Welcome to the Pilot Field for today’s Bostik League Division One South East match against Hythe Town FC. We extend a warm welcome to the officials, players and supporters of our visitors. We hope they have an enjoyable afternoon, and wish them a safe return trip. A similar warm welcome is extended to today’s three match officials, Referee Jamie Wells and his two Assistants, Christopher Britton and James Kerten. We return to Pilot Field action this afternoon looking to make it five wins on the bounce. Today’s visitors currently sit at 7th position in the league table with 50 points from 33 matches. 9 points shy of 5th placed play-off placed Haywards Heath Town. Although Hythe’s form has been erratic with 4 wins, 2 draws and 4 defeats in the last 10 league matches, their squad contains some very talented footballers at Bostik SE level. Last Saturday Hythe defeated play-off contenders, Ashford United, 3-1 in front of a Reachfields Stadium season best league attendance of 462. A brace from Sid Sollis and a late goal from Charlie Webster sealed the win. The boys will need to be sharp today to contain Hythe’s main goalscoring threat, Zak Ansah, who netted a hattrick against us in our 3-1 away defeat last September. Today’s Cannons squad contains a few familiar names including Ollie Rowe, welcome back to the Pilot Field Ollie. Another familiar face is Mitchell Dickenson who had a loan spell with the U’s in 2016/17. Mitchell has recently been selected to represent an FA XI and will be managed for a game against Bedfordshire FA by England C Team Manager, Paul Fairclough. Good luck with that match and welcome back to Hastings Mitchell. Finally, congratulations to Jack Dixon, who today reaches a U’s career milestone, 200 first team appearances.

Today we will be aiming to make it 5 wins on the spin and with that a return to top of the playoff spots .... we will also be doing our level best to maintain our tremendous home record - the best I believe in the league! Having dominated league leaders Cray Wanderers from a losing position we know that here at the Pilot Field we can beat anyone .... and Hythe are no exception, however despite an underwhelming season we know that Hythe are a club with a number of dangerous individuals whom we have due respect for and we must work diligently against to stop. Your Club can be PROUD to be recognised as one that is committed to raising standards throughout grassroots football, ensuring that it is well organised, well managed and providing a positive experience for all players, coaches and volunteers'. The Club would like to thank Christian Kipps, Roger Bond, Dean White and Ben White of Skiltek who assisted substantially with the putting together of the Club's Charter Standard application. The FA Charter Standard Development is aimed at clubs who are enhancing the quality and scope of their football offering which the Club has very much achieved via its successful and very professional academy operation run under the management of Skiltek. The next step for the Club will be to eventually obtain Community Club accreditation which acknowledges the most advanced level of club development and football provision. This the Club will seek once it is operating from new facilities that can accommodate the requirements necessary for Community Club status to be achieved. Dave Nessling Chairman

GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart A light hearted and serious look at football (not necessarily just football) at all levels, those who play, those who administrate and those of us who follow our various teams in this vast, lop sided pyramid of the game. At all times, views expressed are mine.

VARCICAL Well it is, isn't it? Cardiff scrapping for their lives in the Premier League get the very worst of deals in their game at home to Chelsea. Poor officiating and ludicrously limp wristed use of the tool that would've swiftly seen the Welsh outfit get something from the game. Football must be the richest sport in the world yet has been the last to make use of video tech to assist referees. Tennis, Cricket and Rugby are so far ahead and to compound Football's inexcusable tardiness, as if that isn't bad enough, when VAR is eventually introduced, full use isn't made of it. And we end up STILL with the farcical situation of pundits dissecting bad decisions with the use of BBC, ITV or SKY video while the rule makers, administrators and refs who also have access to the same standard of coverage, selectively overlook blatant wrong doings that are there for all to see.

CONGESTION AT CHERTSEY Check that out for fixture congestion as Chertsey's achievement of getting to Wembley for a FA Vase Final against Cray Valley PM takes it's toll on their league campaign. These blokes have to fit things like real jobs in between games. Remember that next time you hear a Premier League manager whinge about fixture congestion. Cup runs are all very well but they play havoc with bread and butter fixtures as we found a few years back. After the novelty of an FA Cup tie at The Riverside up at Middlesbrough it was back to the grind of Ryman Premier and - relegation. Hastings Town played Chertsey way back in 1996/97 in an FA Cup 2nd Round Qualifier. And seen it all before looking at some of this season's games (Cray springs to mind) - we came back from 0-2 down to win 3-2 with two goals from Darryl Parris and one from Matt Ball.

This could have been put right over 30 years ago and would've saved us the nauseating sight of Maradonna enjoying his 86 Hand of God goal and the Schumacher assault on Patrick Battiston in 82 seeing the West Germans minus a red carded goalkeeper. The picture below, of Neil Warnock discussing that Chelsea game with David Luiz sums it all up nicely.

FA CUP Semi finals at Wembley. All part of the great devaluation of what was once a first class knock out competition. I recall in the seventies looking forward to January and the 3rd round introduction of the big names fielding their first teams. Prior to my U's conversion in 1976 I was a Chelsea fan and still remember them beating Leeds in a replay in 1970. That was huge. And getting to Wembley itself was huge. Even if you lost in the final you had consolation big time in being one of the two sides to get to ........ Wembley.

16

How this competition has since plummeted. Big sides don't field first teams, replays are being phased out and the obsession with sponsorship hasn't helped either. This will all be put right as of next season when every EVERY FA Cup tie will be played at Wembley and all games will comprise of penalty shoot outs with ten ties played simultaneously - Wembley's pitch having been marked out with ten penalty areas and goals. The whole competition from extra preliminary round to the final will be slotted into a vacant Saturday.

HERNE BAY FEEL THE PINCH As if seeing Thamesmead blow out wasn't enough, we now hear that Herne Bay are finding the going tough. Things are dodgy enough to be told in the Non League Paper that they hope to make it to the end of the season with players departing and other cost cutting measures being imposed. With just four games to go, here's hoping they make it.

How times have changed for Greenwich Borough, recent play-off 'semi-finalists. Still bottom despite that excellent draw at Cray, they find themselves off to the Channel Islands today for a classic relegation 6 pointer at Guernsey. As for Hythe this afternoon. Time we got a win against them. They took full advantage of indifferent United defence at Reachfields to beat us earlier this season. We need to keep winning and putting that poor display right will do us no harm at all.

POINTS PER GAME Four successive wins have seen the U' s creep back up that PPG table. It'll be the end of the month before that FA created shambles takes full effect. Far more on that in the Ashford programme.

COLLYWOBBLES TOP AND BOTTOM OF BOSTIK SE So, last Saturday should've seen us at Thamesmead. That was never going to happen so it was a case of keeping an eye on other results especially Ashford and Haywards Heath - both having a game in hand. Hythe - surprisingly - won't be in the play-offs but (very decent gate of 462) saw off Ashford 3-1, Haywards Heath beat Whitstable 2-1 and Horsham who have recovered tremendously well from an indifferent start, hammered Sittingbourne 6-1. That saw Horsham replace us in 2nd place having played a game more. The potentially most important goal last Saturday could be the late Sittingbourne one which trimmed Horsham's g/d. That could all be vital when it comes to home play off placings. Sunday featured one game - top vs bottom. Cray Wanderers vs Greenwich Borough. Cray have wobbled recently - one point from three games - as they attempt to wrap up the BSE title. And more of the same as Borough grabbed a vital point with a 1-1 draw. Cray will win the league but will stagger over the finishing line.

HYTHE TOWN FC

Hythe Town Football Club was formed in August 1910 although football in Hythe can be traced back into the previous century. The club joined the Folkestone and District Leagues and after the First World War had some success, four championships and only once outside the top three in fourteen seasons. They moved up into the Kent Amateur League in 1936 and were promoted into Division One before the Second World War intervened. The 50s and 60s saw little league success but that changed in the early 70s with three successive league titles and a Kent Junior Cup win. Hythe were granted senior status and elected into the Kent League in 1977, playing at the newly acquired Reachfields, an old army sports ground on the edge of the town’s firing ranges. The club were runners-up in the Kent League on three occasions but it was not until property developer Tony Walton took over Hythe Town in February 1988 that things really started to happen. That summer saw the ground developed to Southern League standard with seats and a social club, with viewing balconies, above new dressing rooms. Standing cover extended behind one goal and for the whole of the far side, and floodlights were installed. The ground capacity still remains at 3,000 with the majority under cover. The chairman proved to be a high-profile character who attracted much media attention with his high spending on the ground and team. Town won the 1988-9 Kent League title by 14 points and set a league record of 133 goals. The club gained promotion to the Southern League. The next season saw another promotion as the main aim, but the club’s great run to the FA Vase semi-finals handicapped their league ambitions,

20

with four games a week at times, and a sixth place finish. Hythe lost out to the eventual Vase winners Yeading, winning the home leg 3-2 in front of the club’s record attendance of 2,147, but cruelly losing the second leg 2-0 with the crucial goal coming from a big deflection. They did win the Eastern Professional Floodlight Cup at their first attempt. The following season was very similar, topping the table in November but runs in four cups again caused fixture congestion and a final placing of eighth. Hythe lost out to Trowbridge Town in a Vase quarter-final second replay, lost to Chelmsford City over two legs in the Southern League Cup final, but won the Kent Senior Trophy and retained the Eastern Professional Floodlight Cup. The club played 40 league games and 33 cup ties. In 1991/2 Hythe again topped the table in the early months but the money was beginning to run out. With little cup success, the exit from the Vase at Evesham United in February saw many of the team sold and their replacements could only finish thirteenth. the club did reach the final of the Kent Senior Cup, losing in extra-time to Bromley at Gillingham’s Priestfield Stadium. That match proved to be Walton’s last game, and he put the club into liquidation soon after. Supporters rallied round and entered a scratch side, as Hythe United, into the following season’s Kent County League and negotiated continued use of Reachfields Stadium. After three seasons the club regained senior status and in 1995 were elected back into the Kent League but the club would struggle for a number of seasons in the wrong half of the table. In 2001 Hythe dropped the “United” suffix, reverting to “Town” and in November 2002 appointed Paul Fisk as Manager. This proved a turning point and Hythe became a top six club. There was one exception, in 2005/6, when again the Vase was a distraction, winning five ties before going out to Winchester City in the fourth round, in front of 441 spectators at Reachfields.

HISTORY In season 2007/8 Hythe forced themselves to the top of the table in March and were considered to be favourites for the title. Disappointment was acute therefore when form was lost in the final weeks and the side not only slipped to fourth place, but also lost in the final of the League Cup. The highlight was a fantastic FA Cup win over Andy Hessenthaler’s Dover Athletic before a crowd of 1,109 at Reachfields, and achieving the important Ryman League ground grading. The club achieved runners-up spot the following season and then Scott Porter, who had been Paul Fisk’s assistant manager, took over as manager for the 2009/10 season with Clive Cook as his assistant. There were many good results but too many dropped points saw Hythe finish in third position. Town also progressed through three rounds of the FA Cup to be drawn against the full-time professionals of Woking who were relieved to escape with a replay after an exciting 2-2 draw at Reachfields. The replay was another tight match until the last few minutes when Woking scored three times to go through 5-1. The 2010/11 season was possibly the most successful in the history of the club, with Scott Porter and leading the playing side to the Kent League Championship for the first time in over twenty years, and with it promotion to the Ryman League. After a 22-match unbeaten run in the new-year, dropped points over Easter took the championship to the wire and the league was clinched in dramatic style on the last day of the season through a last-minute equaliser at Tunbridge Wells. This amazing achievement was coupled with the club’s best ever F.A. Cup run, and the best for any Kent League side in over 50 years. Hythe negotiated their way through six rounds, including memorable wins over higher league opposition at Concord Rangers of the Ryman Premier and at home to Staines Town of the Blue Square Bet South. The prize was an away

draw in the First Round Proper to League Two side Hereford United. It was one round too far on the pitch, the hosts comfortably winning 5-1 with Gary Mickelborough getting the Hythe goal. During the 2011/2 season the club maintained their progress and finished in eighth place in Ryman Division One South. Hythe were also able to get their hands on some silverware as wins over Ebbsfleet United and Dover Athletic were followed by a single goal victory in the final at Dartford to win the Kent Senior Cup. The following season ended with a 17-match unbeaten run and a fourth place finish. This brought about the club’s first play-off appearance, unfortunately losing at Faversham Town in the semi-final. After another eighth place finish Scott Porter and Clive Cook left the club at the end of 2013/4 and Tim Dixon was appointed as manager in May 2014. It was a disappointing season that saw the club finish in 16th position and after a poor start to 2015-6 the club decided to part company with Dixon in September. Clive Cook returned to take over, this time as manager and led a remarkable turnaround from 22nd place to fourth as the club qualified for the Ryman South play-offs for a second time. Defeat followed at Worthing in the semi-final. The club ended just outside the play-off zone last season and will look for an improved position this year. The club parted company with manager Clive Cook in January 2018 as ex-Herne Bay manager Sam Denly arrived to take his place. HASTINGS UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB POLICIES

Customer Charter Full details of our Customer Charter are available at our website: www.hastingsunited.com. These include our policy on ticket and pricing, abandoned matches and our involvement in the Hastings Community.

Health & Safety Hastings United Football Club takes seriously your health and safety during your visit to the Pilot Field.

The Club Believes Customer Care starts on the inside, with a good team of staff and work ethic. Most of our staff are volunteers but The Club expect our staff to always do their best.

Please note that the officers and stewards of Hastings United Football Club will enforce Ground Regulations. A copy of these Regulations is posted at the entrance to each turnstile and within the ground on the wall next to the food bar.

Our staff should remain courteous even in difficult situations. The Club and its staff know they are offering a service and that they would like every customer to return.

Please note that the following are offences under the Football (Offences) Act 1991, as amended: the throwing of any object within the ground without lawful authority or excuse, the chanting of anything of an indecent or racist nature: the entry onto the playing area or any adjacent area to which spectators are not generally admitted without lawful authority or excuse.

We believe that people come first when offering a service.

Under the Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol etc.) Act 1985, the following are offences for which a person can be arrested by a police officer: attempting to enter the ground or being inside the ground whilst drunk: being in possession of any intoxicating liquor, or bottle, can or other portable container which could cause damage or personal injury when entering the ground.

We expect our staff to be friendly and helpful and to know their job or be able to call upon someone who is able to respond to the needs of our customers. We expect our staff to give their full attention to a customer in any situation that arises.

In Addition We expect our staff and volunteers to care about their job as this will ensure they care about our customers. We expect our staff and volunteers to treat every customer as they would like to be treated themselves. We in return expect our customers to treat our volunteers and staff with respect and The Club will not tolerate any physical or verbal abused aimed at them.
