Billy Wood

It feels like forever, finally welcome back to The TGS Pilot Field as we embark on our 21/22 adventure in the FA Trophy.

head two goals into the net to send the chirpy number 8 of Broadfields home and out of the FA Cup.

I would like to welcome AFC Dunstable’s management, staff, players, and supporters here today, in 2019 we made the trip up to their ground and was welcomed by fantastic hospitality. We hope you enjoy your day, of course without winning the fixture.

It’s been crazy at the club the last month. It’s busy, booming with activity across the club, which feels me with so much pride. I would like to thank all of our amazing sponsors, supporters and volunteers at this time as it’s certainly been testing for us all, but together we push through.

Our last fixture here was a real moment, with 1,214 in attendance we put on a display and got a vital three points to kick start our season. From that moment on we have gone on a nice winning streak, five games out of five and looking like the team we all know we are. The trip to the unknown Broadfields could’ve been a real slippery moment, a ‘banana skin moment’ as you will, however even when not at our best we dug in. It gave me massive delight to see the man mountain Gary Elphick

Two years ago I joined the club, lots of things have changed but the biggest for me is how vocal we are home and away. Let’s get behind Chris and the lads today, another cup run? OH GO ON THEN!!!

From the dugout

The Gaffer Good afternoon everyone. Thoroughly looking forward to being back at the Pilot Field for the first time in what seems forever! AFC Dunstable like ourselves have made a strong start to their campaign, and I’m sure will be looking for some sort of revenge following our 4-0 win over them a couple of years ago. We’re steadily improving and grinding out results without being particularly spectacular, we are a long way away from where we aim to be level wise, but if we can keep winning on the our journey to reaching our best version of ourselves, then great. Within touching distance of top spot with games in hand in the league, making good progress in the FA Cup, and looking to have a good crack at the FA Trophy …… another solid start to another season. It’s a positive kind of Groundhog Day! Looking forward to hearing the U’s support ….. looking forward to giving everyone something to cheer about! COYU’s ...

FA CUP MATCH REPORT By Ryan Segal @theryansegal

ELPHICK THE HERO

2 3 Saturday 18 September 2021

FA Cup

Ollie Black meant he was able to get an effort away, which found the bottom corner and sent the U’s fans behind the goal into raptures. The perfect start to the afternoon for the boys in claret. Just a few minutes later they came agonisingly close to a second – and showed their teeth in regards to their back to front play. An expert sliding challenge by Gary Elphick won the ball back deep in the U’s territory, and after a counter attack was half snuffed out, Black stepped up to release one of his monster throws, which was half punched by the goalkeeper, and met by Hasler, who drilled off of the far post and out. The chance to be two up after ten denied by a matter of inches. And they were made to pay a few minutes afterwards. The hosts knocked the ball around and released a through ball that caught the U’s backline flat footed, and Rico Clarke-Rowe calmly finished into the far corner to equalise and leave Hastings to ask questions of how they were allowed to create and finish an opportunity like that.

The FA Cup on Saturday gave us an emotional rollercoaster as the U’s got over the line away at Broadfields Utd. A second in two games for our newest goal machine, Ollie Black, and a Gary Elphick brace were enough to send the U’s through on a sweltering Surrey afternoon.

Whilst the U’s were the better team for the time after the equaliser, Broadfields showed a renewed sense of self belief, with loose balls and second balls ending up with the hosts more often than not. The U’s continued to pose a clear and present danger when in the final third, with Hasler having a deflected free kick saved by the Broadfields stopper Lincoln. Martin was also his usual tenacious self, linking well with Azeez on the opposite flank, whose cross was intercepted with Ben Pope lurking in the six yard box.

The U’s got the game underway, courtesy of Lanre Azeez, wearing number 15 today due to the return to the squad of Lloyd Dawes. And, I’d barely had the chance to set a timer going when Hastings won a free kick just inside the Broadfields half. Dixon lofted in the free kick, and it was flicked back by Gary Elphick, before a wonderful manoeuvre by

And, with ten minutes until half time, the U’s were made to rue their missed chances. A foul by Craig Stone (which saw him booked) just outside the box halted the Broadfields attack, but Rhys Ellis stepped up to bend the free kick into the top corner, leaving Rogers no chance and the visitors in a state of shock as Ellis reeled away in delight. The

2nd Round Qualifying Late drama in the Cup as U’s win in stoppage time.

hosts leading the tie for the first time. Before the interval the U’s had two more chances, both courtesy of Ben Pope. The first was more of a half chance in all honesty, as a bouncing through ball was hit on the half volley from distance and an unfriendly angle, and ended up in the barrier between the goal and the fans. In stoppage time Pope took over free kick duties, and his effort was well hit, but rattled the pole holding up the net, as opposed to the net itself. And with that, the U’s went into the dressing room knowing they had a big task on their hands. The second half started differently to the first, as was to be expected with the scenario that was being faced. The U’s started with a much higher line than 45 minutes prior, trying to ramp up the pressure on the hosts early on in the half. This meant that Broadfields were able to play long balls for their wingers to chase, but fortunately the U’s defensive coverage was good enough that, when they succeeded, they were just as quickly defended. However, at the other end, things just weren’t clicking as we’ve seen them do so many times. Haslers trademark through balls were being read and intercepted every time, the touches were that inch too far ahead and were being intercepted and Broadfields were generally playing better football and looking more dangerous. It started to feel like it just wasn’t going to be the U’s day, particularly when substitute Lloyd Dawes headed over from close range. They were huffing and puffing as Broadfields sat back to try and complete the cupset. But, where there’s a Pogue, there’s a way. King Kenny was brought on for Marcus Goldsmith to bolster the numbers in the box, ahead of the influx of balls we knew we were going to see in the final few minutes. He was brought on just before an Ollie Black throw, and immediately made

a nuisance of himself, which meant Gary Elphick was able to get his experienced head to the ball, which connected perfectly and hit the side netting, but the right side of the woodwork. Level. Celebrations from the supporters (who were, as usual, unreal), but the ball was raced back to the centre spot, as the U’s wanted to avoid a Tuesday FA Cup night under the lights at the TGS Pilot Field in their already hectic schedule.

Jack Dixon challenges his opposite number 8 who had a lot to say during the game!

And then, it came. The anger. The pressure. (Yes, that is a line from Paralyzed by Dream Theater. Couldn’t resist.) A Dave Martin corner, a slight scramble, the roof of net bulges. As Hastings celebrated, there was mass confusion, as the linesman’s flag being raised had coincided with a Broadfields player hitting the deck. However, the linesman was flagging to confirm the ball had crossed the line, and not for an infringement. Gary Elphick and his beautiful bonce had done it.

Ollie Black strikes United’s first goal.

Gut Feeling Simon Stoddart My waffle and opinions, I don't speak for Hastings United. Personal observations on the world of semi-pro football and sport in general.

WHO CAME OVER THE HILL! One of the best songs from the Hastings Barmy Army for me is the “Who's that coming over the hill” rendition when Gary Elphick pops up for penalty box duty at corners, free kicks and Ollie Black Mark 1's. And sure enough, there he was again last weekend helping United into the 3rd qualifying round of the FA Cup as a 1-2 deficit at step 5 Broadfields Utd was turned into a last gasp 3-2 win. As for Ollie, nowhere near goal scoring status, then two games on the trot. Get in there!

HARDENHUISH PARK

Covid 19 has pre-occupied the world this last 18 months. Sam Hasler reminds us of some of the other health issues out there.

Check out these floodlights at the Navhabor Stadium in Uzbekistan. I suspect that our away ground specialist, tick that box Phil Donaldson, hasn't made it there yet?

Where? Chippenham Town of National South await in the next round of the FA Cup. They beat Poole Town 1-0 in a replay on Tuesday. Yet another away tie for United.

Dunstable away, 17 August 1991. A season never to be forgotten as Hastings Town won the division by 13 points, going up with Weymouth.

We all try to capture that goal on our mobile cameras, best one for me is Dan Willett's getting the Frannie Collin goal at Dorking in the semi-final play-off 4 seasons ago. I managed to get the opener against Whitehawk.

LUCRATIVE DISTRACTION

RIP JIMMY GREAVES

And that's exactly what the FA Cup is. Lucrative as in the £7069 banked so far from the three wins – yea, 7 grand is pretty insignificant to a top level Pro, but a welcome deposit to any step 4 semi pro club's bank account. £5625 awaits the winners of our tie at Chippenham next weekend. And the distraction element is all about the league campaign which as of last weekend saw us go into arrears with clubs above us no longer in the FA Cup getting back to Isthmian SE business. Haywards Heath went top with a 2-1 win over previous leaders Ashford United who are here on Tuesday evening.

So sad to hear he's gone. Never played enough games for England, 44 goals in 57 appearances was a sensational return. He was playing semi pro football for Barnet way way back in the late 1970s, Barnet were here for a Southern League game and a big crowd was at the Pilot Field to see Greavesie who – was a no show! He was down with flu, I seem to recall. Bit like the mid 90s when Nottingham Forest sent a first team squad down as part of the Paul Smith transfer deal – all the big names except the biggest of all – no Stuart Pearce! .

Two clubs left unbeaten now, not that it really means anything at this early stage in the season – Haywards Heath and Ramsgate who hammered Sevenoaks 5-0. Herne Bay beat Corinthian 1-0 and Cray Valley PM won 3-1 at Three Bridges. Ramsgate have made a better start than most people expected as we found to our cost very recently. There is always a side that enters a promotion campaign unexpectedy, early indications are pointing at Ramsgate.

Well, not quite. It's AFC Dunstable who we played just about two years ago in a Trophy tie at Creasey Park. And there was Dunstable who we used to encounter back in our Southern League South days – 30 years ago, and more. You fellow old timers will recall the memorable start to that promotion season of 1991-92, a visit to Creasey Park to kick off that campaign, a 4-0 win with 2 goals for Andy Blondrage and one each for Sticky Willard and Paul Giles. And it was 4-0 again two seasons ago in that Trophy tie, two for Ben Pope and one each for Sam Adams and Davide Rodari.

On the FA Cup front, special mention for Whitehawk who are having a horrendous early days league campaign. Their last league game saw them mullahed 6-1 at Chichester having lost their preceeding game 4-1 at home to Ashford. On top of the defeat here on the August Bank Holiday. Whitehawk took that awful start to the season with them to National South Slough and promptly won 3-1 at a team two levels higher. That's knock out football for you.

DUNSTABLE AGAIN

AFC Dunstable currently do their business in the Southern League's Central Division and have made a very reasonable start, almost identical to United's. Only conceded three times so we will have our work cut out today. They will also be be involved in the FA Cup next weekend, away to Southern Central Premier, Peterborough Sports, who currently top that division.

MILLBANK MOVES

NUTS AND BOLTS SIGN FRIEND

Whitstable Town have announced that striker Aaron Millbank has departed the Belmont for the club's biggest rivals, Herne Bay. Millbank moved to Whitstable from Ramsgate in August 2019, making thirty-nine appearances and scoring fifteen goals during that first campaign, cut short by covid. He managed another four goals from nine games last season. Millbank came through the youth ranks at Gillingham, but played the vast majority of his football for the Rams, on loan initially and then permanently from 2016 to 2019. Aaron also had some time at Bay on loan from the Gills during 2012-13.

Former Margate and Folkestone Invicta captain Liam Friend has been announced as a new arrival at Hartsdown Park. Liam was with Invicta for more than a decade, a period which cemented him in club folklore and saw him win two promotions. He moved on to Margate, and became a mainstay of the Blues defence before moving on to Ramsgate in the summer of 2019. He made twenty nine appearances during our abortive 2019-20 season, and then went back to Margate for the 20-21 campaign, making eleven appearances before our world fell apart again. He has since been turning out for Chatham Town.

Gary Elphick turns away from goal to celebrate after scoring an injury time winner last Saturday in the FA Cup 2nd Round Qualifying against Broadfields United. His second goal of the match!

STEVE HEATH

LEON CASHMAN

MATT LANGSTON

Steve joined the club midway through the 2013-14 season. The 1st team was in disarray due to the former management duo resigning. Many of the players decided to leave, so Steve had a massive rebuilding job to do.

Leon recently retired from the game and as he is so highly thought of, he naturally became a coach at AFC before being announced as assistant manager in the summer of 2021. A former AFC Dunstable player, he knows the club as well as anyone. Former playing clubs include Corby Town and Havant & Waterlooville. Has also served in and represented the Royal Navy at football.

Langers had a very impressive non-league playing career. He turned out for many Conference clubs (now National League). He was made famous for a day, when he scored the only goal for Histon against Leeds United in the FA Cup, which Histon won 1-0 back in 2008/09, which was televised live on ITV.

Manager

He guided the team to a mid-table position in the SSMFL Premier and handed so many youngsters 1st team debuts. 2014-15 season saw him re-strengthen the side which saw us finish 3rd in the league. The following season the club went all out to clinch the Premier Division title and success was achieved. In Steve’s and the club’s first attempt at step 4, a very respectful 7th place was secured, and the Bedfordshire Senior Cup was won. At the beginning of this 2017-18, a 2-0 win over Luton Town saw the club lift the Bedfordshire Premier Cup. In the 2018/19 season Steve guided the club to 5th in the league and a play-off spot. A defeat in the semi-final did not take away from what he achieved.

AFC DUNSTABLE HISTORY AFC Dunstable started life as Old Dunstablians Football Club in 1981. The name Old Dunstablians originated from an organisation formed in 1888 for old boys from Dunstable Grammar School. The most famous member of the club is Hollywood actor Gary Cooper, who attended the school in the early 1900’s. When the Grammar School closed and Manshead School opened they took over the mantle but the old boys club was in decline. In 1981 the head teacher was asked if he could re-launch the name, hence the football club was born. By 1988 after its centenary, the Old Dunstablians Club ceased to exist, but the football club carried on in commemoration and to this day still bears the club crest on its badge. The club started in the Dunstable Alliance Football League for a couple of seasons then moved onto the Luton District and South Bedfordshire League in 1983. Still playing at Manshead School with the 1st team and reserves, success was limited with the 1st team runners up twice in Division One and runners up in the William

Pease Cup. While in the Luton League though the 1st team did land the Bedfordshire Junior Cup beating Leighton Athletic on penalties in 1989/90 season. With the club using Dunstable Town Cricket Club as their social base in Bull Pond Lane, the cricket club was looking to move to a larger site in Totternhoe and when the new club was opened in 1994, a football pitch was accommodated, so the football club moved there from Manshead School. An improvement in facilities gave the club a chance to apply to join the South Midlands League in 1995. Accepted into the then Division One (Premier and Senior Divisions were the higher divisions) the club struggled, as they flirted with being relegated straight back to the Luton League in the first 2 seasons. Going through new managers every season, they finally started to gain some consolidation and in season 2001/02 the 1st team finished 4th in the league and won the Division One Cup. The following season they just missed out of the title, which was

now named Division Two. Looking to go one better they finally clinched the title the next season and was runners up in the Division Two Cup. Ground Grading issues were now starting to stop the team from getting promoted, as two ground sharing agreements were turned down by the league. This was now the start of a trophy laden period, as the Division Two title again was secured and backto-back Bedfordshire Senior Trophy’s. Added to that, the Division Two Cup was won again. In 2003/04 the club decided to launch its youth policy and when the Under 15’s were runners up in the Chiltern Youth league, it started on the path to work its way through the FA Charter Standard. They achieved Adult status in 2003/04. The club then made the decision to change its name to AFC Dunstable (when the prefix AFC was not as prevalent as it is nowadays), so not to get confused with the local rugby club, as the club started to grow and the name was more associated to a football club. The club kept the name The OD’s, as their nickname. The youth setup was awarded the

Charter Standard in 2005/06. The next big step was to become a Development Club and a great deal of work saw the club achieve this in 2007. Next up was a goal to become a FA Charter Standard Community Club and 2008 saw the club achieve this. In that time the club has been awarded the Development Club Of The Year in 2008 and the Community Club Of The Year in 2009. The club now runs over 30 teams. The Bedfordshire Football Association approached the club to become partners in the new Creasey Park Community Football Centre in 2008 and this gave them the chance to move the 1st team to Creasey Park and apply for promotion to Division One for the start of the 2009/10 season, which was accepted. The team finished a very creditable 5th in its first season at the higher level. History was made in the 2010/11 season, as the team was accepted to participate in the FA Vase. A fine run through to the 2nd Round Proper was achieved. Looking to improve on the league position the previous season, the team went all out for promotion and finished runners up in the league and gained promotion to the Premier Division at their 2nd attempt. The SSMFL Division One Cup was won too Now with the team in the SSMFL Premier Division and entered the FA Cup for the 2011/12 season, they finished a fine 3rd in the league. In the 2012/13 season the team consolidated in the Premier Division and finished a very respectable 8th. Their run in the FA Cup saw them get through 3 rounds eventually going out to Northwood after a replay. The team were being managed by the most successful pair in the

club’s history; Alex Butler and Dermot Butler, but they decided to step down after 9 years at the helm halfway through 2013/14 season. This left the team in disarray, which saw many stalwarts of the team leave. The club decided to appoint current manager Steve Heath and the club went on a re-building exercise.

and it looked like the title ambitions had faded. That would be the last time AFC tasted defeat in the league. Hoddesdon Town were now becoming a title contender and it was a 3-horse race. With 7 games left, the team went top of the league and never looked back and won the league by 13 points.

2014/15 saw the team secure 3rd place in the SSMFL Premier Division as they challenged for the title all season. They also equalled their best run in the FA Vase getting to the 3rd Round proper.

The 2016/17 season saw them compete in the Southern League Central Division, a position they never ever thought they would see the club at. They competed nearly all season in a playoff place but just missed out by 3 points. The team though did pick up some silverware winning the prestigious Bedfordshire Senior Cup 2-0 against Dunstable Town at Kenilworth Road. The beginning of this season, the Bedfordshire Premier Cup was also won.

2015/16 was the season that the team broke all club records. Before clinching the SSMFL Premier Division title, they progressed through 2 rounds of the FA Cup before finally going out to Ryman Premier leaders at the time Leiston 1-0 in the 1st Qualifying Round. The FA Vase was a great ride as the team made it to the 4th Round proper. Unfortunately, we drew phoenix club Salisbury who had competed in the Conference Premier only two seasons previous but had been demoted to step 5. Going out 3-0, Salisbury made it all the way to the semi-final. The league campaign was an unbelievable roller coaster ride. As the season got underway, it was becoming apparent that quite a few teams were vying for the title. As the season reached October, only 5 points separated the top 6. By Christmas it looked like London Colney were starting to break away going 5 points clear. The chasing pack were bunching up behind as only 6 points was the difference between 2nd and 7th. When the team lost to a lastminute penalty to Biggleswade United on January 2nd, they went 8 points behind London Colney

After only their 2nd season at step 4, 2017/18 saw them top the table at the start of the season. They occupied a play-off place all season, which in the end saw them finish 5th. So, a semifinal play-off berth was achieved and they came up against Hartley Wintney. A 2-0 loss in North Hampshire ended their season but what a great experience it was. 2018/19 season saw them make it 3 years in succession to play at step 4. It was probably their most challenging as they stuttered at the start of the season. At Christmas they were flirting with relegation but turned the corner and went on a decent run that saw them looking at an outside chance of a play-off spot, but they fell away and finished 10th. With the club firmly established at step 4 everyone is looking forward to the 2021/22 season and the challenges that it will bring.

RYAN FRATER

LUKE ABRAHAM

SAM McCLELLAND

A highly experienced player, who has many clubs to his name. A great signing for the club in the 2018/19 season. Frater picked up a championship medal for Royston Town after the club won the Evo-Stik Southern League Central three seasons ago.

This will be Luke’s third season back with AFC after a 4 season stay at Arlesey Town. Before that, he has had an array of clubs including Aylesbury FC, Chesham Utd and Dunstable Town.

Sam is another that is no stranger to Creasey Park as he too is a product of the AFC Dunstable youth setup. Returned to the club last season after playing for Dunstable Town.

DAN GREEN

LEWIS FERRELL

ALASAN ANN

GEDEON OKITO

Joined the club in January 2019 after a couple of seasons with Welwyn Garden City. A tall, commanding goalkeeper, he also counts Biggleswade FC as one of his former clubs.

Signed in the summer of 2021 having had spells at clubs including Biggleswade Town and Braintree Town. Has already put in a series of fine performances in pre-season. Not afraid to put the boot in and offers both experience and stability in defence.

Ann spent the last 3 years at York University studying physiotherapy. Whilst in York he played for Selby Town of the Northern Counties East league. Has already played in several positions and his versatility will make him a key member of the team this year.

Gedeon is an energetic left back who played against us for Cambridge City in a preseason friendly last season. Previous clubs include Dunstable Town and Banbury United. Adds competition to an already strong defensive unit.

JAMIE HEAD

NEWMAN CARNEY

DYLAN BAKER

BRETT LONGDEN

Jamie returns to the club having had a spell away from Creasey Park at clubs including Bedford Town and Cambridge City. He is another successful product of the AFC Dunstable youth setup.

Joined AFC on a month’s loan from Dunstable Town at the beginning of 2014 but decided to stay with the club. An ex-professional with Luton Town when he was 18, he is one of the youngest players to represent the Hatters. Newman is one of 3 ex-Luton Town players in the squad.

One of several players in their late teens/early twenties that will be looking to make a starting place their own. A regular starter during pre-season, Baker will be hoping his selection in the team continues for the foreseeable future.

Brett returned to AFC from Bedford Town last season, where he had spent the past couple of seasons, having signed for them from us in the close season of 2018. A combative right back, his previous clubs include St Ives Town, Chesham United, St Neots Town and Luton Town

Development team graduate that will be looking to play regular first team football this coming season. Chips in with the odd goal too.

Signed Southern League forms for AFC in the summer having spent a couple of seasons at Sholing FC whilst studying on the south coast. A ball winning midfielder that also looks to make things happen going forward.

The clubs record goal scorer with over 250 goals to his name and now record appearance maker. First turned out for the club at 15. Has had a couple of spells away from the club but always returns. As you can imagine, many clubs chase his signature in close season.

Jack signed in pre-season from Dunstable Town, after impressing in a pre-season friendly playing against AFC. Tough-tackling, hardworking midfielder, it is difficult to believe Jack is so young with the mature performances he regularly puts in.

Another Summer 2021 recruit, Hankins signed from Creasey Park rivals Dunstable Town. Has already been on the scoresheet in pre-season and will look to take that into the regular season. Offers more to the forward line than just goals.

FA Trophy

1st Round Qualifying A 4 – 0 away win at AFC Dunstable just reward for a game United controlled from start to finish. Leading 1 – 0 at half-time through an AFC Dunstable own goal, United put their dominance onto the scoresheet with three second-half goals from Sam Adams, Ben Pope and Davide Rodari. This FA Trophy first qualifying round was played in cold, wet and windy conditions. The playing surface though was fine and United quickly settled into their style of measured passing. On four minutes Ryan Worrall recycled the ball to Jack Dixon who passed inside the fullback for Jake Elliott to run onto and fire in a low cross, a fraction in front of Pope’s outstretched boot. This set the tone and tempo for the game which United maintained throughout. They created several more shooting opportunities. Dixon leapt to pull down a loose throw-out from the Dunstable goalkeeper giving Pope the chance to strike a shot which was blocked. More excellent play between Dixon and Adams set up Craig Stone who thumped a shot from 25 yards close to the top corner. Stone then sought out Daniel Ajakaiye with a long ball over the fullback, superbly controlled and his low cross was cleverly back-heeled by Pope, saved by the keeper’s feet.

15 minutes in and United were on top, playing confident and incisive football. There was no let-up from United. Worrall cut the ball out in midfield and released Pope who shot from 20 yards straight at the keeper. Dixon continued to be heavily involved in the centre of midfield. He collected the ball on half-way and with nifty footwork weaved his way through three men before giving Pope another sight of goal, again though he found the keeper’s gloves. The deserved breakthrough arrived on 38 minutes. Lanre Azeez and Pope manoeuvred United upfield with a double set of one-two’s enabling Dixon to play the ball wide to Elliott. His low hard cross was turned into his own net by Fyrer, under pressure from Pope. Dunstable fashioned a chance of their own just before half-time. Crawley’s cross wobbled in the wind and fell to Elliot, who fired into the side-netting. With the rain still pouring, the second-half started in the same vein as the first. Five minutes on the clock and United doubled their lead. Dixon and Azeez created space for Pope who waited for then found the overlapping Elliott. His cross from the by-line picked out Adams who slotted into the corner with minimum fuss. United continued to retain possession. Dixon and Pope combined on the left wing passing their way around defenders before Pope’s cross was headed wide by Azeez. Midway through the half Dunstable had a chance to half the deficit. A corner was only half-cleared to Elliot who hit a good shot which Louis Rogers tipped over the bar. From the resulting corner Rogers punched clear, picked up by Ajakaiye and through to Azeez on a lightening break. His shot was saved for a corner. After repelling a series of Dunstable corners it was United who forged further ahead. Sam Beale’s throw into Azeez’s feet allowed

him to create space for a floated cross. The ball dropped perfectly for Pope to swivel and power a leftfooted volley into the corner. United’s travelling supporters deemed this worthy of even louder cheers and a short period of barechested shirt waving. Three goals to the good but United were not yet satisfied. Two quick breakaway chances followed. Dixon astutely set Ajakaiye free through the middle only to have his shot blocked by the keeper. Azeez then ran onto another through ball and hit a shot from 20 yards which the keeper pushed over for a corner. Three could easily have been four or five. In the final minutes, with Dunstable pushing men forward looking for a consolation, Rodari battled hard with the centre-half and sprinted clear to hit home United’s fourth. Time for one more chance, Dixon headed just wide from Sam Beale’s inviting cross. Not to worry, the icing was already on this cake. United march onto the next qualifying round. A top-quality and complete performance from United. Four goals and a clean-sheet. They took the game to the hosts from the kick-off and restricted a team, who have scored 29 league goals in ten games, to half-chances, corners and set-pieces. Despite the weather United’s supporters had a raucous afternoon, fully appreciated by all the players who walked along the barrier behind the goal to shake their hands.
