FROM THE CHAIR We have arrived at the final home league game of the regular season in a season that has been disrupted by the unfortunate demise, during the season, of our first game opponents Thamesmead Town FC. This event left only 36 league games to be played, some 10 less than last season. I personally believe that having only 20 clubs in the league (19 in the end this season) is insufficient. Having said this I think the 24 of last season is probably to many but still better than the league compilation number for this season. I think everyone likes some midweek football but we have seen little this season. This leaves me to strongly believe the tradition that used to exist of 22 clubs in a division at semi-pro level was the best number and did not require change.

Dave Nessling whereby we now look to develop young energetic home grown players to go with young players from outside the area who have something to prove. We still have though kept a small band of experienced non-league semi-professionals who have assisted and educated the young players greatly. Our Academy, now in its fourth year, under the direction of coaching partner Skiltek, is continuing to produce talented footballers. We are delighted to welcome a substantial group of academy players to the game today. Please give them a great round of applause when they parade.

EDITOR’S THANKS Well it’s the last ‘regular’ league home match of the 2018/19 season … it has certainly been an eventful season and one that finishes with a great deal of excitement and expectation for the Bostik League SE play-offs, with today’s match being particularly important when it comes to who finishes with a home semi-final draw. Not forgetting the points-per-game (PPG) ratio that is so vital in the overall semi-pro pyramid promotion qualification this season. Producing 23, fifty-two page matchday programmes and preparing others for potential cup replays, often with tight timescales, has only been achievable with the help and support of a number of people and I would like to place on record my appreciation for their valued contribution. Thanks go to, in no particular order, the Club’s directors, Chris Agutter for sharing his first team football thoughts, Simon Stoddart for providing his humorous and rather enlightening take on the semi-pro game under the ‘Gut Feeling’ column and for doing a great job of trying to help people get their heads around the wonderful promotion system brought in by the FA to restructure the semipro pyramid - it’s still a bonkers system though! Thanks to Roy Gannon and Peter High for match, player and past meetings data, Kirsty Thompson for posting the programme links to the Club website, Scott White for providing me with difficult decisions each week about which one of his superb gallery of matchday photographs to select as a cover image. A great deal of thanks goes once again to Hayley Clout for the tremendous support she has given me throughout the season, as an important communication link and for her hard work coordinating material and logos for sponsors adverts and features, mascot details and club activities, often under print deadline pressure - all very much appreciated Hayley. Thanks also to the opposing teams and other contributors for their content. A note of appreciation also goes to Craig Sealby and his team at Impact Design & Print for their excellent print reproduction of the matchday programme. Finally, a thank you to all those who have purchased a programme. I hope you have been happy with the presentation and enjoyed the content. Onwards to the play-offs. COYUs. Paul Hoggard 10

GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart A light hearted and serious look at football (not necessarily just football) at all levels, those who play, those who administrate and those of us who follow our various teams in this vast, lop sided pyramid of the game. At all times, views expressed are mine.

NITTY GRITTY TIME Yes, it's getting to that crucial, end of regular season, time when sides at the business end of the table with promotion aspirations are sweating on getting into the play-off places first of all, and secondly, grabbing a 2nd or 3rd place finish in order to get a home semifinal. Last weekend's results saw Horsham open up a five point gap on us after our entertaining but hugely frustrating 1-1 draw here with Hythe Town. Horsham were winning 3-2 at Herne Bay while our boys were being kept at bay by the Hythe keeper who had a contrasting afternoon with some outstanding saves and several great escapes of butterfingered fumbling. A draw was frustrating given the number of chances that were created and being a goal down at half-time – Hythe one chance, one goal – had heads being scratched amongst a very respectable 513 attendance. Bradley Stevenson's quality equaliser was the very least we deserved. Ashford it was who were to end up the wrong end of Cray's championship aspirations finally coming good. A 3-1 win for Cray saw them deservedly pick up the Bostik SE title while Haywards Heath were going down to a surprise home defeat at the hands of Sevenoaks. They occupy the final play-off place but will now be looking over their shoulders at VCD Athletic who were just three points behind them in 6th after a 5-4 win at home to East Grinstead.

I am no golf fan but hats off to this bloke. Well played Tiger Woods.

16

This programme has been put together before the last round of games on Saturday. Indeed, of relevance to us, a game was played on Friday with Ashford taking on VCD Athletic. Both sides would have had a lot hinging on that game. By the time you read this you will know what happened at Homelands. And how we got on at Sittingbourne ........

TURNSTILE MATTERS So, Cray sealed the Bostik SE title last weekend. A disappointing attendance of 268 viewed proceedings at Hayes Lane. Cray, like so many suburban sides face huge competition from Premier League and EFL outfits – and that is reflected in their attendances. Contrast 268 seeing a title being won by a side that has lost just three games all season up till last weekend with the massive 1058 gate at Guernsey where the bottom two teams locked horns last Sunday with a 1-1 stalemate resulting and Greenwich Borough probably the happier of the two.

PRICE WORTH PAYING? Mixed feelings really as – not surprisingly – the success of the “Bring em on” policy supervised by Agutter & Co sees Jamie Fielding and Adam Lovatt attracting attention from high up. You don't want to see players going just as it all gels and a successful team gets really going. But it's inevitable because these lads want to prove themselves at a higher level and we want them to succeed too. Hopefully all is in place for United to rightfully benefit from what Chris and his coaching team have achieved. And that is there for you to see a little further on into this programme – the National League u19 Alliance and Bostik Development u23 tables. Our u19s are midtable in the National competition which might not be remarkable – till you look at the other sides in that league. 10 of them, of which 5 are National League, one National South, three Bostik Premier and just the one – Whyteleafe – Bostik SE. Mid-table all of a sudden looks very respectable! The u23 side has been locking horns at the top with Tooting & Mitcham, indeed they won a recent encounter 3-0 with the goals all coming from 1st team regulars, including the return to ftness Davide Rodari. You might ask yourself why are 1st teamers playing u23 football but will stop shaking your head when you realise that's where they should be playing but have come on so well that they are regular first team players. Once again, credit to the coaching people as well as the players concerned.

I think this was back in 1997-98 when Hastings Town won a Southern Premier fixture 2-1 at Ashford. Kieran O'Shaughnessy here giving today's opposing manager the run round! If we go up you have to wonder what side we will kick off with next August. Jamie and Adam are by no means the only players capable of doing the business much higher up. In an ideal world, they go onto better things with our best wishes, the club benefits financially and that enables Chris & Co to build a squad based on the “Bring em on” policy combined with several seasoned, older blokes who've been around a while. Gary Elphick a classic example. Whichever division we find ourselves in next season, I suspect it will be with a few new faces.

POINTED HATS AND PPG

(PPG Table on P18)

And lots of em at FA HQ where the crazily managed restructuring of the semi-pro game has been devised with the realisation still dawning on some that two step 4 play-off winners will be denied promotion this season. We play at step 4 and today's game against Ashford United is of great significance to both sides on two counts – play-off places and points-per-game (PPG). Seven divisions at step 4, but only 12 promotion places (seven champions and five play-off winners) meaning that two play-off winners will not go up. This is an interim thing as the FA takes a couple of seasons to restructure semi-professional football. It is also a very unfair and crassly devised thing. And it seems – according to last weekend's Non League Paper - to have occurred to even the FA that the step 4 non promotion issue needs looking at because they won't be proceeding with it next

season. Not that that is any consolation to the clubs who miss out on promotion this season. The end of next season is a black hole of super confusion and will be discussed at length, er, next season. Last weekend's NLP features a full spread on the restructuring but – disgracefully – avoids the issue of the two play-off winners at step 4 not being promoted. You have to wonder what the NLP journalist was thinking - if he didn't think that issue was worth raising. And the FA pointed hat wearer must've been delighted it wasn't raised. Anyway – both sides this afternoon should make the Bostik SE play-offs. Having done so, there will immediately be eyes cast on the other step 4 playoff sides nationwide. A club 300 miles away with a better points-per-game tally could make our participation, Ashford's participation – meaningless. Think of VCD Athletic. Worked their socks off to get to within a few points of the play-offs and PPG will almost certainly make it all – again, meaningless. How wrong is that?

TODAY 513 for Hythe was pretty good and they didn't bring many – Ashford will bring loads and who knows, we might see a gate to rival the 1058 at Guernsey a week ago. One of our best performances of the season was in the away fixture at the turn of the year. We'll need another one today as whatever PPG dictates, we battle on for a home play-off spot.

Typical semi-pro view from the game at Ashford this season which doesn't do justice to a 531 Homelands attendance.

ASHFORD UNITED FC The club became more commonly known as ‘Ashford’ upon the post-war resumption of the Kent League competition. However once more fate took a hand and in 1928 the club folded leaving the Town with no senior club.

Initially their home ground was at the back of the Victoria Hotel. About 700 people yielding gate receipts of £5 were present for United’s first match on 19 September 1891, a defeat by the Highland Light Infantry 1–5. The club were founder members of the Kent Premier League in 1894–95 with a reserve side playing in Kent League 2. The club relocated to an enclosed ground with a timber built stand at Godinton Road where the 1899 KCFA Cup Final was staged. Team colours at the time were black and white striped shirts. The team appeared in the Kent Cup Final for two successive years, 1902 and 1903 but were unsuccessful on both occasions: losing a replay 1–4 to Sittingbourne (a last minute penalty equaliser against Ashford causing the replay) and to Maidstone respectively. In 1907 owing to a lack of support at their Godinton Road ground (which being beyond the railway bridge was a fair distance from the town and their previous base in the Newtown area), the club suffering from heavy debts was unable to fulfill its fixtures and ceased playing midseason. Shortly afterwards however a new club was formed, playing as the Ashford Railway Works. The club’s home ground was relocated back to Newtown on land believed to have been provided rent-free by the South Eastern & Chatham Railway. Playing in the Eastern Section of the Kent League and wearing red and green quartered colours, the team enjoyed considerable success winning the League in four successive seasons, 1912, 1913, 1914 & 1920 (The latter after the break caused by the Great War).

20

The decision to found Ashford Town was taken at a meeting in April 1930 chaired by Sir Charles Iggledon, who was the editor of the Kentish Express. Ashford Town were elected to the Kent League, and played their first match on August 30 of the same year at the railway works ground with Canterbury Waverley the visitors. The result was a 4–2 victory. The following year, the club moved to Essella Park. It was the sale of this ground in the mid 1980’s that enabled the purchase and development of the present ground at The Homelands, named after the farm that originally occupied the site, 4 miles south of the town centre and with easy access to the M20. Despite being Champions of the Kent League in the 1948-49 season, it was cup football that was to provide the greatest success. Town reached the first round proper of the FA Cup as a Kent League side in 1959-59, losing 1-0 to Crystal Palace in front of a ground record crowd of 6,525. In the 1960’s, Town reached the first round of the FA Cup on 4 occasions, falling to league opposition each time. Further honours arrived with success in the Kent Senior Cup in 1959 and 1963. In 1972-73, Town reached the semi finals of the FA Trophy, losing to Scarborough by a penalty goal. The following year they finished third in the League when Alan Morton set the club scoring record of 46 goals from 69 games, a record which still stands today and will be extremely difficult to beat. The club earned promotion to the Premier Division of the Southern League in the 1986-87 season, at a time when the new ground at The Homelands was being constructed. The final game played at Essella Park was a draw with Dorchester, which ensured that both teams were promoted.

The next season saw ground sharing at Folkestone whilst the new Homelands ground was being constructed. Sadly, the first season at The Homelands ended in disappointment when the club was relegated. During the 1990’s, manager Neil Cugley produced an entertaining and successful side which gained promotion back to the Premier Division in 1995-96 and, as a highlight, drew a first round FA Cup match with Fulham captained by Micky Adams. A capacity crowd of 3,300 packed into The Homelands and Sky TV showed highlights of the game. The result was a creditable 2-2 draw, with a replay at Craven Cottage. Again they impressed their league host and took the game into extra time, eventually losing 5-3. The following year, Ashford defeated Dagenham & Redbridge in the first round and then drew Watford away in the second round, losing 5-0. The season ended poorly with a finishing position of 18th, with the club only saved from relegation by the resignation of Sudbury from the league. Several managers then came and went, with varying degrees of success until Don Crosbie and Tony Betteridge took over as owners. Their first appointment as manager was Clive Walker, who was replaced during the season by Steve Lovell. Following a major falling out at Boardroom level, the club’s future was in the balance in the 200910 season. This resulted in several players departing, and manager Steve Lovell was just able to put together a side to keep the club from relegation. This valiant effort was to be in vain, since the Boardroom conflict had reached the courts with Tony Betteridge forcing the winding up of Ashford Town FC. Tony Betteridge succeeded in purchasing the club assets from the Administrator despite enormous protests from Chairman Don Crosbie who managed to receive assurances in the court for Football at the highest possible level to be maintained at least till the legal battle was settled through the courts. Under the new name of Ashford United, the club continued with a Board comprising of local football enthusiasts.

A BRIEF HISTORY In 2013, Following the lengthy legal battle, Tony Betteridge conceded and formally announced that he would no longer be involved with the Club, handing ownership over to ATFC Supporters & Members Club Ltd on the 1st November 2013. To streamline, the company then became Ashford United FC Ltd who own all freehold that is The Homelands which includes Homelands Stadium and Ashford United FC. Today’s management team consists of Tommy Warrilow and Alex O’Brien. Alongside are Goalkeeping Coach, Terry Sedge and Physio, Ben Coles. Great times ahead for Ashford United FC.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS As the closest of our ‘out of county’ opponents the Ashford sides have been regular opponents ever since we, as Hastings & St. Leonards, first met Ashford Railway Works F.C. in an away friendly just over ninety-five years ago. Played on Saturday, 2nd December, 1922 – when we lost 1-8. Subsequently, we met in the various forms of both clubs until they left the Ryman Isthmian League in 2010. The present club was formed by former members of the previous club and in 2011 became founder members of the Kent Invicta League. We did not meet competively until their promotion into this division. However, we did send a youth side for a pre-season friendly on Wednesday, 10th August, 2011 which we lost 1-4. Earlier this season we returned to the Homelands Stadium for a league match:Tuesday 1 January 2019 Bostik One South

NEWS From: Ian Townsend

BLACKMAN'S THE NEW MAN AT WHITSTABLE Changes at the helm as Porter moves upstairs Whitstable Town have announced big changes for next season, with manager Scott Porter becoming Director of Football whilst Lloyd Blackman comes in and takes charge of the first team.

GREEN LIONS GET THE GREEN LIGHT FOR NEW GROUND Guernsey to have a new stadium in time for 2021/22 season Guernsey FC have confirmed that the States of Guernsey Planning Service have given permission for a new ground and a new home for all Guernsey football at Victoria Avenue. Currently the Victoria Avenue site provides training facilities for the Green Lions, GFA Academy, Guernsey Ladies FC and Belgrave Wanderers, but the new stadium will be the home of the Guernsey FA, as well as being used by Guernsey FC, for GFA representative matches, and to provide a community 3G facility for the whole island.

GFC chairman Mark Le Tissier stated: “The successful outcome of the planning process and the eventual completion of the project will secure the long-term future for GFC and will continue the journey that football development in Guernsey is on. GFC is extremely grateful to the GFA Board and staff for their support, particularly CEO Gary Roberts who has worked patiently and diligently to see through this part of the project.“ You can read more at the Guernsey FC website.

Former Brentford striker, Ashford United coach and until December last year, Ramsgate manager, Blackman will have Darren Anslow and Paul Murray as his first team coaches.

BAY MANAGERS DEPART AND CLUB MAY FOLLOW ... Herne Bay managers walk away and club contemplates its very existence, blaming 'social media trolls.' Just before victory over Whyteleafe, Herne Bay confirmed the departure of managers John Embery and Jermaine Darlington before questioning whether the club will have a team next week, or whether there will even be a club next season. Blaming 'social media trolls', the directors added that 'relegation to the SCEFL looks inevitable.' The statement read: 'The social media trolls have finally won the day. The management team have been hounded out of the club and as such the club are playing Whyteleafe with Anthony Deer taking the team. Whether we will have a team to field next Saturday is in the lap of the footballing gods. Relegation back to the SCEFL looks to be inevitable. Whether there will be a club next season is unclear. The board have put so much effort over the years but the past two weeks has become so demoralising. These keyboard warriors who hide behind false titles post what they like without knowing the full facts, criticising the board and their decisions and it is these individuals who have destroyed this football club.' Deer managed to steer the side to a 2-0 victory, but what the future holds for Bay - given this statement - remains unclear.
