MATCH SPONSOR

Ken Eason

Thanks to Ken Eason for sponsoring today’s match. Ken is Grandfather to Isobel and Evie Eason-Warner.

Isobel

Evie

Isobel and Evie Eason-Warner have both been practicing Taekwondo for a number of years. Izzy who is 16 started at the age of 3 and her younger sister Evie (14) started at the 6. They have both successfully competed for many years securing numerous medals and trophies both nationally and internationally. They have both won overall championship trophies (for winning more medals than any other competitor) at national events and both train in Hastings and Tonbridge every week. Isobel is the youngest member ever in her association to pass her black belt (she did this at the age of 12) and is will be grading for her 2nd degree later this year. Isobel was selected to represent England for the ITF Taekwon-Do National Team at 14. At her first international competition, The European Championship Izzy was the only member of the England team to be selected in all events – 8 in total – most competitors compete in a maximum of 2 or 3 events, and she managed to secure a bronze medal at her favourite event Sparring! Even more incredible when you realise that many of the girls she was up against were 17 or 18! Evie who passed her black belt in July last year, will be trailing to join the England team later this year. Isobel has been selected again for England and will be going to the World Championships in Germany in April this year. Once again she will be competing in all of the disciplines sparring, patterns, power (breaking boards) and special technique, doing these individually and in the team events. She has also been selected by all of the England coaches, to be the England Junior Girl Team captain. This is great honour for Izzy at just 16. She is currently studying Sports Science at Bexhill College, having successfully passed her GCSE’s at Claverham last year (and managed to compete alongside her studies!) She was also her House Deputy Head Girl in her final year! Evie is also at Claverham and takes her GCSE’s next year. Both girls are extremely dedicated students and cannot be faulted for their commitment and passion to sport. This includes having to make many social sacrifices in order to reach the highest levels and to train and compete! As teenagers they still have the same amount of focus and dedication and have not faltered in their commitment and in addition to their training they also help out teaching other children at Hastings on Thursday evenings.

Isobel and Evie Eason-Warner will present the ‘Man Of The Match’ award. 04

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ... Club Shop Manager Sue Gallop for today!

We extend a warm welcome to the officials, players and supporters of our visitors. We hope they have an enjoyable afternoon, and wish them a safe return trip. A similar warm welcome is extended to today’s three match officials, Referee Aji Ajibola and his two Assistants, Ciaran Fidler and Will Briers. We return to Pilot Field action this afternoon after a rather unexplainable home defeat to Haywards Heath Town a fortnight ago, but picking up maximum points in an eventful and emotional 2-0 away win over VCD Athletic last weekend which included new signing, Gary Elphick, at the heart of our defence. Welcome to the Club Gary. The half-time score at VCD was 0-0 with some great attacking football being played by the U’s. However at 69 minutes it was time for a change - up steps Davide Rodari who was making his return to senior action after recovering from a major injury. It was a fairytale return, Sam Cruttwell struck the underside of the bar from a 25yard free kick, Jordy moved the ball on from the rebound and Davide’s instinctive razor sharp strike hit the back of the net. Jubilation erupted! ... Jordy Mongoy, who had joined the action at 75 minutes, netted the second himself on 87 minutes to seal the win! Welcome back Davide. Today’s visitors have occupied top spot for over 24 weeks, amassing 71 points from 28 matches and are now 16 points ahead of 2nd placed Horsham. Conceding just 22 goals to this point and suffering just the one defeat, 4-2 away to Horsham on December 15. Mightily impressive.

Best wishes from all at the Club.

With the play-off places being separated by a margin of just 3 points today’s result is vitally important to secure one of the home play-off spots. All set then, for what should be a great game of football. Enjoy!

GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart A light hearted and serious look at football (not necessarily just football) at all levels, those who play, those who administrate and those of us who follow our various teams in this vast, lop sided pyramid of the game. At all times, views expressed are mine.

ROLL ON SUMMER Can't come soon enough. Get away from the death by a thousand added on minutes agony that is the football season. When Town and then United mark 2 are playing at step 4 – Doctor Martens League Eastern, Ryman South, Bostik South East – it's always been about promotion and the frustration/elation that goes with it. 5 pm on the Saturday sees that long countdown start to 3 pm the following Saturday, sweating on other results, wanting to put right what just went wrong or, much better, building on a successful 90 minutes. The other side of the coin – Town and United's seasons at step 3 which were mostly about retaining that hard won status. And it was hard won. 1985/86 saw Hastings Town kick off in the Beazer Homes Southern Division and it was with many of the United players from the defunct club that had gone under the previous summer. We missed out so narrowly on getting back to the Premier Division at the first attempt – and it was to be another 6 years before Peter Sillett got us there. Then it was the even harder graft to retain that Beazer Premier status.

Joe Knight's video of the goals at VCD can be found here on Twitter via this screen shot. The build up for Jordy's is a bit special too! Davide's goal? And what follows? Find the tweet and enjoy. Good work, Joe! That countdown on Saturday evening ....... My recollections take me back to the 2002/03 season – the tail end of a campaign when relegation loomed big time, then seemed to recede with successive home wins over Chippenham Town and Moor Green only for a winless run in to confirm that awful empty feeling. Much the same in the FA Cup run season when those distractions – hugely lucrative and great fun, but distractions all the same – saw United relegated to Ryman South. We all go through the ups and downs of life – the domestic issues, work, Monday to Friday stuff and then we really get the palpitations, the stress, the frustration, the elation – whatever WHATEVER level of football it might be, we really get it when the countdown gets us to 3 pm on a Saturday afternoon.

THE CRAY JIGSAW FALLS INTO PLACE

Centre stage at VCD that man Rodari. 16

It's all about those ingredients eh? Consistency, settled team, reliable defence, luck and other teams in the race for that promotion place not quite having all those ingredients falling into place. In recent years we've seen Folkestone Invicta and Burgess Hill walk away with the Ryman South title - this season it's this afternoon's opponents with just one defeat who are well clear at the top. Cray probably need another couple of wins to secure Bostik Premier football next season with the additional big bonus of knowing a new stadium is on the horizon. Take your hats off to Cray, one league defeat all season, they've got it emphatically right. All being well it'll be two league defeats all season at 5.00 pm!

YOU COULDN'T MAKE IT UP Well, we knew Davide Rodari was making good progress in his battle to regain fitness after the summer injury that deprived us of a striker who had been getting better and better as last season came to an end. A second half of U23 action - and don't forget that's the level he should be playing at anyway - the week before last, saw the start of the Rodari comeback with a place on the bench at VCD Athletic last weekend. What with United's dodgy run of results, a bumpy looking, action man sized pitch, a strong wind and opposition who were in with a shout of a play off place, that might have been a big ask. Far from it. Davide looked at home as soon as he came on and when, on 83 minutes, he hooked home the rebound from a Crutts cannon ball of a free kick .......... pandemonium. The dugout emptied and Davide was surrounded. Like it says, you couldn't make it up. Jordy's well taken effort to make it 2-0 was the icing on a delicious cake. All the more so given the delays on the M25 that saw many U's supporters miss much of the 1st half.

BOSTIK HEALTH WARNING This will be featured on Hastings United programmes from next season. You have been warned!

Trevor, a Hammers follower I work with who collects programmes. He now has a U's one. He sometimes takes colleagues to games, colleagues who support West Ham's opponents - and have to sit with him in the home stands. And have to endure the poke in the ribs when West Ham score or keep quiet if West Ham concede ......

Haywards Heath keeper earning his crust on a truly bizzare afternoon a fortnight back. Chris must have congratulated their boss through gritted teeth. Loch Ness Monster, Area 51 and the home defeat by Haywards Heath. True mysteries....... 17

CRAY WANDERERS FC HISTORY

Cray Wanderers have been in exile from the Cray’s since 1973 when they lost the Grassmeade ground in Chelsfield Road, due to housing development. They moved to Oxford Road, on the borders of Footscray and Sidcup, but when that ground was ruled to be unsuitable for Step 5 football (the Wands were then playing in the Kent League) it became necessary from 1998/99 to play first team matches at Hayes Lane, as tenants of Bromley FC. Cray Wanderers announced on 6 October 2014 an intention to purchase Flamingo Park, adjacent to the A20 Sidcup by-pass, subject to receiving planning permission from LB Bromley for a new sporting community hub. It would see the team play at a new multi-sport stadium. The first origins of Cray Wanderers are linked to the construction of the London, Chatham & Dover railway line during 1858 to 1860. During their leisure time, migrant workers kicked a ball around, and that is how the club originated in the St Mary Cray village. The pitch at Star Lane is now a cemetery, and is located beneath the ninearch railway viaduct that spans the Cray Valley. The industrial belt of the River Cray, especially the paper mills, provided much of the club's support up till the 1950s. Cray Wanderers were a strong force in senior county football at the turn of the century. After being Kent Junior Cup semifinalists and finalists in 1890/91 and 20

1891/92 they entered the first ever FA Amateur Cup competition in 1893/94. They had a spell as a professional club between 1895 and 1907. They were a nursery club for Woolwich Arsenal during part of this period. They were one of the founder members of the Kent League in 1894/95, and they won the championship in 1901/02. Other honours included Southern Suburban League champions in 1898/99, West Kent League champions in 1903/04, and Kent Senior Cup runners-up in 1899/1900. After World War One, Cray switched to the London League where they remained till 1934. In 1930/31 they won the Kent Amateur Cup. Cray rejoined the Kent League in 1934/35, but their four year stay came to grief when 1936 saw the loss of the Fordcroft ground in Cray Avenue, their home since 1898. Cray were forced to drop into a lower level of football, drifting from one temporary pitch to another while the club committee dwindled to a perilously small number. The team struggled badly in the South London Alliance and the Kent Amateur League. 1951/52 heralded a new era, and an upturn in the club's fortunes, when local businessman Mick Slater took over at the helm. The club was elected to the London League and regained its senior status. Cray moved to a new ground at Grassmeade in 1955. Their stay there was a very successful period in the club's history. Drawing extra support from the commuter town of Orpington, they played in the London League and then the Aetolian League. They were three times crowned champions, won the League Cup twice, and also won the Kent Amateur Cup three times.

Cray switched to the semi-professional Metropolitan League for five seasons commencing in 1966/67. In 1971/72 a merger of the Metropolitan League and the Greater London League created the Met London League. Cray moved to Oxford Road in 1973/74. Johnny Biddle and Jimmy Wakeling proved to be successful managers. In 1974/75 Cray won the Met London League and League Cup, scoring 170 goals in all matches that season. In 1976/77 and 1977/78 Cray won the London Spartan League championship. Cray decided to return to the Kent League in 1978/79. Success came quickly because Cray won the championship in 1980/81, having been runners-up the year before. Their powerful new team under manager Harry Richardson reached the FA Vase quarterfinal and 5th round in those two seasons. After that, the 1980s decade brought only one more piece of silverware, the Kent League Cup in 1983/84. After finishing Kent League runners up in 1990/91, Cray had a lean period during most of the 1990s, with the exception of 1992/93 when they won the Kent Senior Trophy. A new club chairman Gary Hillman arrived in 1994/95 and Ian Jenkins, a Cray player since 1993, was appointed manager in 1999. By now, Cray were tenants of Bromley FC. As champions of the Kent League in 2002/03 and 2003/04, also reaching the FA Vase quarterfinal, they achieved promotion into the Ryman League Division One. Five years later at the end of season 2008/09 came further promotion into the Ryman Premier League, the highest level of football that the club has played at since the war.

After parting company with long-serving manager Ian Jenkins, relegation into the Ryman Division One North came at the end of 2013/14. The 2014/15 season started with much optimism but this was soon dispelled with a run of difficult results and three changes in management. Looking very much like having to suffer back to back relegations at Christmas and with 10 games to go after suffering a home defeat to the eventual League Champions the Wands went on a 10 game winning run, with a team assembled by the then manager Tommy Warrilow to secure survival and became the Ryman North League Team of the Year. For 2015/16 The Wands were managed by former player Tony Russell. The Wands finished third in the Ryman North Division losing in the play-off semi final. Two years later and now in the Bostik League South they were beaten by Walton Casuals at the same stage after an excellent season saw Cray finish third and as top scorers with 112 goals. But an off the field victory was obtained in March 2018 as approval by Bromley Council was granted for a new Football Stadium/Community Hub at Flamingo Park in Sidcup which on Monday 26th November received a further boost when approval was given by the GLA (Mayor of London) giving the green light to a bright future for the club and community.

NEWS From: Ian Townsend

CRAY STRENGTHEN! As if they're not strong enough already! Cray Wanderers, already thirteen points ahead at the top of the South East Division and having conceded only twenty two goals all season, have decided that they can do even better if they bring in a new left back! So they've signed one - direct from one of their promotion rivals!

WHEN HARRY MET HAYLEY ... AND THE WASPS! Harry Redknapp and Hayley McQueen headed to East Grinstead. So did a large number of other people - and the attraction wasn't the sausages! Up until Saturday, the highest crowd East Grinstead Town had entertained at East Court this season was the two hundred and two who turned up on the Saturday after Christmas to watch the Wasps play a derby match against Haywards Heath Town. Their other highest crowds were also Sussex derby matches, so a causal observer might not have expected the attraction of Herne Bay to smash the club average attendance to smithereens. Four hundred and seventy two people turned up to watch a one-one draw; a match which saw the home side play seventy-two minutes with ten men. So what caused the sudden upsurge? Town have been in very good form of late- had the news finally reached the local community? Well, perhaps it has, but it would seem that the main attraction was the King of the Jungle. Yes, Harry Redknapp was both in town and at Town! The story began last month. East Grinstead Town supporter Mike Phillips entered a competition launched by Richmond Sausages to find the Nation's Most Dedicated Football Fans- and won. The Prize? Harry Redknapp, Hayley McQueen from Sky Sports News, a prize penalty shootout, a Q&A with ‘Arry, a ‘Fan of the Match’ Trophy and enough free sausages to put a local butchers out of business. The club advertised their good fortune, local media got on board, and the locals came down to watch and were royally entertained.

Tom Carlse was an almost ever-present as Greenwich Borough, took a place in the playoffs last season, and in this campaign has made twenty-nine appearances, scoring two goals, as Ashford United have powered their way to fourth place. His former boss at Ashford and Greenwich, Gary Alexander, commented on social media: 'What a signing that is - a quality attacking left back who would leave a hole in anyone's team. There are signings that make a difference and Tom Carlse is one of them - great work Tony Russell.'

HASTINGS MOVE FOR ELPHICK ... Ex-Worthing boss puts his boots on for a move to the Pilot Field. Hastings United have announced the signing of former Worthing boss - and more recently, Burgess Hill Town defender - Gary Elphick. United, who lost to playoff rivals Haywards Heath Town, have a rather young squad and the experienced Elphick will undoubtedly be a boon as they attempt to get their promotion push back on track. Elphick left Burgess Hill at the beginning of February, explaining that he needed some time away from the game, but that time is now most obviously up. He joined the Hillians in September 2017 and helped them win their annual fight against relegation, joining the club after leaving Worthing, where he had been both player and manager. He made twenty-six appearances for the Hillians this season, the last in a defeat to Bishop's Stortford on 26th January.

HASTINGS UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB POLICIES

Customer Charter Full details of our Customer Charter are available at our website: www.hastingsunited.com. These include our policy on ticket and pricing, abandoned matches and our involvement in the Hastings Community.

Health & Safety Hastings United Football Club takes seriously your health and safety during your visit to the Pilot Field.

The Club Believes Customer Care starts on the inside, with a good team of staff and work ethic. Most of our staff are volunteers but The Club expect our staff to always do their best.

Please note that the officers and stewards of Hastings United Football Club will enforce Ground Regulations. A copy of these Regulations is posted at the entrance to each turnstile and within the ground on the wall next to the food bar.

Our staff should remain courteous even in difficult situations. The Club and its staff know they are offering a service and that they would like every customer to return.

Please note that the following are offences under the Football (Offences) Act 1991, as amended: the throwing of any object within the ground without lawful authority or excuse, the chanting of anything of an indecent or racist nature: the entry onto the playing area or any adjacent area to which spectators are not generally admitted without lawful authority or excuse.

We believe that people come first when offering a service.

Under the Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol etc.) Act 1985, the following are offences for which a person can be arrested by a police officer: attempting to enter the ground or being inside the ground whilst drunk: being in possession of any intoxicating liquor, or bottle, can or other portable container which could cause damage or personal injury when entering the ground.

We expect our staff to be friendly and helpful and to know their job or be able to call upon someone who is able to respond to the needs of our customers. We expect our staff to give their full attention to a customer in any situation that arises.

In Addition We expect our staff and volunteers to care about their job as this will ensure they care about our customers. We expect our staff and volunteers to treat every customer as they would like to be treated themselves. We in return expect our customers to treat our volunteers and staff with respect and The Club will not tolerate any physical or verbal abused aimed at them.
