On a personal note I would like to thank my fellow directors for their support and our commercial team for their efforts in seeking to expand our commercial activities. Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of VCD Athletic FC who currently lie 9th in the league having accrued 22 points from 14 matches. We hope they enjoy their short visit to the Pilot Field and have a safe journey back to Crayford. After a great first quarter of the season there is no disguising the fact we have had a very barren run of late. Most of the recent games have seen us positively create some great goal scoring opportunities without being able to take them on a regular basis and then to compound this we have conceded some softish goals. We have also had some bad luck and suspensions plus injuries have bitten but these are just things all clubs suffer during the course of a season. I know Chris, his staff and the players are working hard to get us back on track sooner rather than later. The game against Brighton & Hove Albion U/23s in the Sussex Senior Cup last Tuesday evening did not go the way we wanted. We started pretty well but could not quite force a goal. Our visitors then scored from a corner and despite some neat and tidy play from us in both halves of the game we could not penetrate and a young and impressive Brighton side punished us with 3 further goals in the final quarter of the match.

relocation plans. Having said this we are very frustrated at the amount of time it is taking to take us forward which has been out of our control. All we can do is keep pressurising the parties we have to wait on to get on with things. I know some of our supporters have asked me why we need to relocate. I have given the reasons on several occasions but they are worth repeating again. The Pilot Field main stand requires considerable maintenance work valued at some £100K minimum which the Club cannot afford. Eventually without the maintenance work being undertaken the Club will not get its annual safety certificate renewed which would mean the Club would not be able to achieve FA grading and thus could not compete in a semi-professional league or potentially even in the Southern Combination Football League. To develop the Pilot Field overall £3M plus would be required so that is a nonstarter. We also very much need access to more pitches than just the Pilot Field pitch such pitches preferably being on one site with our stadium so that we have training facilities and can develop further our academy and introduce such as women’s and girls, disability and walking football. We strongly believe that a new football stadium with an additional artificial pitch or pitches plus income generating facilities will not only be of benefit to our Club but also to the community as a whole. We intend to press on with our relocation plans providing we can eventually agree Heads of Terms with the local authority. If we can’t then like the position with BREXIT we will have some uncertainty to overcome. Many thanks for your continued support. We’ve been on an indifferent run ..... results have gone against us for the first time this season - now we really need everyone at HUFC to get behind us ..... we need love and a bit of TLC to help get us through this patch ....

... it’s a long season with plenty of points still up for grabs ...

HOWEVER .... despite our mixed form we still sit second, we still continue to play an exciting brand of football ...... and we still stay on course to challenge for this title!! Rest assured the staff and players are working harder than ever to win the next game - and today against VCD Athletic is no different ...... it’ll be tough for sure as VCD are organised, well drilled and athletic (no pun intended) ..... any team managed by Keith McMahon will pose a tough test, which was more than proven in our hard fought 3-2 win against VCD earlier on in the season! As always I look forward to hearing the superb HUFC support getting behind the lads as we aim to bridge the gap to Cray - it’s a long season with plenty of points still up for grabs ..... and we will be aiming to add three more to our total today!

BREAD AND BUTTER FOOTBALL Cup distractions are no more and we can all concentrate on what really matters – getting that promotion campaign up and running and seeing an end to a pretty grim sequence of results. The more important results Tuesday evening were Hythe losing at home to Greenwich Borough and Three Bridges seeing off Horsham who have been on a great run. Didn't see either of those coming!.

RED CARD FARCE Daniel Ajakaiye was apologetic on Twitter for his red card in the recent home defeat by East Grinstead while Chris Agutter was remarkably restrained in his post match interview re what went on that afternoon a couple of weeks ago. Hmmm. Well, that game was certainly one that will not fade quickly from the memories of those who were there. Daniel was guilty – if that's the right word – of reacting to outrageous provocation from the East Grinstead 6 if what I read on the United fan's forum later was anything to go by. I have to say I didn't see what happened – but have no reason to doubt what people who did see it all, had to say. The outcome of some appalling play acting is that we lost Daniel for three games as the rule book interpreted his reaction as violent behaviour. Whether the same rule

book contains anything about the provocation towards Daniel from the EG 6, I don't know. But you can be sure his behaviour will go totally unpunished. Without a doubt, one of those days. Can't wait to get Daniel back and I am happy to say he has nothing to apologise for as far as I am concerned.

DERAILED Well, we have indeed come off the rails in the last month or so. That tendency to regularly ship goals – like two every game it seems – has started to haunt us as the initial ability to keep scoring three every game has gone into the history book. Saturday's defeat at Haywards Heath saw us just hanging onto second spot and frustratingly unable to take any advantage of Cray only drawing and Hythe losing to a vastly improved Horsham. The East Grinstead and Haywards Heath games should really have yielded four points minimum but that was a fat zero with other defeats at Cray and Whyteleafe plus the loss of the Thamesmead points leaving us reeling. Things need to start improving as of this afternoon. The run we've been on of late is so reminiscent of previous seasons when we knew we had the team to do the business but couldn't quite get the necessary ingredients together. It all takes time, two or three seasons.

SEEN IT ALL BEFORE We've seen it here. New owner flashing the cash with all the big ideas, Football League in five years etc etc. Has it really been 20 years? Yes it has and still it happens. The latest outfit to part company with an ambitious owner is National South Billericay who have now started parting company with players from their expensively assembled squad. Other clubs in recent years who have had fleeting ambitions dashed are Whitehawk and Peacehaven. And no doubt there will be others.

More depressing reading - but baffling with it. Paul Hoggard, your programme editor, has put together these numbers that show how badly we have done against other promotion candidates so far this season. Baffling in that we saw United play outstandingly well in their three FA Cup games against higher league opponents. We should have been out of sight at Hitchin after dominating the opening 20 minutes. Doesn't make a lot of sense!

The points per game mini-league updated prior to last weekend's results by Peter Miller, a Ware Town FC follower. United's recent poor results have seen us slip well down the PPG mini-league. We were second the first time I included this excellent piece of work by Peter. TAKING STICK Working with 60 odd blokes and a few girls – signalling on the railway is still very male orientated – inevitably leads to lots of football related banter. And I certainly got put through the mangle a week ago when my reactions changed through the Saturday afternoon as United's lead at Haywards Heath was turned into defeat. Later in the week the conversation turned to other “Non League” (Their term, not mine) clubs and what standards they played at compared to Hastings United – a long list of clubs followed - “Hey Stoddy, do you play Dover?” Then it was Eastbourne Borough, Merstham, Leatherhead, Tonbridge, Bognor Regis to name half a dozen – and every club mentioned saw me having to confess they played in higher leagues than the U's. It turned into a question and answer session on this theme and I had to wait some time before slightly redressing the balance when someone asked if we were in the same league as Battle .......

TODAYâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S VISITORS VCD Athletic FC is one of only a few clubs to have originated during the Great War when, in 1916 it was formed by workers employed at the Vickers armaments factory in Crayford. The Company originally played only inter-departmental games until it was decided that the best players from the various sections would be elected to represent the firm. The club have played at the firm's sports ground, Oakwood, in Old Road, Crayford, from the outset right up to the present time, except for eight seasons spent ground sharing whilst trying to get permission for the erection of floodlights. In the early days, only friendly matches were played as there were no official competitions during the war years, and records show that a club called Vickers (Erith) joined the re-formed Kent League in 1919, changing their name to Vickers (Crayford) a year later. In their first season in the Kent League they visited Maidstone United on Boxing Day and played in front of a crowd of 13,500. The Vickers team that day contained seven Arsenal players who were finishing off their war service. Two years later, Vickers joined the Dartford & District League, followed by entry into the newly formed Kent Amateur League, Division One in 1923. Their first trophies came in 1927, the Kent FA Junior Cup and the Kent Benevolent Cup. It was a further 25 years before more silverware came their way, when they won the Kent Division One title in 1953. The Kent Amateur Cup was won in 1962 and in 1964 but the following season saw a spectacular slump and relegation, with a record of P24 W0 D2 L22, goals for 25, goals against 199. Promotion was gained in 1969, but after a mediocre period during the 1970s, they were relegated in 1980 back to Division Two. A season later they were promoted back to Division One and in 1985 won the championship, gaining promotion to the restructured Premier Division. By now the Kent Amateur League had changed its name to the Kent County League and the club enjoyed further success when they won the Kent FA Intermediate Shield in 1988. In the same year the club was involved in the last ever match played at Maidstone United's London Road ground when they won the West Kent Challenge Cup. In 1993, Martin

Ford joined the club as manager and, in season 1995/1996 a unique cup treble was achieved with wins in the Kent Intermediate Shield, Kent County League Cup, and the Erith Hospitals Cup. Season 1996/1997 then saw the club win the Kent County Premier Division title for the first time in their history, and by a record 15 points. Senior status was awarded that same year and a successful application was made to join the Winstonlead Kent League where, in their first season in modern times, VCD Athletic finished in a creditable ninth place. The following season saw the club begin a ground-share with Thamesmead Town, finishing up in seventh place but also reaching the final of the Kent League Cup, where they lost 1-0 to Deal Town in a closely fought match. Deal at this time were assembling the side that was later to win the FA Vase at Wembley. A season later the club went one better, beating Faversham Town 4-0 in the final to bring the club a first ever senior trophy, and the season after that the club made its third consecutive cup final appearance when they reached the final of the Kent Senior Trophy. However, they narrowly missed out on more silverware when they went down 10-9 on penalties to Whitstable Town. The club eventually spent five seasons as tenants of Thamesmead Town before Lordswood FC kindly took their place for two seasons. Then the club embarked on a one year term with near neighbours Greenwich Borough, and despite the handicap of having to ground-share, VCD were consistently one of the league's strongest members during their time in the league. The club reached the final of the League Cup in 2002/2003, but on the day there was no celebration as VCD were comfortably beaten 2-0 by Cray Wanderers. The following season was a disappointment as far as the cups were concerned, but a creditable third place was achieved in the league. Further cup success followed however when, in season 2005/2006 the club reached the final of the Kent Senior Trophy for the second time. Having suffered a loss in the first final on penalties, there was a reversal of fortune this time when, after having drawn 1-1 with Tunbridge Wells at the end of extra time, the VCD players held their nerve to win the penalty shoot-out 3-1.

VCD ATHLETIC FC During 2005 the long awaited news the club wanted to hear finally arrived when planning permission for floodlights and the development of the Oakwood ground was granted by Bexley Council. This, together with a substantial grant from the Football Stadia Improvement Fund, part of the Football Foundation, enabled work to commence early in 2006. The pitch was levelled, rotated 90 degrees and re-laid. New perimeter paths were laid, along with perimeter fencing to enclose the pitch. Floodlights were erected in June 2006, at the same time that work on enhancing the changing rooms also began. The spectator stand was re-sited and extended, and further additions included a new raised hospitality area situated to overlook the pitch, and a new tea bar adjacent to the popular members bar. At the end of the 2007 season Martin Ford resigned as manager, and the club are grateful for his vision and enthusiasm over the years that took VCD from being a Kent County League side to one that was always around the top of the table in the Kent League, and on his departure the club had just reached the last 16 of the prestigious FA Vase for the second consecutive season. Head coach Dean Frost took over as caretaker manager, and under his guidance the club obtained runners up spot in the league, narrowly missing out to Whitstable Town, and then the following season Paul Foley was appointed manager of the first team, with Dean Frost reverting to his former position of head coach. Under their stewardship the club finished runners up once more. A year later, the club finally won the Kent League Premier Division title together with the Kent Senior Trophy, culminating in the long awaited promotion to the Ryman Football League. The first season was a success with an 8th place finish, but the club were left stunned when the Ryman League deemed ground issues warranted demotion, and despite an appeal to the Football Association, the decision was upheld and the club went back to the Kent League. Manager Paul Foley resigned to join Chatham Town, taking virtually the whole team with him, and the club appointed former reserve team manager Ricky Bennett his replacement. Under his leadership VCD achieved third place in his first season, and the season after the team was also challenging for honours and, but for a disappointing end to the campaign we certainly would have given Herne Bay a closer run to their title. Once again third place was attained but this time we had the added bonus of winning the Kent League Cup, beating Corinthian 2-0 in the final. We also lifted a second trophy with a 3-2

victory over league champions Herne Bay in the Kent League Challenge Shield which gave the club a pre-season boost. Midway through season 2012/2013 Ricky Bennett left the club due to outside pressures, and in his place the club secured the services of Tony Russell, previously manager of Erith Town FC, who joined with his assistant Ray Powell. With most of the players leaving with the previous manager the club was in disarray, but a side was quickly formed by the new management, and a magnificent record breaking run of 17 victories and 2 draws in the last 19 league fixtures enabled the club to once more gain promotion to the Ryman Football League Division 1 North. Starting as favourites for relegation, the club had a stunning run, winning the first15 games and heading the table for all but a couple of weeks throughout the campaign, and on the last day of the season, sitting in 2nd place the Vickers defeated Romford FC 6-0 while leaders Witham Town could only draw their last game which saw us secure the title by a point, taking the club to the Premier Division, its highest ever level in the pyramid. The club struggled for a lot of the season, spending most of the time in the relegation places but winning the last 6 games saw us climb to safety, finally finishing in 18th position to maintain our place in the division. Manager Tony Russell immediately resigned, joining Cray Wanderers FC in Division 1, taking his entire side with him but the club acted quickly to secure the services of Keith McMahon as new First Team Manager. Keith came with a wealth of experience having taken neighbours Thamesmead Town from the Kent League to the Ryman League Premier Division but, with no players at the club and only a few weeks to the start of the 2015/2016 season Keith was up against it from the beginning in trying to assemble a side to compete at the higher level. He worked tirelessly and brought in some excellent players, but despite some good performances we were unable to find the consistency needed in the Premier Division and were relegated back to Division 1 (North). Inconsistency during the following two seasons, albeit with some impressive wins against higher opposition in cup competitions saw us finish just below midtable, and following a recent reconstruction of the league we have now been placed in the Bostik Football League South East Division. With a number of new signing for 2018/19 we are looking to make a sustained challenge in the new league set-up.

Joe Mant Goalkeeper

Keith McMahon Manager A serious injury at the age of 24 cut short a playing career with Fisher Athletic, Danson Furness and Welling United, leading to a Managing/Coaching position with VCD Athleticâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s U/18 and Reserve sides in 1997. This lasted for six years until in 2003 the Managerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s role at Thamesmead Town FC was secured. A successful spell there resulted in promotions from the Kent League to Ryman League Division 1 North and then on to the Ryman League Premier Division, before returning to Oakwood as 1st Team Manager in 2015. Danny Lee Assistant Manager Has vast experience in coaching, now in his 24th year in the role and has brought a new dimension to the club from which we should benefit. Popular with the players, he has also had experience with Barkingside, Harlow, Collier Row and also had a spell at Southend United.

Joined the club at the start of last season from Hythe Town and has had a number of impressive performances in his time here. Talks well, commands his area and impresses with his kicking. Also a good shot stopper, making many excellent saves, and being especially adept against spot kicks.

Regan Wiley Defender A young defender who joined the Vickers at the beginning of this season after impressing in the preseason friendly matches. Reads the game well, is defensively sound, and has an abundance of pace which makes him difficult to play against. Plays in the left side of defence but likes to get forward quickly to offer support in attack, and will look to cement a place in the side this term. Previously with Croydon FC. Bradley Simms Defender Re-joined the Vickers this season having earlier been a member of our Under 18 side. A skilful defender with pace and good technical ability who will be a valuable addition to our squad. Whilst being sound in defence, likes to get forward where his pace is a threat. Previous experience with Erith Town and Whyteleafe.

First Team Coach Following a playing career with Stansted, Waltham Forest and Enfield, began coaching over 10 years ago. Vastly experienced and has made his mark on the fitness levels of the squad, which will be beneficial as the season wears on. Previous experience with Barkingside where he was also Assistant Manager, and Harlow Town from where he joined the Vickers.

Goalkeeping Coach Played for Brent FC before joining Wimbledon FC as Academy Goalkeeping Coach, where he spent 10 years before going into management at Greenwich Borough and Slade Green. Went back to coaching goalkeepers in 2002 upon joining Thamesmead Town before coming VCD Athletic in 2015. Brings a wealth of experience to the club.

Ricardo Joseph Defender Comfortable at either centre back or full back where he is equally effective. Technically good on the ball, has previous experience with Met Police, Rushden & Diamonds and Margate.

Jude Adebayo Defender Signed for the club at the beginning of this season and had a promising pre-season. Still young but has pace and strength, impressing at left back. As he gains experience will be looking for a regular place in the side, but is a valuable addition to the squad and should do well in the future.

Jake McIntyre Defender Kieran Quarrington Physio Joined the club at the beginning of this season following graduation from York St John University, where he achieved a BSC (Hons) in Sports Science and Injury Rehabilitation. This is his first appointment with a football club, where he brings a professional attitude to the task of minimising the time players are unavailable through injury.

Signed this season from neighbours Thamesmead Town and looks to be a great addition to the squad. An imposing, commanding defender who is strong in the tackle and good in the air. Has pace and reads the game well with good positional sense. Brings an extra dimension to the defence and will be looking to establish a regular place in the side.

ON THIS DAY A look back at some of the matches played in past seasons on: Saturday, 15th December.

1956 Division One leaders Manchester United went down 1-3 at Birmingham City who moved up to fifth, Eddy Brown (2) and Bryan Orritt netted for City while Billy Whelan scored for United. Second placed Blackpool kept the pressure on with a 4-2 home win over Bolton Wanderers to go above Leeds United who lost 1-2 at Everton, Jimmy Gould netting twice for the home side. There was no change at the top of Division Two with leaders Leicester City winning 2-0 at Doncaster Rovers while Stoke City defeated Middlesbrough 3-1. In mid-table Liverpool won 3-0 at Huddersfield Town all their goals scored by Chichester born Alan Arnell. It was a bad as the top two in Division Three (South) lost, Southampton losing 0-1 at Bournemouth and Torquay United being thrashed 0-6 at Ipswich Town. Shrewsbury Town beat Brighton 4-0 to go into fourth.

We, then Hastings & St. Leonards, travellled to Seaford where we won 7-1 in Division Two of the Sussex County League. The original Hastings United were at home to Guildford City in the then single division Southern League but lost 1-2.

1973 Leeds United opened up a seven point gap at the top of Division One when they won 2-1 at Chelsea, Mick Jones and Joe Jordan netting for the visitors while Peter Osgood replied. Second placed Liverpool dropped a point only managing to draw 1-1 at Norwich City with a late Peter Cormack effort. Burnley retained third place with a 2-1 victory over Arsenal. Middlesbrough maintained their six point lead at the top of Division Two when both they and Luton Town recorded 1-0 home wins, the leaders defeating Nottingham Forest while the Hatters beat Aston Villa a result which took them above Leyton Orient who were beaten 0-1 at home by Carlisle United. In the second round of the F.A. Cup five of the twenty ties were drawn including non-league sides Altrincham drawing 0-0 at Blackburn Rovers and Blyth Spartans holding Grimsby Town 1-1 while Grantham Town had a similar result at home to Rochdale. Non-league clubs to make it through were Alvechurch who blew away King’s Lynn 6-1 and Hendon who won 3-0 at Merthyr Tydfil.

We, then still Hastings & St. Leonards, entertained Peacehaven & Telscombe in Division Two of the Sussex County League and won 2-1 with both goals scored by Geoff Collins. The original Hastings United were at Ashford Town where they lost 0-2 in Division One (South) of the Southern League.

2001 With Barclaycard Premiership leaders Liverpool not in action, Arsenal could have moved within a point but only managed a 1-1 draw at lowly West Ham United, Ashley Cole scoring for the Gunners and Frederic Kanoute for the home side. Leeds United’s inactivity cost them third place which was taken over by Newcastle United who beat Blackburn Rovers 2-1. Tottenham Hotspur’s Les Ferdinand scored the Premier League’s 10,000th goal when he netted Spurs opener in their 4-0 defeat of Fulham at White Hart Lane. Burnley opened up a seven point gap at the top of Division One despite having struggled to defeat basement side Stockport County 3-2 at Turf Moor. W.B.A. and Norwich City moved level on points with Manchester City and Wolves. Albion missing second spot after only managing a 1-1 draw at Crewe Alexandra while City were defeating Coventry City 2-0. Stoke City went above Brighton on goal difference at the top of Division Two after beating Wycombe Wanderers 5-1; with the Seagulls not in action Brentford moved within a point by beating Wrexham 3-0. The top two in Division Three had 1-0 home wins as Plymouth Argyle hosted Darlington and Luton Town entertained Rushden.

Although we, then Hastings Town, had played four days earlier, we had no match this day and would not play again until the following Saturday.

VCD ATHLETIC FC PLAYER PROFILES CONTINUED FROM P22 Junior Baker Defender Joined the club at the start of last season from Thamesmead Town and settled in quickly, bringing strength and height to the defence. Good in the air, strong in the tackle and reads the game well giving opponents a tough time. Also dangerous in attack from set pieces where he is dangerous in the air, using his height well to cause problems for opposing defences.

Tyrone Guthrie Midfield Joined the club at the beginning of this season from Sittingbourne. An athletic player with a good work rate and box to box energy who should prove an asset in midfield. Strong in the tackle, with a good range of passing and will be a valuable addition to the squad. Jack Steventon Midfield/Defender A tall commanding player equally effective either in defence or midfield who shows great composure for his age. Good in the air, comfortable on the ball with a good passing range, and should prove an integral part of our side this season. Was spotted last season at Herne Bay from where he joined us and looks to be an excellent acquisition. Ali Fuseini Midfield An experienced player who joined the Vickers at the start of this season and looks an excellent signing. An imposing midfielder with an eye for goal who links well with his colleagues. Strong in the tackle and comfortable on the ball and should prove a great asset to the club. Previous experience with Bromley, Margate, Sutton United and Welling United. Jeffrey Gyamfi Midfield Joined the Vickers towards the end of last season and quickly secured a place in the side. Composed on the ball and shows versatility with a range of passing, and also has pace. Strong in the tackle and will be an integral part of our midfield. Previous experience with Chelsea Youth and Witham Town. 42

Midfield Signed for the Vickers at the start of last season and has settled into midfield, where he has become an integral component. Has good energy, pace and has had some impressive performances, linking up well with his team mates.

Aymun El-Moyhalbel

Midfield/Forward A young player who is now making his mark in the team. With quick feet and great ball skills he gives defences a hard time with his trickery. Has unlimited energy and likes to get forward quickly, and could have a great future in the game. It is up to him how far he wants to go.

Dominic Odusanya

Midfield Another new signing for the Vickers who likes to play in an attacking midfield role. A player with good skills and technique, plus pace which makes him a difficult opponent. Will be looking to secure a regular place in the side after impressing in pre-season. Previous experience with Erith & Belvedere and Leatherhead.

Charlie MacDonald

Forward A vastly experienced player who joined the club at the beginning of the season from Cray Wanderers. Has an excellent goal-scoring record at every club he has been with including former Football League clubs, and brings professionalism to the Vickers which should benefit our younger players. With the chances we create it could be a prolific season for him. Previous clubs include Charlton, Brentford, and Oldham.

Malachi Hudson Forward First signed for the club in 2016 before his career was curtailed by injury. Now returned to full fitness adds much to our attacking options. A tricky, skilful wide player who has great pace and gives defences a testing time, and should be a vital component of the team. Alex Gaggin

Forward Joined at the beginning of the season after being on the radar for much of last year. Has pace, good technique with a great attitude, and has immediately settled into the side. Will give us good balance down the right flank giving opposing defenders a tough time. Previously with Margate and East Grinstead.

Courtney Barrington

Forward A young wide player with great trickery and pace who put in some impressive performances in pre-season which have earned him a place in the side. Links up well down the flank and gives defenders a hard time with his natural ability. Looks to have a great future in the game.
