OUR NEW NUMBER 13 IS ONE OF OUR OWN!

Tom’s association with the U’s goes back to October 1979, when he started as a part-time groundsman under the newly appointed manager, Peter Sillett, with the remit of mowing, rolling and marking out the pitch. His tasks were made more onerous due to poor drainage under the Pilot Field, turning the playing surface into a mudbath by Christmas. Other daily tasks followed, including harrowing the speedway track, picking up litter, sweeping the stands and terraces, cleaning the dressing rooms and many other menial tasks, not to mention acting as Physio on a number of occasions. This role continued on and off until the late 1990’s when he took on the mantle of matchday PA Announcer until his retirement in 2012. Even to this day, he still looks for the U’s result first every Saturday, and although he’s now moved to Eastbourne, he can still be seen at home matches carrying on his support. We are proud to put the spotlight on one of our Hastings United Academy prospects, who through hard work, determination and skill has rightfully earned himself a regular spot in the First Team squad. We are happy to announce Tom Chalmers will be wearing the number 13 for the remainder of the 2019/20 season. Faversham Town have announced the departure of joint managers Phil Miles and Danny Chapman. The duo, who took over at the club just over eleven months ago with the club in fourteenth place in the South East Division, leave with it thirteenth place, with three wins, a draw and five defeats to show for this season's efforts. The decision was made following a Club board meeting last, which came after a one-nil Velocity Trophy defeat at home to Herne Bay. Chairman Paul Bennett thanked Miles and Chapman for their contribution, but stated: â&#x20AC;&#x153;I don't wish to go into details but the directors were unhappy with the direction that the club was going in, both on and off the pitch, and it was felt best to address that now while there is time to rectify it this season." 14

JAMES REJOINS THE HILLIANS Title-winning keeper heads back to Town Burgess Hill Town have announced the return to the club of their South Division title-winning keeper Josh James. Josh was also the last line of defence as they got to the 4th Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, and the Second Round Proper of the FA Trophy, both times losing to Dartford - all three achievements coming in 2014-15. Josh has most recently been with BetVictor Isthmian Premier side Horsham (for the second time in his career), but he has made only one appearance this season - ironically in FA Cup defeat against Dartford. He has only been away from the Green Elephants Stadium for this campaign, making forty four appearances for the Hillians last season, and one hundred and ninety in total.

SPORTS SIGN A STRIKER Former Lewes man heads to Phoenix Sports Phoenix Sports have announced the signing of former Lewes and Carshalton Athletic striker/midfielder Harry Harding. Harry moves to the Mayplace Ground from SCEFL side Chatham Town, who he joined in the summer. He has scored seven goals so far this season, but that's nothing compared to the previous campaign, when he found the back of the net forty five times as captain of Erith and Belvedere, firing them to promotion from SCEFL Division One. This won't be Harry's first time in the Isthmian League. He played for Lewes aged nineteen, joining the Rooks when they were still managed by Steve King in December 2011 before leaving for Carshalton Athletic. His time with the Robins was short, and he was back at the Dripping Pan in March 2013, after which he spent some time with Tonbridge Angels. Prior to that he had appeared for Bromley.

GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart A light hearted – and on many occasions, anything but light hearted, look at life here in what is now known as the BetVictor Isthmian League's South Eastern Division. My rants and raves are not connected with the club in any way. HYTHE AGAIN We seem to be going through a phase of “Haven't we seen you before?”........ Three Bridges twice – league and then league cup, Haywards Heath the same in a matter of four days and not too long after having played Hythe at Reachfields in the FA Trophy, it's Hythe again but with BetVictor points at stake this time. The Love my Rugby and hopefully as you read this it'll be following on from an England win in the World Cup Final this morning. Morning for you, evening for me back out in the Philippines in Angeles City. Whatever happened earlier today, seeing off the All Blacks a week ago was something else!

United celebrate Frannie Collin's goal at Dorking Wanderers two seasons ago. Not sure that any of the players shown here are still with us! league is absolutely top priority, of course. And this last two seasons has not seen United emerge with too many points from encounters with Hythe. The recent FA Trophy win was welcome after having failed to beat them in the previous four games. They have a decent side and in Steve Watt – who was, of course, here a couple of seasons ago with Darren Hare – a decent manager who is working hard at getting them into good nick after an indifferent start to the season. They were expected by many to feature in the promotion tussle but couldn't have made a worse start when they went to Burgess Hill on day one of the new season and got hammered 7-2. Ollie Rowe and Frannie Collin will presumably be in today's line up. They both did plenty of good things for United a couple of seasons ago and somewhat ironically I recall Ollie being as wound up as any of the United players who celebrated with supporters a gutsy 1-1 draw with 9 men at Reachfields a few years back. United through and through, a lot of people were sorry to see you move onto Ashford United, Ollie! Frannie's last United goal was in that memorable play-off semi-final at Dorking Wanderers at the end of the 16-17 season, a goal that so nearly got us a final berth against Corinthian Casuals. Hope they both have off days today, of course.

AND ANOTHER 4-0 Couldn't make it to Dunstable last Saturday. And I missed a comprehensive win which sees United into the 2nd qualifying round of the FA Trophy and a home tie with Bostik SE rivals, Whitehawk.

I can't be the only one who shakes his head and recalls some of the sides we used to play in years past back in our Southern Premier League days. The Southern Premier that fed straight into the Conference as the National League's top tier was then known. And a very decent standard of football it was too. One of the sides we used to play was Gloucester City â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the last time we were there was March 1999, Hastings Town as we still were, in turmoil as the Gardiner reign came to an end and we made our way westwards and won 3-2. City hadn't been at their ground that long and weren't to be there too much longer after catastrophic flooding wrecked Meadow Park in 2007.

They looked a very decent side when they were here earlier this season and having gone through a run of indifferent form since then, certainly got things dead right a week ago knocking out higher league opposition, Hendon 4-1. Hendon are not doing too well in Southern Prem South but all the same, credit to Whitehawk who will provide stiff opposition here again, next weekend. I did make it to Dunstable the previous time we were at Creasy Park. 1991-92, the first game of a memorable promotion season when we went up with Weymouth. That finished 4-0 too, 159 spectators saw Hastings Town make the best of starts with goals from Andy Blondrage 2, Sticky Willard and Paul Giles. Indeed we were to win our next game 4-0, at home to Margate the following Tuesday evening.

Since then they've ground shared here there and everywhere, but now there is light at the end of the tunnel and it appears that Meadow Park will see City play National North football once again. Yea, of course they were lucky and this was all a follow on from the traumatic close season goings on that saw Bury go belly up. And Chichester have done absolutely the right thing by making a contribution to the fund set up to assist the resuscitation of Bury. And they are in no way to blame for what happened at Gigg Lane. A step 4 club making it into the 2nd round of the FA Cup, ÂŁ82000 in the bank? Dead right they were chuffed and why shouldn't they show it? Good luck to City in the next round. Big slice of luck getting the bye but they've had to win some tough cup ties to get to that stage. Go well, Chi!

Hythe Town Football Club was formed in August 1910 although football in Hythe can be traced back into the previous century. The club joined the Folkestone and District Leagues and after the First World War had some success, four championships and only once outside the top three in fourteen seasons. They moved up into the Kent Amateur League in 1936 and were promoted into Division One before the Second World War intervened. The 50s and 60s saw little league success but that changed in the early 70s with three successive league titles and a Kent Junior Cup win. Hythe were granted senior status and elected into the Kent League in 1977, playing at the newly acquired Reachfields, an old army sports ground on the edge of the town’s firing ranges. The club were runners-up in the Kent League on three occasions but it was not until property developer Tony Walton took over Hythe Town in February 1988 that things really started to happen. That summer saw the ground developed to Southern League standard with seats and a social club, with viewing balconies, above new dressing rooms. Standing cover extended behind one goal and for the whole of the far side, and floodlights were installed. The ground capacity still remains at 3,000 with the majority under cover. The chairman proved to be a high-profile character who attracted much media attention with his high spending on the ground and team. Town won the 1988-9 Kent League title by 14 points and set a league record of 133 goals. The club gained promotion to the Southern League. The next season saw another promotion as the main aim, but the club’s great run to the FA Vase semi-finals handicapped their league ambitions,

with four games a week at times, and a sixth place finish. Hythe lost out to the eventual Vase winners Yeading, winning the home leg 3-2 in front of the club’s record attendance of 2,147, but cruelly losing the second leg 2-0 with the crucial goal coming from a big deflection. They did win the Eastern Professional Floodlight Cup at their first attempt. The following season was very similar, topping the table in November but runs in four cups again caused fixture congestion and a final placing of eighth. Hythe lost out to Trowbridge Town in a Vase quarter-final second replay, lost to Chelmsford City over two legs in the Southern League Cup final, but won the Kent Senior Trophy and retained the Eastern Professional Floodlight Cup. The club played 40 league games and 33 cup ties. In 1991/2 Hythe again topped the table in the early months but the money was beginning to run out. With little cup success, the exit from the Vase at Evesham United in February saw many of the team sold and their replacements could only finish thirteenth. the club did reach the final of the Kent Senior Cup, losing in extra-time to Bromley at Gillingham’s Priestfield Stadium. That match proved to be Walton’s last game, and he put the club into liquidation soon after. Supporters rallied round and entered a scratch side, as Hythe United, into the following season’s Kent County League and negotiated continued use of Reachfields Stadium. After three seasons the club regained senior status and in 1995 were elected back into the Kent League but the club would struggle for a number of seasons in the wrong half of the table. In 2001 Hythe dropped the “United” suffix, reverting to “Town” and in November 2002 appointed Paul Fisk as Manager. This proved a turning point and Hythe became a top six club. There was one exception, in 2005/6, when again the Vase was a distraction, winning five ties before going out to Winchester City in the fourth round, in front of 441 spectators at Reachfields.

HYTHE TOWN FC - HISTORY In season 2007/8 Hythe forced themselves to the top of the table in March and were considered to be favourites for the title. Disappointment was acute therefore when form was lost in the final weeks and the side not only slipped to fourth place, but also lost in the final of the League Cup. The highlight was a fantastic FA Cup win over Andy Hessenthaler’s Dover Athletic before a crowd of 1,109 at Reachfields, and achieving the important Ryman League ground grading. The club achieved runners-up spot the following season and then Scott Porter, who had been Paul Fisk’s assistant manager, took over as manager for the 2009/10 season with Clive Cook as his assistant. There were many good results but too many dropped points saw Hythe finish in third position. Town also progressed through three rounds of the FA Cup to be drawn against the full-time professionals of Woking who were relieved to escape with a replay after an exciting 2-2 draw at Reachfields. The replay was another tight match until the last few minutes when Woking scored three times to go through 5-1. The 2010/11 season was possibly the most successful in the history of the club, with Scott Porter and leading the playing side to the Kent League Championship for the first time in over twenty years, and with it promotion to the Ryman League. After a 22-match unbeaten run in the new-year, dropped points over Easter took the championship to the wire and the league was clinched in dramatic style on the last day of the season through a last-minute equaliser at Tunbridge Wells. This amazing achievement was coupled with the club’s best ever F.A. Cup run, and the best for any Kent League side in over 50 years. Hythe negotiated their way through six rounds, including memorable wins over higher league opposition at Concord Rangers of the Ryman Premier and at home to Staines Town of the Blue Square Bet South. The prize was an away

draw in the First Round Proper to League Two side Hereford United. It was one round too far on the pitch, the hosts comfortably winning 5-1 with Gary Mickelborough getting the Hythe goal. During the 2011/2 season the club maintained their progress and finished in eighth place in Ryman Division One South. Hythe were also able to get their hands on some silverware as wins over Ebbsfleet United and Dover Athletic were followed by a single goal victory in the final at Dartford to win the Kent Senior Cup. The following season ended with a 17-match unbeaten run and a fourth place finish. This brought about the club’s first play-off appearance, unfortunately losing at Faversham Town in the semi-final. After another eighth place finish Scott Porter and Clive Cook left the club at the end of 2013/4 and Tim Dixon was appointed as manager in May 2014. It was a disappointing season that saw the club finish in 16th position and after a poor start to 2015-6 the club decided to part company with Dixon in September. Clive Cook returned to take over, this time as manager and led a remarkable turnaround from 22nd place to fourth as the club qualified for the Ryman South play-offs for a second time. Defeat followed at Worthing in the semi-final. The club ended just outside the play-off zone last season and will look for an improved position this year. The club parted company with manager Clive Cook in January 2017 as ex-Herne Bay manager Sam Denly arrived to take his place. Again, we ended up just outside the play-off places in 2018/2019. A poor start to this season resulted in the departure of Sam Denly to be replaced by Steve Watt in September. HYTHE TOWN - PLAYER PROFILES Will Godmon (Goalkeeper - Age: 23) Will is an experienced keeper who is his second spell with the Cannons. He started his career in the Chelsea Youth set up before moving to Maidstone United where he had loan spells at Lewes and Faversham Town where he then signed permanently before moving for a short spell at Leatherhead before returning to Salters Lane. He then joined Hythe for his first spell making 50 appearances. He then joined Thamesmead before returning to Faversham and then onto Ramsgate before joining us in September.

Ryan Nicholls (Goalkeeper - Age: 22) Former Dartford goalkeeper Ryan Nicholls re-joined the club in the summer after six games last season during a loan spell with Hythe. He has also had spells with Chatham Town, Hastings United, Hollands & Blair and Aveley.

Danny Divine (Defender - Age: 19) Danny joined on loan from Maidstone United. The 19-year old came through the youth ranks at Gillingham signing his first pro deal last summer, but was released at the end of the season. The right-back never made a first-team appearance but gained experience of men's football on loan at Sittingbourne and Faversham.

Jamie Coyle (Defender - Age: 36) Jamie joined in October after he stepped down as joint-manager at Dartford and brings a vast experience to the Cannons back line. He started his career in the Youth set up at Crystal Palace before joining Gravesend & Northfleet. He has also had spells with Sittingbourne, Dulwich Hamlet, Welling United, Dartford, Leatherhead and Maidstone United.

Ollie Rowe (Defender - Age: 28) An experienced ex-Hastings United Central Defender, Ollie Rowe joined last season from Ashford United. Ollie started his career at Brighton & Hove Albion before moving to Eastbourne Borough. He has also had spells with Chelmsford City and Lewes.

Callum Adonis-Taylor (Defender - Age: 20) Callum came through the youth set up at Tonbridge Angels and he moved to Hythe at the start of this season. He is a defender who has spent time on loan at Herne Bay, VCD Athletic and Whyteleafe.

James Rogers (Defender - Age: 27) A highly experienced strong defender who started his career at Dartford before moving onto Dover Athletic. He spent three years at Maidstone United before joining Margate. He joined Hythe in October.

Aaron Simpson (Defender - Age: 20) Aaron began his career with Gillingham, turning professional in the summer of 2017 and moving on loan to Margate in January 2018. He signed a new one-year contract in July 2018 but decided to move on at the end of the season joining Hythe. Played 2 Checkatrade Trophy first team games for the Gills.

Charlie Webster (Midfielder - Age: 23) Former Gillingham youth player, Charlie joined Tonbridge Angels following a short loan spell after being released by the Gills. He joined Hythe in the summer of 2016 and is now starting his third year with the Cannons.

Tom Carlton (Midfielder - Age: 21) Tom signed last February from Herne Bay. He is an attacking midfielder who spent his school years in the youth set ups at Chelsea and West Ham United before joining Colchester United in their Academy.

Alex Brown (Midfielder - Age: 26) Alex started his career at Gillingham. During that time, he had loan spells with Whitstable Town, Corby Town and Maidstone United. He was then to sign permanently with the Stones. He then went on loan to Leatherhead and made the move permanent in January 2016. He then joined Dartford before joining Margate at the start of last season.

Tom Walmsley (Midfielder - Age: 18) Local lad, Tom is a midfielder who started his senior career at Folkestone Invicta before moving to Whitstable Town. He moved to Hythe in the latter part of last season.

Ross Ibbertson (Midfielder - Age: 23) Ross came through the youth set up at Gillingham. He has also played for Hollands & Blair and East Grinstead Town.

Alex Flisher (Striker - Age: 27) Alex Flisher joined us from Dartford in October 2019 having played most of his career with Maidstone United and Margate. He is a very dangerous winger who causes headaches for defenders.

Stephen Okoh (Striker - Age: 24) Experienced Striker Stephen Okoh joined Hythe from Bromley having also played for VCD Athletic, Bromley, Margate, Leatherhead and Stranraer.

Frannie Collin (Striker - Age: 32) Experienced striker, Frannie Collin joined us from Margate. He started his career with Gillingham where he made nine first team appearances before moving onto Dover. He also had spells with Tonbridge Angels, Maidstone Utd, Leatherhead and Hastings United.

Kiernan Hughes-Mason (Striker - Age: 27) Kieran started his career in the youth set up at Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur before making his league debut for Millwall where he played two first team games. He has had spells at a number of clubs including Hastings United. He recently spent time playing in New Zealand in their Premier League for Tasman United.

Aristide Bassele (Striker - Age: 25) Aristide spent some of his early football career at AFC Bournemouth going out on loan at Dorchester Town, Lincoln City and Welling United before joining Malden & Tiptree. He has also had spells with Hullbridge Sports and Great Wakering Rovers but more latterly he has been with Concord Rangers.

The Club Believes Customer Care starts on the inside, with a good team of staff and work ethic. Most of our staff are volunteers but The Club expect our staff to always do their best.

Please note that the officers and stewards of Hastings United Football Club will enforce Ground Regulations. A copy of these Regulations is posted at the entrance to each turnstile and within the ground on the wall next to the food bar.

Our staff should remain courteous even in difficult situations. The Club and its staff know they are offering a service and that they would like every customer to return.

Please note that the following are offences under the Football (Offences) Act 1991, as amended: the throwing of any object within the ground without lawful authority or excuse, the chanting of anything of an indecent or racist nature: the entry onto the playing area or any adjacent area to which spectators are not generally admitted without lawful authority or excuse.

We believe that people come first when offering a service.

Under the Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol etc.) Act 1985, the following are offences for which a person can be arrested by a police officer: attempting to enter the ground or being inside the ground whilst drunk: being in possession of any intoxicating liquor, or bottle, can or other portable container which could cause damage or personal injury when entering the ground.

We expect our staff to be friendly and helpful and to know their job or be able to call upon someone who is able to respond to the needs of our customers. We expect our staff to give their full attention to a customer in any situation that arises.

ON THIS DAY A look back at some of the matches played in past seasons on: Saturday, 2nd November.

1929 There was no change at the top of Division One as the first four sides all won at home, Leeds United beating Grimsby Town 6-0 while second placed Manchester City defeated Middlesbrough 3-1 while Aston Villa edged out basement side Manchester United 1-0. Jimmy Hampson and Jock Lauterdale netted as Division Two leaders Blackpool won 2-0 at Notts. County while second placed Oldham Athletic recorded a similar result at Stoke City. In Division Three South Southend United moved up one place by holding leaders Plymouth Argyle 1-1 replacing Brentford who lost 1-2 at Crystal Palace. Brighton leap frogged Northampton Town into fifth place after winning 3-1 at the County Ground with a Harry Vallence hat trick.

We, then Hastings & St.Leonards, having drawn 4-4 after extra time with Hove here the previous Saturday saw them return to stage the replay here which we won 5-1 with goals from Wickens (2), Harffrey, Hodd and Pain.

1968 Goals were at a premium in Division One where ten matches saw just sixteen scored with seven coming in one game, balanced by four 0-0 draws. The top two were both involved in separate goal less games which enabled Everton to go into first place with a 2-0 win over Sunderland. The high scorers were West Ham United who went up to sixth after defeating basement side Q.P.R. 4-3. a three point spread covered the seven sides at the top of Division Two where a 3-0 victory at Norwich City saw Millwall leap frog them into first place. Several Division Three games had been played the previous evening including Brighton’s match at Stockport County which they lost 1-2; menwhile Swindon Town beat Southport 5-1 while Watford defeated Gillingham 2-1. There was no change at the top of Division Four despite leaders Darlington only drawing 2-2 at Chesterfield while Aldershot were winning 4-2 at Brentford.

We, then still Hastings & St. Leonards, held Bognor Regis Town to a 1-1 draw in a Sussex Senior Cup second round tie, our goal scored by Alan Selway.

1996 Barclays Premiership leaders Arsenal left themselves vulnerable to being overtaken by second and third placed Newcastle and Liverpool who did not play until the following day after the Gunners were held 2-2 at fourth placed Wimbledon: Ian Wright back at his former home ground put the visitors ahead only for Vinnie Jones to equalise before half time. Paul Merson restored Arsenal’s lead only for Marcus Gayle to level the scores just before the end. Bolton Wanderers extended their advantage at the top of Division One to six points by beating Huddersfield Town 2-0 with goals from John McGinlay and Alan Thompson while second placed Norwich City lost 1-2 at home to a lowly placed Charlton Athletic side. Millwall went top of Division Two after defeating lowly Walsall 1-0 at the New Den going above Brentford who were beaten 0-2 at challengers Watford. Fuham’s lead at the top of Division Three was cut to four points after they were beaten 1-2 at home by Lincoln City and second placed Cambridge United won 3-1 at Hull City. Bottom placed Brighton recorded what was to be their only away win of the season with a 3-2 victory at Hartlepool United with goals from Mark Morris, Jeff Minton and Denny Mundee.

We visited Cambridge City in the Premier Division of the Southern League where we won 3-1 with goals from Kieran O’Shaunnessy, Steve Ullathorne and Steve Willard before a crowd of 290.
