WELCOME Good evening all. Welcome to the Pilot Field for tonight’s Sussex Senior Challenge Cup 3rd Round tie against Brighton & Hove Albion FC U23s. We extend a warm welcome to the officials, players and supporters of our fellow Sussex coast visitors. We hope they have an enjoyable evening, and wish them a safe return trip. A similar warm welcome is extended to the three match officials, Referee David Spain and his two Assistants, Alexander Bradley and Will Briers. We return to Pilot Field action this evening after some disappointing results including Saturday’s 2-1 away defeat at Haywards Heath Town FC.

The Sussex Senior Challenge Cup is the longest running cup competition in the county having first been played for in the 1882/83 season, shortly after the founding of the Sussex County FA.

Brighton & Hove Albion’s under-23s sealed their place in the third round of the Sussex Senior Challenge Cup after Josh Kerr’s 90th-minute strike gave them a 1-0 victory over high-flying Bostik Premier League, Lewes FC, at The Dripping Pan. Stefan Ljubicic struck the woodwork for the Seagulls in the first-half but it was left to a last minute finish from Kerr, who showed excellent composure to pick out the bottom corner of the goal from Alex Cochrane’s perfectly-weighted pass. I’m sure Albion’s under-23s coach, Simon Rusk, will be keen to push for progress in a competition they have won back-to-back in the last two seasons and will be fielding a strong and challenging line-up. Thank you for your support this evening ... I hope you enjoy this cup match ... Win it boys! ... COYU’s ... Paul Paul Hoggard Programme Production Editor

MANAGER’S NOTES Good evening everyone. Firstly, looking back to what has been a difficult couple of weeks ..... we have made mistakes and been punished, conceding 2 goals from three shots against Faversham, 3 goals from 4 shots against East Grinstead and 2 goals from 3 shots against Haywards Heath - credit to our opponents they have been ruthless. Also on the Haywards Heath game I need to hold my hands up - I thought we were punch perfect for an hour until Haywards Heath made a tactical switch which I didn’t react to quick enough ...... this I really do believe cost us the points - I must do better and will learn from this mistake -100% .... the players have been fantastic and I let them down on the day!

Chris Agutter

... BHAFC gave me my first taste of professional football and for that experience I’m eternally grateful! ...

However, the fact we still sit 2nd placed and in a position to challenge indicates what an outstanding start we have made to the season. What we now must do is look forwards and build on this start something that myself, the staff and players are determined to do! On behalf of all at HUFC we look forward to welcoming Brighton & Hove Albion to the Pilot Field ..... it’s a privilege to welcome a club of such stature to Hastings United and we look forward to testing ourselves against Premier League quality opposition. Also on a personal note Brighton & Hove Albion is a club close to my heart, and I have some very good friends still at the club whom I’ve shared some great memories - BHAFC gave me my first taste of professional football and for that experience I’m eternally grateful! I hope everyone enjoys a rare ‘pressure free’ night at the Pilot Field!

GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart A light hearted and serious look at football (not necessarily just football) at all levels, those who play, those who administrate and those of us who follow our various teams in this vast, lop sided pyramid of the game. At all times, views expressed are mine.

DISTRACTION That is exactly what this evening's game is, given our current derailment from the track, we were going so well on until recently. The track out of Bostik SE which we have been making inconsistent forays on this last two or three seasons. No disrespect to Brighton is intended, none whatsoever. We had a couple of great Sussex Senior Cup games with Albion way back – a three game marathon in the promotion season of 1991-1992 and the final at the end of the 1999-2000 season. The 2-2 draw here after a 0-0 draw at The Goldstone in 91-92 was a memorable game – 639 spectators treated to a great advert for Sussex football. Hastings Town's goals that evening were scored by Sticky Willard and the late great Smudger Smith. Town gave a good account of themselves against Football League opposition in the 2nd replay before going down 2-3 with our goals scored by Phil Henderson and Dean Kewley. That was a cup fest sequence of games – of 7 matches, 5 were cup competitions. The 0-0 draw at Brighton, a 3-3 FA Vase draw at Wimborne, the 1-2 replay defeat when a Mr Vosper (gag, cough, splutter) featured rather too prominently as Town went out with 9 men to the eventual winners - and 2 more Sussex Senior Cup against Albion. The final at the end of the 1999-2000 campaign. Played at Priory Lane in Eastbourne against a strong Albion side then managed by Micky Adams. It finished 1-1 with Albion winning on penalties. Town were outstanding that afternoon and that was acknowledged by Micky Adams bringing the winners bottles of champagne to the Town dressing room afterwards. A great sporting gesture. 1999-2000 was a season of two cup finals, sadly neither saw Town lifting trophies with the other reversal being

South Shields are making a decent fist of their first season in Evo-Stik Premier and this tweet shows them all up in a good light. Have a look for it and enjoy the video - well worth it. And take your hats off to South Shields FC.

the Southern League's Cup Final against Burton Albion which we lost 2-6 over two legs against Premier Division Albion who went onto promotion up to the Conference. We went up for that second leg 2-1 down – all the way to deepest Staffordshire - after a slightly unfortunate defeat here – a 420 mile round trip on a Tuesday evening with a decent Town following trekking all that way. The numbers didn't lie, 6-2 over two legs was about right but we all enjoyed that evening at Eaton Park. Nigel Clough managed Burton in those days and the old man – one famous Brian Clough - was there for that game.

Found this in one of the old Ghost fanzines. Any of you remember the treks up to Corby Town in Northamptonshire all those years ago? ... Distraction this evening? Well, I think it is. Our league campaign has taken a big bashing this last two or three weeks with the latest reversal coming at Haywards Heath on Saturday. Whether you're after promotion or trying to avoid relegation – that W and the 3 point boost to your total is what you focus on and so - do we need cup competitions? It will be interesting to see how our boys do against the pros from along the Sussex coast, it's a different kind of pressure to the bread and butter football of Bostik SE – but speaking for myself, I would much rather be concentrating on that league. 99-00 was one of those seasons when we weren't quite the finished product. It was our first season back in the Eastern Division after seven Premier Division seasons had seen the Southern League rule book used to relegate us after an eventful 98-99. Not quite the finished product – hmmmm, much the same can be said right now?

FOG Given the result here against East Grinstead recently, maybe it was a shame that fog didn't come down Elphinstone Road a bit more than it did. Always has been a meteorological oddity in Hastings how you can have a pea souper up on The Ridge and nothing down here – yet last Saturday week looked that had there been a game scheduled up the Firs, it would quite likely have not gone ahead!

The Footballwebpages site is highly useful for keeping us up to date and I made full use of it - and Twitter on Saturday as, somewhat frustratingly given I was only a few miles away at Three Bridges, I followed United's progress at Haywards Heath. But on occasions, FWP can be a little sketchy as this summary of Taunton Town vs Harrow Borough shows ...... Let in seven and finished with eight, not a good day for Harrow Borough!

ON THIS DAY A look back at some of the matches played in past seasons on: Tuesday, 11th December.

2001 In Division One of the Nationwide League Manchester City moved up two places to second spot displacing opponents Wolves who went down one place, City’s win coming courtesy of a lone Kevin Hurlock goal midway through the first half. Sixth placed Crystal Palace also lost 0-1 at Birmingham City, the goal coming from the penalty spot being converted by Tommy Mooney. In the lower half of the Division Two table Wigan Athletic and Notts. County played out a 1-1 draw. There were hat tricks in both of the Football League Cup Quarter Final ties played this evening with Les Ferdinand netting three times for Tottenham Hotspur who beat Bolton Wanderers 6-0 while Matt Jensen struck three times for Blackburn Rovers in their 4-0 home win against Arsenal.

We, then Hastings Town, defeated Folkestone Invicta 5-0 here in the second round of the Dr. Martens Southern League Cup, Chris Honey and Simon Yares bagging a brace apiece.

2007 Although Chelsea were held to a goal less draw at home to Spanish side Valencia, they finished their group stage of the UEFA Champions League top and unbeaten. Oddly despite winning 4-0 away to Marseille, Liverpool only finished as runners-up in their group, the Reds’ goals coming from Ryan Babel, Steven Gerrard, Dirk Kiuyt and Fernando Torres. In the Coca Cola Championship Burnley missed the chance to go fourth after being beaten 0-2 at home to second bottom Q.P.R. Elsewhere a single goal was enough to Cardiff City to win at Blackpool while Ipswich Town beat Leicester City 3-1. There were five F.A. Cup second round replays and all resulted in home wins with four being 1-0 victories, the exception was Southend United’s 3-0 defeat of Oxford United. In the other ties Barnet beat Burton Albion, Chasetown defeated Port Vale, Luton Town knocked out Nottingham Forest and Walsall accounted for Northampton Town.

We had no midweek match having defeated Heybridge Swifts 1-0 here in the Premier Division One (South) of the Ryman Isthmian League the previously Saturday and ahead of another league game at Maidstone United.

2012 There was just one Barclays Premiership fixture which saw Sunderland move up three places to fifteenth after beating second bottom Reading 3-0. In the Quarter-Finals of the Football League’s Capital One Cup Bradford City held Arsenal 1-1 with a goal from Gary Thompson; Thomas Vermardere netting for the Gunners. Extra time failed to produce further goals, Bradford going on to win 3-2 on penalties. The other tie played that evening was more straight forward with Andreas Weimann scoring twice as Aston Villa won 4-1 at Norwich City. There were also two F.A. Cup second round replays and both ended 1-1 in normal time: Cheltenham Town scoring again in extra time to win at Hereford United while Southend United and Bury were goal less in the extra half an hour, the Shrimpers winning 3-2 on penalties.

We did not play until Thursday when our F.A. Cup second round replay with Harrogate Town took place here before a crowd of 4028 who saw us draw 1-1, after extra time, courtesy of a Lee Carey penalty and then go on to win 5-4 on penalties.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS HISTORY

Although formed within months of each other, the two clubs have never met in league action as it was always intended that the Albion should be a professional club and have only played in the Southern and the Football Leagues. Nevertheless, we have been drawn together in competition ties on ten previous occasions – nine times in the Sussex Senior Cup - and have played a number of friendly matches: The first recorded encounter taking place on Saturday, 13th December, 1924 when, despite also having a home Division 3 (South) fixture against Swansea Town, Albion sent a side containing eight first team players to meet Hastings & St. Leonards in the semi-final of the Hastings Charity Cup. The Seagulls romped to a 9-1 victory with goals from Bob Dennison (3), Ted Green (2), Fred Hoyland (2), Jack Smith and Reg Wilkinson, our lone reply coming from Ernie Philcox; the match attracting a crowd of 1,828 with £32.43 being raised for distribution between the two local hospitals after both clubs declined expenses and their share of the gate. The next competitive meeting took place under unusual circumstances when Brighton Secretary Albert Underwood forgot to seek exemption from the qualifying rounds of the F.A. Challenge Cup so that on Saturday, 29th October, 1932 it was the full Albion first team that arrived for a third qualifying round tie in which they romped to a 9-0 victory thanks to a Bobby Farrell hat-trick and a brace apiece from Arthur Attwood, Tommy Smith and Alf Thompson in a tie which attracted a crowd of 7,723. Although several war-time friendly matches were played between the clubs, the next competitive fixture was during season 1945/46 when, due to the continuing war in the Far East, the Football League was again run on an improvised basis with Albion fielding a side described as “the Juniors” in the emergency Sussex County League and the Sussex Senior Cup. Thereafter, as a professional club Brighton were not invited to participate in the Sussex Senior Cup again until 1975, when the distinction between amateur and professional status was abolished, and by the time of our next meeting we had become Hastings Town and were playing on The Firs, however, the upper pitch was not fit to accommodate the

42

second round meeting in the Senior Cup on Saturday, 12th January, 1980 and the match was transfer here to the Pilot Field where Brighton won 2-0. When we next met, again at the same stage of the competition on Saturday, 29th October, 1983 the tie was played on The Firs but with no better result for us as the Albion won 3-1 with England Youth International Martin Lambert hitting a hat-trick, Derrick Smith registering our late lone reply. By season 1986/87 we had moved back to the Pilot Field, however, when we were drawn together at the Quarter-Final stage it was at the Goldstone when we drew 1-1 but a week later a crowd of 656 saw another 1-1 draw, Malcolm Streeter scoring our goal and Welsh International Dean Saunders netting for the Albion; however, extra-time saw Brighton go on to win 4-1 with another goal from Saunders and a brace from David Gipp. Five years later at the third round stage we managed a goal less draw at the Goldstone and a second draw here when we drew 2-2 after extra time. Eight days later Brighton shaded the second replay winning in extra time by the odd goal of five, Phil Henderson and Dean Kewley scored for us while the Brighton marksmen were Mark Barham, Mark Gall and Jamie Williams. During the rest of that decade Brighton came here on four occasions for friendly matches, however, on Bank Holiday Monday, 1st May, 2000 this time in the Final of the Sussex Senior Cup at Eastbourne Borough’s ground where a crowd of 1,355 shall us draw 1-1, Matt Ball scoring first for us with Kevin Hemsley getting a late equaliser; extra time produced no more goals and Albion went onto lift the trophy after winning the penalty shoot-out 4-3. On Tuesday, 19th November, 2002 our away Sussex Senior Cup second round tie was played at Woodside Road, Worthing where Cameroon trialist Roger Pandong score the only goal for the Albion. Our last competitive meeting took place at The Saffrons, Eastbourne on Thursday, 15th April, 2010 when before a crowd of just 253, playing less than two days before an important league fixture that could have gained us a promotion play-off place, we fielded a weakened side and Brighton beat us 5-0 at the semi-final stage of the Sussex Senior Cup with goals from Dean Cox (2), George Barker, Connor Hider and Connor Wilkins. Since then we have played three pre-season friendly matches here, winning 3-2 in July 2012, but losing the following season 0-2 and 0-3 in July 2016.
