FROM THE BOARDROOM WELCOME

Billy Wood

In what has been a very busy month, we are back here for what shall be another exciting game for us all. At this time I would like to welcome the supporters, the management team and the players of Brighton & Hove Albion to the Pilot Field.

so far and put the real praise at the door of our other Directors; Pat, Hayley and Jo. The have all been exceptional to work alongside and long may that continue. On top of those guys just another shout out to our amazing staff and volunteers, the best in Sussex by far!

The first thought that comes into my mind as I sit here typing the notes is the video that was posted on social media of our fans singing at the end of the game at the weekend. On Saturday we recorded our highest attendance of the season and I feel so proud that in the cold months of winter we are growing in size and not depleting. It means the world to us all at this club to see and let’s keep that up. If you are a regular try and bring one extra person with you so they can see that the stigma of non league football isn’t true. Aggy’s team play football in the right way and the more we highlight this to the wider audience in our town the word will continue to spread, Hastings is a football town and long may that continue. The community is important to me, this past weekend I was happy to welcome a few guests from the local grassroots football community and it’s my main goal to deliver something that continues to strengthen those links. You can talk the talk but it’s walking the walk which is the most important aspect, I hope I am proving to you all I am willing to do that for our club.

Chris and the management team are doing such an incredible job this season, the balance of top quality and youth has been brilliant and tonight is a little treat for all the hard work we have been putting in, by welcoming a Premier League club to our ground. Yes it will be a young Brighton side tonight but I am anticipating a very enjoyable style of game with two sides looking to play the right way. Going into these winter months we are as a club always making sure Chris and the management team have what they need and if more recruits are needed we will support. I made a point of the budget not being structured in a regimental way but in a way that makes sure we can achieve our goals. Will we be silly? No! Will we support and be competitive? ABSOLUTELY! Enjoy tonight, show everyone again why we have the best support and why I believe we are the biggest club in East Sussex ;-) COYU Billy

The Sussex Senior Cup gives us the opportunity to rest any tired legs and give further opportunities to our vibrant Academy players as well as any First Teamers that need the game-time .... to be quite honest it’s a competition that is well down on our priority list ..... HOWEVER, we know that whatever HUFC team we put out it will always be competitive and honest AND with the intention to win.

Chris Agutter

The Sussex Senior Cup gives us the opportunity to rest any tired legs and give further opportunities to our vibrant Academy players ...

LEAGUE NEWS From: Ian Townsend

A FLOCK OF ... RAMS A new quartet arrive at Ramsgate First in comes a left back, Harry Brown. Harry has played for Whitstable Town and Herne Bay in recent years. He is joined by striker Tyrell Mitford, who started life at Queens Park Rangers, and has also played for Gosport Borough, Winchester City and Beaconsfield Town. Nick Treadwell is a former Ram returning to his old stomping ground after spending the second half of last season turning out for Whitstable Town, making ten appearances and scoring two goals. He has also spent some time in New Zealand, and - much closer to home - with Deal Town. Finally, Charlie Hallett moves up a level from Canterbury City. He was formerly a part of the Gillingham Academy.

The Sussex Senior Challenge Cup is the longest running cup competition in the county having first been played for in the 1882/83 season, shortly after the founding of the Sussex County FA.

OAKS BRING IN ANGELS DEFENDER

BAY BRING BACK CARLTON

Smith heads to Greatness Park

No, not the doorman from Rhoda - Tom Carlton from Hythe Town!

Tonbridge Angels have announced that their young defender Liam Smith has signed dual registration terms with South East Division highflyers Sevenoaks Town. Liam was an important part of the Angels squad as they earned promotion last season, and was on the bench as they defeated first Merstham and then Metropolitan Police in two Play-off Finals - but has featured very little since they started life as a National League South club. Angels manager Steve McKimm explained: "This is a sensible move for Liam as it will give him more game time, but also means we can call him back should circumstances arise."

FAVERSHAM APPOINT A NEW MANAGER Former Chatham boss heads to Salters Lane Faversham Town have announced that their new manager is former Chatham Town boss James Collins. Collins has already appointed his coaching team, with former Town player Nick Davis becoming his assistant, and Brad Sandeman his first team coach. Collins resigned from his post at Chatham at the end of September, after almost two years in charge. He left with the club at the top of the Southern Counties East Premier Division, and was extremely highly-regarded, winning two trophies during his time in charge- the first the club had picked up in twenty years. He replaces Phil Miles and Danny Chapman, the joint managers who departed Salters Lane on October 23rd.

14

Tom Carlton left Herne Bay for Hythe Town back in February explaining that he was frustrated, but his frustration has obviously been soothed as this morning he was announced as a new signing for his former club. Tom first appeared for Bay in 2017-18, making 45 appearances and scoring seven goals. He made another thirty three last season, scoring seven more, before his departure for Reachfields, where he has made more appearances than any other squad member this season - twenty - to add to the ten he made last season as the Cannons ended the campaign in seventh place. But now he's back where he began.

HILLIANS BRING IN A BRIGHT SPARK South Park defender joins his former manager at the Green Elephants Stadium Burgess Hill Town have announced the signing of South Park defender Harry Pollard. Pollard has been an ever present in the Sparks defence this season, making seventeen appearances so far this season. These followed the twenty five he made last year, his arrival and that of his manager, Jay Lovett, coinciding with the upturn in the teams fortunes that saw them claw their way out of trouble after looking doomed to relegation earlier in the season. He has now followed Lovett, the manager who took him to Whitehall Lane from Eastbourne Borough, to Burgess Hill Town. Prior to his time at Eastbourne Borough, Harry was part of the youth setup at Charlton Athletic.

GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart True spirit of semi-pro football ... A light hearted – and on many occasions, anything but light hearted, look at life here in what is now known as the BetVictor Isthmian League's South Eastern Division. My rants and raves are not connected with the club in any way.

PHOENIX SPORTS Great result Saturday. Frustrating waiting around all day for kick-off - these 11pm schedules for United followers 8 hours adrift in a very different time zone are killers, though it has to be said, not so much as the 3.45 am kick off at Whitehawk a week ago ....... But Saturday. By all accounts a first class performance. The usual marvels of social media were buzzing away on my phone keeping me up to date as the U's trimmed pace setters, Cray Valley PM's lead back to two points. Absolutely vital we remain right in there while the exciting distractions - and distractions is what they are - of the FA Trophy, see us go into arrears on our BetVictor SE campaign. Next weekend's 160 mile trek to Weymouth just another away day in our Southern League days - will see us a couple of games short. Cray Valley only getting a point at home to Hythe on Saturday while we were winning here was indeed vital. Worst case scenario - we lost and they won, and won again next Saturday while we are FA Trophy preoccupied - 10 point gap. Stay in touch - stay in touch.

16

Tupps! Paul Tuppenny - Hastings Town stalwart of yesteryear. Always good to chew the fat with him. Top fella.

TWENTY YEARS ON ..... Where did 20 seasons go? Er - quickly. 1999-2000 was our first season in the Southern League's Eastern Division as the club settled down to life post Mark Gardener and his short lived Lottery splurge. That was a pretty busy season too with Hastings Town - as we then were - playing 59 games. 42 league and 17 cup ties with two finals being reached with a 5th place finish. We weren't quite the finished product that a promotion winning side needs to be and had to watch Folkestone Invicta and Fisher Athletic go up. No play offs - promotion was settled properly in those days. The fluid nature of semi pro football is illustrated when you look at the league table of 20 years ago. We only play Ashford and Sittingbourne nowadays. Look at the travelling for a standard of football that would've been a bit better than what we play now. Those days were four of five years prior to the formation of Conference South and North which diluted the standard of football in the leagues immediately below the two new ones.

dedicated away day followers thought nothing of it. I still recall a freezing February evening at Spalding, one of the nut case 9 or 10 who went up on the team coach. Happy days! Two finals reached - runners up in both. Lost 2-6 on aggregate to Premier Division Burton Albion in the League Cup final and then played out of their skins against a strong Brighton side, managed by Micky Adams, with the game being decided on penalties. That Sussex Senior Cup Final was watched at Eastbourne Borough's ground by 1355 punters. This evening's Albion side is their u23 outfit who will still be strong opponents.

Look at the travelling all those years ago. Stamford and Wisbech would have been the furthest away - around 175 miles. Treks to Spalding, Witney and Corby would have entailed similar mileage. Going to those places meant using the whole day. And the GUT FEELING Cont P18

17

GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart CONT FROM P17 PARTY POOPED Romford. BetVictor North basement boys. Once a major semi-pro name, things not so good in recent years. Playing in front of 100 or so spectators. And bought out recently by Glenn Tamplin who had bankrolled Billericay for several seasons. Credit to Tamplin, he left Billericay in far better nick than Mark Gardiner left Hastings Town 20 odd years ago. And didn't he splash the cash last week, signing 15 players in a day, replacing the backroom staff and

Seen it all before. Good times to roll at Romford? installing himself as manager. And it all went swimmingly well till Coggeshall turned up on Saturday at Romford where an excellent gate of 524 saw Romford's party pooped as Coggeshall didn't read the script and won 3-2. Romford remain bottom, but let's see how they go.

VAR Give it time. Give it time. We finally have it and are still getting used to it. BBC did a survey around other countries that have used video tech longer than we have and without exception needed time to let it all bed in. We are no different in that respect. We will get it right. One excellent use of VAR is telling spectators what is behind the various decisions.

crucially wrong decision which surely helped Lewes on their way to a 2-1 win but at least the 3 game suspension was lifted. The same with Charlie Horlock's red card at Leiston in that epic FA Cup tie last season. Rescinded because luckily there was a camera there.

We won't see the all encompassing video presence at our level but there is more and more video around of games at step 4. 20 years ago if I'd been out in the Philippines where I am now, I'd have eventually found out last Tuesday's excellent result at Whitehawk on the internet in an internet cafe maybe. 20 years on, I was seeing Davide Rodari's goals at Whitehawk a matter of hours later on my phone (Youtube) having kept up with the game live on Twitter and Footballwebpages 8000 miles away. Fantastic eh? And while we won't get VAR officials scrutinising our games at step 4, video coverage - if available - can still play a part. Ollie Rowe's red card against Lewes two seasons ago. Rescinded after the video was sent to the league. Yes, damage done, played a man short for an hour, 18

VAR is here to stay. Give it time.

BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION FC U23 PLAYER PROFILES Tom McGill Thomas McGill progressed through the club's youth ranks to make up part of Simon Rusk's under-23 squad for the 2018/19 campaign. The goalkeeper made over 30 appearances for Albion's under-18s in the Premier League South, and made a loan move to Greenwich Borough during his first season as an under-23 squad member.McGill made his Premier League 2 Division 1 debut against Manchester City at the Academy Stadium, making a number of important stops and keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 victory.

Hugo Keto Hugo Keto completed a move to Brighton & Hove Albion from Arsenal in July 2018, signing on a two-year contract. Keto arrived at Arsenal from Finnish side HJK Helsinki in 2014, and went into the Gunners’ under-18 squad. Known for being an athletic shot-stopper, his finest moment with the Gunners came in the 2015/16 FA Youth Cup quarter-final against Coventry City, where he made a hat-trick of fine saves to secure a penalty shoot-out victory. The goalkeeper has also represented Finland at youth-team level, and has three caps for the under-21s.

Warren O’Hora Warren O'Hora signed for Brighton & Hove Albion from Bohemians in January 2018, after progressing through the club’s academy to make 11 appearances in Ireland’s top flight. The defender made his Premier League 2 debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux, towards the end of Albion’s play-off winning season to the top flight of under-23 football. O’Hora made 15 league appearances during the 2018/19 season, helping Simon Rusk’s team finish third in the division after providing Everton with competition for the league title. He also made his Checkatrade Trophy debut in Albion’s 3-2 victory against MK Dons at Stadium MK.

Kipras Kazukolovas Kipras Kazukolovas moved from Lithuania to join Albion in July 2017, but after featuring three times in the 2017/18 campaign, the defender suffered a long-term injury. Following a year and a half on the sidelines, Kazukolovas returned to play the final four matches of Albion’s 2018/19 Premier League South season — all of which the Seagulls won. Kazukolovas spent pre-season with Albion’s under-23s ahead of the 2019/20 Premier League 2 season, as the defender looks to cement his place in the team.

Lewis Freestone Lewis Freestone signed for Albion in July 2019 after the defender was released by Peterborough United. The centre-back made his senior debut for Posh in 2017 and

20

went on to make a further seven league appearances, before spending the 2018/19 campaign on loan at Nuneaton Borough and Bedford Town. Freestone made his debut for Albion’s under-23s against Arsenal in the PL2 and was given his first start in the 2-0 Leasing.com Trophy win over AFC Wimbledon at Kingsmeadow.

Archie Davies Archie Davies progressed out of Albion’s under-18 side into Simon Rusk’s under-23 squad for the start of the 2017/18 season. The midfielder made a handful of appearances in the Premier League 2 Division 2, while also spending time out on loan with Whitehawk. Davies made his first appearance in the Premier League 2 Division 1 in Albion's 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur at the Lamex Stadium. A further 18 appearances followed during the 2018/19 season, as Davies helped the team finish third in their debut season at top-flight level.

Alex Cochrane After making numerous appearances for Albion's under18s, Alex Cochrane stepped up into Simon Rusk's under23 side for the 2018/19 season. Cochrane made his Premier League 2 Division 1 debut against Liverpool, before making a further 16 league appearances against the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City. The left-back also featured in the Checkatrade Trophy, playing 90 minutes in Albion’s narrow 2-1 defeat to Luton Town at Kenilworth Road.

Haydon Roberts After joining the Seagulls in October 2015, Haydon Roberts worked his way through the club’s youth ranks to become a prominent figure Albion’s under-18s. The defender, who can also play in central midfield, was handed his Premier League 2 debut for Albion’s under23s in August 2018, and Roberts found the back of the net in a stunning 5-0 win against Manchester City. Roberts went on to make nine PL2 appearances for Albion’s under-23s during the 2019/20 campaign, and headed his second goal of the season in a 1-1 draw at Liverpool in January 2019.

Jordan Davies Jordan Davies joined the Seagulls from Wrexham in January 2017 on undisclosed terms. The winger enjoyed a loan spell at Bangor City at the start of the 2016/17 season, making 14 appearances for the Welsh Premier League side and scoring one goal. Davies returned to Wrexham before moving to England, and after joining up with Simon Rusk's under-23 squad, the Welshman scored his first goal in the Premier League 2 Division 2 against Middlesbrough at the Amex Stadium. After helping the Seagulls reach the top flight of under-23 football, Davies featured 15 times in the PL2 and played in all three Checkatrade Trophy matches, scoring in the second game against Peterborough United.

Simon Rusk U23s Coach

Peter Gwargis Peter Gwargis signed for the Seagulls from Swedish second-tier side Jonkopings Sodra IF in August 2018. The youngster signed a three-year deal at the club, ahead of the 2018/19 Premier League 2 Division 1 season. After playing for IFK Oxnehaga at the beginning of his career, Gwargis moved to Husqvarna FF and made his first appearance for the Swedish third-tier club in 2017. Gwargis scored his first senior goal against FC Rosengard in September that year, which triggered a consistent run in the team, as he ended the campaign with 19 league appearances. The Swede signed for Jonkopings Sodra IF in the second division before the end of the year, and made his debut for the club against Landskrona in April 2018. Gwargis fired three goals and claimed three assists in 17 appearances, as he quickly established himself as a regular in the starting line-up. After signing for the Seagulls, Gwargis made six appearances in the Premier League 2 Division 1 during the 2018/19 season, while also featuring once in the Checkatrade Trophy. The midfielder has also featured for his country at international level - claiming caps for Sweden’s under-16s and under19s

Simon Rusk was appointed Albion's under-23 coach in March 2015, after stepping up from his role as the club's under-18s coach. Rusk led the Seagulls to an eighth-placed finish in the 2016/17 Premier League 2 Division 2 campaign, and has stepped in as first-team coach for Chris Hughton's senior squad on multiple occasions. Rusk enjoyed a playing career prior to coaching, as he made over 140 appearanced for Boston United, before moving on to York City and Crawley Town towards the end of his career.

Shannon Ruth U23s Assistant Coach

Ryan Longman Ryan Longman joined Albion’s academy in September 2012, and has since worked his way through various age groups to join up with the club’s under-23s ahead of the 2019/20 campaign. The winger’s breakthrough season for Albion’s under-18s came during the 2017/18 campaign, when he made 16 appearances in the Premier League South and scored four goals. Another busy season for Albion’s under-18s followed, but Longman also featured nine times for the under-23s, scoring his first goal on the final day of the season against Chelsea.

Danny Cashman Danny Cashman joined Albion’s academy in September 2012, and after working his way through the youth ranks, the forward became a regular starter for the club’s under18s. Cashman often wore the captain’s armband for Albion’s under-18s, as he made more than 40 league appearances across three seasons, while also coming off the bench against MK Dons in the Checkatrade Trophy for Albion’s under-23s. The forward featured 17 times for Albion’s under-18s during the 2018/19 Premier League South campaign, but perhaps his most eye-catching moment of the season was his winning goal for Albion’s under-23s at Manchester City in February 2019.

Shannon Ruth was appointed as Albion’s under-23 assistant coach in January 2018, following a spell as lead academy goalkeeping coach - a role he still oversees. After playing football at non-league level in the Conference, Ruth began coaching with Chelsea at the age of 18, as he worked with the under-9 to under12 goalkeepers at the club. Head of goalkeeping roles at Aldershot and Reading followed - four years with the Royals - before joining Albion, initially as a goalkeeping coach before stepping up to be Simon Rusk’s assistant.

HASTINGS UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB POLICIES

Customer Charter Full details of our Customer Charter are available at our website: www.hastingsunited.com. These include our policy on ticket and pricing, abandoned matches and our involvement in the Hastings Community.

Health & Safety Hastings United Football Club takes seriously your health and safety during your visit to the Pilot Field.

The Club Believes Customer Care starts on the inside, with a good team of staff and work ethic. Most of our staff are volunteers but The Club expect our staff to always do their best.

Please note that the officers and stewards of Hastings United Football Club will enforce Ground Regulations. A copy of these Regulations is posted at the entrance to each turnstile and within the ground on the wall next to the food bar.

Our staff should remain courteous even in difficult situations. The Club and its staff know they are offering a service and that they would like every customer to return.

Please note that the following are offences under the Football (Offences) Act 1991, as amended: the throwing of any object within the ground without lawful authority or excuse, the chanting of anything of an indecent or racist nature: the entry onto the playing area or any adjacent area to which spectators are not generally admitted without lawful authority or excuse.

We believe that people come first when offering a service.

Under the Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol etc.) Act 1985, the following are offences for which a person can be arrested by a police officer: attempting to enter the ground or being inside the ground whilst drunk: being in possession of any intoxicating liquor, or bottle, can or other portable container which could cause damage or personal injury when entering the ground.

We expect our staff to be friendly and helpful and to know their job or be able to call upon someone who is able to respond to the needs of our customers. We expect our staff to give their full attention to a customer in any situation that arises.

In Addition We expect our staff and volunteers to care about their job as this will ensure they care about our customers. We expect our staff and volunteers to treat every customer as they would like to be treated themselves. We in return expect our customers to treat our volunteers and staff with respect and The Club will not tolerate any physical or verbal abused aimed at them.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS HISTORY

Although formed within months of each other, the two clubs have never met in league action as it was always intended that the Albion should be a professional club and have only played in the Southern and the Football Leagues. Nevertheless, we have been drawn together in competition ties on eleven previous occasions – ten times in the Sussex Senior Cup - and have played a number of friendly matches: The first recorded encounter taking place on Saturday, 13th December, 1924 when, despite also having a home Division 3 (South) fixture against Swansea Town, Albion sent a side containing eight first team players to meet Hastings & St. Leonards in the semi-final of the Hastings Charity Cup. The Seagulls romped to a 9-1 victory with goals from Bob Dennison (3), Ted Green (2), Fred Hoyland (2), Jack Smith and Reg Wilkinson, our lone reply coming from Ernie Philcox; the match attracting a crowd of 1,828 with £32.43 being raised for distribution between the two local hospitals after both clubs declined expenses and their share of the gate. The next competitive meeting took place under unusual circumstances when Brighton Secretary Albert Underwood forgot to seek exemption from the qualifying rounds of the F.A. Challenge Cup so that on Saturday, 29th October, 1932 it was the full Albion first team that arrived for a third qualifying round tie in which they romped to a 9-0 victory thanks to a Bobby Farrell hat-trick and a brace apiece from Arthur Attwood, Tommy Smith and Alf Thompson in a tie which attracted a crowd of 7,723. Although several war-time friendly matches were played between the clubs, the next competitive fixture was during season 1945/46 when, due to the continuing war in the Far East, the Football League was again run on an improvised basis with Albion fielding a side described as “the Juniors” in the emergency Sussex County League and the Sussex Senior Cup. Thereafter, as a professional club Brighton were not invited to participate in the Sussex Senior Cup again until 1975, when the distinction between amateur and professional status was abolished, and by the time of our next meeting we had become Hastings Town and were playing on The Firs, however, the upper pitch was not fit to accommodate the second round meeting in the Senior Cup on Saturday, 12th January, 1980 and the match was transfer here to the Pilot Field where Brighton won 2-0. When we next met, again at the same stage of the competition

42

on Saturday, 29th October, 1983 the tie was played on The Firs but with no better result for us as the Albion won 3-1 with England Youth International Martin Lambert hitting a hat-trick, Derrick Smith registering our late lone reply. By season 1986/87 we had moved back to the Pilot Field, however, when we were drawn together at the Quarter-Final stage it was at the Goldstone when we drew 1-1 but a week later a crowd of 656 saw another 1-1 draw, Malcolm Streeter scoring our goal and Welsh International Dean Saunders netting for the Albion; however, extra-time saw Brighton go on to win 4-1 with another goal from Saunders and a brace from David Gipp. Five years later at the third round stage we managed a goal less draw at the Goldstone and a second draw here when we drew 2-2 after extra time. Eight days later Brighton shaded the second replay winning in extra time by the odd goal of five, Phil Henderson and Dean Kewley scored for us while the Brighton marksmen were Mark Barham, Mark Gall and Jamie Williams. During the rest of that decade Brighton came here on four occasions for friendly matches, however, on Bank Holiday Monday, 1st May, 2000 this time in the Final of the Sussex Senior Cup at Eastbourne Borough’s ground where a crowd of 1,355 shall us draw 1-1, Matt Ball scoring first for us with Kevin Hemsley getting a late equaliser; extra time produced no more goals and Albion went onto lift the trophy after winning the penalty shoot-out 4-3. On Tuesday, 19th November, 2002 our away Sussex Senior Cup second round tie was played at Woodside Road, Worthing where Cameroon trialist Roger Pandong score the only goal for the Albion.
