TONIGHT’S MATCH SPONSOR
WELCOME Good evening all. Welcome to the Pilot Field for this evening’s huge Bostik League Division One South East Play-Off Semi-Final match against Ashford United FC.
I started Blasted Bare in July 2018 as I'd recognised a hole in the sand and soda blasting industry. I am mobile and so can come to your job site to clean almost anything and everything from timbers to brick work, metals to fibre glass, Grp's, plastics and catering equipment in situ using soda of course, because soda will NOT remove metal at all, as it's an incredibly soft and delicate media. To date I've blasted 400 year old timbers and oak paneling, cast iron fire place in a third floor flat, wheels, engines, car body shells and chassis, motorbike engine heads and the landing gear of a Mk VB Spitfire. As you can see I have and am working on anything and everything that requires going back to it's original form for a fresh brand new look. I can be found on Facebook (Blasted Bare) so please go and have a look at all of the various jobs and see if there is anything that I may be able to help you with in the future.
We once again extend a very warm welcome to the officials, players and supporters of our Kent based visitors. We hope they have an enjoyable evening, albeit without success, and wish them a safe return journey. A similar warm welcome is extended to today’s four match officials, Referee George Warren his two Assistants, Lawrence Torz-Brown, Thomas Price and the fourth official for tonight, Isaac Searle. We return to Pilot Field action this evening following our Easter Monday clash with tonight’s visitors with whom we shared the spoils after an entertaining 2-2 draw, and a convincing 3-1 win away to struggling Greenwich Borough who have lost their fight to retain Bostik status. Easter Monday’s clash was played out in front of a tremendous gate of 910 with Davide Rodari scoring both the U’s goals, one in each half. The Greenwich win, in front of a crowd of 152, took the U’s unbeaten run to 8 matches, 6 wins and 2 draws, making us the top Bostik SE form team over that number of games. Supporters’ Player of the Season, Jack Dixon, notched up two goals to take his season tally to 15 with Sam Adams striking the other from the penalty spot. All set then, for tonight’s huge semi-final clash ... Ashford will be a tough side to beat, so it has all the makings of an exciting football encounter. Good luck boys! Go win it! Finally, thank you all for your support throughout this season and for coming along this evening to cheer the U’s onto victory and a Bostik SE Final this Friday evening. ASHFORD UTD MANAGER TOMMY WARRILOW
Ashford United Football Club Nickname: The Nuts & Bolts Tommy spent seven years as manager of Tonbridge Angels, winning promotion from the Ryman Premier League before the club spent three years in the Conference South. He left at the end of the 2013-2014 season following relegation back to Step 3 and spent time as chief scout at Ebbsfleet United before returning to the dugout as manager of Cray Wanderers. Warrilow masterminded a minor miracle at Cray, taking over in January 2015 and producing a ten game win streak at the end of the season which saw the Wands retain their Ryman North status.

GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart A light hearted and serious look at football (not necessarily just football) at all levels, those who play, those who administrate and those of us who follow our various teams in this vast, lop sided pyramid of the game. At all times, views expressed are mine.
2018-2019 ERE WE GO ......... So, the regular, bread and butter, 3pm Saturday season is done after a truly bizzare afternoon at Greenwich Borough and we enter the play-offs to decide the final promotion places from Step 4. The FA's ineptly cobbled together restructuring of the semi-pro game is what it is and has been given the response it deserves. As if Points-Per-Game isn't bad enough, the playing field has been distorted further by the semi-finals and finals for the 7 leagues concerned being played on different dates. Tonight sees just the Bostik SE semi-finals being played. Sam Adams, for starters, limped off on Saturday afternoon and gets less time to be repaired than someone from Bromsgrove Sporting or Yate Town who limped off on Saturday afternoon but doesn't have to play again till Wednesday when the Southern League semis are played. They get 48 hours more to prepare and repair. How can that be right? Points-per-game. Appalling. Haywards Heath are at Horsham tonight in the other Bostik SE semi-final knowing they can't go up even if they spring a surprise. I haven't a clue early Sunday morning what happened at Homelands on Saturday when Ashford hammered Haywards Heath 5-0, no clue as in what was Trevor McCreadie (remember him playing a few games for us – a useful forward) doing starting the game in goal? What was that all about?
Jack Dixon was soooo close to a hat-trick at Greenwich Borough ...... Hope Joe Knight got his second goal. That was special. 16
Once again I have taken full advantage of the excellent work of Ware Town follower, Peter Miller who keeps us up-to-date on Twitter (@petermiller36) with his Step 4 charts and I reproduce in this GF his layout of semi-finals, finals and the crucial inter-league PPG table. First of all we need to win tonight and keep an eye tomorrow and Wednesday on the other leagues' semi-finals hoping the clubs below us in the PPG “table” win their games – except, er, Ashford! If Haywards Heath spring a big surprise and win their meaningless semi-final at Horsham tonight and we beat Ashford then we would host Haywards Heath in Friday evening's final. United are no strangers to Isthmian League play-offs with one exception – tonight's game is our first home play-off. Dover Athletic, Tooting & Mitcham, Folkestone Invicta and Dorking Wanderers – all away from home. U's vs Ashford part 2 will be quite a spectacle and who knows, we might see over a thousand here this evening. Not sure if the 910 gate here on the Bank Holiday included the air filled spectators who were to be seen bobbing around? And if we make it to the final, I shall be following it from my favourite watering hole, Phillies Sports Bar in Angeles City 8500 miles away in The Philippines. All booked up a while back well before any distractions like Bostik SE play-offs reared their heards.
GREENWICH BOROUGH – A BIZZARE AFTERNOON And so it was. Away ground 129 following Hastings Town / United in London SE9. If ever there was an example of the ups and downs of semi pro football, Greenwich Borough is just that. Not so long ago they were promotion contenders and made the Ryman South play off semi finals in consecutive seasons, they whopped us 5-2 here the season before last and then it all fell apart with the all too familiar rumours that an expensively assembled squad was being dismantled and the dream (and money) was over. They worked their socks off for a 1-1 draw at relegation rivals Guernsey (another fall from grace after the start the Channel Islanders made at this level a few years ago) recently only for that to be all undone by a three point deduction for playing an ineligible player a couple of months ago which saw them go bottom of the league. I was talking to some of their people on Saturday and they told me they found out on Twitter about the points deduction.
A well filled Cole Warren stand for U's Ashford part 1. More of the same expected for part 2! It was a weird afternoon all round. No food or hot drinks, a postage stamp sized pitch which is also home to FA Vase finalists Cray Valley PM, Storm whatever it was called - blowing the ball off course when the bumpy surface wasn't playing it's part, 3-0 at half time and how we didn't finish with seven or eight goals I will never know. And the notices stuck to the turnstiles wall advising all and sundry of the eviction from the premises of Greenwich Borough FC saw it all finish on a truly bizzare note like it says! Apparently they had to be out by 5 pm so as I drove away I had visions of our squad being locked in by over enthusiastic bailiffs ....... Quite unreal!

United press at Sittingbourne. Home keeper was in top form. That's the 3rd ground I've seen Sittingbourne at, they had a 4th in the late 80s.
Structure 2018-2019 - This is the current structure of Steps 1 to 4 as it is this season and next. in 202021, an 8th league will be added to Step 4 to create that semi-pro triangle. The awful Step 4 play-off winner non promotion option used by the FA this season will now not apply next season. In my last GF I was scratching my head working out what the FA was doing with ups and downs between Steps 2 and 4 at the end of next season as they had scrapped the non promotion idea. Here it is. I think ...... Step 3 will end up with a net loss through relegation and promotion of 18 clubs through it's four leagues. 8 clubs promoted to Step 2 and 10 down to Step 4. That's four down from National South/North (Step 2 which is being increased to 24 clubs each) and 14 up from Step 4 = 18 down amd 18 up. How does 10 clubs relegated from four divisions to seven divisions work? Bottom two from each division plus two more third from bottom clubs based on - you got it, PPG. Remember that an eighth Step 4 division is being created to start in 2020-21 - sooooo, educated guess work here - the clubs coming down from Step 3 and up from Step 5 will somehow make up the new 20 club Step 4 division. Perfect triangle created - with lots of hassle and confusion along the way.
END OF Well – in terms of Gut Feeling 2018-2019, I imagine it is. Obviously rooting for a United win this evening and a final to come – but it really does look like whoever wins this evening here will be off to Culver Road Lancing where Horsham are temporarily based till their new ground opens next season. But it's a funny old game and we could end up here on Friday if Haywards Heath poop the Horsham party in the other semi-final. Quite what they are thinking at
18
Haywards Heath I don't know. The FA pointed hat who dreamt up PPG should pop over there perhaps? Anyway – very best of luck to all concerned this evening. This is the biggest game here for years with another biggy awaiting on Friday. Let me conclude with my acknowledgement of the pleasure of working with Paul Hoggard who has created a superbly done programme. More of the same next season, mate – hopefully as a Bostik Premier side!

ASHFORD UNITED FC A VERY BRIEF HISTORY
Ashford United Football Club was formed in 1891 with some varying degrees of success until the team ceased in 1928. In April 1930, Sir Charles Igglesden presided over a meeting to form a senior football club in Ashford and subsequently applied to compete in the Kent League, FA Cup and Kent Senior Cup. It was around then that Ashford Town came into existence, rather than Ashford United, and acquired its nickname of ‘The Nuts & Bolts’ as many of the members were from the ranks of the engineers in the railway works. It was cup football that was to provide the greatest success for Town, reaching the first round proper of the FA Cup as a Kent League side in 1959/60, losing 1-0 to Crystal Palace. In the 1960’s, Town reached the first round of the FA Cup on four occasions, falling to league opposition each time. Further honours arrived with success in the Kent Senior Cup in 1959 and 1963. In 1972/73, Town reached the semi-finals of the FA Trophy. During the 1990’s, manager Neil Cugley produced an entertaining and successful side. Highlights included a first round FA Cup match with Fulham, witnessed by a capacity crowd of 3,300 at Homelands with Sky TV highlights. The result was an impressive 2-2 draw; the replay at Craven Cottage saw the game into extra-time with Town eventually losing 5-3. In 1996/97, Ashford drew Watford away in the secondround, losing 5-0. 20
In 2009/10, following a Boardroom fall-out, the club’s future was put in the balance following the winding up of Ashford Town Football Club but now, under the new name of Ashford United, the club continues to progress. The 'new' United was formed in 2011, resurrecting a name used by the town's football club around the advent of the twentieth century and, in the truest form, represents a 'phoenix club', rising from the ashes of financial ruin and being run by the Crosbie family with the help of members of the local community. Ashford United are currently in the Bostik League South Division. After finishing second in two consecutive seasons, ultimately losing out to Whyteleafe and Phoenix Sports respectively The 2016-17 season finally brought success for AUFC who became league champions earning their place for promotion into the Bostik League. This was a much deserved reward for the hard work of the manager and the playing team and of course the team involved in the running of the football club and all it’s very loyal supporters. Ashford United’s management team consists of Tommy Warrilow and Alex O’Brien. Alongside are goalkeeping coach, Terry Sedge and physio Ben Coles. Great times ahead for Ashford United.
