WELCOME Good afternoon all. Welcome to the Pilot Field for today’s BetVictor Isthmian League Division One South East match against Surrey based, Whyteleafe FC. We extend a warm welcome to the officials, players and supporters of our visitors. We hope they have an enjoyable afternoon, and wish them a safe return trip, but hopefully on this, our first meeting of the season, it is a ‘pointless’ encounter for them. A similar warm welcome is extended to the three match officials, Referee Nick Dunn and his two Assistants, Liam Vitoria and Joshua Smith. We return to Pilot Field action this afternoon after a 2-1 FA Cup win over Broadbridge Heath and a 0-0 away draw, last Saturday, at East Grinstead Town. Today’s visitors currently sit in the top play-off spot, at 2nd position in the league table, with 7 points from 3 matches. Very, very early days yet of course but I suspect they will be up amongst the league leaders as we enter that last month of the season. I’m sure today’s encounter with an unbeaten Whyteleafe side will provide an entertaining contest. United will certainly need to be on top form for us to collect all three points. Amelie Randall-Smith (Aged 11) Amelie is a quiet football fan, unlike her noisy brothers. She has watched the game from a toddler with her Dad. She has been to Wembley, West Ham, The Amex and the new White Hart Lane! Amelie likes the live game, especially at the Pilot Field and enjoys a kickabout with the players. Maybe one day she may join a team ... who knows!! She is excited about the next two weeks as a mascot.

Reuben (Aged 9) & Henry (Aged 6) Randall-Smith Reuben is football mad, he loves the statistics of a game and is very knowledgeable about all the Premier league and all the HUFC players. He has been a mascot a few times now and loves it. He is counting the days to the big Man Utd match next month.
Henry is the most crazy boy about the game, morning, noon and night it's football football football he loves the Pilot Field and the boys. He follows the match from the 1st minute to the 90th and as for being mascot and meeting the players he is on cloud 9. He has mentioned meeting Chris and the boys to everyone we know. One day he will play on that pitch!!

Hastings United Independent Supporters Club is an all new club based on the old supporters’ group, but working in a new way alongside Hastings United Football Club. It is also affiliated to the Football Supporters’ Association. The club has a committee of volunteers but needs supporters to come on board. “We would like to run HUISC the new way of supporters’ clubs, we have to follow a blueprint, but with a new positivity.” The Supporters’ Club has come about following the positive atmosphere generated by Hastings’ third place finish in the Bostik League South East Division last season and with the support of manager Chris Agutter. YOUR FAVOURITE BETVICTOR ISTHMIAN GROUND As part of our Supporters prediction series we've been asking you to name your favourite BetVictor Isthmian away ground. It's time to find out who won. For three years now we have been asking Isthmian League supporters to name their favourite away grounds, as part of our Supporters prediction series. We'll never get bored of hearing your tales of wonderful hospitality, and we're delighted to confirm that twenty-two different destinations were named as favourites this time around - more than ever before. We're not going to list all twenty-two, but we thought we'd bring you the top five - and we'll do it, in time honoured tradition, in reverse order.
5th Place: TOOTING & MITCHAM UNITED You spoke of the hospitality, and the ample parking, but the main topic of conversation where Imperial Fields was concerned was the food! Jamaican Barbecue Jerk Chicken is apparently compulsory.
4th Place: AVELEY Parkside was highly rated for its fabulous facilities, and the fact that you don't have to struggle to find a parking space. And it didn't seem to matter whether Aveley or Grays Athletic were your hosts, you liked it just the same.
3rd Place: BURY TOWN Your love for Ram Meadow is mainly about its history. "A fabulous old ground," was the usual remark, "with a great atmosphere," It is, and it has!
Runner-Up: AFC SUDBURY The King's Marsh Stadium was far and away your favourite North Division ground, and whilst you found it aesthetically pleasing and were delighted by the facilities, those weren't the prime reasons for your votes. Time and again you spoke of the warm welcome and the friendly atmosphere, and it's quite clear that whatever the Yellows are doing to make visiting fans feel at home, they are remarkably good at it - and that it is greatly appreciated.
Winners: LEWES Lewes recently won the Football Supporters Association ‘Away Day of the Season’ Award for the whole of Step Three, so it's no surprise that they win our poll for the third year in succession. So many of our supporters wax lyrical about a visit to the Dripping Pan that it seems to almost be taking on mythical status - even some people who haven't yet visited tried to name it their favourite ground! We discounted those votes, but it really didn't make any difference to the outcome. Congratulations to the Rooks, once again!

The grim tidings for Bury confirmed. Reform and go again
GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart A light hearted – and on many occasions, anything but light hearted, look at life here in what is now known as the BetVictor Isthmian League's South Eastern Division. My rants and raves are not connected with the club in any way.
WORTHING
Wow. Even an old not bothered about the FA Cup curmudgeon like me raised an eyebrow or two at seeing the 1st Qualifying Round draw that sees Messrs Agutter and Hinshelwood up and at each other next week. That is quite a draw and should be good for a decent gate. Must admit that waiting to see who we get in the next round is always of interest and this is a good’un. This afternoon's opposition will also be at home to an Isthmian Premier outfit in the form of Merstham. Never a bad thing testing yourself against higher league opposition and Worthing are a well followed side these days so 700-800 could present themselves next weekend. And a special mention for Little Common who will be taking on Southern Premier Hendon next weekend. Remember us beating them here on our way to the 1st Round Proper back in 2002-2003? Go well boys – especially Crutts.
30 DEGREES AT THE GAC 166 punters braved the Bank Holiday heat at East Grinstead where, in the end, 0-0 was probably just about right. Having said that, it could all have been sewn up by half-time with the home keeper by far the busier. Seeing that Ashford hammered Three Bridges 5-0 not many miles away added to the frustration but given that East Grinstead doubled us last season, then leaving the GAC Stadium with a point and a clean sheet wasn't such a bad thing. The league table is meaningless till the end of October or so by which time we will have a much better idea of how things are going.

BURY What is it about your football club? What is it? We've had ups and downs here, indeed many semi-pro clubs go through the mangle. But it's now manifesting itself in the professional game and you cannot have failed to see what's been going on at Bury recently. And bizzarely, all their trials and tribulations have come following promotion from EFL2. When, Aldershot, Maidstone, Newport County went belly up they were all in the bottom tier – what has happened to Bury is something else. And the bad news could just keep coming not far from Gigg Lane with Bolton Wanderers – a Premier League club as recently as 2012 – in all kinds of trouble. There was also the Wimbledon/Milton Keynes Dons saga which saw the formation of AFC Wimbledon. They attracted our best home league gate in Hastings United mark 2 days back in February 2005 when 1834 were here for a 1-1 draw as they marched straight through the division. I recall the turmoil here as the Lottery winner owner era came to an end. Relegation by rulebook in 1999, relegation the traditional way in 2003, not knowing if the club was going to survive, the ups and downs next door, missing out in 2003-2004 on a golden opportunity to get Southern Premier football here again when the FA added Conference South and North to the semi-pro game – that 03-04 season was utterly dire with salt rubbed in the wound as several of our explayers did the business just along the coast at Eastbourne Borough. You have to feel for the supporters of Bury – and may well have to for Bolton too if things don't work out there. It's not much consolation just now but they can start again just like Aldershot, Maidstone, Newport County and AFC Wimbledon did. They'll have to start way down at step 5 – the level below us, maybe step 6 even. But those four clubs all did that and climbed back to the Football League apart from Maidstone who got as far as the National League top tier. In other words, things can eventually work out but it takes time. Hopefully Bury will start again next season with their results in the Non-League Paper. Good luck to them.

WHYTELEAFE Mixed fortunes against them last season. Lost 2-4 here in the FA Trophy, 0-2 at their place in the league but redressed it somewhat with a 3-0 win here. Yes yes yes it's a big one here next week but today is what the season is really all about. You can't beat three points as a reward.

THE VISITORS HISTORY
WHYTELEAFE FC
FORMATIVE YEARS Prior to the Second World War there were several teams that competed locally using the Whyteleafe name, notably Whyteleafe Junior FC and Whyteleafe Albion. Whyteleafe Albion competed for many years but the club folded several years before the Second World War. A new club, simply called Whyteleafe FC, was formed in 1946. The new club commenced Junior football as members of the Caterham and Edenbridge, the Thornton Heath & District and the Croydon Leagues. Of these early years season 1951/52, was the most successful, with a strong 'Leafe line-up becoming Thornton Heath League champions, winners of two local charity cups and runners-up in both the Surrey County Junior Cup and the League Cup. Two years later they progressed to the Surrey County Intermediate League (Eastern Division) and were Division 1 champions in 1955/6. 1958 saw the significant transition from 'Junior' to 'Senior' status and entry into the Surrey Senior League. This change required the club to move from the New Barn Lane School ground, which was inadequate for senior football, and with a dynamic committee under the leadership of Secretary Dick Baxendine, the club purchased approximately four acres of farmland in nearby Church Road, where the club still play today. The original stand at Whyteleafe's old ground is still used by Kenley Primary School and is clearly visible from Valley Road about half a mile north of the current ground.
NEW GROUND, NEW START Play commenced on the new ground in season 1959/60, and in the early sixties the club gained minor rewards with the reserve team playing under the guidance of former Crystal Palace hero Roy Greenwood. The next success came as the 1960s drew to a close which saw 'Leafe as Surrey Senior League Champions and runners-up in the League Cup. In the 1970s the floodlight training area and stand

were built and in 1975 the club moved into the London Spartan League before joined the Athenian League in 1981. The main pitch floodlights were installed and the dressing rooms were moved to their current location in the early 1980s In the 1984/85 season, a league reorganisation saw the club enter Division Two South of the Isthmian League. In November 1986 Steve Kember joined the club as Manager having been associated with the club for some years previously when with Crystal Palace, with whom he had won considerable success. In two successive seasons Kember engineered the club through to the third qualifying round of the FA Cup on two occasions. A highly successful team in 1988/89 saw the club win promotion as runners-up in Division Two South to Division One. Steve Kember resigned in July 1993 and returned to Crystal Palace as a coach and after several successful and well-publicised stints as Caretaker Manager. Paul Hinshelwood briefly held the reins following Steve's departure and, following the resignation of his assistant Keith Wilkinson in October 1993, Lee Richardson became assistant manager and 1st team coach.
THE RICHARDSON YEARS August 1994 saw Richardson appointed manager. This was a very popular appointment, as Lee had been associated with the club on and off since 1975, playing in excess of 400 games for the club. Season 1998/99 proved to be very mixed, with the club achieving good cup results, losing to Welling Utd in sight of a first round visit to Bristol Rovers in the FA Cup, and winning through to the last 32 in the FA Trophy, going out to the eventual winners Kingstonian in front of a then record home crowd of 945. But a season of chronic injury saw 'Leafe struggle to survive in the league and avoided relegation by winning the last game of the season.
1999/2000 proved the most momentous in the club's history. For the first time ever the club reached the 1st Round proper of the FA Cup when a crowd of 2,164, easily beat the previous season's record, in a match which saw them hold league opponents Chester City to a 0-0 draw before going down 1-3 in a replay at Chester. An imposing new stand was built at the top end of the ground just in time for the big match thanks to a superb effort from all involved with the club. The years that followed never lived up to 1999 and the club went into a slow but steady decline in fortunes.
MANAGERIAL CHANGES In 2002 the team hit a low ebb at Bracknell at Christmas, where they suffered a heavy defeat that prompted Richardson's resignation. Stuart Massey held the reins until October 2006 and after a spell with chairman Mark Coote picking the team, former Crystal Palace striker Dave Swindlehurst joined the club in December. The team did reasonably well under Swindlehurst, he led them to a comfortable mid-table position and the club's first cup final in 20 years. Leafe lost their Surrey Senior Cup final to Merstham at Imber Court and this proved to be Swindlehurst last game in charge. Stuart Massey was re-appointed Whyteleafe manager ahead of the 2008/09 season but only for a relatively short spell.
ALL CHANGE AGAIN The winter of 2009/10 was hard one and bad weather hit hard on the club's finances. Massey resigned, former AFC Wimbledon and Chipstead manager Nicky English took over in the summer of 2010. Despite the dire financial position the club found itself in English’s team had a purple patch after Christmas 2010, which included a remarkable 5-4 victory at eventual champions Met Police, and steered themselves away from relegation. Nicky's hard work and commitment was never in doubt, but things just didn't work, and in the following year he left the club. In January 2012 Steve Griffin was given the tough job of catching up 20th placed side Burgess Hill Town when 12 point adrift. The appointment coincided with a change in club constitution which saw Mark Coote become ownerchairman (as opposed to elected-chairman). The change gives the Club renewed hope of future development and progression yet the 2011/12 season ended in bitter disappointment and the club’s first relegation in its history despite drawing level with Burgess Hill at one point and only losing to an
extraordinary result by the Hillians against Dulwich Hamlet.
WHAT GOES DOWN... After a season of moderate success in the Kent League, and being badly injured in a car accident, in the summer of 2013 Griffin stood down and former Whyteleafe player and Croydon manager John Fowler joined the club. Fowler built a completely new team in a very short time and one that made an immediate impact. In a memorable season for the club, the team went on to win the newly named Southern Counties East League by a clear 11 points and amongst much celebration the team rejoined the Isthmian League of which they had been members for 28 of the preceding 30 years. The first year back in the Ryman League was also momentous and the team belied expectation finishing in fifth place only to lose out in a play-off match at Folkestone. Leafe truggled to repeat this achievement the following year and in 2016, John Fowler decided he had taken the team as far as he could and stood down. Former Farnborough assistant manager Leigh Dynan took over in October and began a period of major squad reconstruction. Leigh guided the club to 14th place having picked up 64 points along the way. Leigh Dynan started the 2017/2018 season in strong fashion boasting some impressive pre-season results against teams from the league above with emphatic wins coming against Merstham and Dulwich Hamlet. The league season started strongly also with the club only suffering only two defeats in our first twelve games. Leigh resigned in October 2017 after a 1-1 draw at Church Road against Greenwich Borough. Leigh left and took up the hot seat at Kingstonian Football Club. The management duo of John Scarborough and Paul Dale guided the club for the remainder of the 2017/2018 season finishing in 8th position and narrowly missing out on the Bostik South play-offs. John Scarborough and Paul Dale both stepped down in the summer of 2018 due to other commitments. For the start of the 2018/19 season young manager Harry Hudson and his assistant Calum McFarlane were appointed following a successful stint at Croydon FC, and set up a young, enthusiastic side to take the Leafe forward. After a brilliant start that saw them top of the table in the first month, the Leafe eventually finished just outside of the play-off positions in the 8th place. They will be looking to reinforce the team for 201920 and take the team one step further.

HYTHE BRING IN GILLS MIDFIELDER Former Margate man arrives at Reachfields. Hythe Town have announced the signing of former Gillingham midfielder Aaron Simpson. Aaron won't be unknown to Isthmian audiences, as he made eleven appearances whilst on loan at Margate from the Gills in 2017-18; and he won't be unknown to the Reachfields faithful either, as he played fleetingly during pre-season. He has also been on trial at Aldershot.
Haywards Heath Town sit at the top of the South East table, but they managed only a point as they travelled to Whitehawk. They were eight minutes from claiming all three, Trevor McCreadie putting them ahead from the spot after sixty-six minutes, but Connor Tighe got the equaliser to keep the Hawks unbeaten. Whyteleafe are in second, and they walloped Guernsey four-one. A Ronald Sobowale hat-trick and a goal from Emmanuel Mensah made the difference, although Ross Allen got one back for the Green Lions from the spot. An own goal turned out to be the only goal of the game in the match between Cray Valley PM and Sevenoaks Town, and Oaks scored it, so Cray took the points. The new boys move up to third. Ashford United were the days big winners, and sit fourth after walloping Three Bridges five-nil at Jubilee Field. David Smith got four of them, and Levi Gold added the fifth, 11 minutes from the end.
His signing might be something of a coup for the Cannons, as Gills boss Steve Evans didn't want him to leave - and indeed offered him a new deal. Priestfield's loss might well be Reachfields gain.
VCD Athletic travelled for sixty seconds to get to Mayplace Road, home of neighbours Phoenix Sports, and picked up both three points and local bragging rights as Henry Ikeije and Charlie MacDonald scored on nine and twenty-seven minutes. Jack Hopkins got one back for Sports, but it wasn’t enough.

City played their first ever Isthmian League derby match as they travelled to Burgess Hill Town, and very much enjoyed the experience, goals from Lloyd Rowlatt and Scott Jones giving them a two-one win. Warren Mfula got the consolation for the Hillians, who are thirteenth.
Hythe Town were looking to bounce back from an FA Cup thrashing. In the South East Division Faversham Town, still looking for their first victory of the season, entertained a Hythe Town side looking to bounce back from their 5-0 FA Cup thrashing at Cray Wanderers on Sunday 25th August. For eighty-nine minutes neither side could find a breakthrough, and then Town got that first win, courtesy of a last-gasp goal from Makhosini Khanye. Faversham leapfrog their visitors, rising to twelfth place. Even the support of England cricketer Joe Denly, fresh from that half-century against the Aussies on Sunday, couldn't inspire Hythe managed by Joe's brother Sam - to success.
Hastings United were held nil-nil at East Grinstead Town. United are seventh, the Wasps fifteenth. Whitstable Town climb to ninth, courtesy of a three-nil win over Herne Bay. Marcus Elliott gave them an early lead, and after the break John Walker and Aaron Millbank got numbers two and three. Bay slip to eleventh. Finally, Sittingbourne got their second victory of the weekend, this one coming at Ramsgate. Roman Campbell got his third and fourth goals of the season, the last one coming ten minutes from time to seal victory after Stephen Smith had earlier equalised for the Rams. The Brickies climb to twelfth, whilst the Rams remain devoid of points.

1957 All sides completed their third matches and the leaders in all four divisions maintained their perfect records. Division One Manchester United defeated neighbours City 4-1 at Old Trafford with goals from Johnny Berry, Duncan Edwards, Tommy Taylor and Denis Violet. Arsenal were a point behind in second place after beating Luton Town 2-0. Stoke City topped Division Two winning 2-0 at Leyton Orient; the division saw two of the day’s three hat tricks, Billie Dare scoring West Ham United’s goal in their 3-2 win at Bristol Rovers while Lol Chappell netted his for Barnsley in their 4-1 victory at Derby County. John Hoskins completed the trio netting his goals for southend in their 6-0 defeat of Q.P.R. to go second in Division Three (South) behind Southampton who beat Gillingham 5-1. Brighton dropped their first point when held 2-2 by Exeter City, the Seagulls’ scorers were bert Munday and Peter Small.
We, then Hastings & St. Leonards, playing in Division Two of the Sussex County League, but did not play this day and, in fact, did not start our fixtures until the following Wednesday when we would entertain Hailsham Town.
1985 Peter Barnes, Mark Hughes and Frank Stapleton scored as Manchester United made it five out of five with a 3-1 victory at Nottingham Forest to go top of Division One of the Canon League while second placed Sheffield Wednesday had a modest 1-0 win at Oxford United. David Speedie scored twice as Chelsea beat bottom side w.b.a. Unbeaten Portsmouth continued their perfect start with a 2-0 win at Norwich City chasers Blackburn Rovers having an identical score against Colchester United. Mid-table Brighton won 1-0 at Middlesbrough. Third Division leaders Reading maintained their perfect start with a fourth win a 3-1 victory at Cardiff City, however, the chasing pack also all won which included 4-0 victories for Bury against Lincoln City and Wigan at home to Brentford. Peterborough United took over the leadership of Division Four with a 1-0 win against Scunthorpe going above Rochdale whose winning run ended with a 1-1 draw at Port Vale.
We, then still Hastings Town, entertained Trowbridge Town in the South Division of the Southern League when before a crowd of 299 we won 3-0 with goals from Peter Heritage (2) and Dean White.
2002 Tottenham Hotspur took over leadership of the Barclaycard Premiership with a 2-1 home victory against Southampton having initially gone behind to an own goal which Les Ferdinand equalised, Teddy Sherringham winning the game with a penalty in added time. The inactive Arsenal and Liverpool were leap frogged but Leeds United missed the chance to do so losing 1-2 at Birmingham City. Nicolas Anelka netted twice as Manchester City defeated Everton 3-1. In Nationwide Division One the top two sides strengthened their positions as leaders Portsmouth defeated Brighton 4-2 with six players scoring including Paul Brochin and Danny Cullip for the Seagulls whilst each of Norwich City’s goal was scored by a different player as they beat Watford 4-0. Crystal Palace drew 0-0 at Burnley. Draws were the favoured results in Division Two leaders Brentford being held 2-2 at Notts. County with Plymouth having the same result at Q.P.R. while Cardiff City drew 1-1 at Cheltenham Town. In Division Three Rushden & Diamonds lost the leadership after going down 1-4 at Cambridge United allowing Hartlepool to go top after a 1-0 win at Oxford City.
We entertained Hednesford Town in the Premier Division of the Ryman Isthmian League and won 2-0 with a Stuart Myall penalty and a goal netted by Remy.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS WITH WHYTELEAFE FC Although the original Hastings United played Whyteleafe on a number of occasions our first meeting did not take place until season 1992/93 when we somewhat made up for lost time playing each other three times in the space of ten days as we strove to resolve an F.A. Trophy 1st Qualifying round tie drawing 2-2 at Church Road on Saturday, 19th September and then being held 1-1 after extra time in the replay here three days later. After winning the toss for choice of ground in the second replay, we replayed here again on Monday, 28th September, 1992 we ran 3-0 winners before a crowd of 416, our goals coming from Keith Miles (2) and Dean White. We then played a pre-season match at Whyteleafe on Tuesday, 29th July, 1997 when we won 4-2 with goals from Simon Fox (2), Liam Barham and Mark Browne. Our next and first league meeting took place at Whyteleafe on Tuesday, 14th September, 2004 in Division One of the Ryman League when we again ran out winners, this time 2-0 with goals from Chris Honey and Jon Wallis; however, we lost the return game here 1-2 on Saturday, 5th February, 2005 a crowd of 337 seeing Simon Rowland scoring our only goal. Overall, we played Whyteleafe in three consecutive seasons 2004/05 to 2006/07 in the Ryman League. In season 2014/15 we resumed our meetings and played Whyteleafe three times, United winning 2-1 away in the first qualifying round of the F.A. Cup, Sam Adams and Ade Olorunda the scorers. Both league matches being drawn, 0-0 at Whyteleafe and 2-2 at the Pilot Field in front of 336 spectators, Evan Archibald and Tim Olorunda on target for the U’s.
