We return to Pilot Field action this afternoon after a very solid 1-0 Isthmian League win over a strong, organised and competitive Whyteleafe side and a 2-0 away win, on Tuesday evening, at Chichester City in our first Group 4 Velocity Trophy fixture. Keep the clean sheets coming boys! Today’s visitors currently sit at eighth position in the BetVictor Isthmian Premier League table, with 9 points from 5 matches. Worthing jumped up to that eighth place with victory at Margate last Saturday. Ricky Aguiar and Danny Barker getting late goals to give their supporters a happy trip home. A home crowd of 1,684 saw Worthing defeat local rivals, Bognor Regis Town, 3-0 on August Bank Holiday Monday. However, one match they will want to forget from their August campaign being the 6-0 thrashing they suffered at the hands of Hornchurch. Well known in local circles after making his name at Brighton & Hove Albion under his Uncle, Martin in August 2002 after he signed his first professional contract. Moved on to Aldershot Town in June 2009 before following Manager Gary Waddock to Wycombe Wanderers in January 2010. Unfortunately, his appearances were restricted at both The Shots and The Chairboys by an ongoing knee injury which eventually forced him to retire at the end of that season. Called up twice by England Under-21’s in 2004 and comes from a footballing family with his Grandfather, Father and Brothers, as well as Uncle, Martin being ex-pro’s. Made the move into coaching as Manager of his local club, Selsey, either side of spells as Assistant Manager at Hastings United and Burgess Hill Town, where he took charge of his first game as Worthing boss after being appointed the day before, on Christmas Day 2013. Narrowly missed out on the Division One South Play-Offs in 2014/15 before he was enticed back into the full-time ranks as Manager of Brighton’s Under-18’s. Started the 2017/18 campaign at Hastings United, where he was Manager and also responsible for their Academy, until he answered the call from Woodside Road in September 2017.

New boys Cray Valley PM are sitting pretty at the top of the South East Division after a thumping three-nil win at Herne Bay. Their three goals came in seven minutes. Ali Tumkaya put them ahead two minutes before the break, and Daniel Smith struck again for Mills three minutes after the restart. Emmanuel Oloyede made things comfortable in the fiftieth minute. Ashford United are one point behind and our only club who still have a one hundred percent record. First-half goals from David Smith and Jake McIntyre were enough to see them ease to victory over Burgess Hill Town, who played more than half the match with ten men. Chichester City are another set of new boys who have made a wonderful start to life at Step Four, and despite falling behind to an early Max Morgan goal at home to Faversham Town they turned the game around after the break. Gicu Lordache levelled two minutes after the restart, and then Scott Jones got the winner ten minutes later. Hastings United are fourth after Ben Pope got the only goal of the game against Whyteleafe, whilst Whitehawk are fifth despite ending their match at Hythe Town with nine men. Duane Ofori-Acheampong got the only goal of the game just before the hour, the two red cards came right at the end - one for the scorer, one for the goalkeeper. Sevenoaks Town were the biggest winners of the day, four second-half goals ensuring that they walloped Whitstable. Kyle De Silva got the first from the spot, and that opened the floodgates, Jack Miles, Ainsley Everett and Tyrell Richardson-Brown taking advantage as Oaks climbed to sixth. Three Bridges won their first match of the season at a club who hadn’t lost one before their arrival, Sussex rivals Haywards Heath Town. Former Dorking Wanderers man Tom Tolfrey put them ahead midway through the first-half, and Andrew Sesay wrapped up the points two minutes from time. Heath are eighth, Bridges climb to seventeenth. VCD Athletic sit just behind Heath, but they will be extremely disappointed not to be in the top three, as with ten minutes to go they were two-nil up against Ramsgate and looked certain for three points. Kelvin Ogboe and an own goal had given them that advantage in the first-half, but Kane Rowland and then Stephen Smith - the equaliser in the last minute - sent the Rams home with something to show for their efforts. Another two-two draw and another two-nil lead turned upside down in the last ten minutes came at Sittingbourne, where Roman Campbell and Enoch Ako-Adjei looked to have given the Brickies the points. Karn Miller-Neave and Orlando Smith thought otherwise, however, as East Grinstead Town resurrected themselves and earned a draw. Sittingbourne are tenth, just ahead of Guernsey, who got their first win of the season at Phoenix Sports. Ross Allen put the Green Lions ahead after just ten minutes, and although Jeff Duah-Kessie got an equaliser just after the hour Sebastian Skillen grabbed the winner with eighteen minutes to go. Sports still search for their first point of the campaign. 14

GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart A light hearted – and on many occasions, anything but light hearted, look at life here in what is now known as the BetVictor Isthmian League's South Eastern Division. My rants and raves are not connected with the club in any way.
STATS DON'T ADD UP Weirder and weirder. It's early days yet so far as our league campaign is concerned – end of next month going into November will tell us a bit more about our progress but no doubt about it, it IS weird – fourth in the division a couple of points off the top, unbeaten, not conceded a league goal and, er, the lowest scorers in the league! Make of that what you will! Those stats just don't add up like it says. And look who's top at this early stage. Always a dark horse, always the surprise package, always a promotion party pooper – and Cray Valley PM have taken that first place after last weekend's results. They won 3-0 at Herne Bay who must have started this season with rather more optimism than they finished with back in April when times looked hard. Herne Bay have ex Hythe goal machine Zak Ansah in their ranks now and are one of the better supported sides in the division – 281 turned up last Saturday only for the visitors to leave with the points. Other stats that don't add up are over in central Sussex where relegated Burgess Hill started off with a 7-2 hammering of Hythe – promotion favourites themselves at the wrong end of the early table – only to lose every game since. Chichester have made a fine start to life at step 4 and the other relegated side, Whitehawk, are making a decent early start. And we have too. This stage of the season is a little like the pre season friendlies where you don't draw too much from those results with the big difference, of course, being that points are at stake from the first week in August. And at three points a win, you can always make up arrears if you don't make a decent start, indeed that applies throughout the season. But if you DO make a good start, well, you're not going to turn that down are you! It's getting that consistency in throughout the season and last year we had a couple of poor runs which did us no good with some

And Phil Donaldson did the hard miles to get to East Grinstead - train from Bexhill to Three Bridges then cycled to East Grinstead along the closed railway that hasn't seen a train in over 50 years. Hats off to Phil! bizzare results along the way. Seen it so many times down the years! Beating Whyteleafe was a top result last weekend. I had to follow that one from work through the usual on line channels. Oh not to go back to the days of teletext results. The air was duly punched at around 5pm a week ago at Three Bridges Area Signalling Centre when Footballwebpages showed that Ben Pope's goal had been enough to win the game. And what a well taken goal it was too. Good to know if I can't make a game that Joe Knight's video will ensure I see the highlights. Final stat – after last weekend’s game we were 111th in the semi-pro football attendances chart. Just thought I'd drop that one in.

Hastings 187! That Metropolitan League our reserves played in - there's a Vickers team there, anything to do with VCD Athletic (Vickers Cray Dartford)? Headington are now Oxford United.
VELOCITY TROPHY Well, it's a space filler competition isn't it? Now we are down to a 20 club league – indeed last season the division finished with 19 clubs after Thamesmead went belly up – the league needs to find things for the clubs to do with the spare time that has resulted from the FA's interference with the semi-pro game. We've ended up with the Isthmian version of the Europa League. I didn't go to Chichester on Tuesday evening – a night shift looking after the train service at Selhurst and West Croydon put an end to that – not that I would have gone anyway. Three league points at stake is what does it for me and granted, today's is a big FA Cup fixture with Worthing and whoever wins will be looking forward to next week's 2nd qualifying round draw – but the promotion campaign is what it's all about.
The Velocity Trophy League Cup? That will be summed up by the attendances. Attendance at Chichester – 100 which was probably one of the better gates. And move aside Ben Pope, we have two more goal scorers with Kenny Pogue and Tom Chalmers securing a 2-0 win.
37 GOAL THRILLER AT MILL MEADOW A Group 5 Velocity Trophy game between Chalfont St Peter and Hanwell Town of Isthmian South Central ended 2-2. Weirdly, group games can't finish level – there has to be a result on the night so it went to penalties – all 33 of them. Chalfont St Peter eventually won it 17-16.

FA CUP 1QR Last season's FA Cup games saw three encounters with higher league opposition which is always a real test of promotion credentials. United did well in those games against Kingstonian, Leiston and Hitchin and are up against it again today as our boss's ex compadre, Adam Hinshelwood, calls in with Worthing who are a well established and very well supported Isthmian Premier side following promotion several seasons ago. 700-800 through the gates hopefully today and let's hope for a good performance and result. And hopefully we'll be playing them for league points again in the not too distant future – as in us having gone up!

JERSEY BULLS FC Guernsey will be keeping an interested eye on their Channel Island neighbours the Jersey Bulls who are now playing mainland semi pro football for the first time at step 6 in Combined Counties Division One. Played five, won five, goal difference of 19-0. Not a bad start, eh? And just like Guernsey six or seven years ago, they're pulling em in through the turnstiles with a couple of gates of 927 and 819. And again, like Guernsey, they have to pay the travelling costs of their opponents. Getting gates that clubs two or three levels higher would love to get, that helps big time. But they have to do plenty behind the scenes to raise the money they need to cover all the out goings. It obviously can be done as Guernsey have illustrated since the 2011-2012 season when they started playing main land football. And it's already looking like Jersey Bulls FC have every intention of equalling their neighbours' achievements – as in promotion at the first attempt. Another couple of years could see two Channel Islands outfits at this level assuming Guernsey steady their boat. They have certainly not been in the best condition results wise for a long time and Jersey will be keeping an eye on THEIR neighbours who also started off like a train when they got up to step 6. Remember them beating us three times in 2013-2014? Guernsey won 2-1 at Phoenix Sports last weekend – their first league win since January. Football has it's ups and downs. Jersey Bulls will surely be taking notes..

Big one tomorrow with the Manchester United Legends game. This was the away dressing room at Kettering 17 seasons ago after that famous 5-0 FA Cup replay win with Dave King our keeper looming at the back. And he'll be between the U's sticks tomorrow afternoon.
LEGENDS So far as I'm concerned, the real legends here tomorrow will be the Hastings United men who moved on all those years ago – in particular when the grim end to 2002-2003 unfolded with even grimmer times ahead. That team falling apart was akin to a family break up to many supporters at the time as the euphoria of promotion a year earlier rapidly faded. More on that in a future GF. For now, suffice to say tomorrow is all in a great cause. Quite a weekend of football at The Pilot Field, eh!

THE VISITORS HISTORY Worthing Association FC was founded in February 1886 and played home matches mostly in the People’s (now Homefield) Park until the Club moved to Beach House Park in 1889. The early years were spent playing friendlies and competing in the Sussex Senior Cup, in which our first tie on November 27th 1886 resulted in a 1-0 home win over Brighton Hornets. Worthing reached their 1st Senior Cup final in 1891-92 (losing 5-3 to Brighton Hornets) before winning the 1892-93 final 2-1 against Eastbourne at the County Ground, Hove. This was the first of a record 21 Senior Cup wins, the most recent being in 1999. Worthing were founder members of the West Sussex Senior League in 1896, along with their local rivals Worthing Athletic (founded 1891). The first of 7 championships was won in 1898/99, qualifying Worthing to play the East Sussex League champions Brighton Athletic in the Sussex Charity Cup donated by the Royal Irish Rifles. This match was lost 2-1, but we went on to win the RUR Cup (as it became known) 13 times (including twice jointly with Horsham). In 1899-00 the name “Association” was dropped and we entered the FA Cup and FA Amateur Cup for the first time. In May 1900 Worthing and Worthing Athletic merged and in 1901 the Club moved to its current home, then known as the Sports Ground, now as Woodside Road. The team of 1903-04 contained 3 players who would become full internationals; S.S. Harris and E.G.D. Wright for England and Charlie Webb for Ireland. Worthing withdrew from the West Sussex League for the 1904-05 season, so as not to be in competition with the newly promoted Worthing Rovers (founded 1901). We re-joined the League in 1905 after merging with Rovers during the summer.

In 1907-08 Worthing reached the quarter finals of the FA Amateur Cup, where we drew 1-1 away to the eventual winners Depot Battalion Royal Engineers, before losing the replay 1-0 before a then record crowd of over 3,000. After World War I, in 1919-20, Worthing competed in 2 leagues, being founder members of the Senior Division of the Brighton, Hove & District League and re-joining the West Sussex League. The following year we helped found the Sussex County League and resigned from the West Sussex League in protest at a rule change. The County League championship was won for the first 2 seasons: another 6 titles were won during our stay in this league. At the end of the 1921-22 season we applied to join the Athenian League, but withdrew the application before the AGM. The FA Cup First Round Proper was reached in 1936-37, Worthing losing 4-3 at Yeovil & Petters United. In the 4th Qualifying Round we had beaten Wimbledon in front of our highest reported crowd of 3,600. This year also saw the first of 3 AFA Senior Cup finals reached, Worthing losing 7-1 to Harwich & Parkeston. The other 2 finals, in 1947 and 1949, were both lost to Cambridge Town. In 1948-49 Worthing joined the Corinthian League. Little success was had in this league, finishing bottom 4 times. The best season was 1949-50, when a highest placing of 5th was achieved, along with reaching the Corinthian League Memorial Shield final for the only time (losing 2-1 to Erith & Belvedere). The Corinthian League became Division 1 of the Athenian League in 1963 and Worthing enjoyed immediate success, being promoted as runners-up to Leatherhead as well as reaching the Athenian
MANAGERIAL HISTORY
Captain Geoff Raynsford leads Worthing out at Woodside Road during their FA Cup run of 1982. League Memorial Shield final (losing 2-1 to Chesham United on aggregate) and winning the AFA Invitation Cup (3-1 away to Harwich) for the first of 4 occasions. Three seasons were spent in the Athenian League Premier Division before two successive relegations saw us languishing in Division 2. Worthing started their revival in 1971-72 by returning to Division 1 as runners-up to Staines Town and the following season reached the Athenian League Cup final, losing 2-0 away to Amateur Cup finalists Slough Town after extra-time. Worthing left the Athenian League in 1977 to become members of the newly formed Isthmian League Division Two. Barry Lloyd was appointed manager in 1981 and the Division 2 title was won in 1981-82, with prolific goal scorer Micky Edmonds scoring 53 goals. In 1982-83 we won the Division 1 title and reached the 2nd Round of the FA Cup, losing 4-0 at Oxford United. The next 2 seasons saw Worthing finish as runners-up in the Premier Division to Harrow Borough and Sutton United. At the end of 1984-85 the Club’s main stand burnt down. Albion and the following year Worthing were relegated from the Premier Division. Four years later we had a disastrous season, finishing bottom of Division 1 with only 10 points and having conceded 157 goals. Former Northern Ireland international Gerry Armstrong was appointed manager in 1991-92 and the following season Worthing became the first club to win Division 2 for a second time, having dropped only 12 points from the last 27 matches. Armstrong left in the summer of 1994 to be replaced by his coach John Robson. Premier Division status was regained as runners-up to Boreham Wood in his first season and the FA Cup 1st Round reached again (losing 3-1 at AFC Bournemouth after taking the lead). Worthing finished bottom in their first season back in the Premier and Robson was replaced as manager. Others followed before Brian Donnelly became manager at Christmas 1996. Under Donnelly’s leadership, Worthing staged a remarkable late season recovery, winning their last 5 games to escape relegation on the last day. “Sammy” was to remain manager until November 2001 when Barry Lloyd returned for his second spell in charge. /continued P22

THE VISITORS HISTORY CONTINUED In 1998/99 the club were finalists in the Isthmian League Full Members’ Cup and won the Sussex Senior Cup for the first time in 21 years. 1999/00 saw us reach the FA Cup 1st Round for a 4th time, losing at Rotherham United. In 2001 Worthing celebrated 100 years of playing at Woodside Road, an event marked by the publication of the first book devoted to the Club. Finishing as runners-up in 2003/04 meant promotion back to the Premier Division. Cup runs saw the team reach the Senior Cup final and the last 32 of the FA Trophy, being beaten by eventual winners Hednesford Town. The stay in the Premier Division was short lived as the club was relegated at the end of the 2006/07 season despite reaching the Sussex Senior Cup final for the 28th time. Two consecutive appearances in the Isthmian League Division One South play-offs followed, but each time losing in the semi-finals to the club that was eventually promoted. The management partnership of Alan Pook and Danny Bloor chose to resign in the summer of 2009 and Simon Colbran, then coach at Eastbourne Borough took over the reins. Worthing again managed a play-off spot, but yet again failed at the first hurdle, losing to Godalming Town. Colbran resigned at the end of the season and Chris White took over for 2010/11. After a year of tight budgets White managed a solid mid-table position and lifted the Brighton Charity Cup in his first season. Former Brighton & Hove Albion defender Adam Hinselwood was appointed manager in December 2013. Just over a year later the club’s budget was completely cut and it’s debts revealed to be around £200,000. Despite this Hinselwood steered his young side to a respectable 6th placed finish, just five points shy of the play-off places. However the club’s future was in serious doubt until

March 2015 when George Dowell became majority shareholder in the club, clearing the debts and investing considerably in the refurbishment of the ground at Woodside Road, most notably with the installation of an artificial 3G playing surface prior to the start of the 2015/16 season. By this time Hinselwood had stepped down to take up a full-time coaching role at Brighton & Hove Albion and had been replaced by his assistant, Jon Meeney alongside another former Seagulls defender, Gary Elphick as joint managers. The first match on the new pitch was a pre-season friendly with League Two Northampton Town that the Cobblers won 5-2, Ben Pope became the first Worthing player to score on the new surface. Meeney and Elphick steered the team to promotion to the Isthmian League Premier Division via the play-offs in their first season in charge, beating Faversham Town 3-0 in the final in front of 1,889 fans at Woodside Road. They missed out on a memorable double after narrowly losing the Sussex Senior Challenge Cup final, 1-0 to two-divisions higher Eastbourne Borough at the American Express Community Stadium. Consolidation was achieved the following season despite Meeney stepping down to leave Elphick in sole charge with four games to go, a 1-1 draw with Burgess Hill Town in the penultimate game of the season securing survival, eventually finishing 14th in the table. After a disastrous start to the following campaign Elphick left the club with no points from the opening six league games. Worthing legend John Lock was appointed in temporary charge before former manager Adam Hinshelwood’s return to the club was confirmed in mid-September. Despite improvement under Hinshelwood Worthing supporters had to wait until November 1st for the first league win of the season, a 2-0 success over Needham Market. The team got stronger following this win remarkably ending the season in 14th place, with home form a huge factor in their resurgence, demonstrated by the 2-1 victory over eventual champions Billericay Town in front of a crowd of 1,163 at Woodside Road.

Please note that the officers and stewards of Hastings United Football Club will enforce Ground Regulations. A copy of these Regulations is posted at the entrance to each turnstile and within the ground on the wall next to the food bar.
Our staff should remain courteous even in difficult situations. The Club and its staff know they are offering a service and that they would like every customer to return.
Please note that the following are offences under the Football (Offences) Act 1991, as amended: the throwing of any object within the ground without lawful authority or excuse, the chanting of anything of an indecent or racist nature: the entry onto the playing area or any adjacent area to which spectators are not generally admitted without lawful authority or excuse.

Under the Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol etc.) Act 1985, the following are offences for which a person can be arrested by a police officer: attempting to enter the ground or being inside the ground whilst drunk: being in possession of any intoxicating liquor, or bottle, can or other portable container which could cause damage or personal injury when entering the ground.
We expect our staff to be friendly and helpful and to know their job or be able to call upon someone who is able to respond to the needs of our customers. We expect our staff to give their full attention to a customer in any situation that arises.
In Addition We expect our staff and volunteers to care about their job as this will ensure they care about our customers. We expect our staff and volunteers to treat every customer as they would like to be treated themselves. We in return expect our customers to treat our volunteers and staff with respect and The Club will not tolerate any physical or verbal abused aimed at them.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS WITH WORTHING FC Our first meetings with Worthing took place whilst we were Rock-A-Nore, the initial meeting taking place at Woodside Road on Saturday, 30th November, 1907 when we played them in an F.A. Amateur Cup third qualifying round tie which the home side won 4-2, our goals being scored by T. Baker and A. Hills. That season Worthing won the West Sussex League and Rock-A-Nore took the East Sussex League title and, therefore, the two were invited to play for the Sussex RUR Charity Cup on the Goldstone Ground, Hove a match which took place on Wednesday, 29th April, 1908 and which Worthing won 7-0. The following season’s visit to Woodside Road was a closer affair when we met there for an F.A. Cup first qualifying round tie on Saturday, 3rd October, 1908 when Worthing won 2-1 will goals from Bell and Taylor; Picknell scoring our goal. Our next meeting did not take place until after the Great War and, in fact, was our first league encounter: It was the Rocks’ third match, their second at home on the then upper pitch, in the newly formed County League on Saturday, 18th September, 1920 when we beat Worthing, 3-1 with goals from Alan Wisden (2) and W.H. ‘Bill’ Clout; Worthing winning the return 1-0 on 2nd April, 1921. Our last County League meeting being on Saturday, 9th April, 1927 when we lost 3-4 at home; we then did not meet until we played each other in as the East versus West section winners in the 1939/40 War Emergency League, a game we lost 0-2. Notwithstanding, we have been regularly drawn together in virtually every cup competition we both entered, particularly the Sussex Senior Cup where we have met three times in the Final albeit without success to-date; however, we have won two of our three RUR Final meetings between 1927 and 1940. In both seasons 2004/05 and 2005/06 we played Worthing in pre-season matches and were then drawn together in the Sussex Senior Cup losing 1-5 in a second round tie and then going out 1-3 after extra time in the third round. Thereafter there was over a three year gap until we met again in a pre-season match ahead of the 2009/10 campaign. There was then a further three and half year gap until we found ourselves paired together in the fourth round of the Ryman League Cup where we went through 3-2 going on to then defeat Whitehawk before losing in the semi-final to Concord Rangers. We resumed league meetings in season 2013/14 in Division One South of the Ryman League where we met twice in each of the next three seasons which resulted in us winning half the games and drawing another. Our last competitive meeting took place on Tuesday, 8th December, 2015

ON THIS DAY A look back at some of the matches played in past seasons on: Saturday, 7th September.
1957 Division One leaders Manchester United were the day’s joint top scorers putting five past Leeds United without reply – the other result was in Division 3 (North) where Hull City beat Halifax Town 5-2 thanks to four goals from Doug Clarke. Nottingham Forest had the same number of points as United having defeated Manchester City 2-1 while third placed Luton Town beat Wolves 3-1. The top three in Division Two all drew leaders Charlton Athletic finishing 2-2 at third place Stoke City while second placed Fulham had a similar result at home to Liverpool. Brighton topped Division Three (South) taking over from Southend United who had been beaten 2-3 in their Essex derby with Colchester United, the Seagulls winning 1-0 at Q.P.R. with a second half goal from Peter Harburn.
We, then Hastings & St.Leonards, entertained Cuckfield on the upper pitch in Division Two of the County League and won 4-2 all four of our goals scored by John Crouch.
1985 With a perfect record after seven games Manchester United maintained their seven point lead in Canon League Division One after beating Oxford United 3-0 with goals from Peter Barnes, Bryan Robson and Norman Whiteside. Sheffield Wednesday dropped a place after being held 2-2 by West Ham United allowing Liverpool to go second after they beat Watford 3-1. Division Two leaders Portsmouth widened their advantage with a 1-0 victory against Fulham while second placed Wimbledon were held 0-0 at home by Oldham Athletic. Brighton prevented Blackburn Rovers moving up to second place with a 3-1 home win. Third division toppers Reading went five points clear after a 2-1 win against Walsall while Brentford lost second spot after being held 1-1 by Plymouth Argyle they were replaced by Newport County who beat Bristol Rovers 3-0. The misfortunes of second placed sides was repeated in Division Four where Wrexham dropped a point after drawing 1-1 at Mansfield Town allowing Southend to take over after a 2-0 win at Exeter City while leaders Rochdale beat Peterborough United 2-1.
We, then still Hastings Town, entertained Epsom & Ewell here in the first qualifying round of the F.A. Cup where we won 2-1, our goals scored by John Daubney and Peter Heritage before a crowd of 384.
2002 There were no Premiership fixtures as England played this day entertaining Portugal at Villa Park in a friendly. Sven-Goran Eriksson gave a first start to Leeds United’s Alan Smith who rewarded him with a debut goal after forty minutes heading in a Les Bowyer cross. Portugal enjoyed the better of the second half and there was a headed equaliser from substitute Rodriguez Costinha ten minutes from time. In Nationwide Division One Portsmouth kept their unbeaten record, the only one remaining after second place Norwich City lost 2-3 to Sheffield United, while Pompey were winning 3-1 at Gillingham allowing Leicester City to replace them after they won 3-2 at Wimbledon. Brighton lost 0-1 to a Darren Ward goal at Millwall. In Division Two Wigan Athletic took over the leadership after a 3-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers as Brentford dropped two points being held 0-0 by Luton Town. It was a similar picture in Division Three Rushden & Diamonds going top after a 3-0 win over Southend replacing Hartlepool United who were held 2-2 at Swansea City.
We, then still Hastings Town, entertained Ilkeston Town in the Premier Division of the Southern League and won 3-0 before a crowd of 433, our goals scored by Hegley, Myall and Zahana-Oni.

WORTHING FC PLAYER PROFILES ROCO REES (Goalkeeper) Brighton & Hove Albion U18s goalie who joins on work experience. Kept a clean sheet on his debut, at Whyteleafe; to add to the four in seventeen appearances for the Seagulls youth, since he first played for them at Reading in February 2017. Captain against Chelsea and featured three times in their 5th round FA Youth Cup run. On the bench at the EFL Trophy tie against Peterborough Utd.
JOE TENNENT (Centre-Half) Previously played for Soham Town Rangers, on loan from Colchester Utd and joins us a double ‘Player of the Year’ winner at Three Bridges in 18/19. Equally adept at scoring goals as well as keeping them out, five last term, including two at East Grinstead and the winner at Sittingbourne. His maiden Red’s match also coming at The Bunn Leisure Stadium in July.
JOEL COLBRAN (Right-Back) Second spell at the club after playing for our U18s, then becoming a first team regular at Loxwood. Called up for Sussex U18s during his time at Plaistow Road and made two appearances for us in the League Cup at home to Burgess Hill and Billericay in 16/17. Came back for the first win of 17/18 against Lancing in the Sussex Senior Cup, followed by an equally composed display in the FA Trophy win over Lowestoft Town. Scored his first senior goal for the club - and the only goal of the game - against Needham Market in April 2018. Picked up the Manager’s Player of the Year Award at the conclusion of that campaign.
REECE MYLES-MEEKUMS (Winger) A season-long loan, last term, from our top-flight neighbours Brighton, where he played his first youth team game at 16. Moved up to the U23s in 17/18 and turned out for us off the bench against Staines Town, followed by his first start at Shoreham in the Velocity Trophy. Bagged his maiden goal at Harlow Town. Impressive form saw him sign for National League Bromley, after his release by Brighton. Whipped the home crowd into a frenzy, upon his temporary return with the 88th minute winner against Folkestone Invicta in November. Had further loan periods with Eastbourne Boro and Bognor in 18/19.
JALEN JONES (Centre-Half) Left-sided defender, who first appeared for us at Whitehawk in January scoring a goal. Notched on his home debut too, against Lewes. Snapped up by Merstham upon his release by Crystal Palace in the Summer of 2017. Turned out against his future employers in April 2018 and was dual-signed with Eastbourne Utd last term.
RICKY AGUIAR (Midfielder) An U18 with both Shoreham and Lewes, where he won Sussex and Isthmian Youth Cup honours. Helped the young Rooks to the FA Youth Cup third round in 17/18. Called up for both Sussex and Sussex Schools U18s, scoring in a man of the match performance for Worthing College as he picked up more silverware, the Men’s First Xl County Cup a year later. Impressive form earned him a place in the English Colleges squad. Impressed in the previous pre-season with debut goals against South Park and also Selsey, with his first competitive one coming at Harlow Town. Ended his first full campaign in adult football as Manager’s and Player’s Player of the Year.
DANNY BARKER (Centre-Half/Midfielder) Began his career at top flight Brighton where he captained their U18s and was promoted to their U23s at the start of 17/18. Unfortunately, after playing his first game against Newcastle Utd, injury cut short his time with the Seagulls and he joined us in the February, making his debut at Leiston. His full debut came a fortnight later at home to Harlow Town. Bagged the equaliser at Margate on Easter Saturday, 2018, to rescue a point. Twinned with Billy. MARVIN ARMSTRONG (Midfielder) Latest talent to emerge from ‘The Croydon Collective’ who only signed for Whyteleafe at the beginning of last term. Trialled with us this Summer and immediately impressed on debut at Selsey. However, it was his stunning solo effort at Three Bridges that really made people sit up and take note and sealed a move to Woodside. Enjoyed a speedy return to Church Road in our final pre-season friendly.

ALEX PARSONS (Midfielder) Originally dual-signed on transfer deadline day 2014 from National South Whitehawk and played at Three Bridges the following night. Started as a professional at Bournemouth, debuting in League One in 2012 and went on loan to both Wimborne Town and Bashley followed by a spell in The Nike Academy. Loaned out by Whitehawk to Hampton & Richmond Boro at the start of 13/14 he finished that campaign with three goals in six games for us. A permanent move to and promotion with Bognor Regis Town came next then a goalscoring second debut against Kingstonian, ironically at Nyewood Lane, saw a return to red.

WORTHING FC PLAYER PROFILES OLLIE PEARCE (Forward) After several years at local rivals, Bognor Regis Town, Ollie made the move in last year’s close season. A home-grown Rock who made his first team debut at 17 before going on to enjoy a goal-laden career at Nyewood Lane. Around 80 goals in a little over 250 appearances saw him feature in both promotion and relegation campaigns. Played his part in getting Bognor to the FA Trophy semi-finals in 2016. His only other club has been Midhurst & Easebourne while he also represented England Colleges. Made his long-awaited debut at Haringey Boro in September 2019 and added his first goal at Lewes. JESSE STARKEY (Midfielder) Began a loan spell at Harlow Town in December 2017. Made the move permanent after the expiration of his contract with Gillingham in January 2018. Started out at Portsmouth before a move to Chelsea in 2006, where he earned a scholarship in 2012. Despite being a regular in their U18s, he wasn’t offered professional terms and subsequently joined hometown club, Brighton & Hove Albion in 2013. After nearly four years with the Seagulls he went to Swindon Town and started the final game of 16/17, at Charlton Ath. Signed for Gillingham in September 2017, coming off the bench against Scunthorpe Utd a week later and scoring in the Kent Senior Cup against Phoenix Sports in October. Scored for the first time in a red shirt at home to Folkestone invicta in February 2018. ROSS EDWARDS (Centre-Half/Midfielder) Joined the youth team and finally got a taste of first team action in late 2015 against Chipstead. This was followed by a couple more cameos off the bench before a full and assured first start at Whyteleafe on April 2nd 2016. Versatile defender or midfielder with Sussex U18s, Sussex Schools, England Schools and England Colleges Representative honours who headed the Boxing Day 2017 derby winning goal at Burgess Hill Town. Handed the Captain’s armband for the first time at Lowestoft Town at the start of that season. Returned to fitness last year at Southern Combination’s Chichester City. LLOYD DAWES (Forward) Signed in 2013 from then Conference South Whitehawk. An exciting and energetic player with an impressive armoury of skills, who made his debut at Horsham scoring a goal. Opened his Woodside Road account in the very next game against Burgess Hill Town. Re-joined us after a

brief spell at Peacehaven & Telscombe and struck on his second debut at Redhill. Made his Sussex bow against The Royal Navy. Took another sojourn at Lewes at the start of 16/17, before the homecoming of 15/16’s top scorer (29) versus Wingate & Finchley in September. Bagged twice at Three Bridges and ended the campaign with 27 more goals. Notched eight times in pre-season, after spending the last two terms at Eastbourne Boro. MASON DOUGHTY (Forward) Signed on the dotted line after a prolific season last time out, that included nine goals in ten games for Three Bridges U23s. He bagged for the first team at Ashford Utd and did the same on his debut for Redhill, while having the unique achievement of scoring twice for Broadbridge Heath in their final game at their Leisure Centre Ground. Completed the scoring at home to Eastbourne Utd and poached a double at Whyteleafe. BEN MENDOZA-SHERMAN (Midfielder) Born in Chichester and won the Isthmian U18s League with Bognor Regis, before embarking on a football scholarship in Ohio. One of only five players to be placed on The River States Conference Men’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete team in 2018. Ben can play on either wing and scored some spectacular goals for the University of Rio Grande. JASPER PATTENDEN (Midfielder) Teenage prodigy who shot to prominence last term after making his debut in the FA Trophy replay at Burgess Hill Town. Started against Lewes in mid-January and scored as a substitute in the emphatic victory over Harlow Town. Eligible for the U18s and regularly finds the back of the net for the newly-formed academy. Previously known to Hinsh when he played for the then Brighton & Hove Albion U14s Manager and was with the Seagulls from U8s up to U16s. Turned out a number of times for Sussex’s senior youth team. SHOLA AYOOLA (Forward) Hails from Nigeria. First played at Cherry Orchard FC in Dublin, where he was signed at 16 by Stoke City. Worked his way up from their U16s to U23s; scoring three goals in ten U23 appearances. Earned three caps with the Republic of Ireland U18s, notching once, in April 2017. Let go by Stoke upon their Premier League relegation last June. Spent time in America. Demonstrated a striker’s instinct when he scored on his debut at Three Bridges.
