WELCOME Good afternoon and Happy New Year to you all. Welcome to the Pilot Field for today’s Bostik League Division One South East match against Kent based, Sittingbourne FC.

RECENT BOSTIK TRANSFER NEWS Hythe Town have signed centre-back Ollie Rowe from Bostik League South East rivals Ashford United. Rowe joined the Nuts & Bolts in May and made 17 appearances.

We extend a warm welcome to the officials, players and supporters of our visitors. We hope they have an enjoyable afternoon, and wish them a safe return trip, but hopefully ‘pointless’ from the contest. A similar warm welcome is extended to the three match officials, Referee John Pike and his two Assistants, Will Briers and Christopher Britton. We return to Pilot Field action this afternoon after backto-back clean sheet wins over Sevenoaks Town on Boxing Day with ‘Man of the Match’ Sam Cruttwell scoring the only goal and a great 2-0 away win over in form Ashford United on New Year’s Day. Both matches were played out in front of very respectable crowds of 557 and 531 respectively, with somewhere around one hundred U’s fans travelling over to Ashford to see a tremendous all-round team performance from the boys! Jack Dixon and Daniel Ajakaiye netting goals either side of the halftime interval. Brilliant way to start the New Year! Today’s visitors currently sit in 16th position in the league table with 17 points from 17 matches. Sittingbourne have only recorded one win in the last six league outings, a home 4-1 victory over Sevenoaks Town on December 15th, the other five being defeats. Playing most recently on 29th December they lost 3-2 at home to Herne Bay despite taking a two-goal lead within 12 minutes. That record places them bottom of the form guide for six matches. A full listing of their Bostik League results for this season to date can be found on the centre pages. Thank you for your support this afternoon and indeed for all the tremendous vocal support and encouragement, home and away, you gave the U’s throughout last year. Win it boys and put more pressure on Cray Wanderers! ... COYU’s ... #ambition #promotion2019 Once again, Happy New Year everyone.

MANAGER’S NOTES Good afternoon everyone. Happy New Year to everyone that wasn’t able to make our 2019 opener away to Ashford Utd ..... better late than never and I wish all our positive support all the very best! Today we welcome Aslan Odev and Ian Varley’s Sittingbourne to the Pilot Field always strong and competitive who’s low league position doesn’t reflect their quality and organisation, today will be tough! However, we come into today’s game very confident off the back of arguably our most ‘complete’ performance of the season away to Ashford Utd, a 2-0 scoreline which could have been 4 or 5 had we been a touch more ruthless in front of goal.

Chris Agutter

... HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone ... as we aim to make it four wins on the spin and three consecutive clean sheets ...

We have now put a bit of distance between ourselves and 3rd place whilst keeping in contact with league leaders Cray Wanderers, now we just need to maintain our current form - continue to work hard, be honest and humble in our performances and I’m sure we will be there or thereabouts come April-May ..... ensuring that we look no further than today as we aim to make it four wins on the spin and three consecutive clean sheets.

GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart A light hearted and serious look at football (not necessarily just football) at all levels, those who play, those who administrate and those of us who follow our various teams in this vast, lop sided pyramid of the game. At all times, views expressed are mine.

WELL THAT WAS OK THEN..... What a good performance at Homelands – what a way to see in the New Year as United saw off an Ashford side that had been on a tremendous run with 5 wins and a draw in the 6 games leading up to that encounter. Our boys had shown on three occasions earlier in the season – FA Cup games against Kingstonian, Leiston and Hitchin - they were more than capable of mixing it with decent sides, these three all being from step 3. Yet in Bostik SE games against other sides in the mid season promotion mix, results had been disappointing. Which made New Years Day's effort just over the county border a highly creditable one. A decent attendance of 531 – rather less I must say than I predicted – helped create a good atmosphere that was sullied a little late in proceedings when two home players were red carded. The game was already emphatically won by that late stage.

Hmmm, Golding on loan to Lewes and now Walker-Barth on loan at Old Trafford .......

He's back!

We had the rather bizzare Man of the Match award to Crutts in the Sevenoaks game – MoM awards don't usually go to someone who plays 35 minutes or so. Great to see Crutts do a 90 minute shift, equally good to welcome Daniel back after the appalling play acting that saw him sent off against East Grinstead (and the subsequent sidelining for three games) and well done Jordy Mongoy who looks better and better. MoM award for New Years Day – hmmm, I'd split it amongst the lot of em, a fine team effort. In a season of few clean sheets, the Ashford result followed the shut out against Sevenoaks – just the second time this season we've seen consecutive blanks at The Horlock End. More please.

You've been Tweeted Mr and Mrs G!

Sittingbourne and Hastings Town went through it around the same time together loadsa money only for it all to disappear. This light hearted squint at Central Park appeared in the Town fanzine way back in 1996.

CRAY ON THE WAY

CLAUDIO'S BACK

They aren't doing too shabbily are they? They seem to have recovered from seeing their unbeaten run finally ended as it was recently at Horsham who just when they threaten to go on a really good run, end up derailing themselves. Guernsey are a bottom half outfit again this season yet managed to grab a point from a 1-1 draw at Horsham in the only other Bostik SE game that took place on New Years Day. The latest round of games was spread over last Saturday and New Year's Day – there are plenty of 3 pm slots but what with the FA's step 4 shufflefest, there aren't enough teams to fill them.

If you watched Match of the Day whatever day it was Fulham beat Huddersfield with an even later goal than Cray's at Sevenoaks you cannot fail to have seen Ranieri spitting Italian nails over the Kamara/Mitrovic penalty taking controversy which saw him saying “I want to kill him – it's normal” in his post match interview. Only Ranieri......

But Cray are going well and surprised nobody with it being an 88th minute goal that won their game at Sevenoaks last weekend. East Grinstead and Three Bridges did us favours by holding Haywards Heath and beating Whyteleafe respectively. And all of a sudden what was a very congested 2nd to 6th sees United five points clear. Not that you can draw any conclusions from that – as quickly a gap can open, so it can close.

WE PARK WHERE WE LIKE! The U's away support choristers were in good form when various car owners were asked to move their vehicles from where they shouldn't have left them on Tuesday - “We park where we like, we park where we like – we're Hastings United – we park where we like”......... Hilarious.

SITTINGBOURNE ... Are here this afternoon. They did the double over us last season and have proved down the years right back to our Southern League Premier encounters 20 odd years ago to be the most stubborn and difficult to beat opponents. I recall we went through a phase of several seasons where they had the hold over Hastings Town at the same we struggled to beat Crawley. It got to the stage where you could bet your bottom dollar it would be a draw here and we'd lose at Central Park. The Central Park hoodoo was dealt with in 2000-2001 when Hastings Town went there and won 5-1 in front of 212 punters – goals from Duncan McArthur 2, Danny Simmonds, Paul Jones and Stuart Myall. The home game later that season as Town ended up not quite the finished promotion article, a 1-1 draw watched by 293, the goal from Myallie again. But last season wasn't good. I shall be following proceedings from work and hope very much things go much better this afternoon.

HISTORY

The club was started as Sittingbourne United back in 1881. In 1886 it became Sittingbourne Football Club and played at the Bull Ground in the centre of town. 1892 the club gained senior status.

SITTINGBOURNE FC More money flowed in with the £21,000 sale of Neil Emblen and Mickey Harle to MilIwall before the bubble spectacularly burst. Debts of more than £1 million were revealed, the team got relegated, the ground was closed for a while despite the intervention of the local council in taking it over, and the club was officially wound up.

The club won its first major title in 1897/98 when it won the Kent League. The Kent Senior Cup followed in 1902.

Somehow Sittingbourne have survived it all and even got back to the Southern Premier Division during this traumatic time (in Steve Lovell’s first spell as manager), finishing an equal highest ever eighth before the financial problems again began to bite and relegation followed.

After the First World War more senior cup and league titles followed with the club also enjoying the first of three spells in the Southern League. Success followed and in another spell in the Southern League Sittingbourne twice in succession missed promotion to the Premier Division only on goal average.

A new management committee headed by Andy Spice made great strides in tackling the debt problem and getting Sittingbourne Football Club back on an even keel financially. To ensure survival of the club, the decision was made to move out of the imposing main stadium and move to another pitch on the complex.

The club reached the first-round proper of the F.A Cup in 1962 but lost 3-0 at Hinckley Athletic. Back in the Kent League Sittingbourne were one of the strongest teams throughout the 1970s and 1980s in an era - unlike the one that followed, when what happened on the field got more attention than what went on off it! In February 1990, the club decided to sell its town centre Bull Ground (now Sainsbury's supermarket) and buy a 23-acre site on the town's Eurolink estate.

Because of the FA reorganising the leagues Sittingbourne faced a brand new challenge playing a number of “unknown” teams in the Ryman Isthmian League for season 2006-2007.

A magnificent stadium with a 2,000 seater stand, restaurants, bars, sumptuous dressing rooms, greyhound track and training pitches was the envy of non-league football. There was success too, on the pitch when, in their first season at Central Park, Sittingbourne won the Winstonlead Kent League without losing a game - the only senior football team throughout Europe to achieve that feat in the 1990/91 season. Promotion to the Beazer Homes Southern League followed with the championship of the Southern Division secured in 1993 followed by promotion to highest level achieved by the club since it's foundation in 1891. The ground record was broken five times during that one season with 5,951 spectators watching a friendly with Spurs and more than 3,000 at the match with local rivals Gravesend - a Beazer Homes Southern record.

20

The 2009-10 season, was one of the best since the financial problems, Sittingbourne being in play-off contention for much of the time but failing at the end. Still, a 9th place finish was no disgrace and for the first time in 50 years, Sittingbourne won the Kent Senior Cup in front of 618 at Folkestone Invicta. For the 2013-2014 season, Sittingbourne decided to leave their home of 10 years and accept an invitation to move to Woodstock Park a 14-acre area with superb social facilities. Andy Spice, who almost single handedly kept Sittingbourne as a senior club, stood down as Chairman making way for Maurice Dunk, a Director of the company that holds the leasehold for Woodstock Park. After a three year reign as manager, Nick Davis resigned in February 2018 after the committee decided a budget cut was necessary when it became clear that Sittingbourne would be unlikely to challenge for the play-offs. Coach, Aslan Odev, was given the task of preparing Sittingbourne for the challenges that the 2018-19 season will bring. Aslan appointed ex Brickie, Ian Varley as his Assistant manager.

ROBERT LOFTING (Defender)

LEX ALLAN (Defender) 6’ 7” Lex was spotted playing in local football and offered a trial with Sittingbourne. It soon became clear that he had great potential. This potential has been spotted by a number of scouts and Lex was invited to play in trial matches and he has not looked out of place in the company of more experienced players.

BEN FITCHETT (Defender) Ben signed for Sittingbourne from Margate at the beginning of September. He came to prominence at Margate after playing a key role in their development side winning their championship. He joined Margate after impressing at SCEL Erith Town. Made his Sittingbourne debut in a 2-0 Velocity Trophy win in September 2018. He scored on his debut.

DAN PARKINSON (Midfielder) Experienced player who came through the Morecambe youth academy to sign a one-year contract for the 2011–12 season for the League two club. He then signed for Barrow of the Conference North. He also played on loan at Colwyn Bay and Vauxhall Motors before moving South and playing for Maidstone United (alongside his brother Jack) and Tonbridge Angels. Dan originally joined Sittingbourne for the 2017-18 season but a knee injury put him out for most of that season. Got back to full fitness last season and is an important part of the team.

LEWIS CHAMBERS (Midfielder) Lewis is another to sign for then new manager, Aslan, in March 2018. He impressed right from his first game for the club. He has played for Maidstone United youth. Another to have a long throw.

BOLA DAWODU (Forward) Joined Sittingbourne for the first time at the beginning of last season. Previous to that he played for Faversham Town and Whitstable Town. Midway through last season he decided to re-join Faversham Town. All at the club were pleased that he decided to sign for the Brickies again this season.

TOMMIE FAGG (Forward) Another graduate from the Soccer Elite Football Academy, and Ashford United. The tall striker then signed Harlow Town in February 2016 to bolster the attack, making six appearances for the Hawks in the Isthmian Premier Division. He signed for the Brickies at the beginning of this season.

GIL CARVALHO (Forward) Gil loves nothing more than tearing down the wing and taking on players. Something he does very successfully. Gil came through the youth set up at Tonbridge Angels and played a few times for them. However, he drifted into junior football where he was spotted by one of our former players who recommended him to Sittingbourne. After his first season with us he left to join Phoenix Sports. Sittingbourne signed him for his second spell with us from Corinthian Casuals in November 2018. NATHAN ELDER (Forward/Coach) Nathan signed for The Brickies at the end of August 2018, coming on as a substitute in the Kent Senior Cup tie at Tonbridge Angels. Nathan is a very experienced player having over 100 league appearances with Brighton & Hove Albion, Brentford, Shrewsbury and Hereford United. Locally he has played for Maidstone United, Ebbsfleet, and Tonbridge Angels where he made 111 appearances and scored 50 goals.

United player-manager at the time Sean Ray commented after the match: "Seeing how happy our supporters were at the end is a memory I will savour for the rest of my life. I'm so pleased we were able to get a goal. .... I thought were a bit overawed in the first half but we started to relax more and caused them one or two problems."

ON THIS DAY A look back at some of the matches played in past seasons on: Saturday, 5th January.

1957 The full programme of thirty-two third round F.A. Cup ties took place of which twelve were drawn. Two non-league clubs had made it to this stage and, ironically, both had to visit Nottingham: Rhyl went to Notts. County where they won 3-1 while Goole Town were soundly beaten 0-6 at Forest.. Nonetheless that was not the day’s top score as Burnley progressed after putting seven past Chesterfield without reply and the highest aggregate score was 5-3 recorded as Wolves defeated Swansea Town and West Ham United beat Grimsby Town. Shock result of the day came at Roots hall where Southend United defeated Liverpool 2-1. In Division Three (South) mid-table Brighton defeated bottom side Swindon Town 2-0 at the Goldstone. In the Northern Section Derby County took over top spot after they won 5-2 at Crewe Alexandra and Bradford City lost 1-3 at York City.

We, then Hastings & St. Leonards, visited Cuckfield in Division Two of the Sussex County League where we drew 1-1 with a Fred Crouch goal. The original Hastings United lost 0-2 away to Bedford Town in the then single division Southern League.

1985 It was the beginning of the winter’s cold snap but most of the ties went ahead in the third round of the F.A. Cup: On this occasion it was just Brighton from Sussex that had made it and they progressed with a 1-0 home win over Hull City. Pitch conditions seemed to contribute to some results with a few odd score lines including Gola Conference League side Telford United defeating third division Bradford City 2-1. First Division leaders Tottenham Hotspur were held 1-1 at home by second division Charlton Athletic while North London rivals Arsenal had an identical result at fourth division Hereford United: Third division Millwall also shared two goals with Crystal Palace. Meanwhile Leicester City’s 6-1 victory away to then Northern Premier League side Burton Albion, played at Derby’s Baseball Ground, was later declared void after it was proved that the Brewers goalkeeper had been hit and concussed by a missile thrown by a spectator. Top score of the day was at Vicarage Road where Watford beat Sheffield United 5-0 with Luther Blissett netting four goals.

Due to the bad weather we, then Hastings & St. Leonards, suffered our third consecutive postponement in Division One of the Sussex County League when our match versus Horsham YMCA to be played at The Firs was called off and in fact we did not play again for another three weeks. The original Hastings United suffered a similar fate.

2013 Teams from the Premiership and Championship entered the Budweiser F.A. Cup at the third round stage this weekend where Brighton joined two other Sussex sides however; it was only they that progressed; the Championship side defeating Premiership Newcastle United 2-0 at the Amex Stadium with goals from Andrea Orlandi and Will Hoskins. Division One Crawley Town went out after going down 1-3 at home to Championship outfit Reading despite Nicky Adams having scored the opening goal for them in the first minute. Of course our other representative was us and we were the lowest level side left in the competition, however, we bowed out going down 1-4 at Championship Middlesbrough. However, it was not a totally bad day for non-league sides as two Conference sides knocked out Championship teams, an Alex Lawless goal being enough for Luton Town to knock out Wolves while a brace from Matt Barnes-Horner saw Macclesfield Town come from behind to defeat Cardiff City 2-1. In an all Premiership tie Chelsea came back from being behind at Southampton to win 5-1 with Demba Barr bagging a brace.

As noted earlier we travelled to Middlesbrough where we were watched by 12,579 at the Riverside stadium and in going down 1-4 our consolation goal was scored twenty minutes from time by Bradley Goldburg.
