HUFC vs Faversham Town FC - ILSE

Page 1

Welcome Welcome everybody to The Continental Pilot Field for another league fixture as we look to keep up the momentum in our pursuit for promotion. I would like to welcome the staff, management and players of Faversham Town but always I would be lying if I wished them luck today. Thank you to each and every one of you who was here for our New Year’s Day fixture, a day we made history at this football club by breaking our all-time league attendance record with a fantastic 2,017. As most know I’m always optimistic and believe we can achieve anything at this club but even I was blown away by the 2,000 plus. This knocked the record of the 2005 league game vs AFC Wimbledon, what makes our new record special is 99.9% in attendance were there for Hastings United. This shows the power and growth we currently possess and it’s our duty to keep pushing, keep believing and keep being a key part of our town, something that fills me with pride.

Club CEO/Chairman

Billy Wood Congratulations to Gary for picking up the Manager of the Month Award. Gaz, Browny and Jon Meeney have been such a breath of fresh air since taking over and this award is acknowledgement of that. ‘Gary Elphick’s Claret & White Army!’ Also congratulations to Louis Rogers for another Goalkeeper of the Month Award. I am delighted we have Louis at this club, one because he is such an important player on the pitch but he also cares a lot about the club. Well done our number 1! Let’s be loud, let’s be proud and as always … UNITED!

COYU! ...

The Gaffer Gary Elphick Good afternoon and welcome to today’s game against Faversham Town. Once again I’m expecting a tough game, Faversham are very quick on the counter attack so we must be on our A game and manage the ball well. We go into the new year top of the league and unbeaten in seven. But my blinkers are firmly on, there’s areas we still need to improve on and we must aim to keep our consistency. I hope today there is once again a big crowd to roar us on and I’m astounded at the crowds we’ve been getting. Hopefully our play will keep you entertained and coming back! Onwards and upwards!

MATCH MASCOT Alfie Jones

- Age 11

School - St Leonard’s CE Primary Academy Team - Hastings United U12 Favourite Team - Manchester United Alfie is a goalkeeper who has great potential. He is a fantastic shot stopper who continues to work hard to improve himself. Alfie biggest asset is his passing ability. He can pass the ball confidently short or long and gives his team great confidence to play their passing game. Despite being in year 6 at school Alfie plays up in the under-12 team where his managers Sean Ray and Steve Mcgowan have very high hopes for his future. Alfie also represented Sussex last season which was brilliant for him personally and also for the club as a whole.

LAST MEETING

MATCH REPORT By Bob Quinn @BobJQuinn

0 0 Saturday 26 September 2020 Isthmian League SE Div Attendance: 236 Saturday 26th September, the temperature has dropped as if we’ve skipped autumn and moved directly to winter. It’s dry but the gusts are strong enough to displace a ball placed for a goal kick. An ideal day for sailing or kite flying. United are wearing their third strip of all skyblue and include Friday’s signing Knory Scott in the starting line-up. Faversham are turned out in stark white shirts, black shorts and socks. The ‘Lilywhites’ kick off but for the opening ten minutes it is the ‘U’s on top, the wind behind their backs. Rolling the ball around at will and winning a throw-in down the left which is flung in by Ollie Black and headed over by Gary Elphick unchallenged. United’s possession continues another ten minutes, four corners are won in quick time but come to nothing. There’s a delay after Craig Stone is caught by a stray elbow and this disrupts United’s rhythm. Whilst there is no discernible change in tactics, the home side are suddenly on the front foot, winning three consecutive free kicks. The third is played short down the left, a low

cross is pulled back and Matt Bourne is clipped in the area. With no hesitation the referee awards a penalty and there are no complaints. United’s clean sheet record is under pressure, but we have faith in goalkeeper Louis Rogers, and he doesn’t disappoint, diving low to his right to save. As we head to half-time the wind blows stronger suggesting playing into the wind second-half will be difficult. Faversham using their local knowledge perhaps. Worrall is proving to be United’s pivot, always available, keeping the play ticking over. And it is Worrall who manufactures a chance out of the nothing. Spotting the goalkeeper on walkabout he launches a shot from the halfway line. Luke Watkins does well to backtrack and stretch every sinew to tip the effort around the post. The final meaningful action of the half. United restart yet in contrast to the first half it is Faversham launching attacks in the early stages. A long throw is hacked clear amid shouts for handball, then a central free kick almost releases Harry Harding before he is crowded out. The home side are nothing if not direct. Ten minutes into the second half and a cynical handball sees Abdul Lyoubi booked. Aaron Capon would have been away down the right. As if a switch has been pressed there is space in midfield for United to exploit and the home team bring all their all players behind the ball. Ben Pope has a shot blocked. Raheem Sterling-Parker shoots on the turn from the edge of the area, saved low down. A corner is won but headed away. Each time Faversham clear the ball, United regain possession and come straight back at them but without creating a clear-cut chance. Then, with twenty minutes remaining, the ‘Lilywhites’ change tack again. Siege mentality is cast aside,

and they are back on the offensive. A break down the right results in a dangerous low cross dissecting Rogers and his retreating defence, with no Faversham player able to get a touch in the six-yard box. The ball is retrieved, and the follow-up shot is deflected wide for a corner. From which the home side win a free kick, 25-yards out to the left of the area. United form a three-man wall which does its job, deflecting Harding’s shot for another corner. We enter five minutes of added time with both teams still admirably searching for a breakthrough. Craig Stone’s opportunistic header is saved, before Faversham break down the left and also have a shot saved. The final act comes in the 95th minute. Stone punts a long ball into the danger area where Capon is floored by a centre-half’s clumsy challenge. The referee checks the location of the foul and points to the spot. Time is surely up. With Pope having been subbed, Worrall places the ball and is kept waiting. On Tuesday night the same player hammered his spot kick into the top corner. This time he places a shot low to the goalkeepers left, too close and pushed around the post. There are still seconds left for the corner to be struck then the final whistle blows and United must settle for a point on the road. Hastings Utd : Rogers, Black, Worrall, Elphick, Stone, Elliott, Pope (75’ Pogue), Chalmers (71’ Sterling-Parker), Cruttwell, Ward, Scott (56’ Capon) (Unused subs: Goldsmith, Adams) Faversham Town : Watkins, Jones, Lyoubi, Pont, Bourne, Denny, Okoh, Chambers (61’ McMorrow), Harding, Dos Santos (62’ Oluwasemo), Ogboe (62’ Ibe) (Unused subs: Speirs, Williams)

Gut Feeling Simon Stoddart My waffle and opinions, I don't speak for Hastings United. Personal observations on the world of semi-pro football and sport in general.

VCD 2-2. A draw. First one since the opening day of the season when Herne Bay were here. And the first league goals conceded since Haywards Heath away on 27 November. I had to follow proceedings from work in the usual on line way, constantly refreshing Footballwebpages. And given the other results, not a bad day. Cray Valley seem to have fallen apart as Burgess Hill did us a big favour. The only winners in the top 6 were Ashford and yet another top attendance for that game at Ramsgate - 1024 at Southwood Road. Our game at Ashford in 3 weeks is to be relished.

2022 STARTS WITH 2017 When the queue for half time nosh and schlurps extends back virtually into Elphinstone Road, when the 50/50 pay out is £248.50, when you just squeeze into a parking slot in Ochiltree Road at 2.15 - you know you will have a more than decent attendance. And bearing in mind Lancing probably didn't bring more than 20, that also tells you that the locals are - getting into their local club. This season's massive increases in semi pro football attendances around the 'pyramid' have been looked at several times already but clearing 2000 for that hard graft 90 minutes against Lancing, that was really something.

It's not just the Pilot Field. Gates are up everywhere for reasons that have been looked at in previous programmes. Four step 4 clubs in the top dozen attendances on New Year's Day is quite something. Couple of them, Ilkeston (2063) and Halesowen (1331) up in The Midlands, old Southern Premier opponents we last encountered in 2002-3. The anything but Southern League as I used to call it. Step 5, the old Kent League, Chatham had 1876 in for their game against Sheppey on Monday. Unheard of.

DAVID BEALEY WOULD LIKE TO SAY........ "Thank you to all those who came to my assistance after my fall in the main stand just before the start of Saturday's game. As soon as I tripped and fell there appeared a lady who quickly attended to me and got in touch with the medical team who David Bealey in rather promptly put me better condition. All being in a wheelchair well I shall catch up with and in no time at him this afternoon. all I was sitting next to the ambulance and being given treatment and all sorts of tests. It was all extremely efficient and done with great expertise. At the age of 77 my memory for names is not too good any more so I can't put names to those involved, but many thanks whoever they are." Happy to pass on Dave's appreciation of all the help he got last weekend. He was one of Paul Hoggard's predecessors as the Hastings Town programme editor back in the mid/late 1990s. Top bloke to work with.

STICK INSECTS, TURNSTILES AND PIES ...

12 Jan 2002 - having been seen by the Boswell Barmy Army being admitted to Dorchester's palatial Avenue Stadium through another door because I was too well built (fat) to get through a turnstile (stick insect proportions) - I was subjected to a rendition of 'Who ate all the pies'. Where did 20 years go? L-R Robin Powell, Mark Westbrook, Andy Boswell, Anthony Boswell and Toby Cook. Game finished 1-1, Town scorer Paul Jones, att 605.

HASTINGS PROGRAMME HISTORY

Well worth a look. Vernon Couchman has this excellent online library of programmes. Facebook, Twitter - get in there and have a look at Hastings Programme History.

WHITEHAWK 3BRIDGES Well, well. Any of you see the "highlights" of this one? 5 red cards with a 3 Bridges recipient surely deserving a long long ban for his horrendous foul. The same fella, incidentally, that Craig Stone superbly (and legally) tackled when he broke clear in our game there a few weeks ago. Check it out at @YourInstReplay on Twitter. Your Instant Replay - yet another excellent media link to the world of semi pro football. When we eventually go digital with programmes - it's gonna happen eventually - then direct links can be provided.

FAVERSHAM IN TOWN More hard graft awaits this afternoon. Faversham gave Ashford a tough 90 minutes on New Year's Day while Lancing were doing much the same here. Faversham picked up a hard earned point at Homelands from a 2-2 draw. The teams expected to do well this season are undoubtedly not getting things their own way, it's a hard, hard division.

Over the last few seasons we’ve spent rather a lot of time at Hastings United, and we’re back there again, so the Pilot Field probably needs an extension to its trophy cabinet. Same club, different manager, however, as this time Gary Elphick picks up his first prize as United boss, courtesy of his side winning all four of their league matches in December - including victories over top five rivals Herne Bay and Ramsgate. Congratulations to Gary and to all who play for him!

Our Pitching In Isthmian South East table has a rather ominous look about it, with favourites Hastings United at the top. December saw the side from the Pilot Field win every league match, and furthermore do that without conceding a single goal - a momentous feat for which their number one, Louis Rogers, can take a large part of the credit. Louis and his defence have been quite magnificent, and a pair of gloves will soon be off to the Sussex seaside in recognition.

ON THIS DATE - 8 JANUARY

1997 Such is the turnover of managers it is rarely a shock when a manager leaves a club but there was widespread and genuine shock on Tyneside when Kevin Keegan resigned as Newcastle United manager on this day in 1997. Former Newcastle player Keegan had taken up his first managerial post at St James’ Park in 1992 when the club was in great danger of suffering relegation to the third tier. But at the start of 1997 his Newcastle side were fourth in the Premier League, had just beaten Tottenham 7-1 in the League and had recorded a 5-0 victory over Manchester United earlier in the season. In their playing ranks they had Alan Shearer who Newcastle had bought six months earlier for a world record £15m fee, and he was scoring regularly. The club and their fans were on a high but Kevin Keegan believed he had taken the club as far as he could, and so resigned.

2000 I think that it would be fair to say that referees never always get it right but back in 2000 Ref Rob Harris got it very wrong. On Saturday January 8th 2000 a Fourth Round FA Cup tie between Tranmere Rovers and Sunderland at Prenton Park had a lively last few seconds. Tranmere's Clint Hall was sent off in injury time for a second bookable offence but during the ensuing on-pitch confrontation a Tranmere sub, Stephen Frail, was sent on unnoticed by the officials. Until the error was noticed - resulting in another confrontation - Tranmere played with a full team, much to the displeasure of Sunderland who lost the match 1-0. Sunderland manager Peter Reid said 'It was like Billy Smart's circus out there. I don't like talking about officials instead of football - but someone has made a major error.' The Wearsiders lost an appeal to have the match replayed but for the first time match officials were brought before an FA Commission to examine their actions. Ref Harris, assistant ref Tony Green and fourth official David Unsworth were all said to have 'less than proficiently applied the laws of the game' with Harris being given a ban as a result.

THAT'S HANSON FOR ASHFORD Nuts and Bolts strengthen, adding Cray Wanderers midfielder. Cray Wanderers have announced the departure of midfielder Jack Hanson to Pitching In Isthmian South East promotion-chasers Ashford United. Jack signed on at Wands in May, and made nine appearances this season, the last of them coming on December 27th against Margate. He was a youth player at Dover Athletic, and spent time at Hemel Hempstead Town in January of last year, making his debut in the National League South match at Chippenham Town. Prior to his move he was part of a number of Dover Athletic squads, and a first team starter during pre-season. He was playing for the Under-18 side at the Crabble whilst still under sixteen, and part of the Kent FA Schools Under-18 squad too. His also spent some time at Sittingbourne, making two appearances during the 2019-20 campaign.

LEAGUE NEWS From: Ian Townsend

2,017 at the Pilot Field - and they don't leave disappointed ... Leaders Hastings United were kept at bay for sixty-eight minutes by visitors Lancing, but finally took the lead on sixty-nine when Jack Dixon opened the scoring- and held on for three points which takes them four points clear at the top. A superb two thousand and seventeen fans turned up to watch - a total bettered only by Pitching In Isthmian Premier Division Worthing. Second place Ashford United got the start they’d have hoped for against Faversham Town when Gary Lockyer put them ahead after just three minutes. The Lilywhites drew level eleven minutes after the break through Clark Woodcock, but only four minutes after that Tashi-Jay Kwayie restored the Nuts and Bolts lead. That lead slipped again, however, as Jono Richardson equalised twelve minutes from time, and the Nuts and Bolts stay second but lost ground on the leaders.

South East Division

New Year’s Day - Results Round Up Whitstable Town had a torrid time on Monday, and New Years Day didn’t start well for them either, Ramsgate scoring after five minutes, Tijan Jadama with his third of the campaign. Ollie Bate made it two nine minutes after half time, and then the Oysterboys fell apart, Ashley Miller making it three, and Joshua Ajayi making it four in the sixty fifth minute. The hosts got themselves together again and Muhammed Cham reduced the arrears five minutes from time, but that was no more than a consolation as the Rams end the day in fifth. Haywards Heath Town slip to sixth after their match with Whitehawk ended goalless. It took an hour for a goal to arrive as Sittingbourne hosted Sevenoaks Town, and when it arrived it came to the Brickies, Toby Bancroft- on the pitch for only five minutes- giving them the lead. The visitors couldn’t find an equaliser, and ended the day with ten men after Fjord Rogers, back from Cray Wanderers, saw red.

Cray Valley PM welcomed VCD Athletic, and were rather too welcoming when Anthony Adesite gave Vickers the lead on twenty-one minutes. The next goal was crucial, and it again went to the visitors, Youssef Bamba making it two- and the points were confirmed when Ayman El-Mogharbel made it three, four minutes from time. The Millers stay third, but are four points off the summit.

Phoenix Sports have looked much improved of late, but that didn’t stop Oscar Housego putting Corinthian ahead after eight minutes. Only Ashford United managed to defeat Corinthian during December, and the hoops showed why, holding on for another three points which sees them end the day in tenth place.

Herne Bay got seven on Monday, and were quickly ahead at Hythe Town, Dan Johnson scoring after fourteen minutes- but they weren’t ahead for long, Luca Woodhouse equalising three minutes later. Kieron Campbell restored the visitors lead nine minutes before the break, but there was no runaway victory this time, the Cannons pushing them all the way in the search for an equaliser. It didn’t come, and Bay are fourth.

Three Bridges welcomed East Grinstead Town in the A264 derby, and it was the Wasps who stung first, Andrew Briggs opening the scoring immediately after half time. The equaliser arrived nine minutes later, Camron Lawson with the goal, but it was next strike Town as Alex Battle scored from the spot on seventy two minutes. A late Bridges onslaught came to naught, and the Wasps took all three points.

OUR VISITORS FAVERSHAM TOW N Club: Faversham Town Football Club Nickname: The Lilywhites Club Formed: 1884 Chairman: Paul Bennett

FAVERSHAM TOWN FC HISTORY The club's origins go back to 1884, and they entered the Kent League for the first time a decade later. The club name however was not really consistent, with the team turning out as Faversham Town, Faversham Invicta, Faversham Services, Faversham Railway and Faversham Rangers among others before being disbanded shortly before the Second World War. Faversham Town reformed after the war and entered the Kent League in 1947. The club moved to its current home - Salters Lane the following year. Faversham Town had a decent amateur side but found the going tough against some of the professional Kent League clubs. Nevertheless, they won the Kent Amateur Cup in 1957 and 1959. With the Kent League folding in 1959, the club had spells in both the Aetolian and Greater London leagues before rejoining the revived Kent League in 1968. Success soon followed. They were Kent League champions in 1970 and 1971, and lifted the Kent Amateur Cup three years in a row between 1972 and 1974. After a brief flirtation with the Athenian League in the mid seventies, the club returned to the Kent League, winning the Kent Senior Trophy in 1977.

Ground: Salters Lane Faversham Capacity: 2,000 (200 Seated) Team colours: Black & White Manager: James Collins Assistant Manager: Scott Davenport Coach: Grant Turner The following season they repeated this success and were also crowned Kent League champions, completing a famous "double". The Lilywhites won the Kent League again in 1990, but league form dipped in the 92/93 season and was to stay that way for several seasons. The club managed to to reach the final of the Kent League Challenge Cup in 2000, but things were in rapid decline. Matters reached crisis point in 2003, when the KCFA suspended the club for non payment of fines, with the club's operators blaming just about everyone for the mess except themselves. In the following months, the once proud Salters Lane ground was systematically wrecked by vandals. Meanwhile, club trustees led by businessman Ray Leader fought a desperate battle to heal a widening rift with the previous regime over the ownership of the club and ground. In a separate development, the Faversham Town Independent Supporters Club had been formed, and quickly gained a membership of over 300 paid up members in the market town. This was despite the fact the club had no team, no manager, and a ground that had been totally wrecked by vandals and now resembled a bomb site. Perhaps the real

turning point came when trustees and Independent Supporters Club committee members got together and declared an alliance to get the club back on its feet. An interim club committee was formed, and the long road to recovery was started. The revival was slow, but things finally started to happen. The ownership dispute was settled and access to the ground obtained. Volunteer workers were confronted with completely smashed and vandalised buildings, and shoulder-height grass on what had been the pitch. A massive clear up operation began but it was back breaking work. Meanwhile, paperwork was put in order with a new club constitution written and agreed.Kent County FA allowed the club to retain their coveted senior status subject to several conditions. Local authority grants were applied for and secured, sponsorship deals obtained, and the club embarked on a range of fund raising initiatives. Slowly but surely, Salters Lane was returned to its former glory, before the future became even brighter with the erection of brand new floodlights. The revival of club and ground from the jaws of death was nothing short of a miracle - a story that would surely rival the efforts to revive both "The Valley" at Charlton, and Accrington Stanley F.C. The revived club played their first season back in 05/06, competing in the Kent County League and finishing as runners-up. Having passed ground inspections and fulfilled minimum criteria, promotion to the Kent League was confirmed, and Faversham Town had at last "come home". Season 2007/08 saw the arrival of Justin Luchford and Jimmy Strouts taking over the management with Town second bottom of the league. The team sunk to bottom before the pair gradually steered them up to mid table. Strouts soon left for personal reasons and Luchford, along with Clive Walker, took the Lilywhites to the Kent Senior Trophy final in season 2009/10, beating Greenwich 2-1 to lift the trophy. A week later, they were crowned Kent League Premier Division champions. Towards the end of his first season in the Ryman League, and with Town within touching distance of the play-offs, Luchford resigned. His place was taken by his assistant Ray Turner. Turner took

charge of the last seven league games securing eighth spot - the highest position of any Kent team competing at that level. Another significant milestone was reached in 2010 when the revamped stadium was renamed Shepherd Neame Stadium after a sponsorship deal with the town's famous brewery. Having consolidated their position as a mid-table Ryman South side during the first two years of Turner's reign, Faversham embarked on one of the best seasons in the club's history during the 2012/13 season. The Lilywhites lost just three away league games all campaign on their way to finish third and reach the Ryman South play-off final against all odds. However, at Maidstone United's newly-built Gallagher Stadium in front of a 2,226 strongcrowd, Town were unable to pull off one final upset against a side with huge investment and backing. Maidstone cruising to a 3-0 victory to deny Faversham their first tastes of Ryman Premier League football. Town spent the majority of the 2013/14 campaign just outside the play-offs, and ultimately had to settle for tenth position in their fourth season in the Ryman South. Off the pitch, Town continued to grow with another significant advance. They came together with nearby Faversham Town Youth & Juniors to form a new youth section, meaning boys were now playing in the famous white and black kit from the age of five. The move also created a route through from youth development into the senior side and enabled the newly-expanded club achieved FA Charter Standard Community Club rank, marking their rise in status. The Lilywhites took another step forward in February 2014 with the announcement of an ambitious project to redevelop Shepherd Neame Stadium. The plans - broken down into five phases - include rebuilding the changing rooms, adding hospitality an function rooms, extra seating in the stands and a new stadium entrance. A coffee shop and retail store will then be added, with meeting rooms and offices also being built to bring in Continued on Page 22

FAVERSHAM TOWN HISTORY Continued additional revenue. A new 120-seater stand, fitness centre and sports hall will also be built. Fundraising for the project then began. Faversham had a productive 2014/15 season, scoring 111 league goals - more than any other Ryman League side that campaign - and amassing a record 97 points to finish in third place in the Ryman South for the second time in three seasons. But the club suffered more play-off heartache, as they lost 5-4 on penalties at home to Merstham in their Ryman South Play-off Semi-Final following a goalless draw away. Faversham came fifth at the end of the 2015-16 season, again reaching the play-offs, but after beating Dorking Wanderers 2-1 in the semi-final they lost 3-0 to Worthing in the final, leaving them knocking once more on the door of the Ryman Premier Division. The 2016/17 season was one of transition for the Lilywhites on the pitch, and success off it as they forged ahead with Phase One their ambitious rebuilding programme. A tenth place finish was achieved with a young squad as manager Ray Turner dealt with a number of unexpected player departures, which led to a mid-season wobble. However, in May 2017 MP Helen Whately opened the new changing rooms as the first stage of the stadium redevelopment was finally completed. Another significant advance came when, for the first time, the club were able to field Kent Youth League standard squads at every age group from Under 13s upwards in the 2017/18 campaign, a mark of their growing stature in the region and of their commitment to a successful youth policy. In a further development, the Under 21s also switched to become an Under 23 Development team with the aim of helping young players bridge

the gap from the Under 18s to the first team. The progress marked the fruition of a vision set out five years earlier by Ray Turner and Head of Youth Chris Greenfield, who was promoted to U23s Manager. In 2018/19, a disappointing start to the season led to Ray Turner stepping aside. Phil Miles and Dan Chapman were appointed as joint managers in his place. The lacklustre season continued, and in the end the team finished 17th, two places and ten points clear of relegation. Towards the end of the season, Paul Gates and Keith Chilvers were appointed joint managers of the renewed U23s squad, and senior players were let go in favour of rebuilding the team with a greater emphasis on promoting youth. After an indifferent start to the 2019/20 season, Town parted company with their joint managers in October. In their place, new manager James Collins brought in assistant Nick Davis and Coach Brad Sandeman. A huge influx of players, coupled with the departure of players including club stalwart Matt Bourne - the club's record appearance holder - meant that by December a new-look squad was taking to the field and a new era had begun. As the club looked to attract more sponsorship to fund its ambitions, the stadium was renamed Aquatherm Stadium after an agreement with the multinational pipe manufacturers. The curtailed 2020/21 season saw Town finished their six games unbeaten, despite playing all of the promotion favourites, indicating that the club had turned the corner. And ahead of the 2021/22 campaign the club signed its biggest ever shirts deal with Smart Office.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS & CURRENT FORM GUIDE Faversham Town’s location and chequered history has meant that the clubs have rarely met although we did visit Salters Lane for preseason matches in 1989, 1990 and 1991. The first meeting on Tuesday, 1st August saw Faversham Town win 2-0, a year later on Tuesday, 31st July the sides played out a goalless draw then on Thursday, 1st August, 1991 when we won 2-0 both goals being penalties scored by Terry White. In season 1993/94 both sides competed in the Kent Midweek League where sides often fielded

near first teams for matches; we won our home match 3-1 with goals from Peter Heritage, Paul Tuppenney and Danny Whyman, completing the double with a 1-0 away victory courtesy of a lone David Powell goal. In season 2012/13 we visited Faversham Town for a pre-season fixture on the evening of Tuesday, 31st July, 2012 when a small crowd of just 70 saw the home side run out 2-0 winners with goals from Luke Harvey, in the first half, and a sixty-sixth minute goal from former United player Antonio Gonnella.

ON THIS DATE 8th January 1955 FA CUP 3RD ROUND SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY 2 HASTINGS UNITED 1

for an hour, when the Wednesday equalised. Then it was not until about three minutes from the end that they could snatch the goal which put a gallant team out of the Cup. If those of you who were unable to make the journey - several hundred were there to cheer the United on could only have heard the comments of the Wednesday supporters it would have warmed your hearts. Phrases such as, "the better team lost", "Hastings earned a replay at the very least" were streaming from the lips of a crowd which gave United a great Yorkshire welcome as they came on to the field and gave them, when they scored, a cheer which was only a little less fervant than those which greeted the home team's goals. This was in my opinion, the best performance the United have ever put up. In the first half they were playing the better and more-direct football and thoroughly deserved their interval lead. In the second half the Wednesday's speed began to tell, but still a defence that never showed the slightest semblance of panic held out well enough to have been entitled to a replay. The hero of the game? Big - in every sense of the word - Bill Griffiths. He ruled his area of the field, intercepted beautifully, headed surely, and looked a player of class. As if this was not enough, he started the move which led to United's goal. It was a real captain's display. I only saw him make one actual mistake during the whole game, and that had no unfortunate consequences. The defence as a whole held the Wednesday's attack magnificently.

HASTINGS UNITED's visit to the Hillsborough ground in the 3rd round FA Cup-tie on Saturday will not be forgotten by the Sheffield crowd - and what a sporting crowd they were, too - for many a long day (writes "Observer" Football reporter). Leading 1-0 at the interval, and deservedly so, the United kept their First Division opponents at bay

Jack Ball yet again rose to the occasion. Quick thinking and sure, he like Griffiths, really looked the part. So did Crapper, who showed the coolness and touch of a veteran . He had an easier task in the second half, when centreforward Shaw was limping on the left wing. Chadwick had the nastiest job in the game in having to watch Marriott a fast , aggressive and accurate winger who is, according to the Wednesday programme, at the top of his form. Chadwick did his best, but the winger could not be held in check. Both the Wednesday's goals came following his centres and it was he more than

anyone who put the United out. Peacock was always in the thick of things, and he earned admiring comments. He nearly gave us a heart attack when he headed a very fast ball back to Ball - A foot either side and it would have been an "own goal" but he redeemed this dangerous manoeuvre when he saved a ball on the line when a goal looked certain. Dickie Girling showed some lovely touches, particularly in the first half. The second half saw a gradually increasing cohesion between Quixall and Marriott, and every time the ball was on the swing there was danger in the air. The attack, for a large part of the first half, and in snatches in the second half made the Wednesday defence work for its living. But there is no doubt that the usual forward line, with Girling on the left wing, might well have tipped the scales in the United's favour. Not that I quarrel with Jack Tresadern's team selection. I feel, with due respect, that if Tomlinson had been at left back he would have been given a fearful runaround by Marriott. But Robinson did have the distinction of sharing in the United's goal. I was more disappointed than I have ever been before in Hillman's display. He held up movements, and made little use of the skill and speed he possesses. The effectiveness of Parks was reduced by his not having his usual partner, but he got through some nice work. Asher was generally well policed by McEvoy, but he completely eluded the centre-half when he scored the United's goal. The punch in the attack came from Alan Burgess. He was ever ready to have a go, and nearly won the match a few minutes from time. The United made a good start, a neat move putting them in the right humour. They showed no trace of nerves, settled down immediately, and, without doubt, were looking the better team. Some of the Wednesday's passing was poor, and their defence was not happy. A good header by Burgess from Parks' pass was the first real effort of the game, and soon after the inside right got in a shot which Mclntosh saved well.

It was the United who looked the more dangerous, and they took the lead deservedly after twentyfive minutes with a great goal. Griffiths intercepted, beautifully, took the ball down and swung it out to the one unmarked man, Robinson. A delicate push to Parks saw the inside left racing towards the line. A centre and Asher capped a perfect move by heading it in to the accompaniment of an unselfish roar of applause from the crowd. This really brought the Wednesday to their heels with a jerk, and their quick retaliation enabled Jack Ball to bring off two wonderful saves. But Burgess was there again, with a fine drive which just cleared the bar. And then came the miss of the match. McAnearney was put right through, shot wide with only Ball to beat, and hid his face in his hands. The second half belonged to Sheffield, and after fifteen minutes Shaw headed in very neatly from Marriott's centre. The United held on and their supporters held their breaths. The United rode the storm, began to counter-attack and ten minutes from time all but scored when, from Asher's cross, Burgess and Mclntosh got to the ball together. It went wide for a corner. And then came the unkindest cut of all. With a little over two minutes to go and everyone talking of the replay which the United had so richly earned, Wednesday made their final thrust. There was a fusillade of shots and Greensmith scored. What a pity it was. But well done, United: very well done indeed. Your supporters are proud of you. The attendance was 25,965 and receipts totalled £2,810. Sheffield Wednesday: Mclntosh, Con well , Curtis, Gannon, McEvoy, Turley, Marriott, Quixall , Shaw, McAnearney, J. Greensmith. Hastings United: Ball, Crapper, Chadwick, Peacock, Griffiths, Girling, Hillman, Burgess, Asher, Parks, Robinson.

LEAGUE NEWS From: Ian Townsend

South East Division Monday January 3 - Results Round Up

Ashford United close the gap on Hastings at the summit ... Hastings United have hit their stride and moved almost unnoticed to the top of the table, and they started well at VCD Athletic, Dave Martin putting them ahead after ten minutes. Vickers were in fine form at the weekend, and struck back on twenty-eight minutes, Chris Edwards giving the home crowd something to shout about, but the next goal went to United, and arrived twenty five minutes from time, Sam Adams with it. Once more Vickers fired back, Youssef Bamba equalising from the spot with seventeen minutes remaining, earning a point for the hosts. United stay top, but their lead is reduced to two points. Ramsgate and Ashford United faced off at Southwood, and the Nuts and Bolts were quickly ahead, Gary Lockyer - who scored in three minutes against Faversham Town on Saturday - taking a minute longer to open his account this time. Tijan Jadama’s fourth of the campaign drew the Rams level on twenty-five minutes, but ten minutes later a foul by Jake McIntyre on Lockyer saw a red card waved at the Rams man and a Tashi-Jay Kwayie penalty converted for the visitors. The ten men quickly responded, and the deadly Joshua Ajayi levelled, his nineteenth of the campaign - but the last word went to Lockyer, his winner coming fifteen minutes from time and seeing the Nuts and Bolts become the only side in the top five to win.

later. The Hillians didn’t lie down, and Lewis Taylor halved the deficit just after the hour, before being given another boost as Hassan Ibrahiym saw red for the Millers. Still, it looked as if Cray Valley would hold on - only for the hosts to score two goals right at the end, Lewis Finney and Max Miller with them, to earn a famous victory. The visitors ended with nine men, as Rory Hill also saw red. Haywards Heath Town and Corinthian managed a nil-nil draw in Kent that left Heath in fifth. Faversham Town hosted a Whitstable Town side whose previous good form had seemingly deserted them over the holiday period, but the Oysterboys went ahead on twentytwo minutes, Stephen Okoh putting them in front. They doubled their advantage twenty minutes from time, Kemo Darboe with the goal, and although the Lilywhites got one back - Emmanuel Oluwasemo - held on for three points. Lancing welcomed a Phoenix Sports side who have decided they won’t be whipping boys anymore and took the lead just after the hour, Malaki Toussaint with the opening goal. Sports doubled their advantage with fifteen minutes left, Lee Bird with their second, and closed the gap on their second bottom opponents to four points. Sevenoaks Town and Hythe Town managed no goals in the first half, then two within six minutes after the break - Jordan Sarfo giving the Cannons the lead and Kyle De Silva equalising for the hosts. Louis Collins then gave the hosts the lead with eighteen minutes remaining, and Fjord Rogers made sure of Oaks first win since November 27th with a third right at the end.

Herne Bay and Sittingbourne have both been in good form of late, and the Brickies showed that form early on, Toby Bancroft - starting this one after coming on and scoring the winner against Sevenoaks Town on Saturday - giving them a second minute lead. The equaliser arrived just before the break, Kieron Campbell getting it, and that was that, the two having to be content with a point each.

Whitehawk hosted Three Bridges in a Sussex derby, and the visitors saw Noel Leighton give them the lead on twenty minutes. On sixty-two minutes we had uproar, as three players saw red - Leighton and Joe Stone for Bridges, Jamie Splatt for the Hawks - so we had half an hour of ten versus nine. Could the visitors hold out? They could, but they ended the match with eight men as Bryan Villavicencio saw red - not that Hawks were much better off, as Alex Malins had also been sent off by then.

Cray Valley PM travelled to Burgess Hill Town without a win in four, but if they were lacking confidence they didn’t show it, Rory Hill putting them ahead on sixteen minutes and Marcel Barrington making it two-nil just two minutes

East Grinstead Town made it four matches unbeaten and two wins in a row with victory over Chichester City. The match had only one goal, and it went to Merrick James Lewis eight minutes from time.
