MATCH REPORTER REQUIRED The Club are looking for a volunteer to write first team match reports for submission to media outlets. The job could suit somebody who is looking to get into journalism career wise or in general may have an interest in sports report writing. The Club would require the person to be available to report on home and away matches with reports being submitted to such as the Hastings Observer, Non-League Paper and other appropriate media outlets on an as soon as possible basis after matches. WELCOME Good evening all. Welcome to the Pilot Field for tonight’s BetVictor Isthmian League Division One South East match against Brighton based, Whitehawk FC. We extend a warm welcome to the officials, players and supporters of our visitors. We hope they have an enjoyable evening, and wish them a safe return trip along the Sussex coast, but hopefully on this, our first league meeting since season 2012/13, is an unrewarding encounter for the Hawks. A similar warm welcome is extended to the three match officials, Referee Kane Dempster and his two Assistants, Aaron Harris and Jake Woodman. We return to Pilot Field action this evening following our exit from the FA Cup at the ‘hands’ of Worthing! Watch the match highlights video on YouTube for the significance of the ‘hand’. However we bounced straight back with a 2-1 away win at Three Bridges on Saturday. Tonight’s visitors currently sit in the top play-off spot, at 2nd position in the league table, with the same 11 points yield from 5 matches as the U’s but with a 2-goal goal difference advantage. Still very early days, but I imagine the Hawks will be up around the play-off contenders as we enter the business end of the season.

Hawks ran riot at their TerraPura ground on Saturday with a dominant 5-1 thrashing of Herne Bay in front of 201 spectators. ‘Man of the Match’ and former National South level striker, Duane Ofori-Acheampong, netting a hat-trick with Connor Tighe and Rob Deda notching up one each.

MANAGER’S NOTES Good evening everyone. A warm welcome to the Whitehawk board members, staff and players to the Pilot Field today ..... from all at HUFC we wish you a safe journey. Unbeaten and ticking along nicely is how I’d best describe our start to the season ..... we are showing glimpses of the form that blitzed most opponents last season in an attacking sense whilst showing far more resolve and stubbornness in the defensive department - one goal conceded in the league ..... non of which from open play has a very nice ring to it - no goals conceded from open play in 9 hours of football has a better ring to it!

Whitehawk represent what I believe a ‘top of the table type challenge’ ..... very similar to the Whyteleafe match in fact ..... it’ll be tough no doubt. However, we’ve become used to these type of contests during my time as Manager, so like against Whyteleafe we will be aiming to win and win well ...... especially when you factor into the mix that over the past two seasons we have won over 95% of home games. Lastly and as always I want to say a thank you to the supporters for their backing and love already this season ...... making Three Bridges away an atmospheric occasion is one hell of an achievement and you certainly did that! LEAGUE NEWS From: Ian Townsend
Bognor man returns to the Cathedral City Bognor Regis Town, who signed Canadian midfielder Emmett Dunn on a dual-registration deal from neighbours Chichester City back in March, have agreed that the player can return solely to Chichester - in time for their FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round match with Chalfont St Peter. City have never made it past this stage of the competition, and they will be hoping that this will be their year! Dunn has been on the bench five times for the Rocks this season, but has only made it onto the pitch twice, in defeat at Worthing and the victory at Wingate & Finchley.
Sittingbourne borrow Margate man Margate have confirmed that midfielder Harrison Pont has joined Sittingbourne on loan in the pursuit of more playing time. Pont, who started in the draws with Brightlingsea Regent and Hornchurch, has more recently been on the bench or hasn't made the squad. His last appearance came against Lewes two weeks ago, when he came on with half-an-hour remaining and helped his side to secure victory. He formerly played for Hollands & Blair and was a graduate of the Dover Athletic Academy. Whether he will be allowed to play for the Brickies at Bognor in the FA Cup is as yet unknown. 14
Cannons sign Maidstone United defender Hythe Town manager Steve Watt has quickly taken advantage of his Maidstone United connections by bringing in defender Danny Divine on loan. Watt, who was Assistant Manager at United last season took over at Reachfields at the weekend, faced his first League match in charge as the Cannons travelled to Phoenix Sports on Saturday, losing 2-0. Divine came through the Youth system at Gillingham, winning the clubs Under-16 ‘Player of the Year’ Award, before signing his first professional contract last year. He was released by the Priestfield club in April, and signed for United in July.
Whitstable had two debutants on Saturday Whitstable Town gave debuts to two new signings in Saturday's home draw with Haywards Heath Town, attacking midfielder John Ufuah and winger Marshall Wratten, who were named as numbers ten and eleven on the team sheet. Wratten, nineteen, is in the first year of a professional deal with Dover Athletic after coming through the Club's Academy. He might be familiar to Isthmian League watchers, as he made a number of appearances for Margate last season, mainly from the substitutes bench. Ufuah joins from Leatherhead, having made six appearances this season - the last in the four-one home defeat to Lewes on 31st August. He joined the Tanners towards the end of last season, making a number of appearances from the bench as they narrowly failed to grab a play-off place. Prior to his move to Fetcham Grove he made a number of South East Division appearances at Three Bridges, although not against his new club.

GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart A light hearted – and on many occasions, anything but light hearted, look at life here in what is now known as the BetVictor Isthmian League's South Eastern Division. My rants and raves are not connected with the club in any way.
TWO HASTINGS FETISHES IN A DAY Well that was a decent weekend. Well, most of it. A day out on 1001, our preserved diesel electric train that ventures out from it's Bulverhythe Road depot on tour several times a year was off to Salisbury – and United were at Three Bridges. Best of both worlds was me bailing out of 1001 at Reading, killing several birds with one stone – try out a new Hitachi train into Paddington (sad but true), Heathrow Express to go check out Terminal 3 from which I fly to the Philippines next month (hadn't been to Heathrow for 55 years!) and then see what the Piccadilly Line was like back into central London (pretty sad I suppose) and then onto Three Bridges for football. Of which I missed the 1st half because the Underground went belly up with prolonged failures - on the Piccadilly Line. So I saw Three Bridges equalise which wasn't too good but things picked up when Ben Pope got on the end of an Olly howitzer throw to win the game. Leaving me to toddle off to Guildford to rejoin 1001 for a ride back to Hastings. Job done – eventually!

END OF DISTRACTIONS Couldn't make the FA Cup replay at Woodside Road. Work interfered again. Yes, it's frustrating to know that we let Worthing off the hook twice and two up with just over 20 minutes to go in the replay should have been done and dusted with a visit to National South St Albans to come next. But it is what it is and we move on and can concentrate on the big prize, the real prize, that takes a full season to achieve. £4390 in the bank is not to be sneezed at in the world of semi pro step 4 either. Our boys showed twice they can mix it with higher level opposition – we have a decent team here. Let's just hope they can see everything slot into place as a successful promotion campaign requires. Nothing will convince me otherwise – the FA Cup is a distraction, even if it's a lucrative one. I took some stick at work the day after the replay. My colleague, Andy – he of “We, our's and us” fame in an earlier Gut Feeling saw Horsham win their replay against Met Police with a last minute goal and Danny who's claim to fame as a Worthing “supporter” is that he lives there and went to Woodside Road (once – years ago) to see them play Kingstonian, it cost about £4 and the game was rubbish. But for having a pop at me purposes, he became a born again, passionate follower of Worthing ........ Yea right!

HASTINGS OBSERVER
2500 attendance here for the Legends game a week ago Sunday. And a thoroughly decent amount must have been raised for the Prostate Cancer appeal. Excellent. And seeing some well known faces from years past was certainly a bit special. Keith Gillespie and Frank Stapleton brought back many memories. Gillespie looked in great nick.
Newspapers are a dying breed as we know them. I very occasionally get the Hastings Observer and at weekends get the Non-League and Rugby papers. There's always a Metro or Evening Standard to be found on the train to and from work and they're both free. The Internet is gradually seeing the end of the traditional newspaper which is a shame. When local football was covered by the two Simons – as in Messrs Carey and then Newstead, it was done so very well, Especially Simon Newstead who is now prominent by his absence and has been replaced by the intriguing sounding Matt Blogg. We were spoilt when Simon Newstead looked after the football – bang up to date coverage, reports and interviews – and he was HERE too! The two Simons between them did a fine job covering local sport over a long period.

Mid late 90s Good to see you up to the end of fella. 2002-2003 for me. Talk about ups and downs. And again, for me, the break up of the United team at the end of a desperately disappointing 02-03 as relegation saw us back in the Southern League's Eastern Division that we had climbed out of a year earlier. To this day I fail to understand why, having continually added to the 01-02 squad to further the promotion campaign, we failed to reinforce the 02-03 side which didn't need more than a couple of experienced blokes to help us retain that Premier Division spot we'd taken three years to get back after relegation by rule book in 1999. And that Legends game 10 days ago saw several familiar faces out there in United colours, Hastings United colours ...... Danny Simmonds, Stuart Playford, Adam Flanagan, Stuart Myall, Tommy Osbourne and Dave King – all part of that squad that fell apart in the summer of 2003. Plus Tony Burt who skippered the promotion side of the previous season plus Terry White, Paul Ruddy, Liam Barham, Paul Tuppeney and Stafford Brown. And Paul Smith who's move to Nottingham Forest in the mid 90s saw Hastings Town bank £50,000 plus the takings from a 4888 attendance for a pre-season friendly against Forest a few months later. Keith Gillespie looked in great nick for the Man U Legends, Simmo looked the part for our boys. I managed to have a chat with him after the game, he's 45 now and looks like he could still do a job. Great to catch up and managed to get a few words in with Mylie and King Dave too. Yes, I'll always regret the breakup of the 02-03 squad that with a couple of reinforcements early on would've held it's own and would have been serious contenders for a Conference South place when that division was formed in 20042005. All the more so given that Messrs Playford, Simmonds and Yates ended up at local rivals Eastbourne Borough who overtook us in 02-03 and have remained ahead of us ever since.

WHITEHAWK FC PLAYER PROFILES James Broadbent (Goalkeeper) 26-year-old James was signed from Shoreham on transfer deadline day in 2019 and appeared in the final three games of last season. James began his career as youth team captain and then turned professional at Rushden & Diamonds when they were playing in the National Conference. Since then he has played for Peacehaven & Telscombe, Eastbourne United and Eastbourne Town.
in the Western League Premier Division. After just one game for City he was scouted by the Albion and signed in November 2018. The central defender went on to make 11 appearances in the Premier League South for Albion U18s, as well appearing in the FA Youth Cup, in victories over West Ham and Man Utd. He scored the Hawks first goal of the season on his debut against VCD Athletic.

The 25-year-old Londoner joined the Hawks in August 2019. A former Fulham youth player, Charles was an unused sub for the Cottagers in a Premier League match against Stoke City in 2012, before signing for Crawley Town, where he scored in a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie against Cambridge United in 2014. Charles is a left-wing back who has also played for Maidstone United, Kingstonian, Harrow Borough and Welling United.
The Brighton born 23-year-old full-back joined the Hawks from Newhaven in August 2019. As a youth player, Ian was a striker at Brighton & Hove Albion before joining Newhaven, where he scored on his first team debut as a 17-year-old. He elder brother Jake, a Hawks legend, is currently at Billericay Town.
Max Blencowe (Defender) Max is the captain of the current Hawks youth side. The Brighton born 17-year-old featured in central defence during pre-season but has yet to make his first team debut. Max spent six years at Brighton & Hove Albion before being released aged 14. He captained the Sussex Schools U16 team to the national championship last season.
Matias Torres (Defender) The 21-year-old Argentinian centre half joined the Hawks in August 2019 after impressing on trial in pre-season. A former youth player at Quilmes, Alvarado and CA Independiente in his home country, Matias is the cousin of Hawks former skipper Sergio Torres and like him comes from Mar del Plata, where both of them grew up. He arrived in England in July, looking to follow in the footsteps of Sergio, in forging a career in this country.
Fintan Walsh (Defender) Marvin Hamilton (Defender) 30-year-old Marvin is in his third spell with the Hawks, having signed from Eastbourne Borough for the start of this season. He scored his only goal for the Hawks against Borough in 2016 and played in our play-off final for the National League against Boreham Wood. The Londoner started his career at Gillingham before appearing in non-league for Dover Athletic, Hemel Hempstead Town, VCD Athletic and Margate. He has also had three spells at Eastbourne Borough, as well as playing in Cyprus and Australia. He was called up to the Sri Lankan national team in May 2019.
Kacper Lopata (Defender) The Polish U19 international joined the Hawks on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion in August 2019. The 18-year-old moved to England in 2011. He was released as a youth player by Yeovil Town, before joining Bristol City after a brief spell at Clevedon Town
Fintan was the first player born this century to play for our first team, at the age of 17, and has now made over 50 appearances. A former skipper of the Hawks U18 double winners and the English Colleges FA team, Fintan has also appeared for Bognor Regis Town and Burgess Hill Town on loan. His first senior goal was the winner at AFC Hornchurch in April. Fintan re-signed for the Hawks in August 2019 after a move to Merstham fell through.
Rob Deda (Midfield) Brighton born 18-year-old Rob made his first team debut in 2017 in the Sussex Senior Cup against Eastbourne Town. He sustained a serious injury that kept him out of football for the first half of last season but made his comeback from the bench against Worthing in January 2019. Rob was a member of the England FA Schools squad in 2018.

WHITEHAWK FC HISTORY Whitehawk are Brighton’s premier non-league club. Founded in 1945, the Hawks have had two periods of unprecedented success as they have risen up the football pyramid from a team playing parks football to be within one game of an FA Cup third round tie at Everton in 2015. Between 1948 and 1952 the Hawks were promoted four times to reach senior county level where they remained until 2010, when three further promotions in four seasons took them to just two leagues below the Football League. The club was founded in 1945 as Whitehawk & Manor Farm Old Boys FC and entered the Brighton Junior Cup league. The club's first match was a 5–3 away win on 13 October 1945 against Hove County Old Boys at Hove Recreation Ground. Whitehawk & MFOB then joined the Brighton, Hove & District Football League, winning four titles and their first major senior trophy, the Sussex Senior Cup by beating Eastbourne Town 1–0 at Woodside Road, Worthing in 1951. The Sussex Senior Cup win completed an unprecedented series of cup wins at junior, intermediate and senior levels in successive seasons, which still stands as a record in nonleague football. Just how far the club had come in such a short time was illustrated by the fact that the reserves won the Sussex Junior Cup in 1952, beating Selsey 3-1, so securing a trophy at the same level that the first team had been playing at, just four years earlier. Sussex County League 1952-2010 The club was admitted to the Sussex County League Division 1 in 1952–53 and finished third in their first season. The Hawks' first county league game was a 4-1 win at Crawley on 31 August 1952. The Hawks were Division 1 runners-up for three successive seasons from 1954–55 onwards, as well as Sussex Senior Cup finalists in 1954, losing 1-0 to Horsham at the Goldstone Ground in front of a crowd of 5626. For the 1954–55 season,

Brighton Corporation allowed the club to move onto a permanently enclosed pitch at the north end of East Brighton Park, on what is now the home pitch, known as the Enclosed Ground. The first match played there was a Sussex County League Division 1 game against Southwick on 1 September 1954, which the Hawks won 6–2. The Hawks won the Sussex RUR Cup for the first time in 1955, beating Eastbourne United 1-0 after extra time at the Goldstone. The club were never out of the top five in the County League Division 1 for the rest of the decade and changed their name to Whitehawk FC for the start of the 1960–61 season. In 1961–62 under manager Billy Thew, Whitehawk won the first of four County League One titles as well as the Sussex Senior Cup, beating Eastbourne United 4–0 at the Goldstone. Billy Ford scored 16 goals in Sussex Senior Cup football that season out of a personal haul of 93 for the season. The publicity generated by a civic reception at the Royal Pavilion led to Brighton Corporation providing a grant of £3,500 for the club to erect a self-build grandstand with standing for 500 spectators. In 1963–64 the Hawks retained the championship by winning their last six matches of the season. After losing the nucleus of the squad to Lewes the team then struggled and under manager Ron Pavey, who later became the Chief Executive of Brighton & Hove Albion, found itself relegated for the first time ever in 1967. They made an immediate return as Division Two champions in 1968. The next nine years saw The Hawks continue to compete in the top division, during which time they lost 2-1 to Horsham at the Goldstone in the Sussex Senior Cup final in 1972. The Hawks were relegated for a second time in 1977. This time they were to spend four seasons in Division Two, having to apply for re-election in 1979 after finishing second from bottom, their lowest ever senior league placing.
The club gained its first club house at the end of the seventies, using what was originally a prefabricated building that had been a temporary bank in Haywards Heath. A perimeter fence was added to the ground in 1981 and under new manager Sammy Donnelly, the Hawks won promotion from Division 2 as champions. In 1983–84 Whitehawk won County League One for the third time, winning their last 18 games of the season. 1986–87 saw the Hawks finish as runners-up to Arundel. In 1988–89, again under Sammy Donnelly, Whitehawk had what was at the time their best run in the FA Cup, going out 2-0 in a fourth qualifying round replay to Bognor Regis Town. The home attendance record of 2,100 at the Enclosed Ground stood for 27 years. Floodlights were erected in 1988 and were first used in a match organised to mark the occasion against then First Division Luton Town on 21 March 1988. The game finished 2-2. The Hawks won the Sussex RUR Cup for the third time in 1990–91, beating Peacehaven & Telscombe in the final 2–1, with youth player Darren Freeman, our future most successful ever manager, heading the winner. 1993–94 was another good season for the club, finishing once again as runners-up, this time to Wick. 2002–03 saw the club under manager and former youth player Ian Chapman once again finish in second place, this time to runaway winners Burgess Hill Town. The club finally achieved the league title success that had previously eluded them, winning County League 1 in 2009–10 under Darren Freeman, to gain promotion to the Isthmian League Division One South for the first time. The Hawks also reached the semi-final of the FA Vase, losing 4-1 on aggregate to Wroxham of the Eastern Counties League Premier Division. Isthmian League 2010-2014 In their first season at the new level Whitehawk were in the title race but eventually had to settle for third place and an end-of-season play-off defeat on penalties to Leatherhead. The Hawks finished as Isthmian League Division One South champions the following season, as well as lifting the Sussex Senior Cup after beating Crawley Down 2–1 at the Amex. The club achieved back to back promotions in the 2012–13 season by winning the Isthmian
League Premier Division at the first attempt to earn a place in the Conference South. National League South 2014-2018 The Hawks struggled in their first season in Conference South. After achieving three promotions in four years, Darren Freeman was sacked in January 2014 and replaced by Steve King. The club then enjoyed their most successful season ever in 2014–15, finishing fourth in Conference South and earning a place in the play-off final against Boreham Wood, which was lost 2-1 after extra time. Whitehawk completed the season with a 5–0 victory over Lewes at the Amex to lift the Sussex Senior Cup. In 2015–16 the Hawks reached the first-round of the FA Cup for the first time winning 5–3 against National League Lincoln City. Lincoln’s next FA Cup defeat the following season came in the sixth round at the Emirates Stadium against Arsenal. In the second round the Hawks drew 1–1 at League Two Dagenham & Redbridge, following a dramatic headed goal in added time by Jordan Rose, which was broadcast live by the BBC during the afternoon sports programme. In front of a record crowd of 2,174 at the Enclosed Ground, the Hawks lost the second-round replay 3-2 after taking the lead through Danny Mills. To force the match into extra time, Whitehawk again equalised dramatically in added time. The whole match was broadcast live by BT Sport. In February 2016, the club parted company with King after picking up just 9 points from the previous 36 available. Under Argentine Pablo Asensio, the Hawks finished the season in style, but lost in the promotion play-offs to Ebbsfleet United. The next two seasons saw frequent managerial changes and over 100 different players used, culminating in the inevitable relegation for only the third time in the club’s history in 2017-18. Not even the return of Steve King could arrest the club’s fortunes and when he departed at the end of last season, he was replaced by the Hawks successful U18 manager Jude Macdonald, with the club looking to build a more stable team with a mix of youth and experience. Unfortunately, the club spent only one season in the Isthmian League Premier Division, suffering relegation on the final day of the 2018-19 season, despite a 4-0 win over Corinthian-Casuals.

A Brighton born Hawks youth team product, 20-yearold Luke was skipper of the treble winning U18 team. He signed senior terms in July 2017 but missed most of the season with injury. Luke made his full senior debut against Potters Bar Town last season and scored his first goal against Wingate & Finchley. He is currently studying at Loughborough University.
Duane originally joined the Hawks on loan from Woking in February 2019 before signing permanently. The 26-year-old Londoner was a Southend United youth product, who has also played for Braintree Town, Harrow Borough, Torquay United, Dover Athletic and Dartford. He scored his first goal for the Hawks in the win at Lewes last season.

JP re-signed for the Hawks in January 2019 from Welling United and was appointed assistant manager in May. The 29-year-old is a former England schoolboy international and spent 12 years of his early career at Everton before being released in 2009. He made 42 appearances for the Hawks in the 2014-15 season, when we reached the play-off final for the National League. He has also played for Hamilton Academical, Luton Town, Macclesfield Town, Ebbsfleet United and Southport.
The 21-year-old Brazilian is the Hawks’ longest serving player, making his debut in 2016. Lucas moved to England as five-year old and is a product of the Hawks successful youth set-up. He scored twice on the opening day of last season against Harlow Town and finished as our leading scorer. He is currently studying at Brighton University.
Henry Muggeridge (Midfield) Our 26-year-old captain joined the Hawks in June 2018 from Crowborough Athletic, where his Father is first-team manager. Henry was a youth player at Fulham and then had a year as a pro at Bristol City before playing for Charlton Athletic, Tonbridge Angels and Lewes. He immediately made his mark with nine assists in his first ten games, as well as scoring a hattrick in the final game of last season against Corinthian-Casuals.
Alfie Rogers (Attacker) 19-year-old Alfie played in both treble and double winning Hawks youth teams under Jude Macdonald after starting at Lewes. In 2015-16 he made 41 appearances for Haywards Heath Town. Alfie joined Horsham in January 2017 and scored a hat-trick at Chatham Town in March, becoming the youngest player, at 17, ever to do so in the Isthmian League. He spent last season on a soccer scholarship in the US. Alfie made his Hawks debut from the bench in the opening game of this season and took over in goal at the end of the game in the recent win at Hythe Town.
Connor Tighe (Attacker) Lew Unwin (Midfield) 20-year-old Lew signed for the Hawks from Crowborough Athletic in October 2018. As a youth player he represented Kent FA and Kent Schools. He made his first team debut in the Sussex County Cup against Eastbourne Town in October and his full league debut at Margate in December.
Dave Martin (Attacker) 34-year-old Dave is now in his second spell with the Hawks, having made 42 appearances in 2015-16. His six goals included one in the FA Cup victory over Lincoln City. The Erith born left-winger began as a youth player at Brighton & Hove Albion before playing in the football league for Crystal Palace, Millwall, Derby County and Southend United. Dave has also played for Luton Town, Stevenage, Bromley, Margate and most recently Eastbourne Borough.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion U23 and Welsh U19 international was born in Brighton and re-signed for the Hawks in October 2018 after leaving Burgess Hill Town. The 22-year-old was leading scorer for the Hillians in 2017-18, while on loan from the Hawks. He first joined us on loan from the Albion in 2017 before signing permanently. He scored twice within five minutes of appearing as a second half sub at Harlow Town in February last season.
James Waters (Attacker) Brighton born James is a Hawks youth team product and a member of the double winning side of 2018. The 18-year-old made his first team debut from the bench in the Velocity League Cup tie against Three Bridges last season and his league debut at Tonbridge Angels in November. James had brief spells at Saltdean United and Lewes but re-signed for the Hawks in July 2019.

The Club Believes Customer Care starts on the inside, with a good team of staff and work ethic. Most of our staff are volunteers but The Club expect our staff to always do their best.
Please note that the officers and stewards of Hastings United Football Club will enforce Ground Regulations. A copy of these Regulations is posted at the entrance to each turnstile and within the ground on the wall next to the food bar.
Our staff should remain courteous even in difficult situations. The Club and its staff know they are offering a service and that they would like every customer to return.
Please note that the following are offences under the Football (Offences) Act 1991, as amended: the throwing of any object within the ground without lawful authority or excuse, the chanting of anything of an indecent or racist nature: the entry onto the playing area or any adjacent area to which spectators are not generally admitted without lawful authority or excuse.

Under the Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol etc.) Act 1985, the following are offences for which a person can be arrested by a police officer: attempting to enter the ground or being inside the ground whilst drunk: being in possession of any intoxicating liquor, or bottle, can or other portable container which could cause damage or personal injury when entering the ground.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS WITH WHITEHAWK FC Our first meeting did not take place until 13th November, 1965 when as Hastings & St. Leonards we met in the second round of the Sussex Senior Cup when we lost 1-2 on the upper pitch; our goal being scored by Ken Beardsell. Two years later we met for the first time in league action the Hawks completing the double over us (3-2 home and 3-0 away) as they eased themselves to the County League Division Two title to secure an immediate return following relegation. Then we did not meet again for nearly seven years, when as Hastings Town, we recorded our first victory recording a 2-1 home win, after extra time, in the second round of the County League Cup. We then played each other home and away in Division Two of the County League for three consecutive seasons: We lost (0-1) the opening league match of season 1977/78 at East Brighton Park but then drew one and won four of our next five matches culminating in us winning Division Two in 1980. We next met Whitehawk in County League Division One in season 1981/82 when we won 5-0 (home) and drew 1-1 away. We again opened the following season at East Brighton Park on Saturday, 14th August, 1982 and we had conceded two goals when after 83 minutes Hastings Town goalkeeper Barry Duck swung on the wooden crossbar and it broke, no replacement being available the match was abandoned and a subsequent League hearing ordered that it be replayed which duly occurred on Saturday, 5th February, 1983 when we won 2-0 with goals from John Kemp and Russell Saunders in between those matches we had entertained Whitehawk in the semi-final of the Sussex RUR Charity Cup and won by the odd goal of five, Kemp and Saunders were also the scorers on that occasion together with Chris Tutt. The Hawks returned to The Firs on the May Day Bank Holiday when we won again 3-0 two of the goals were once more scored by Kemp and Saunders but this time the third was added by Gary Ray. In seasons 1983/84 and 1984/85 we lost both league games home and away. There was then a four year interval until we met again when we were paired together in the semi-final of the Sussex Senior Cup; we met at the Dripping Pan on Wednesday, 8th March, 1989 when we ran out winners 5-2 - with goals from Paul Giles (2), Pat Burt, Terry White and Carlton Wynter – to reach the Final at the Goldstone where we lost to Steyning Town. Five years then passed until our next meeting on Saturday, 22nd January, 1994 here in the third round of the Sussex Senior Cup when Whitehawk won 1-0. Summarised our previous encounters have resulted as follows for us in our former guises as Hastings & St. Leonards and Hastings Town:-

Our first meeting as Hastings United took place on Tuesday, 12th October, 2010 when we met in the second round of the Isthmian League Cup when we won 5-4 on penalties here following a 3-3 draw after extra time - The Hawks had their revenge the following season when they won a pre-season friendly 2-0. We then met three times during season 2012/13 drawing 2-2 away but losing 0-2 at home in the Ryman Premier Division where we did win 4-3 in a quarter-final League Cup tie. Since then we have met twice in pre-season matches here, the Hawks winning both. We visit East Brighton Park for the return league match on the evening of Tuesday, 4th February, 2020.

ON THIS DAY A look back at some of the matches played in past seasons on: Tuesday, 17th September.
1963 In the EUFA Cup Winners Cup first round, first leg Celtic travelled to Switzerland where they virtually assured progress with a 5-1 victory over Basel, Jon ‘Yogi’ Hughes netting a hat-trick. In the only Division One game played Nottingham Forest went second behind Manchester United with a 3-1 win against mid-table West Ham United. Neither of the top two in Division Two played while third placed Middlesbrough lost 1-2 at lowly Rotherham United, Bury moving up to fourth with a 4-1 win at home to Cardiff City. Division Three leaders Coventry City beat Crewe Alexandra 5-1 while the other two games finished goal less as Barnsley entertained Watford and Q.P.R. at Bristol Rovers. The three Division Four matches were all close affairs, second place Workington winning 3-2 at Doncaster Rovers while Southport and Bradford City shared six goals and the points while Bradford Park Avenue drew 2-2 with Stockport County.
We, then still Hastings & St. Leonards, did not start our fixtures in Division Two of the Sussex County League until the following Saturday when we would entertain Uckfield Town on the top pitch.
1991 The two British representatives who played in first round, first leg ties in the EUFA Cup Winners Cup both lost, Tottenham Hotspur going down 0-1 in Croatia to Hajduk Split while Swansea City were beaten 1-2 at home by Monaco. None of the top sides in Barclays Division One played in any of the four matches to take place, however, Notts. County won 3-1 at basement side Sheffield United while lowly Everton won 1-0 at Manchester City. In another match a mid-table clash West Ham United beat Crystal Palace by the odd goal of five. The top two in Division Two both won, Middlesbrough defeating Tranmere Rovers 1-0 while Cambridge United beat Wolves 2-1. Marco Gabbiadini scored a hat trick as Sunderland won 4-1 at Charlton Athletic; Brighton did not play. Division Three leaders Birmingham City defeated Chester City 3-2 to go two points clear after the second third placed sides were replaced following defeats. The top two in Division Four both won, Hereford United defeating York City 2-1 while Barnet beat Scunthorpe United 3-2.
We, then still Hastings Town, visited Redhill in the delayed first leg of the Final of the Southern Counties Floodlight Cup which we won 1-0 with a Danny Whyman goal before a crowd of 220.
2013 Both Manchester clubs were involved in UEFA Champions League group stage ties, City winning 3-0 against Viktoria Pizen in the Czech Republic while United had home advantage against German side Bayer Leverkusen winning 4-2 with Wayne Rooney bagging a brace. There were no Premiership matches but in the Npower Championship Leicester City moved up two places to top spot after beating Blackburn Rovers 2-1 while Blackpool lost 1-3 at Millwall and Q.P.R. not in action. In Division One Leyton Orient went five points clear of Peterborough after beating bottom side Notts. County 5-1. Wolves missing the opportunity to go second after being beaten 1-0 at home by Walsall in the other match Bristol City held Shrewsbury Town 1-1.
We had no midweek match it being the week after an F.A. Cup round where we had lost at home to Guernsey.

CANNONS APPOINT STEVE WATT AS NEW MANAGER
New centre back for the Hillians Burgess Hill Town manager Simon Wormull has strengthened his squad ahead of their home fixture with Sevenoaks Town, bringing in centre back Junior Baker. Junior spent last season with Hill's South East Division rivals, VCD Athletic, making thirty-nine appearances and scoring three goals - although, of course, his main role was to stop them, not score them! He got three goals during the previous season for the Vickers, too, so he's certainly consistent, and the Hillians would undoubtedly be happy if he got his full quota at once at the weekend, as they will be looking to revenge themselves for their 3-0 FA Cup defeat against Oaks three weeks ago. Junior turned out for Vickers local rivals Phoenix Sports prior to his move to Oakwood, and has also played for Grays Athletic, Tilbury and Cray Wanderers, amongst others.
A GOOD DAY FOR RAMSGATE Rams bring in Faversham keeper Shortly before their FA Cup draw with Arundel, Ramsgate announced that they had signed young goalkeeper Harry Day from Faversham Town. He was later on the bench for the Rams, but not called into action. Day made his debut for Town at the end of last season, in victory at East Grinstead Town. He hasn't made an appearance this season.

Former Margate boss takes the reins at Reachfields Only three days after Sam Denly announced his departure from the Hythe Town hot seat, the club have confirmed his replacement and it's a name you'll be familiar with. Steve Watt left Margate in May 2018 after a year in charge, almost immediately joining the management team at Maidstone United. He ended up as caretaker manager at the club soon afterwards, taking on the role after the departure of Jay Saunders, who of course ended up at ... Margate. He started his playing career with Aberdeen, moved to Chelsea, but made most of his professional appearances for Grimsby Town and Ross County.
