FROM THE BOARDROOM WELCOME

Billy Wood

Welcome everyone back to the Pilot Field today after another exciting week at the football club. Before I get into that I would like to welcome the team, management, committee and supporters of Phoenix Sports here today.

were hoping would be a waiting ambulance, alas no ambulance would be available for 2 hours so Adam took Ollie with Steph McCrossan to the local hospital. A big thank you to you both, it just shows how united we are as a club.

Well what can I say about this week, cup fever at its best! In what can only be described as a bit of a disappointing draw here last Saturday we went off to Whitehawk for the replay Tuesday night. The team comprised 7 changes from the weekend as some of our incredible talents including Tom Chalmers and James Pool got the nod to start against the very best Whitehawk side that could be put out. The team we put out was considered by outsiders as ‘weakened’, but I think they need to take a closer look at what’s going on here as a football club, to learn this much about us …. WE DON’T DO WEAKENED!

Weymouth await us in the next round and personally I can’t wait for the trip. It holds a lot of sentimental value to me and I expect it to be one hell of a game. After a discussion with the Board we have decided to offer £10 travel to Weymouth for our supporters. I believe this is a real opportunity to experience a great away day this season in cup competition. Pat and I have personally decided to subsidise a certain amount of the travel to make it cheaper for you all. Let’s go down in numbers and enjoy a proper day out. But today we are back to what we have to consider the priority business, the league. Still unbeaten as we dive deeper into November and we keep marching on. I have no doubt that the support you all are showing Aggy and the lads is playing a huge role, so today we continue that. Last week we went to battle in the noise stakes with Whitehawk and on Tuesday night I believe you all were louder than the home support, so today I urge you, FIND YOUR VOICE, SING TOGETHER, SHOUT LOUD AND PROUD!

To cut a fine story short the lads delivered with a 2-1 victory. I would like to say a massive congratulations to the the squad, this wasn’t about just the starting 11 but each player in this amazing team. The only bad news was a broken collarbone for Ollie Weeks, I was embarrassed by Whitehawk’s lack of stewardship and help in the situation, if it wasn’t for their manager Jude rushing from the dugouts, we wouldn’t have got a stretcher to take Ollie off the pitch. Thank you Billy to Adam and my pal Jon who alongside myself and Dane had to carry the stretcher to what we Billy Wood HUFC Chief Executive Officer

TODAY’S MASCOTS

Amelie Randall-Smith (Aged 11) Amelie is a quiet football fan, unlike her noisy brothers. She has watched the game from a toddler with her Dad. She has been to Wembley, West Ham, The Amex and the new White Hart Lane! Amelie likes the live game, especially at the Pilot Field and enjoys a kickabout with the players. Maybe one day she may join a team ... who knows!! She is excited about the next two weeks as a mascot.

08

Reuben (Aged 9) & Henry (Aged 6) Randall-Smith Reuben is football mad, he loves the statistics of a game and is very knowledgeable about all the Premier league and all the HUFC players. He has been a mascot a few times now and loves it. He is counting the days to the big Man Utd match next month.

Henry is the most crazy boy about the game, morning, noon and night it's football football football he loves the Pilot Field and the boys. He follows the match from the 1st minute to the 90th and as for being mascot and meeting the players he is on cloud 9. He has mentioned meeting Chris and the boys to everyone we know. One day he will play on that pitch!!

YESTERDAY ONCE MORE Kevin Barry 1949 - 2011 Kevin Barry (Left) receives the Observer Player of the Year trophy from previous winner Gerry Armstrong (Right). Credit: Hastings & St. Leonards Observer.

Kevin was the uncle of England international, Gareth Barry. A rich vein of sporting talent ran through his family. I first met Kevin at Grove secondary school, St Leonards-on-Sea during the early 60s. We once opened the bowling for the school team. In a howling gale, Kevin commanded better control of the hooping swing than me. But football was his game. Like me, he transferred to Hastings Grammar School at the age of sixteen. Here, his aerial dominance and sharp shooting attracted the interest of the FA selectors. While disappointed to find himself overshadowed by future Manchester United, Newcastle and Bolton star, Alan Gowling, he was pleased to represent the England Grammar School side, winning three caps. Kevin’s nephew, Gareth Barry, also attended this school, subsequently known as the Ark William Parker Academy, as did former Portsmouth, Sunderland and Burnley midfielder, Kevin Ball, and ex-Sussex and England cricketer, Mike Yardy. Burly Kevin was a prodigious goalscorer at school, but it was his explosive pace which troubled the Yeovil defenders in his Southern League debut for the U’s on 21 October 1967. In that abject 1967/68 season, only 16 points were won. Relegation was inevitable. For the 1968/69 season, he became a centre back. However, he reverted to a striking role in the following year when he scored twenty-two Southern League goals and thirty in all competitions. He netted twenty-one times in 1970/71, too, bringing about his transfer to Chelsea in July 1971 for £2,000, worth around £2m today. Alas, after playing a handful of reserve games he returned to Southern League football with Margate in November 1971, after the Kent club paid a ‘substantial’ fee for him. He scored 34 goals in 91 Southern League appearances before being enticed back to Hastings in September 1973 for a four-figure fee. He scored ten goals for the U’s in 1973/74. But it was as a centre back that he captained Hastings to promotion to the Premier Division at the end of the 1976/77 season, under Bobby Drake. Everybody liked Kevin. He never allowed success to go to his head. He remained grounded, affable, accessible, committed and courteous. One former team-mate, Sidley manager, John Lambert said ‘He taught me so much about defending, so much about football and how to conduct myself.’ Unfortunately, his career at Hastings did not end well. He objected to the appointment of Cyril Jeans in 1979 as temporary manager in place of Bobby Drake. The club banned him. Kevin left, becoming a player and manager at Hastings Town and Rye United, before turning to the bar trade in Spain and England. Tragically, Kevin died in 2011 after losing a brave battle against cancer. He is fondly remembered by all who knew him. Tim Quelch author of Good Old Sussex by the Sea about growing up with the U’s.

GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart A light hearted – and on many occasions, anything but light hearted, look at life here in what is now known as the BetVictor Isthmian League's South Eastern Division. My rants and raves are not connected with the club in any way.

SUPERB Well it was, wasn't it? A much changed side winning that FA Trophy replay at Whitehawk who had been stringing some decent results together of late, a Whitehawk side that are probably the best opposition United have come across this season. Well done all concerned. It was just getting light here out in the Philippines when Footballwebpages confirmed the result.

All happening at Romford! Let's see how Glenn Tamplin's new venture goes. 15 new signings in a day .......

3.45 AM! What a time to kick off! And I stayed to the bitter end and as the night receded here, 8000 or so miles away, I celebrated an outstanding United win at Whitehawk on Tuesday.

OUT ERE

The things you find on Twitter. Ajax supporters helping out London binmen. Whatever next ....... 16

It's around 30 degrees most days. And when it rains, it RAINS. But it’s a warm rain so when I make my lopsided way back up Fields Avenue to the hotel after an evening supping San Miguel, it just doesn't matter. Phil Glazier on the fans forum mentioned my whinges about November weather back home and what I've heard elsewhere confirms I'm in the right place.

LOOKING BACK ..... September 2017. Truly a month to forget after, initially,a first class display at Ryman Premier Dulwich Hamlet where United more than matched their higher grade opposition in front of 1288 spectators before going down 3-1. United failed to win that month back in the early days of what was to be a short lived Adam Hinshelwood reign. He had taken over from Darren Hare who had gotten the U's into the previous season's play-offs and a penalty shootout loss to Dorking Wanderers. Time has moved on. Dorking Wanderers are now doing nicely in National South after running away with last season's Bostik Premier while we are frustratingly still a step 4 club. That September was truly a bad month on the results front. P 6 W 0 D 1 L 5, for 9 against 17. The 2nd game that month was away to this afternoon's opponents and it was clear that afternoon that changes were afoot. Billy Medlock didn’t play for us again and Charlie Horlock picked the ball out of his net three times on a debut he would've wanted to forget. We ended up beaten 3-0 and after a 1-1 draw with Cray Wanderers were away to Molesey where another frustrating afternoon saw us lose 4-3. We'd lost 5-4 there the previous season, two encounters producing 16 goals. And no reward. But things did start to pick up even if we finished that month winless. 2-0 up at home to Herne Bay ended with a 4-2 defeat with a 2-1 reversal to follow at Walton Casuals who were to go up via the play-offs. They are now a Southern League Premier South side and holding their own with a lot more mileage to cover than they ever did at this level. But yes, things

did start to pick up. I saw Chris Agutter's interview on Twitter after the Molesey debacle and thought then that we'd be ok. And two years on we are more than ok. Two years = time. Time to take the playing side on with new methods which are reaping dividends. We showed last season we were making progress and continue to do so this season. Credit to Chris and his team and the club for sticking it out. We haven't won anything, we are still a step 4 club but heading the right way. Things looked pretty parlous when we lost that September afternoon at Phoenix Sports. Here's hoping we do a whole lot better today.

Weymouth of National South await in the next round of the Trophy. Our first visit since 2002-2003 when 690 spectators saw a 1-1 draw. The point wasn't enough and the 160 mile trip home was a silent one with relegation confirmed from the Southern Premier. Pictured above: Landry Zahana-Oni on the ball with United scorer Nick Hegley in the background. GUT FEELING Cont P18

Simon Stoddart BRING ‘EM ON We're seeing it here - the young‘uns stepping up from the Academy and doing the business at Isthmian SE level. And the same is happening at Chelsea where the thoroughly likeable Frank Lampard is finding the closed transfer windows actually reaping benefits as he brings on the young’uns like Tammy Abrahams and Mason Mount. Great to see these boys doing so well as Lampard adopts the Agutter way ..........

ENJOY THE DAY, CHI Chichester City's reward in the FA Cup 2nd round draw - away to Tranmere or Wycombe Wanderers. Be lucky Chi.

Remember this? Us old timers will recall a famous 4-2 win that summer evening. 18

TODAY’S VISITORS Phoenix Sports Club was formed in 1935 as St. Johns Welling, which later changed its name to Lakeside. After the Second World War they reformed and renamed Phoenix as it was seen to be rising from from the ashes of the previous two clubs amid the destruction of the blitz. They played at various locations in the local area including Danson Park, until 1950 when the local council offered them a piece of waste land in Mayplace Road East, Bexleyheath. This has now evolved into the Sports Ground that we now know as The Club. Football and Cricket have been played at Mayplace Road East, and many members past and present have represented the club by playing both sports, but with the growth of junior football, cricket has now moved away. After entering the Sidcup League, Kent Amateur League, and the Dartford League, the club settled in the Kent County Football League Division One West, finishing runners-up twice in the 1950s, and once in the 70s. Due to financial difficulties we were forced to form a Limited Company and are now called Phoenix Sports Club (1982) Limited. The club entered the Spartan League in 198687 and competed there for six seasons. They then returned to the Kent County League Division One West, winning the Challenge Cup in 1993-94. We won the league in 1999-2000, gaining promotion to the Premier Division, however after two relegations we ended up in Division Two West. We won Division Two West in 2004-05 and Division One West in 2007-08, regaining our Kent County League Premier Division status. Various honours have come our way over the years, but unfortunately records are fairly sparse. We have won the Hospitals Charity Cup Division 1 twice in recent seasons.

20

In recent years we have seen a steady improvement in the standard of football played at Phoenix, especially after the introduction of our Saturday morning soccer academy for juniors and a new management team at our senior level. This resulting in the 1st team winning Div 2 of the Kent County Football League, The West Kent Challenge Shield, The Hospitals Charity Cup and the Kent Junior Cup in season 2004-2005. Maintaining steady progress to win the Div 1 Championship and promotion to the Premier Division and also the West Kent Challenge Shield and the Hospitals Charity Cup again, followed by a win in the KCFA Intermediate Challenge Shield. After 3 seasons in the Premier Division, the first team became founder members of the Kent Invicta League at step 6 of the National League System, (step 10 of the English Football League system) the highest level of football the club has ever played at. We went on to finish runners-up, missing out by only two points to eventual champions Bly Spartans as well as reaching the League Cup Final, again losing out to Bly Spartans. The Reserves also had a good season winning Division 2 of the Kent Hurliman League and Finalists in the Kent Intermediate Cup. This past season our 3rd senior team (The A Team) gained entry into the Kent County League, winning Reserve Division West and reaching the final of the KCFA Junior Cup group A and the Hospitals Charity Cup. Unfortunately the 1st team and Reserve team Management both decided to resign for personal reasons at the end of season 20112012. After an exhaustive process the club appointed Steve O’Boyle and Tony Beckingham as Joint 1st Team Managers, and John Hope as Manager for the Reserves assisted by Brian Magenis and John Barry. Whilst off the pitch new floodlights were installed and a 108 seat stand.

PHOENIX SPORTS FC PHOENIX RISING After a successful campaign and losing only 2 League games the 1st Team managed to win the Kent Invicta League Championship to gain promotion to the Kent League, which has been renamed as Southern Counties East Football League. After finishing in 6th place in the inaugural season, the Club made some more ground improvements and received confirmation of an ‘F’ Grade. Aiming to a higher finish, hoping for maybe 4th spot, for the next season. A very good start was made to the 14-15 season but unfortunately lost in our first ever appearance in the FA Cup. Losing on penalties after a replay. Phoenix then enjoyed an unbelievable run in both the League and FA Vase. The Vase journey was fantastic culminating in reaching the 5th Round Proper, losing to the eventual winners North Shields. In the League, Phoenix only lost one game all season and accumulated 30 clean sheets. Due to these performances they managed to win the League quite comfortably in the end, although there were a few sticky moments. These achievements meant that the Club also had to work miracles off the pitch, but eventually managed to get all the necessary works done in time to gain ‘D’ Grade and promotion to the Ryman League North Division. After a long 1st season in 2015-16, 14th place of 24 teams was achieved. This was regarded as a great result for the club. After another hard season, 16-17, where Sports were in and around the play-off places for most of it, the 1st team were cursed by manager, Boyley, winning the Manager of the Month award for March, and managed to go the rest of the season without picking up another point, and finishing in 8th place. After a decent start to the 17/18 season and sitting in the play-off spots for a while, we were rocked by the departure of 1st Team Manager

Steve O’Boyle. This coincided with a blip in form, but new Manager, Paul Bryon, steadied the ship and we finished in a creditable 11th place. We now look forward to the 2018-19 season in the Bostik South East Division. PHOENIX FAMILY Alongside the 1st Team and the Reserves, we presently have a total of 38 teams playing in Phoenix colours, making us one of the biggest clubs in the area. Phoenix are also a FA Charter Standard Community Club - the highest level of youth recognition from the Football Association. Mini-soccer is played at the Mayplace Ground and Sundays are always busy with parents cheering on the youngest players to wear the green shirt.

PHOENIX SPORTS - MANAGEMENT & PLAYER PROFILES - 2019/20 Paul Bryon: The Manager – Paul took over the Phoenix hot seat in October 2017 after long term Manager Steve O’Boyle suddenly left the club. Bryon was Assistant Manager at the time and was the obvious choice to step up and take over at the helm. He was able to guide Phoenix to an 11th place finish last season and will have an aim of improving on that this time. His backroom staff include Nick Davis, Tony Rossiter, Bill Sullivan and Poppy Chamberlain. Steve Phillips: Keeper – Captain – Legend – Steve has been at the club for the last 5 years and is one of the most popular people around the club. ‘Frenchie’ is one of the best keepers in the League, is solid, reliable and is regularly pulling off eye-catching saves. Ryan Andrews: Our longest serving first team player. Ryan is our own Kieron Trippier and can regularly be seen flying up and down the right wing, whipping in crosses or tracking back to make a last-gasp tackle. After 6 years at the Mayplace Ryan is part of the furniture and has progressed with the club through the Leagues to our new home in the Bostik South East. Jack Barry: Jack is a no-nonsense Centre-Back who is enjoying his second spell at the club. Can count Romford, Thamesmead Town and Aveley as former clubs. He may take pride in the team keeping clean sheets but you also regularly see his name on the scoresheet. Danny Young: Danny is a very experienced Centre-Back that also likes to claim the odd goal. After a few seasons at Greenwich Borough he made the short move to the Mayplace in 2017 and has also played for Cray Wanderers in the past. Ashley Probets: Vastly experienced left-back who started off his footballing life at Arsenal. The 34-yearold played League football for Rochdale before having spells with Welling, Barnet, Thamesmead Town and VCD Athletic among others. Dangerous from set-pieces Ashley is our Mr Reliable and quite possibly the most recognisable face at the club. Lewis Clarke: Lewis has made the left wing-back position his own this season and has impressed us all with his consistent displays. He worked his way through the Greenwich Borough system before joining us last year with his highlight for us being his FA Cup goal at Lancing in September. Jack Hopkins: A born winner ‘Hoppo’ is an inspiration to the rest of our team. He is a very experienced Centre Midfielder that has a keen eye for goal. Last season his goal tally hit double figures including a hattrick in the FA Cup which resulted in his name being featured on the Cup Final Ball. Zak Bryon: A young and versatile midfielder that is comfortable in holding and attacking roles. Worked his way into the First Team from the Reserves and is now a vital member of the side. Scored the match winner against Thamesmead Town earlier in the season and will be expecting to get a few more before the campaign is out. Jeff Duah-Kessie: Forward and target man Jeff joined Phoenix last year from SCEFL side Croydon FC. The big man has great hold up play and has started the season very well by being one of the top scorers in the Division. Defenders know they have been in a game when they play against him. Kenny Aileru: Young prospect that has stepped up from the Reserve side and is now getting minutes for the First Team. Is going to be a vital part of the squad this season and can fit into many attacking and midfield positions. Lee Bird: Key squad player that is ready to fit in anywhere along the back line or but especially at wing-back. Is sure to get more game time as the games mount up for the club and is solid and dependable when he gets his chance. Kyren Mundle-Smith: A former Millwall youth player Kyren joined Phoenix this year and has already played a number of times for the First Team. An attacking midfielder, he likes to take his man on and is sure to get on the scoresheet a number of times in the coming months. He can count Three Bridges and Walton Casuals among former sides.

HASTINGS UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB POLICIES

Customer Charter Full details of our Customer Charter are available at our website: www.hastingsunited.com. These include our policy on ticket and pricing, abandoned matches and our involvement in the Hastings Community.

Health & Safety Hastings United Football Club takes seriously your health and safety during your visit to the Pilot Field.

The Club Believes Customer Care starts on the inside, with a good team of staff and work ethic. Most of our staff are volunteers but The Club expect our staff to always do their best.

Please note that the officers and stewards of Hastings United Football Club will enforce Ground Regulations. A copy of these Regulations is posted at the entrance to each turnstile and within the ground on the wall next to the food bar.

Our staff should remain courteous even in difficult situations. The Club and its staff know they are offering a service and that they would like every customer to return.

Please note that the following are offences under the Football (Offences) Act 1991, as amended: the throwing of any object within the ground without lawful authority or excuse, the chanting of anything of an indecent or racist nature: the entry onto the playing area or any adjacent area to which spectators are not generally admitted without lawful authority or excuse.

We believe that people come first when offering a service.

Under the Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol etc.) Act 1985, the following are offences for which a person can be arrested by a police officer: attempting to enter the ground or being inside the ground whilst drunk: being in possession of any intoxicating liquor, or bottle, can or other portable container which could cause damage or personal injury when entering the ground.

We expect our staff to be friendly and helpful and to know their job or be able to call upon someone who is able to respond to the needs of our customers. We expect our staff to give their full attention to a customer in any situation that arises.

In Addition We expect our staff and volunteers to care about their job as this will ensure they care about our customers. We expect our staff and volunteers to treat every customer as they would like to be treated themselves. We in return expect our customers to treat our volunteers and staff with respect and The Club will not tolerate any physical or verbal abused aimed at them.

ON THIS DAY A look back at some of the matches played in past seasons on: Saturday, 16th November.

1957 The top two in Division One met at Molyneux where leaders Wolves were held 1-1 by W.B.A. and while third placed Preston won 3-1 at bottom side Leicester City they were still five points adrift of top spot. Division Two leaders Blackburn Rovers beat Cardiff City 4-0 going two points clear of Liverpool who lost 1-3 at Ipswich Town. John Atyeo scored all the goals as Bristol City won 3-0 at Sheffield United and there were another three for Vic Keeble as West Ham United beat Stoke City 5-0 while Johnny Haynes scored twice as third placed Fulham edged past Huddersfield Town 2-1. It was also F.A. Cup first round day and goals were plentiful: Ron Saunders netted five as Gillingham defeated Eastern Counties side Gorleston 10-1, Peter Thompson netted four times as Hartlepool United beat Prescot 5-0 and there were also four for Derek Reeves of Southampton as they won 6-1 at Walton & Hersham. Dave Sexton scored twice as Brighton defeated Walsall 2-1.

We, then Hastings & St.Leonards, having previously drawn twice before going out to Brighton side Old Varndeanians in the F.A. Amateur Cup and having lost again to them at home in the league four weeks earlier, we lost 0-4 with the prospect of yet another meeting three weeks later in the first round of the Sussex Senior Cup.

1985 Leaders Manchester United’s advantage at the top of Division One was reduced to five points when they were held 0-0 at home by mid-table Tottenham Hotspur while Liverpool beat bottom team W.B.A. at Anfield. Below them Chelsea kept up the pressure with a 3-1 win at Newcastle United. In Division Two leaders Portsmouth surprisingly lost 0-1 at Grimsby Town allowing Wimbledon to move within four points with a 2-1 win over basement side Shrewsbury Town while Brighton stayed in tenth place despite defeating Huddersfield Town 4-3. All but two of the forty F.A. Cup first round ties took place and all but ten were resolved at the first attempt. The thirty-two non-league sides performed well without any shocks; Bishop Stortford drew 2-2 with Peterborough, V.S. Rugby had a similar score line with Leyton Orient and Windsor & Eton held Torquay 1-1 while Dartford managed a goal less draw at Bournemouth. Amongst the non-leaguers to progress was Bognor Regis Town who won 2-0 at fellow non-league outfit Enfield.

We, then still Hastings Town, entertained Waterlooville in the Southern Division of the Southern League a match we won 2-0 with goals from Peter Heritage and a visiting defender before a crowd of just 109.

2013 It was an International Week so there were no matches in both the Premiership and the Championship with three of the four Home Countries playing the previous evening. England lost 0-2 to Chile at Wembley Stadium in an F.A. 150th Anniversary match while in friendlies Northern Ireland lost 0-1 in Turkey while Scotland were held 0-0 at home by the U.S.A. On this day Wales played Finland in a friendly but were denied a 1-0 victory by an equaliser in added time. In Division One a lone Ethan Ebanks-Laudell goal was enough for Wolves to take over the leadership after they won at Notts. County. Leyton Orient dropped to second after losing 0-1 at home to a Joe Garner goal for Preston. Crawley Town having made the long trip to Carlisle United improved the mood for the return journey with a Billy Clarke equaliser for a 1-1 draw two minutes from time. Fleetwood Town lost the leadership of Division Two after losing 0-1 to basement side Northampton Town while Oxford United were winning 3-1 at Mansfield Town.

We visited Tolworth to play Corinthian-Casuals in Division One (South) of the Ryman Isthmian League where we draw 2-2 with goals from Matt Darby and Kenny Pogue before a crowd of just 157.
