WELCOME Good afternoon all. Welcome to the Pilot Field for this afternoon’s Bostik League Division One South East match against East Grinstead Town FC. We extend a warm welcome to the officials, players and supporters of our West Sussex visitors. We hope they have an enjoyable afternoon, and wish them a safe return trip, hopefully without any points from our contest. A similar warm welcome is extended to the three match officials, Referee Alexander Emery and his two Assistants, David Ellis and Paul Hitchcott. We return to Pilot Field action this afternoon after a couple of disappointing away results and news that we are 3 points lighter as a consequence of the Isthmian Bostik League removing all record of Thamesmead Town’s 7 results. Unfortunately we also lose a healthy 4-goal difference. Undefeated in 14 league matches, table-toppers Cray Wanderers, were untouched by this action and are now 10 points clear, having played one more fixture than United. Lewes went down to the only goal of the game in their recent Sussex Senior Cup 2nd Round encounter against Brighton & Hove Albion U23 Development Team. We will now face the young Premiership prospects at the Pilot Field on Tuesday, December 11, with a 7.45pm kick-off. Today’s visitors currently sit in 15th position in the league having played 13 matches, the same number as United, but have yielded 50% fewer points at just 14. A full listing of Easy Grinstead Town’s results for this season to date can be found on the centre pages. The Wasps 1st Team setup includes ex-U’s Assistant Manager for a short period, Matt Longhurst, and versatile defender/midfielder, Callum Emptage, who featured over 20 times for the U’s in the Darren Hare 2016/17 season. Thank you for your support this afternoon ... I hope you enjoy the match ... Win it boys! ... We need to close that gap on Cray ... COYU’s ...

GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart A light hearted and serious look at football (not necessarily just football) at all levels, those who play, those who administrate and those of us who follow our various teams in this vast, lop sided pyramid of the game. At all times, views expressed are mine.

OUCH A dodgy week or so, eh? A draw, a defeat, and the Thamesmead result expunged has effectively resulted in a net loss of 2 points with the U's unable to get any catch up on Cray who are now well clear. And they are doubtless on a big high with the recent news they have the go-ahead to build a home stadium at Flamingo Park after 45 years of er, well, wandering as per their name.

STEADY LEAK Well it is, isn't it? We keep conceding goals - clean sheets aren't as frequent as they surely should be. Three recent games, that all too frequent couple of goals let in each time. You can't expect to shrug that off by scoring three every time you let in a couple, hence a poor return from the Cray, Faversham and Whyteleafe games. I still cannot find a better example of a side getting it 100% right as you need to - than the superb Chris Kinnear team at Dover Athletic way back in 19921993. Won the Beazer Homes Premier, only scored 65 goals but it was at the other end where they really did the business - just 23 conceded of which seven were let in at home. A 40 game season - 20 home games, 7 goals conceded. Which negated the need to score hatfuls.

THAMESMEAD CONFIRMED So it's confirmed that Thamesmead are no longer with us and looking at a sad event from the U's angle, that's three points deducted and a minus 4 hit on our goal difference. The 'benefit' of a resulting game in hand was wiped out at Whyteleafe on Tuesday night and we are 10 points adrift. One can argue that Cray theoretically miss out on a couple of bankers not having played Thamesmead but losing those points still galls.

16

I'll be here for East Grinstead after 3 weeks of 32 degrees out in the Philippines. And my WW2 interest got a big hit with a 2nd visit to Corregidor.

... a tweet from Bostik North Dereham Town

Dr Martens Premier action away to Hinckley United 2002-2003. All that way to lose 3-2 after being two goals up.

PREMIER GREED The 20 top tier clubs have certainly showed themselves up by their joint decision to hand over £250k each to the retiring chief executive Richard Scudamore who had been scraping by on £2.5 million a year. The £5 million ‘cheerio kitty’ will doubtless ease his joining the retirement club - thus no need to cancel the satellite tv subscription.

Liverpool fans at Watford with plenty to say about Richard Scudamore's retirement package.

To offer an opposing view point - only four Premier League clubs are paying - or have committed to pay - the 'real living wage' to their employees. £10.20 ph in London, £8.75 ph outside which makes for an interesting comparison with Raheem Sterling who's just taken on a £300,000 a week deal with Manchester City. City are - by the way - not one of those four clubs who are doing the right thing. They are Chelsea, West Ham, Everton and Liverpool.

ADAM LOVATT Having ranted about top football's excesses, all the very best to our Adam as he heads north to Elland Road where Leeds United are taking a 5-day look at an outstanding example of bring on the young’uns. I am sure he's not the only one who's been attracting the scouts. Hate to lose any of our boys but equally keen to see them flourish at the top level. Go well, fella ...

TOO FAR ....... Hmmmm, apparently Greenwich Borough weren't too keen, recently, on having to come down here on a Tuesday night - citing distance as the reason. I bet the Borough eyebrows hit the ceiling when the FA Trophy draw gave them a several hundred mile trek to National South Truro City last weekend. All of a sudden the A21 doesn't look so bad eh!

TODAY’S VISITORS

HISTORY

Determined to regain their place in the Sussex County League, they were re-elected back in 1937 after winning the Mid Sussex League again and finished fifth in their first season. East Grinstead Town Football Club was formed on May 8, 1890 although it was another ten years before they played their first competitive matches as founder members of the Mid Sussex Football League. In those early days the club played in blue and white with the town's coat of arms on the breast pocket. It was some years before they adopted their current colours of amber and black and were nicknamed 'The Wasps,' both of which survive to this day. They won the Mid Sussex League in 1902 and their first major honour followed seven years later when they shared the Sussex Junior Cup with Arundel. In 1909 they were awarded senior status which they have held ever since apart from two seasons when they were relegated to the intermediate third division of the Sussex County League in 1989. In 1912 Grinstead reached the Sussex Senior Cup final for the only time in their history but lost 4-1 to St Leonards Amateurs in a ferocious snowstorm. The Wasps were original members of the Sussex County League when it was founded in 1920, but they struggled to make any impact and after finishing bottom in 1927 and replaced by Horsham, they were not re-elected. Rather than returning to the Mid Sussex League, they had four successful seasons in the Brighton League before stepping up to the Southern Amateur League. A fresh challenge reinvigorated the club and they won the Division Three title in 1932 with 15 victories out of 18. Three years later they played on the Test Match cricket ground at Trent Bridge in Nottingham when they defeated Nottinghamshire Amateurs 6-0 in the old FA Amateur Cup.

20

In those halcyon days either side of the Second World War, four-figure crowds were the norm at their old ground in West Street, East Grinstead, which they shared with the town's cricketers. The club's record attendance is 2,006 for an FA Amateur Cup tie against Lancing in November, 1947. Success eluded Grinstead until 1952 when they won the Baldwin Cup, the forerunner of the Sussex County League Cup. That team is reckoned by many to be the finest the club has ever produced. It was certainly the most entertaining - 42 games that season in league and cup produced 222 goals! Grinstead were third in 1955, but their fortunes began to decline along with crowd numbers after that. They left West Street in 1959 but it wasn't until 1967 that they finally moved to their current home at East Court after a protracted battle to get the ground, which was prone to waterlogging, fit for football. In the meantime they had a spell at King Georges Field in the town centre. The club again finished third in 1973 but that was as good as it got for another 30 years although Grinstead did reach their first cup final since 1952 when they lost 4-1 to Haywards Heath in the RUR Cup in 1974 despite taking the lead. During the 1980s the club regularly hosted Crystal Palace and Brighton in charity fixtures watched by crowds of over 2,000 spectators. Wasps found themselves in Division Two for the first time in 1979 and even had two seasons in Division Three before regaining senior status. They were promoted back to Division One in 1993, but lasted just two years.

EAST GRINSTEAD TOWN FC Bob Smith led Wasps back to Division One in 2003 and they also won their first trophy for 52 years, beating Three Bridges 4-0 in the final of the RUR Cup. Unfortunately, the club were relegated back to Division Two on the final day of the 2004-05 season and in October 2006 Smith, the longestserving manager in the club's history, was replaced by former player Steve Norris. In his second season Wasps romped to the Second Division title by a massive 18 points, losing just twice all season. Their winning run of 14 successive league games at the start of the season meant they became the last senior non-league team in the country to drop points. Since then the club has established itself in the top flight, most recently under former Brighton striker Simon Funnell and their progress on the field has been matched off it. Floodlights were installed in 1997 and a new drainage system laid in 2003 that has transformed the playing surface, which is now one of the best in Sussex.

Matt Longhurst (East Grinstead Town FC Manager) Matt Longhurst replaced Tony Beckingham as manager of East Grinstead Town in 2015. Matt reached three cup finals when in charge of Corinthian and then took Erith & Belvedere to the quarter-finals of the FA Vase.

In 2008 two new stands and a pitch perimeter barrier were erected and in 2014 with the GAC Stadium already meeting the requirements of the Ryman Football League after installing additional seating, the club began work on a new dressing room and hospitality complex, a new turnstile block and entrance and a resurfaced car park. Part of the 2014 funding included a £50,000 grant from FA Cup sponsors Budweiser, £100,000 from the Football Stadia Improvement Fund, £40,000 from Mid Sussex District Council and £35,000 from SITA Trust.

returned for a second spell having previously been in charge between February 2010 – October 2011. Tony managed to keep the club in the Ryman League for a second season despite finishing in 23rd place in the table, but left to join Hythe Town in September 2015. Matt Longhurst was appointed new manager in October 2015 and after a difficult start he led the club to a 20th place finish, their highest in senior football.

Funnell’s side finished the season in second place, their highest ever County League position, and in May 2014, the club were accepted into the Ryman League for the first time in our history. In October 2014, Simon left the club and was replaced by Tony Beckingham, who

Grinstead have since consolidated themselves at Isthmian League level and are looking to push on in the 2018-19 season after recruiting heavily on new players during the summer of 2018 as they enter the Bostik League South East Division.

ON THIS DAY A look back at some of the matches played in past seasons on: Saturday, 1st December.

1934

A 2-2 draw at Sheffield Wednesday saw Sunderland relinquish the leadership of Division One as Arsenal took over on goal average after a 7-0 win against Wolves at Highbury; the second match running in which Ted Drake scored four goals. The top two in Division Two both won with leaders Bolton Wanderers winning 3-2 at Norwich City and Brentford beat Manchester United 3-1. In Division 3 (South) there was no change in the leadership as Reading defeated Luton Town 1-0, however, Brighton missed the chance to go second playing out a goal less draw at Gillingham in the most tragic of circumstances as following a clash of heads between home forward Sim Raleigh and Seagulls’ defender Paul Mooney, the Gills player collapsed and later that day died in hospital from a brain haemorrhage – Mooney was so distressed by the accident that he retired from football.

We, then Hastings & St. Leonards, hosted the National Westminster Bank Sports Club side in the first round of the A.F.A. Senior Cup and an out 4-1 winners with goals from Farrell (2), Francis (Bill) and Milnes.

1979

There was no change at the top of Division One as leaders Manchester United won 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur while second placed Liverpool beat Middlesbrough 4-0 with two goals in each half. Third placed Crystal Palace were beaten 0-1 at Leeds United but Arsenal missed the opportunity to go above them when held 1-1 at fifth placed Nottingham Forest. Division Two leaders defeated Preston 2-0 with goals from Ian Britton and Mickey Droy but second placed Q.P.R. dropped three places after losing 1-2 at Cambridge United allowing Newcastle United, Luton Town and Leicester City to go above them with the Toon beating Fulham 2-0 whilst the other two both won 2-1 away at Shrewsbury Town and Birmingham City, respectively. Division Three leaders Sheffield United beat Plymouth 3-2 but below them Milwall and Colchester United exchanged places after the Essex side won 2-1 at the Den. Portsmouth took over the leadership of Division Four when they defeated Halifax 3-1 replacing Huddersfield Town who were beaten 0-1 at home by Hereford United.

We, then still Hastings Town, visited Wigmore Athletic (now Worthing United) in Division Two of the Sussex County League where we won 7-0 with goals from Chris Harris, Steve Rimmer and Steve Viney who each bagged a brace, the other being netted by Kevin Barry. There were also two goals for Ernie Batten as the original Hastings United defeated Margate 3-0 here in the third round of the F.A. Trophy.

2007

Unbeaten Arsenal continued their winning ways going five points clear at the top of the Barclaycard Premiership with a 2-1 victory at Aston Villa thanks to goals from Emmanuel Adebayor and Mathieu Flamini. Immediately below them Chelsea went above Manchester United following a 1-0 home win against West Ham United courtesy of a late Joe Cole goal. United retained third place on goal difference as Manchester City could only manage a 1-1 draw at Wigan Athletic. In the Coca Cola Championship leaders Watford were beaten 1-2 at home by fellow promotion challengers Bristol City, a result mitigated by second placed W.B.A. only drawing 1-1 at Crystal Palace. All but four of the twenty F.A. Cup second round ties went ahead with Brighton making it to the lucrative next round as a result of a 2-0 victory at Torquay United. Non-league side Havant & Waterlooville also made it through winning 1-0 at Notts. County; however, otherwise it was generally a bad day for the minnows with Staines Town being beaten 0-5 at home by Peterborough United and Rushden gong down 1-5 at Bristol Rovers.

We lost 0-1 to a first-half goal at Harrow Borough in the Premier Division of the Ryman Isthmian League - Attendance 132.
