We return to Pilot Field action this afternoon after an emphatic 5-0 victory over Sittingbourne and a 3-3 away draw, last Saturday, at Phoenix Sports. Following last Saturday’s match on social media was not good for my blood pressure! 2-0 down after just 11 minutes! That scoreline remained until HT. I don’t know what Chris said during his interval team talk but it worked. A 69th minute goal from Jack Dixon followed by two from Jordy Mongoy at 74 and 87 minutes put us in the lead and I thought ... ‘job done’ ... 3 very valuable points! But no, an added time pen allowed Alex Teniola to square things for the hosts. A few heated expletives vented at the outcome and I daren’t think what my blood pressure readings would have been! ... However, in reality, all credit to Chris and the boys for having the character to put us in a winning position after such an early 2-goal setback. Today’s visitors currently sit in the play-off places, at 5th position in the league table, with 35 points from 20 matches. The Leafe suffered their first defeat of 2019 last Saturday when they travelled to fellow play-off contenders, Horsham FC. The points were collected by Horsham after Tyrell Richardson-Brown netted the only goal of the game in the 80th minute. A listing of Whyteleafe’s last twelve Bostik League results can be found on the centre pages. Thank you for your support this afternoon. Win it boys! ... COYU’s ... #ambition #promotion2019

MANAGER’S NOTES Good afternoon everyone. Welcome to the Pilot Field to all our visitors today including the staff, players and Club officials from Whyteleafe - we hope you have a safe journey down to the coast this afternoon.

Chris Agutter

... 16 games to go - one thing is guaranteed, it won’t be dull!! ...

Last weekends away visit served up a real mixture of emotions ...... at 0-0 we expect to win, at 0-2 you’d take a point, at 3-2 we expect to take all three, then at 3-3 your disappointed to take a point ...... However, taking the emotion out of the match evaluation, I know that these experiences are invaluable for all our development. This young group of players never gives up and has consistently shown superb fighting spirit WE NEVER LOSE, WE JUST SOMETIMES RUN OUT OF TIME! In Whyteleafe we face, in my opinion, the best and most organised side that we have faced this season, Harry Hudson and Calum MacFarlene are superb coaches who have got their team riding high in the league. For us to add to our points tally today we are going to have to bring our best, and then some, as to date Whyteleafe have had our number!!! As always I look forward to hearing our positive support getting behind the team as we now fast approach the end of season run in .... 16 games to go - one thing is guaranteed, it won’t be dull!!

GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart A light hearted and serious look at football (not necessarily just football) at all levels, those who play, those who administrate and those of us who follow our various teams in this vast, lop sided pyramid of the game. At all times, views expressed are mine.

DOWNS AND UPS AT PHOENIX SPORTS Wow. That was a game and a half last weekend. I had to follow proceedings from work where the shift patterns now prevent me getting to three, sometimes four consecutive Saturday games. But things have improved hugely in recent years and media coverage of the semi pro game is far far better. The Footballwebpages site continues to be my media of choice alongside Twitter. Hmmm Twitter. It's invaluable but am I the only one that picks up the United updates at some bizzarely out of sequence intervals? I'm sure Twitter has advised me, on at least one occasion, that the U's have kicked-off – a full day later! Anyway – Pat McCrossan does his bit on Twitter, Footballwebpages is pretty good, Scott White's excellent photos are up in quick time as are Simon Newstead's Observer match reports, so keeping up-to-date from afar is not a problem. Compared to the carry a ton of loose change for the payphone Beazer Homes ClubCall Line of the mid late 90s and the dulcid tones of one R A Cosens for Hastings Town match reports – things have moved on and I was able to keep my Premier League obsessed colleagues loudly up-to-date with United's progress. Let's just say that their reactions to MY reaction to the late Phoenix Sports equaliser cannot be reproduced in this publication.

Keith Gillespie. Top bloke. KEITH GILLESPIE Remember him? My recollections are mostly of him in his Newcastle days. And he's been retired a while now and appeared on an outstanding Sky Sports programme the other evening – Premier League World - in which he did a solo presentation on what he went through with his gambling addictions that cost him millions in his playing days. One unbelievable comment he made was about Darren Peacocke scoring a late goal for Newcastle (Gillespie was on the pitch himself) at Tottenham which cost him a £52000 pay out on the bet he'd made on the result. Never any ANY question of match fixing – I must make that clear – Gillespie came across as a thoroughly decent bloke who was to eventually emerge from all sorts of post retirement downers – in pretty good nick. And as a football agent he's helping the young talent of today avoid the pitfalls. Good luck to him – and if you can find that programme in Catch up or whatever, watch it.

Great comeback though and hearing of Jordy's two goals certainly makes it sound that quite a partnership with Daniel is being forged. United are now the league's leading scorers and while it's a shame that they didn't return with three points, a draw was surely more than what most would've expected after going two down so early.

ANOTHER DAY ANOTHER COMEBACK They've been clawing back deficits from day one of the season when the now defunct Thamesmead took the lead here back in August. If I remember correctly, that's ten games where United have had to battle back from behind to get something, indeed that was to feature in the first four matches! And last weekend was here we go again as they came so close to turning 2-0 down after 11 minutes into a winning performance.

From two down!

And you thought Brexit was hard to fathom! PPG The more I look at the FA restructuring of the semi-pro game at steps 3 and 4 – the more I wonder if the same people are presiding over the shambolic EU goings on of the last two years. Or vice versa. Is Boris Johnson behind the appalling play-off mishmash that will see promotion spots denied to two winning sides who, if I read this correctly, will go into their play-off games knowing they can't go up by that old fashioned method of winning football matches. Peter Miller, a follower of Brexit South Central – sorry, Bostik South Central - Ware Town does a very well cobbled together layout on the play-off issue and how clubs are currently doing in the seven divisions at step 4. United, of course, are in the mix and as can be seen, have moved right back up the PPG (Points per game) “inter league” on the back of their recent good form. In the space of a month their PPG has gone up from 2.000 to 2.105 and the U's are up to 4th. To give you an idea of how things would pan out based on Peter's spread sheet – if the season had ended on January 8th which is when his latest figures go to - in order to get five play off winning sides promoted, the PPG inter league throws up an additional complication in that the bottom two sides are both Northern Premier League East and that drags the third bottom placed club (Waltham Abbey of Bostik SC) into the equation. This would ensure that the five promoted sides went up from five different divisions. Last season we saw play off final losing CorinthianCasuals, er, promoted and this season – based on the FA's answer to Boris Johnson's play-off miasma – you could have the Northern Premier East play-off final contested by two sides who know neither of them can go up! Ummm - if you need any further clarification on the clear as mud issues raised here – feel free to ask – ANYONE except me!

8 men winning at Leiston - any takers? WHYTELEAFE

To be taken over 90 minutes on Saturday afternoons

Played two, lost two, is the story of our encounters with Whyteleafe this season. Given their current involvement at the top end of the table, that gives us even more incentive to get one over on our visitors this afternoon. Once again I shall have to follow proceedings from Three Bridges Signalling Centre.

THE VISITORS HISTORY FORMATIVE YEARS

WHYTELEAFE FC were built and in 1975 the club moved into the London Spartan League before joined the Athenian League in 1981. The main pitch floodlights were installed and the dressing rooms were moved to their current location in the early 1980s In the 1984/85 season, a league reorganisation saw the club enter Division Two South of the Isthmian League.

Prior to the Second World War there were several teams that competed locally using the Whyteleafe name, notably Whyteleafe Junior FC and Whyteleafe Albion. Whyteleafe Albion competed for many years but the club folded several years before the Second World War. A new club, simply called Whyteleafe FC, was formed in 1946.

In November 1986 Steve Kember joined the club as Manager having been associated with the club for some years previously when with Crystal Palace, with whom he had won considerable success. In two successive seasons Kember engineered the club through to the third qualifying round of the FA Cup on two occasions.

The new club commenced Junior football as members of the Caterham and Edenbridge, the Thornton Heath & District and the Croydon Leagues. Of these early years season 1951/52, was the most successful, with a strong 'Leafe line-up becoming Thornton Heath League champions, winners of two local charity cups and runners-up in both the Surrey County Junior Cup and the League Cup.

A highly successful team in 1988/89 saw the club win promotion as runners-up in Division Two South to Division One.

Two years later they progressed to the Surrey County Intermediate League (Eastern Division) and were Division 1 champions in 1955/6. 1958 saw the significant transition from 'Junior' to 'Senior' status and entry into the Surrey Senior League. This change required the club to move from the New Barn Lane School ground, which was inadequate for senior football, and with a dynamic committee under the leadership of Secretary Dick Baxendine, the club purchased approximately four acres of farmland in nearby Church Road, where the club still play today. The original stand at Whyteleafe's old ground is still used by Kenley Primary School and is clearly visible from Valley Road about half a mile north of the current ground.

NEW GROUND, NEW START

Steve Kember resigned in July 1993 and returned to Crystal Palace as a coach and after several successful and well-publicised stints as Caretaker Manager. Paul Hinshelwood briefly held the reins following Steve's departure and, following the resignation of his assistant Keith Wilkinson in October 1993, Lee Richardson became assistant manager and 1st team coach.

Play commenced on the new ground in season 1959/60, and in the early sixties the club gained minor rewards with the reserve team playing under the guidance of former Crystal Palace hero Roy Greenwood.

The next success came as the 1960s drew to a close which saw 'Leafe as Surrey Senior League Champions and runners-up in the League Cup. In the 1970s the floodlight training area and stand

THE RICHARDSON YEARS

steered themselves away from relegation.

August 1994 saw Richardson appointed manager. This was a very popular appointment, as Lee had been associated with the club on and off since 1975, playing in excess of 400 games for the club.

Nicky's hard work and commitment was never in doubt, but things just didn't work, and in the following year he left the club. In January 2012 Steve Griffin was given the tough job of catching up 20th placed side Burgess Hill Town when 12 point adrift.

Season 1998/99 proved to be very mixed, with the club achieving good cup results, losing to Welling Utd in sight of a first round visit to Bristol Rovers in the FA Cup, and winning through to the last 32 in the FA Trophy, going out to the eventual winners Kingstonian in front of a then record home crowd of 945. But a season of chronic injury saw 'Leafe struggle to survive in the league and avoided relegation by winning the last game of the season. 1999/2000 proved the most momentous in the club's history. For the first time ever the club reached the 1st Round proper of the FA Cup when a crowd of 2,164, easily beat the previous season's record, in a match which saw them hold league opponents Chester City to a 0-0 draw before going down 1-3 in a replay at Chester. An imposing new stand was built at the top end of the ground just in time for the big match thanks to a superb effort from all involved with the club. The years that followed never lived up to 1999 and the club went into a slow but steady decline in fortunes.

MANAGERIAL CHANGES In 2002 the team hit a low ebb at Bracknell at Christmas, where they suffered a heavy defeat that prompted Richardson's resignation. Stuart Massey held the reins until October 2006 and after a spell with chairman Mark Coote picking the team, former Crystal Palace striker Dave Swindlehurst joined the club in December. The team did reasonably well under Swindlehurst, he led them to a comfortable mid-table position and the club's first cup final in 20 years. Leafe lost their Surrey Senior Cup final to Merstham at Imber Court and this proved to be Swindlehurst last game in charge. Stuart Massey was re-appointed Whyteleafe manager ahead of the 2008/09 season but only for a relatively short spell.

ALL CHANGE AGAIN The winter of 2009/10 was hard one and bad weather hit hard on the club's finances. Massey resigned, former AFC Wimbledon and Chipstead manager Nicky English took over in the summer of 2010. Despite the dire financial position the club found itself in English’s team had a purple patch after Christmas 2010, which included a remarkable 5-4 victory at eventual champions Met Police, and

The appointment coincided with a change in club constitution which saw Mark Coote become ownerchairman (as opposed to elected-chairman). The change gives the Club renewed hope of future development and progression yet the 2011/12 season ended in bitter disappointment and the club’s first relegation in its history despite drawing level with Burgess Hill at one point and only losing to an extraordinary result by the Hillians against Dulwich Hamlet.

WHAT GOES DOWN... After a season of moderate success in the Kent League, and being badly injured in a car accident, in the summer of 2013 Griffin stood down and former Whyteleafe player and Croydon manager John Fowler joined the club. Fowler built a completely new team in a very short time and one that made an immediate impact. In a memorable season for the club, the team went on to win the newly named Southern Counties East League by a clear 11 points and amongst much celebration the team rejoined the Isthmian League of which they had been members for 28 of the preceding 30 years. The first year back in the Ryman League was also momentous and the team belied expectation finishing in fifth place only to lose out in a play-off match at Folkestone. Leafe truggled to repeat this achievement the following year and in 2016, John Fowler decided he had taken the team as far as he could and stood down. Former Farnborough assistant manager Leigh Dynan took over in October and began a period of major squad reconstruction. Leigh guided the club to 14th place having picked up 64 points along the way. Leigh Dynan started the 2017/2018 season in strong fashion boasting some impressive pre-season results against teams from the league above with emphatic wins coming against Merstham and Dulwich Hamlet. The league season started strongly also with the club only suffering only two defeats in our first twelve games. Leigh resigned in October 2017 after a 1-1 draw at Church Road against Greenwich Borough. Leigh left and took up the hot seat at Kingstonian Football Club. The management duo of John Scarborough and Paul Dale guided the club for the remainder of the 2017/2018 season finishing in 8th position and narrowly missing out on the Bostik South play-offs. John Scarborough and Paul Dale both stepped down in the summer of 2018 due to other commitments.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS WITH WHYTELEAFE FC Although the original Hastings United played Whyteleafe on a number of occasions our first meeting did not take place until season 1992/93 when we somewhat made up for lost time playing each other three times in the space of ten days as we strove to resolve an F.A. Trophy 1st Qualifying round tie drawing 2-2 at Church Road on Saturday, 19th September and then being held 1-1 after extra time in the replay here three days later. After winning the toss for choice of ground in the second replay, we replayed here again on Monday, 28th September, 1992 we ran 3-0 winners before a crowd of 416, our goals coming from Keith Miles (2) and Dean White. We then played a pre-season match at Whyteleafe on Tuesday, 29th July, 1997 when we won 4-2 with goals from Simon Fox (2), Liam Barham and Mark Browne. Our next and first league meeting took place at Whyteleafe on Tuesday, 14th September, 2004 in Division One of the Ryman League when we again ran out winners, this time 2-0 with goals from Chris Honey and Jon Wallis; however, we lost the return game here 1-2 on Saturday, 5th February, 2005 a crowd of 337 seeing Simon Rowland scoring our only goal. Overall, we played Whyteleafe in three consecutive seasons 2004/05 to 2006/07 in the Ryman League. In season 2014/15 we resumed our meetings and played P W D L GF GA Whyteleafe three times, United winning away in the first Away 5 2 1 2 7 6 qualifying round of the F.A. Cup with both league matches Home 4 3 1 0 10 3 being drawn. In the subsequent three seasons we met Overall 9 5 2 2 17 9 twice in the league in each campaign. Our overall record 25 from 2014/15, including last season being as follows:-

ON THIS DAY A look back at some of the matches played in past seasons on: Saturday, 19th January.

1957 Although there was no change at the top of Division One, it was a day of mixed fortunes for the leading sides: Table topping Manchester United lost 1-2 at mid-table Sheffield Wednesday while second placed Tottenham Hotspur moved closer after defeating Aston Villa 3-0 as third placed Arsenal went down 1-3 at Newcastle United. The following three sides all drew 0-0 as Wolves were held at Leeds United and Preston at W.B.A. Leicester city maintained their four point advantage at the top of Division Two after beating Bristol Rovers 7-2 with two goals apiece for Tom McDonald, Arthur Rowley and Billy Wright: Second placed Stoke City defeated Liverpool 1-0. Colchester United went to the top of Division Three (South) after they won 3-0 at Reading while Southampton were losing 1-2 at Northampton Town. Third placed Torquay United defeated Brighton 1-0. Northern Section leaders Hartlepool United went further ahead with a 4-1 win over Stockport County while second placed Derby County were held 3-3 at Hull City.

We, then Hastings & St. Leonards, again had no game this day in Division Two of the Sussex County League. The original Hastings United defeated Merthyr Tydfil 2-1 here in the then one division Southern League.

1980 Due to the weather less than half the day’s programme went ahead; nevertheless Division One leaders Liverpool lost 0-1 at Coventry City but stayed two points ahead of Manchester United who were not in action. Two goals in added time saw third placed Arsenal to a 2-0 win over Derby County, Liam Brady and Willie Young scoring. Southampton beat Manchester City while Brighton were beaten 0-2 at home by Tottenham Hotspur for whom Chris Houghton and Ricky Villa were on target. In Division Two leaders Newcastle United and Chelsea did not play with Leicester City going above Luton Town into third spot with a 1-0 win at Notts. County. Draws dominated in Division Three as leaders Sheffield United were held 1-1 at home by lowly Hull City and although they did not play Colchester United stayed second as Grimsby Town could only move level on points after drawing 1-1 at Plymouth Argyle. Nothing changed in Division Four with only two matches played.

We, then still Hastings Town, again had no game on this day, however, on this occasion it was due to The Firs pitch being unfit for our home game with Three Bridges in Division Two of the Sussex County League. The original Hastings United won 3-2 at Crawley Town in the Southern Division of the Southern League.

2008 There was no change at the top of the Barclaycard Premiership as leaders Manchester United won 2-0 at Reading with goals from Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo while second placed Arsenal went one better winning 3-0 at Fulham thanks to goals from Emmanuel Adebayor (2) and Tomas Rosicky. Third placed Chelsea edged past Birmingham City 1-0 with a late goal from Claudio Pizarro. Despite being held 3-3 at home by Cardiff City, W.B.A. retained the leadership of the Coca Cola Championship, however, below them second placed Bristol City dropped a place after they lost 0-2 at Crystal Palace, Watford returning to second spot albeit they were also held, drawing 1-1 with Charlton Athletic. Swansea City extended their advantage at the top of Division One when they defeated second bottom Port Vale 2-0; below them Nottingham Forest lost 1-2 at Swindon Town and were replaced by Carlisle United after a 1-0 win against Crewe Alexandra. Brighton were held 1-1 at hom by Huddersfield Town. There was a shock in Division Two where basement side Wrexham beat runaway leaders M K Dons1-0 while second placed Rotherham United were held 1-1 by fellow challengers.

We were in the Premier Division of the Ryman Isthmian League but had no game this day due to our scheduled opponents still being involved in the F.A. Trophy.
