The advent calendars have started to open, the the 90th minute half an inch lower and a rocket decorations are up, the Xmas lists are written header goes in and we win the game 3-2! It was and guess what? WE ARE STILL UNBEATEN! great spending time with the supporters out there and once again the noise on the terraces It’s been a little while since we’ve been in league was great! That continued Tuesday as Chris’ action here at the Pilot Field and it feels great to team dug deep and delivered a result that many be back here to really kick off this festive month probably thought this neat passing team as we welcome Chichester City who last week- couldn’t deliver. Elphick and Stoney were rocks end did Sussex proud in FA Cup 2nd Round at the back and we played them at their own action. Whilst the result didn’t go their way, their game and deservedly walked away with 3 run was magical, and I would like to applaud points. Our supporters again were amazing and them for it. Welcome today to their staff, players even received great compliments from the and management team. Whitstable Town committee. Plaudits don’t stop there, as I need to really put the praise on the staff, volunteers and directors for working together with 24 hours notice to get the game on against East Grinstead in the Velocity Sports Trophy. We all know what happened that night (RECORD BREAKERS!) and it just shows that match was meant to happen, the energy around the place is great and it’s starting with you guys on the terraces. If I can feel it, I am sure our players and management can.

We have one more game at home before Christmas following this, as we welcome Herne Bay to the Pilot Field for some Friday night football! Imagine if we crept closer to the magic 1000 people in the ground! Festive mince pies for all! TODAY, WE BANG THE DRUM, WE SING OUR HEARTS OUT AND GIVE OUR ALL ON AND OFF THE PITCH!!! #COYU

Billy Guernsey was an interesting trip, personally I don’t think we played amazingly well and still in Billy Wood HUFC Chief Executive Officer

MANAGER’S NOTES Good afternoon everyone. A warm welcome to the Chichester City board members, staff and players to the Pilot Field today ..... from all at HUFC we wish you a safe journey to and from our town. Delighted to come away from Tuesday evenings away trip to Whitstable Town with another win ..... in tough conditions and on a pitch more suited to growing crops we found a way to win and in the end could and should have scored 5+ ..... That now makes us unbeaten, including last season, a total of 20 league games .... a stat made all the more impressive by the fact we still have so much room for improvement in our game ..... there will be zero complacency and zero let-up from this group - we will keep aiming to improve and move in an upward direction. Today against Chichester City we are determined to maintain our 100% winning record at home ...... today will no doubt be tough and Chichester under the guidance of good friend Darin ‘Dabba’ Kilpatrick will no doubt be as aggressive and full of running as ever ..... HOWEVER, we fully appreciate the difficulty of the challenge posed and know we need to improve on our previous performance to ensure we pickup another three points. Lastly ..... and as always I look forward to seeing and hearing our 12th man rock the Pilot Field ..... you gave Whitstable Town’s ‘support’ a lesson in their own back yard Tuesday night .... you were at your brilliant noisy best!! WE GO AGAIN .... COYU’s!

PREVIOUS MEETINGS vs CHICHESTER CITY Our first meeting with Chichester took place almost a century ago in the first season of the then one division Sussex County League when we were still Hastings Rock-A-Nore on Saturday, 11th September, 1920; Chichester coming to play on the first pitch marked out on this site. A crowd of one thousand saw us loose 1-2, our goal scored by Len Chambers. Five months later we travelled to West Sussex where we lost the return 1-3. Thereafter we met in that League twice a season until we departed to the Southern Amateur League in 1927 that season we had two totally contrasting results on 29th January we lost 5-6 at Chichester but just five weeks later recorded our second highest ever score winning 14-1 here, Alan Wisden leading the scoring with five goals. Thereafter our only meetings were at the un-regionalised Quarter-Final stage of the Sussex Senior Cup in both 1928 and 1931. There was then an almost thirty year gap until the next meeting which took place on Saturday, 19th November, 1960 when we as Hastings & St Leonards, playing in Division Two of the County League, were thrashed 1-10 away to a City side riding high in the top division at the second round stage in the Sussex Senior Cup. League meetings resumed in season 1980/81 and in three consecutive seasons we never lost to Chichester City home or away, winning on four occasions, the last two being 8-0 victories. In 2001/02 we met here in the first qualifying round of the F.A. Cup a tie we won 3-0 and then two years ago we visited Chichester for a pre-season friendly which we won 4-2. Earlier this season there was an away meeting in the League’s Velocity Trophy competition, at the group stage, when we won:Saturday 3 September 2019

A ROOKS RETURN Billy Medlock back at the Pan

LEAGUE NEWS From: Ian Townsend

OYSTERBOYS BORROW NATIONAL LEAGUE WINGER Dover man returns to the Belmont Whitstable Town have confirmed that Dover Athletic winger Marshall Wratten has returned to the club on loan until the end of the season. Marshall made six appearances for the club in September and October before being recalled, but made his second debut from the bench in the Oysterboys 2-0 win at Faversham Town on Saturday November 30. Last season he made ten appearances, including two starts, whilst on a similar loan with Premier Division club Margate, his starts coming in back-to-back victories over Kingstonian and Wingate & Finchley.

Lewes have announced the return to the club - and to the game - of their promotionwinning striker Billy Medlock. Billy hit eighteen goals as the Rooks fought with Carshalton Athletic for the 2017-18 South Division title, a season that ended with the Robins holding the silverware but both clubs are in the Premier Division. He then left the club - and football - last season for personal reasons after eight matches and two goals, but now he's back. As well as the Rooks, Billy has also turned out for Phoenix Sports, Dorking Wanderers, Burgess Hill Town, Eastbourne Borough, and Hastings United - for whom he scored twenty-eight goals in 2015-16. 14

VCD SIGN RAHEEM STERLING-PARKER Robins forward heads South East VCD Athletic have confirmed the signing of Carshalton Athletic forward Raheem SterlingParker. Raheem, who earlier in his career played for Harrow Borough and Enfield Town, joined the Robins in the summer of 2017 after impressing manager Peter Adeniyi by scoring two goals against his side for Chipstead. They were just two of sixteen goals he scored that season for the Chips, and he was soon into his stride for the Robins, getting thirteen as they won promotion to the Premier Division during his first season at the club, but his time since has been rather injury hit, and he'll now hope to hit the heights once more in his new role at Oakwood. He's played only two matches for the Robins so far this season, and two on loan at Chipstead.

GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart

Footballwebpages has it's occasional hiccups. I knew Chichester had been holding Tranmere for an hour or so until ....

A light hearted – and on many occasions, anything but light hearted, look at life here in what is now known as the BetVictor Isthmian League's South Eastern Division. My rants and raves are not connected with the club in any way.

WHITSTABUBBLE Ohhhh what a good result on Tuesday on the far reaches of the Kent coast. Would love to have gone but work interfered, programme notes had to be completed and I'd have had to exceed a speed limit or two to make the game. Four points from those last two games was a decent return. 2-2 at Guernsey given their revival in form this season was good and getting three points on Tuesday from one of our games in hand was a perfect result. Ex United favourite Harry Stannard threatened to ruin the evening with his equalising goal for Whitstable but Gary Elphick soon restored United's lead with his second wrapping it all up.

Tom Climpson appears to be doing pretty well across the pond. Be good to see him in a United shirt again...... 16

GREAT TO BE BACK Yea right it is. Just over a week ago I flew out of Manila and its legendary traffic jams – you're classified as an advanced driver there if you change from first to second gear – I flew out from around 31 degrees into Heathrow's wet and dark 10 degrees 14 and a half hours later. All I can say to that is I'm glad to be going back out that way late January. Any excuse to get away from an English winter. Following the Whitehawk Trophy replay was interesting. I logged into Footballwebpages and Twitter - and a regular supply of San Miguel kept me going till 6 am when I staggered back to the hotel celebrating a fine win with the boys coming back from a goal down to win 2-1. Nothing has been won this season, there isn't much to celebrate in December, the big prizes come much later into the season. But what Chris & Co have achieved is hugely credit worthy and now that most of the knock out football distractions are behind us, we can concentrate on that big prize..

8? EIGHT? Really? Eight goals in one game? Well, that was really something eh? Davide Rodari has been exceptional this season without playing a lot of first team football. Ben Pope started off on fire, the form of Messrs Azeez and Ajakaiye plus you can only put eleven out there has seen Davide warming the bench far longer than he must have liked. Must have been so frustrating given the way he came back last season from a serious injury but he has bided his time, got first team time under his belt mainly in Velocity Trophy fixtures and coming off the bench in league games and getting a rare start in the league match at Whitstable last Tuesday. And that Velocity Trophy landslide here against East Grinstead. 12-3 to United with Davide grabbing 8 of them. Bizzare. No other way to describe United vs East Grinstead. Last season we hammered them 9-2 in a league cup game and a few weeks ago put twelve past them - again in the league cup. Yet, in three league fixtures in between those two high scoring games, these massacres, these demolition jobs, United have picked up one lousy point. 2-3 here last season, 1-2 at East Grinstead and then a 0-0 stalemate there early this season. I think we would all settle for that classic scrappy 1-0 next time East Grinstead visit The Pilot Field. But well done Davide.

WELL DONE CHI So how will Chichester City adjust to their return to bread and butter Isthmian SE football? Good FA Cup runs can be great fun but so often there is a price to be paid as United have found out when we had good runs. Ist Round Proper in 2002/03 and 3rd Round Proper in 2012/13. Great fun, the club made money and in each season were relegated. Chichester have made a thoroughly decent start to love at step 4 and today's game looks an interesting one given our home record and their away tally – 12 games between us and no defeats. The best home record against the best away. Chichester did tremendously well to get through to that game at Tranmere Rovers last weekend, a little bit of good fortune along the way with the bye following Bury's demise but they still had to do plenty to get as far as they did and did totally the right thing by making a donation to the fund set up to help Bury get playing football again.

Why stick to football when The Rugby Paper can offer up a gem like this which hails back to the days of amateur club rugby. Bristol will deal with new signings rather differently in today's Pro era.....

Let's see how they do.

The first Chichester Football Club was formed in 1873 and added the title 'City' to its name in 1948. The club’s original home was Priory Park but it relocated to Oaklands Park in the early fifties. The club was represented at the inaugural meeting of the Sussex County FA in 1882 and featured in the first ever Sussex Senior Cup competition in the same year losing 5-0 to Storrington. In 1896 Chichester became members of the newly formed West Sussex League and remained there until they joined the Sussex County League in 1920. The first major honour was achieved in 1926 when they won the Sussex Senior Cup but inter-war success was limited. In 1960 Chichester clinched their first Sussex County League title and then retained it the following season, shared the Sussex RUR Cup with Brighton & Hove Albion after a 2-2 draw and reached the first round proper of the FA Cup, only to lose 11-0 to Bristol City. Chichester beat Eastbourne in the RUR Cup in 1964 and recaptured the league title in 1968. In the 1970s Chichester’s fortunes were 20

mixed; the high point being another league championship in 1973 and a good run in the FA Amateur Cup. At the end of the decade, City faced relegation for the first time. However, the appointment of ex-Plymouth and Portsmouth player, Richie Reynolds, as manager sparked an amazing revival which saw City claw their way to safety. The following season was one of City’s best ever as Reynolds masterminded a league championship win. The club was relegated though in 1983 after a dismal season. Promotion and Division Two Cup success followed in 1985 but they returned to the Second Division for the 1987-88 campaign winning the Division Two Challenge Cup again in 1988. Steve White took over as manager in 1990 and the side enjoyed another promotion campaign alongside Division Two Challenge Cup success. The club struggled for several seasons in the County League top flight before again being relegated to Division Two in 1994. In 1997, City returned to the top flight after finishing runners-up. Permission was finally granted for floodlights at Oaklands Park and they remained in the top flight of the Sussex County League in one guise or another for over twenty years. Following a millennium merger with Portfield FC the club became known as Chichester City United FC and in 2004 Adie Girdler and his assistant Gary Brockway led Chichester to their first

CHICHESTER CITY FC - HISTORY

Chi players celebrate winning the Sussex RUR Cup in 2018 Sussex County League title since 1980. The club also won the Brighton Charity Cup in 2005 and 2006 and the RUR Cup for a third time in 2007. At the start of the 2009-2010 season, following discussions with Chichester District Council, it was agreed to revert back to the name of Chichester City FC as this more clearly reflected the club and the city. The club faced challenges after this, both on and off the pitch, for a number of years. However, the management team of Miles Rutherford, Graeme Gee and first team coach Danny Potter has transformed things at Chi in all sorts of ways. A top five finish in the Southern Combination Football League premier division in 201516 was followed by a third place spot in 2016-17, a six month unbeaten run in the league and a record equaling 4th round appearance in the FA Vase. Chichester went one round better in the Vase the following season, losing 1-0 to 1874 Northwich in the last minute of the game.

Chi won the RUR Cup in the 2017-18 season, beating local rivals Pagham 4-0 in the final at Culver Road, and gained promotion to Step 4 of the non-league football pyramid for the first time ever in the club’s history after clinching the SCFL premier division title in 2018-19. Darin Killpartrick joined the coaching staff at Chichester in the summer of 2019 and an exceptional start to life in the Isthmian League was complemented by an extraordinary FA Cup adventure as City progressed through six rounds of qualifying to make it to the first round proper of the competition – a run in which Chichester beat three Step 3 sides. And in a unique FA Cup first round draw Chichester, the lowest ranked team left in the competition, were given the bye into the second round. Chi exited the illustrious competition on December 1, following a 5-1 defeat to Tranmere Rovers in front of a 4,370 crowd. 21

YESTERDAY ONCE MORE James Humphreys - The former U’s ‘Mr Big’? Question: what links the following items: Hastings United; the 1996 BBC drama Our Friends in the North; large-scale corruption in the Metropolitan Police force and the Oz obscenity trial of 1971? Answer: Mr James Humphreys. It was understandable that Hastings United should have received Jim Humphreys so cordially in the summer of 1965. He seemed a personable, charming chap. Crucially, he had a viable plan for reviving the club’s fortunes: dog racing. He planned to use the Pilot Field’s perimeter space, vacated by the defunct speedway team, for a dog track. The club were hard-up. Humphreys seemed to be a successful businessman with surplus cash, having an impressive spread at nearby Northiam. He was experienced in the gambling business. According to those closely connected with the club, nothing was known about the shadier aspects of his life when he became a director in 1965. Following Humphreys’ investment, the club signed former Spurs and England international, Bobby Smith and Welsh Under-23 striker, Jim Ryan. A twelve-match unbeaten run followed, containing a profusion of crushing victories. Promotion seemed assured. In January 1966, Humphreys became the club chairman. The team began to falter, though, not helped by the appointment of a general manager above player/manager Sid Bishop. Hastings won just eight of their final twenty Southern League games, a lapse in form that caused them to miss promotion by three points, despite scoring over one hundred league goals. Sid Bishop resigned, joining Guildford City as a player, remarking darkly: ‘The wrong type of people were running the club at Hastings. I wasn’t at all happy there.’ While there was growing unease about James Humphreys’ background, his shady dealings were not fully exposed until concerted investigations revealed the breadth of corruption within the Metropolitan Police force. By then Humphreys had resigned as chairman, leaving the club in 1968, after realising his dog racing objective would not be achieved in Hastings. The 1996, BBC TV serial Our Friends in the North dramatised these sordid events of the late 60s and early 70s, with Malcolm McDowell playing pornographer, Bennie Barratt, a character allegedly based upon James Humphreys, supposedly the ‘Mr Big’ in Soho during these times. Humphreys considered the mood of the drama to be ‘very accurate’. Coincidentally, in 1971, the editors of the ‘hippie’ magazine, Oz, were prosecuted under the obscene publication laws for producing a ‘School Kids issue’, featuring an unusually libidinous Rupert Bear. The trial collapsed when it was revealed that the police were allowing Soho merchants to sell more lurid material. Eventually, Humphreys turned ‘grass’ in order to minimise a sentence for GBH, providing detailed evidence of institutional corruption within the ‘Met’. New commissioner, Robert Mark observed dryly: ‘a good police force is one that catches more crooks than it employs’, adding: ‘the real fear of pornographers was not of the courts but of harassment, either by strong-armed men seeking protection money or by the police doing, in effect, the same thing’

Health & Safety Hastings United Football Club takes seriously your health and safety during your visit to the Pilot Field.

The Club Believes Customer Care starts on the inside, with a good team of staff and work ethic. Most of our staff are volunteers but The Club expect our staff to always do their best.

Please note that the officers and stewards of Hastings United Football Club will enforce Ground Regulations. A copy of these Regulations is posted at the entrance to each turnstile and within the ground on the wall next to the food bar.

Our staff should remain courteous even in difficult situations. The Club and its staff know they are offering a service and that they would like every customer to return.

Please note that the following are offences under the Football (Offences) Act 1991, as amended: the throwing of any object within the ground without lawful authority or excuse, the chanting of anything of an indecent or racist nature: the entry onto the playing area or any adjacent area to which spectators are not generally admitted without lawful authority or excuse.

We believe that people come first when offering a service.

Under the Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol etc.) Act 1985, the following are offences for which a person can be arrested by a police officer: attempting to enter the ground or being inside the ground whilst drunk: being in possession of any intoxicating liquor, or bottle, can or other portable container which could cause damage or personal injury when entering the ground.

We expect our staff to be friendly and helpful and to know their job or be able to call upon someone who is able to respond to the needs of our customers. We expect our staff to give their full attention to a customer in any situation that arises.

In Addition We expect our staff and volunteers to care about their job as this will ensure they care about our customers. We expect our staff and volunteers to treat every customer as they would like to be treated themselves. We in return expect our customers to treat our volunteers and staff with respect and The Club will not tolerate any physical or verbal abused aimed at them.

HUFC vs EAST GRINSTEAD TOWN - MAN OF THE MATCH -DAVIDE RODARI Davide Rodari was awarded ‘Man Of The Match’ by Wealden Ambulance Services. Davide was presented with his award by three supporters, George, Rob and Darryl.

HASTINGS UNITED 12 EAST GRINSTEAD TOWN 3 “RODARI EXTERMINATES THE WASPS” Hastings United put East Grinstead to the sword in clinical manner last Tuesday night. Racking up their biggest winning score in the post-war era with striker Davide Rodari also writing himself into the record books as joint highest scorer in a game. An incredible 8-goal tally that was last achieved by a player called Adfield on 26th September 1931 for the then Hastings and St Leonards.

Davide Rodari scored 8 goals

Just 24 hours earlier, the club had accepted a switch of fixture from East Grinstead’s waterlogged stadium and found themselves racing against clock and weather as club staff battled all day to get the game on. They were to be rewarded with one of the most astonishing displays and a night that few of the 181 strong crowd will forget. 40

ON THIS DAY A look back at some of the matches played in past seasons on: Saturday, 7th December.

1957 Wolves extended their lead at the top of Division One to four points after winning 2-1 at third placed Preston while second placed W.B.A. were held 1-1 at home by Blackpool. Manchester United missed the chance to take over third place as they could only draw 3-3 at Birmingham City. There was a rare type of hat trick as Maine Road as Manchester City beat Everton 6-2 all three of Ken Barnes goals being scored from the penalty spot. Peter Harris also registered three but with only one from the penalty spot as Portsmouth beat Luton Town 5-0. In Division Two leaders Liverpool dropped a point after being held 1-1 at home by West Ham United, Billy Liddell netting for the home side while John Dicks replied, however, the point was enough to extend their advantage as Blackburn Rovers lost 1-5 at lowly Leyton Orient. On a day of high scoring games Cardiff City topped the individual list netting seven without reply by Barnsley, Cliff Nugent scoring a hat trick. In the second round of the F.A. Cup Brighton drew 1-1 at Norwich City, Dennis Foreman having put the Seagulls ahead only for Johnny Gavin to rescue the home side.

We, then Hastings & St.Leonards, entertained Old Varndeanians on the top ground in the first round of the Sussex Senior Cup but lost 0-3, having already lost to them twice in Division Two of the Sussex County League and also gone out of the F.A. Amateur Cup in a second replay after twice holding them to draws.

1985 There was no change at the top of the then Canon League Division One as leaders Manchester United defeated Ipswich Town 1-0 while second placed Liverpool beat Aston Villa 3-0 and west Ham United who won 1-0 at Q.P.R. Chelsea held on to fourth place on goal difference after they drew 1-1 at Coventry City. The top two in Division Two also both won leaders Portsmouth gaining a 3-1 success at Sunderland and second placed Charlton Athletic beating Sheffield United – the side immediately below them – 2-0, the Blades dropping a place as Norwich City beat Blackburn Rovers 3-0. There were two major upsets in the second round of the F.A. Cup as non-league Altrincham won 2-1 at former Cup holders Blackpool while fellow non-leaguers Frickley Athletic won 1-0 at Hartlepool United. Two more sides achieved draws Slough Town finishing 2-2 at (Leyton) Orient while Runcorn held Wigan Athletic 1-1. More locally Bognor Regis Town lost 1-6 at Gillingham while Maidstone United went out 0-3 at Plymouth Argyle.

We, then still Hastings Town, entertained Burgess Hill Town in the Southern Division of the Southern League and won 1-0 with a goal from Peter Heritage before a crowd of 270.

2013 Liverpool reduced inactive leaders Arsenal’s advantage at the top of the Barclays F.A. Premiership to four points when they beat West Ham United 4-1 to go above Chelsea on goal difference after the West Londoners lost 2-3 at Stoke City and Manchester City could only manage a 1-1 draw at Southampton. Npower Championship leaders Q.P.R. dropped a place after being held 0-0 by Blackburn Rovers allowing Burnley to go top following their 1-0 defeat of basement side Barnsley. Mid-table Brighton beat former second placed side Leicester City 3-1 with goals from Ashley Barnes (2) and Craig Conway; Andy King scoring the Foxes late consolation goal. It was Budweiser F.A. Cup second round weekend where two Conference sides progressed after beating League opposition: Grimsby Town defeating Northampton Town 2-0 while Kidderminster Harriers saw\ off Newport County 4-2. Closer to us Crawley Town were held 0-0 at Bristol Rovers while Dover Athletic lost 0-1 at M.K. Dons.

We entertained Three Bridges in the Division One (South) of the Ryman Isthmian League and won 1-0 with a goal from Kenny Pogue before a crowd of 374.
