporters at the Belmont Ground. Jim and Danny Ward took over as the management team from Nicky Southall at the start of the 2014-15 season and produced the club’s best position in the league, finishing in eighth place. The Wards moved back to manage Ramsgate after just one year and the whole of the season 2015-16 was one of constant change with managers and players coming and going. Chairman Gary Johnson then stepped down and Joe Brownett once again was the safe pair of hands to settle the club down. Scott Porter was appointed manager in an attempt to avoid relegation, but despite some encouraging results it was not to be and the club dropped back to the Southern Counties East Football League. The club regained stability off the pitch and Joe and Scott continued in their respective roles and a 5thplace finish was achieved in 2016-17. The following season ended successfully with the team going on an incredible four month unbeaten run that brought two cup final wins, defeating Sheppey United in the Kent Senior Trophy and Tunbridge Wells in the SCEFL Challenge Cup. The main objective of promotion back into the Bostik (Isthmian) League was also achieved, as finishing runners-up to Sevenoaks Town was enough to restore Step 4 football to the Belmont. The club set up a football academy at the start of the 2017-18 season and in association with Whitstable Town Junior Football Club offers opportunities for young players up to the age of 18 to be a part of the future of the club.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS WITH WHITSTABLE TOWN FC

Meetings between the sides date back to when we were Hastings Town and playing at “The Firs” where we first met in a pre-1980/81 season game which we won 3-1. Eleven seasons later we went to the Belmont on Saturday, 27th July, 1991 for another pre-season match where a Danny Whyman goal secured us a 1-1 draw. Whitstable first played us here on Tuesday, 15th February, 1994 when they progressed in a Kent Midweek League Cup second round tie which they won 3-1, before a crowd of just 47 who saw Nick Hall net our goal. Almost a decade then elapsed until our next meeting as we visited them three times for pre-season matches in 2003 (won 2-1), 2004 (lost 0-4) and 2009 (drew 2-2).

We renewed acquaintances with the Oystermen in 2013/14 after their earlier promotion into the Ryman Isthmian League; when our record was as follows:Away Home

ON THIS DAY A look back at some of the matches played in past seasons on: Saturday, 17th November.

1945 A national football league did not return until the following season 1946/47, however, there was a demand for leisure entertainment and there were a number of memorable games played including Moscow Dynamo’s tour of Britain and this day they gave a master class at Ninian Park where they strolled to a 10-1 victory against a Cardiff City XI. One competition that had restarted was the F.A. Cup where after six seasons absence the competition proper was played according to a unique two legged format so as produce more games; this day it was first leg ties in the first round. At the Goldstone Brighton defeated Southern League side Romford 3-1 with goals from Jock Davie (2) and Frank Hindley.

We, then Hastings & St. Leonards, visited Winchmore Hill in Division One of the Southern Amateur League but lost 1-6, our consolation goal scored by Tony Thornton.

1973 Two days earlier the Government banned the use of floodlights as an energy saving measure in the National Fuel Crisis which saw regular power cuts and the three day working week. Accordingly, midweek games were to be played in the afternoon and all matches had to kick-off at a time to allow a finish in day light. Division One leaders Leeds United extended their advantage with a 3-0 victory over Coventry City and Burnley’s 0-2 defeat at Leicester City – a result with cost them three places – Newcastle United going second after beating Manchester United 3-2 while Liverpool went third with a 4-2 win against Ipswich Town and Everton went fourth with a 3-1 victory at Norwich City. With none of the top six sides in Division Two being unbeaten there was no change in the leadership Middlesbrough being five points clear after a 3-0 win over Cardiff City. In Division Three Brighton remained in the bottom third after being held 0-0 at home by Chesterfield.

We, then Hastings & St. Leonards, entertained Wick on The Firs in the first round of the Sussex Senior Cup and won 3-0 with goals from Keith Turk (2) and Steve Benton.

2001 Despite most of the leading sides being in action there were just eleven goals in six games, three of which were drawn, in the Barclaycard Premiership: Leaders Liverpool were held 1-1 at Blackburn Rovers while third placed Aston Villa were held in a goal less encounter with Middlesbrough at Villa Park. Immediately below them Manchester United made up ground with a 2-0 win over Leicester City and Arsenal lost ground with a 1-1 draw at Tottenham Hotspur where they thought they had won it with a late Pires’ goal only for Gus Poyet to score an equaliser for the home side four minutes into added time. In Nationwide Division One there was no change at the top as leaders Burnley won 1-0 at Coventry City and second placed Crystal Palace beat Crewe Alexandra 4-1. There were no third or fourth tier games as this was F.A. Cup first round day with those forty-eight sides being joined by thirty-two from the non-league ranks. At full time, twelve ties remained unresolved with several outstanding performances as Barrow drew 1-1 at Oldham Athletic and Whitby Town had a similar score at home to Plymouth Argyle. At the Withdean Brighton progressed knocking out Shrewsbury Town 1-0 with a bobby Zamora goal. The following day Lewes lost 0-2 at home to Stoke City.

We, then still Hastings Town, entertained Rothwell Town in the Eastern Division of the Southern League when we won 3-0, before a crowd of 339, with goals from Chris Honey, Stuart Playford and Danny Simmonds.
