WELCOME Good afternoon all. Welcome to the Pilot Field for today’s Boxing Day Bostik League Division One South East match against Sevenoaks Town FC. We extend a warm welcome to the officials, players and supporters of our Kent based visitors. We hope they have an enjoyable afternoon, and wish them a safe return trip, but hopefully without any points from the contest. A similar warm welcome is extended to the three match officials, Referee Simon Finnigan and his two Assistants, Richard Joss and Jak Hill. We return to Pilot Field action this afternoon after an excellent 2-1 second-half fightback win here 11 days ago against VCD Athletic. Well done to all the boys for battling back from a half-time deficit to win over, not just the opposition, but the awful weather conditions too. Tom Climpson picked up the ‘Man of the Match’ award for his performance and match-winning goal. Today’s visitors currently sit in 10th position in the league table with 21 points from 16 matches. The Oaks suffered their heaviest league defeat on 15th December, 4-1 away at the hands of Sittingbourne. A full listing of their Bostik League results for this season to date can be found on the centre pages. Within the Oaks current squad are a number of ex-U’s boys, two with considerable goalscoring records are experienced strikers, Kenny Pogue and Frankie Sawyer welcome back to the Pilot Field boys. Kenny of course scored both opposition goals in the early season 3-2 U’s win at Greatness Park Stadium. This fixture was played out in front of a crowd of 262, the largest attendance for a Sevenoaks home fixture so far this season. Thank you for your support this afternoon and indeed for all the fantastic support you have given the U’s throughout 2018 and hope you enjoy today’s Boxing Day clash ... MANAGER’S NOTES Good afternoon everyone. Firstly MERRY CHRISTMAS to everyone ..... it’ll be a little late by the time you read this but better late than never! I hope all of our fantastic support throughly enjoy the Christmas period (which I know will be aided by 3 points)! Today we welcome to the Pilot Field Micky Collins and his Sevenoaks Town side which as we all know includes a number of ex-Utd players including the one and only Kenny Pogue ...... ’Kenny Pogue, Kenny Pogue, Kenny Keeeeenny Pogue’ ........ what a top, top, top man Kenny is, a proper team player ..... humble, hardworking and a consistent goalscorer over a number of years ...... I can’t speak highly enough of Ken, and me being honest, I was really emotional when he left the Club earlier in the year - only myself, staff and players can appreciate what a huge influence Ken had on our climb from 21st to touching the play-offs last season ...... he will be getting the warmest of receptions from myself, staff and players (before the game) ...... and I’m sure the U’s faithful will more than assist in giving Ken a warm welcome home. We go into the game looking for another home win and aiming to build on the multitude of positives which came out of last Saturday’s 2-1 win against VCD Athletic ...... the most blatant ‘penalty non-penalty’ aside I thought it was a very good day at the office, which included two impressive debuts from Ollie Black and Jordy Mongoy, as well as standouts performances from Dicko, Trigger (Jamie Fielding) and Sam Cruttwell ..... a great TEAM performance which put our indifferent form behind us - MORE OF THE SAME TODAY PLEASE!!

GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart A light hearted and serious look at football (not necessarily just football) at all levels, those who play, those who administrate and those of us who follow our various teams in this vast, lop sided pyramid of the game. At all times, views expressed are mine.

SEASON DEFINING? Probably not – but credit where it's due and absolutely slap the boys on their collective backs for an outstanding display as Storm Deidre (Deidre – really? REALLY?) and VCD Athletic did their best to ensure United's poor run of form went on as four successive defeats looked like turning into five with VCD leading at the interval, as they had done in the early season FA Cup fixture here. A rejigged side battered by injuries and suspensions found that first 45 minutes difficult but the half time opinions offered by the boss certainly did the business as a tremendous second half saw things turned right round and the winless sequence of 6 games (plus the bonus of losing the Thamesmead points and the goal difference), ended with three points. At the end of the season - well for a lot longer than that, supporters who were at the FA Cup game at Leiston where eight United men held on for a never to be forgotten 4-3 win will point at that game as the summit – but that VCD game just under a fortnight ago was just as good an effort. The team was first class and credit is also due to our groundsman who's efforts ensured the pitch held up to everything an appalling afternoon's weather chucked at it. Teams in the best of form usually endure hiccups – and we have certainly had our share of that disorder in a month to largely forget. But the 15th saw Cray lose for the first time to a hugely improved Horsham who swiftly got over their defeat at Three Bridges. Hythe are having an indifferent run too with three successive defeats while Ashford are doing a Horsham with an outstanding run of form – and guess where we go on New Years Day! That should be good for 750 – 800 through the gates at Homelands. Whatever – we needed that win against VCD – well done all.

RACISM It's reared it's ugly head again in recent weeks which is hugely disappointing. Which is a great shame given that Football has more than played it's part in seeing a lot of this dealt with. Look at the integration here – look at the mix of backgrounds – look at the goal celebrations when they all pile into each other regardless of who got the goal. I see and hear no racist undertones amongst the United support when it comes to opposing sides. How daft is it – let alone plain wrong – to give a black player stick because you don't like his colour when you have black players in your own side? Selective racism? None of it makes any sense. I remember when Carlton Wynter came here from Ashford – must be 30 seasons ago. A black lad playing for Hastings Town – unheard of! And in those days, you did see and hear racist undertones here from amongst the supporters. Not much, not many people – but it was there. But that is in the history books and everywhere I go following United, I don't see any evidence of racism as it used to be.

GHOST – TO REVIVE OR NOT TO REVIVE Oh what to do? It's 24 seasons back that I was appointed editor in chief of the Hastings Town fanzine – Ghost of United as it was then known. Issue 6 was my first effort with the first five zines being put together by Steve Weekes and Dave Moore. I kept it going with assistance from various people who helped out with articles, passed on jokes and stories most of which can never appear in this family orientated column – it carried on with some name changes to reflect what was going on here up until 2003 by which time Karl Horton and I got an on line version going. Basically, Karl did all the tech stuff plus the odd article, while I did most of the written splurge – and it was getting better all the time. The ultimate compliment came from one of our most well known players of years past when he informed me he kept a supply of Ghosts in the smallest room in the house to while away the time. Ahhhh – that glow of pride! Praise indeed!

Kenny Pogue and Frankie Sawyer will presumably be here today in Sevenoaks colours. Kenny got both Sevenoaks goals at their place back in August. I often wonder how he might do linking up with the creative lads we have. Photo relates to Kenny's hat-trick against Guernsey a few seasons back. Every now and again I find something from an old zine and put it on Twitter. The latest Ghost snippet to get Tweeted was about the Severn Toll – a hefty £8.10 to get the United supporters' minibus into Wales for a Southern Premier Division game at Merthyr Tydfil. 480 miles there and back, 8 quid lighter and we lost 1-0. Way back in 1998-1999 that was – the season when the 5 year plan to get us into the Football League saw us heading the opposite way via the Southern League's rulebook back into the Eastern Division despite a 5th place finish. GAFFER That would be Chris Agutter. Curiosity made me Google “Gaffer”. Currently it refers to someone who looks after electrical stuff on film sets but it goes way back 300 years plus and was a term of respect for an older gentleman. There you go, Chris.

SEVENOAKS TOWN FC Sevenoaks Town Football Club was established 1883. The club is a FA Charter Standard Community Club and one of the largest clubs in the south east. On 26th April 1883 Sevenoaks Town played Royal Arsenal, at the time the only professional team in the South of England. Over 1000 spectators watched the game with all the proceeds from the match donated to two local hospitals. In 1900/01 Sevenoaks Town won the Sevenoaks Charity Cup for the first team. They won the cup again in 1904/05 and 1905/06. In 1906 Sevenoaks Town became one of the founder members of the current Sevenoaks & District League. In 1951 Sevenoaks Town amalgamated with local team, St John's United and became members of the Kent Amateur League. In 1965/66 the club won the Division One League Cup and in 1968/69 and 1975/76 where crowned champions of the Premier Division. In 1984 the Western and Eastern regions of the Kent Amateur League merged to become the Kent County Football League.

Sevenoaks Town won the Premier League in its first season and again in 1995/96 and 2002/03. Other trophies won include Intermediate Challenge Cup twice, Inter-Regional Cup twice, Kent Junior Cup three times and Sevenoaks Charity Cup twelve times. In 2003/04 the club started to make considerable ground improvements including changing rooms and the installation of floodlights. The club now runs junior teams from U7's to U18's competing across a variety of local and regional leagues accommodating players of all abilities; this includes the Kent Girls and Ladies Football League, the Crowborough and District Junior Football League, the Tandridge Youth League, Maidstone Invicta Primary League and the Kent Youth League. The club also runs a popular Saturday Morning Skills School for players up to the age of eleven. The senior section of the club runs seven teams; the first team play in the Bostik South East Football League, the reserve team play in the Suburban League and the two veterans teams play in the Southern Veterans League, the Powerchair teams play in the National and Regional Leagues, the Ladies team plays in the South East Counties Womens League. 21

ON THIS DAY A look back at some of the matches played in past seasons on: Wednesday, 26th December.

1962 This was the first weekend that fixtures were seriously affected by the weather in what was to be the coldest winter since 1740. The ice rink conditions partially accounted for the glut of goals that accrued in the matches that did go ahead. In Division One that was just three games, Tottenham closing the gap on leaders Everton with the 5-0 defeat of Ipswich Town, Jimmy Greaves leading the scoring with a hat trick. Leicester City also scored five and moved up to third with the 5-1 defeat of basement side Leyton Orient. In the other match a Bobby Charlton goal was enough for mid-table Manchester United to win 1-0 at second bottom Fulham. Division Two leaders Chelsea won 2-0 at Luton Town but second placed Sunderland were beaten 0-1 at home by Bury. Division Three leaders Peterborough went down 0-3 at home to Coventry City whilst three of the bottom four all won basement side Carlisle United beating Watford 2-1 whilst second bottom Crystal Palace defeated Millwall 3-0. Twenty-first Brighton won 2-1 at mid-table Bristol City. Division Four leaders Oldham Athletic put eleven past Southport without reply, Bert Lister netting six goals.

We, then Hastings & St. Leonards in Division Two of the Sussex County League, did not play this day and, in fact, did not play another competitive game until 9th March. The original Hastings United travelled to Sittingbourne in Division One of the Southern League where Joe White bagged a brace as they won 3-1.

1979 Liverpool replaced Manchester United at the top of Division One after winning 2-0 with goals from Alan Hansen and David Johnson. Arsenal won the north London derby with Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 to confirm their third place while Brighton moved up two places to nineteenth after beating mid-table Crystal Palace 3-0 in their first ever top tier meeting, their goals scored by Brian Horton (penalty), Gerry Ryan and Peter Ward. Burnley moved off the bottom of Division Two by beating leaders Newcastle United 3-2, Chelsea going top with a 1-0 win against Leicester City. In the game subsequently known as the Boxing Day Massacre, the Sheffield derby saw Division Three leaders United beaten 0-4 at Wednesday before a record crowd of 49,390, Terry Carran scoring twice. Walsall went above Portsmouth at the top of Division Four after Pompey were held 0-0 at Hereford United while the Saddlers defeated Doncaster Rovers 3-1.

We, then still Hastings Town, entertained Albion United (now Little Common) at The Firs where we won 2-0 with goals from Colin Spray and Gary Wilkins. The original Hastings United travelled to Addlestone in the South Division of the Southern League where they won 2-0 with goals from Ernie Batten and Matt Stock.

2007 Arsenal and Manchester United exchanged placed at the top of the Barclays Premiership after the Gunners were held 0-0 at Portsmouth while United were winning 4-0 at second bottom Sunderland, Louis Saha netting twice. Third placed Chelsea lost ground being held 4-4 by Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge. Tottenham Hotspur top scored beating Fulham 5-1 with Tom Huddlestone and Robbie Keane both bagging a brace of goals. In the Coca Cola Championship W.B.A. took over the leadership on goal difference after they defeated Bristol City 4-1 to replace Watford who were held 2-2 at home by Cardiff City. In Division One Swansea City took over the leadership after defeating Cheltenham Town 4-1 replacing Nottingham Forest who were held 0-0 at Oldham Athletic. Third placed Leeds United drew 1-1 at Hartlepool United while mid-table Brighton lost 0-3 at lowly Millwall. Division Two leaders M.K. Dons won 2-1 at Notts. County while Mansfield Town moved off the bottom of the table with a 2-0 victory over second placed Peterborough, Hereford replacing them after winning 1-0 at Macclesfield Town.

We lost 0-1 at Folkestone Invicta in the Premier Division of the Ryman Isthmian League.
