FROM THE BOARDROOM WELCOME

Billy Wood

Happy New Year!!! went from 14 points adrift at the bottom, Xmas 2018, to surviving on the last day of the season with an 85th minute winner. The end of the 2020 season I would like to be celebrating again, not survival but the promotion of this amazing football club. I know Aggy and the It was incredibly gutting having such a last team will do all they can to give us such a minute postponement against Herne Bay, we all magical 2020. worked tirelessly to get that game on to no avail. I would like to thank Trev, Rob, Gary, Wayne, First things first, today and the challenge of East Dicko and everyone else who put in the time Grinstead Town. Both clubs will be looking to start 2020 with a bang, so we will need to be across that day to try and get the game on. at our best to deliver, in an attempt to keep us That game was set to be our fundraiser for Lori, at the top of the table. as a club we couldn’t let the family down because of the weather and therefore Let’s start 2020 as loud as we finished 2019, anticipated what we believed this amazing let’s be proud to be Hastings United! family club would have raised and purchased presents for the family. Billy 2019 was personally a strange year for me, leaving one club and joining my home town club, Billy Wood HUFC Chief Executive Officer but one with lots of highs! Eastbourne United I am sure we have all stuffed our faces, seen enough of the family and watched some terrible Christmas TV Specials, what better way to finish the festive period and start 2020 than football at home, The Pilot Field!

PREVIOUS MEETINGS WITH EAST GRINSTEAD TOWN FC Our first scheduled meeting with East Grinstead was arranged for Saturday, 20th November, 1920 in the then one division Sussex County League but the Tigers were unable to raise a side to travel here to play our predecessors, Rock-A-Nore F.C. and they were awarded the points: They travelled to East Grinstead for the return league game on Saturday, 9th April, 1921 when the match ended as a goal less draw. By the start of the following season we had become Hastings & St. Leonards F.C. and we entertained East Grinstead in our first home league match of the campaign which was not until Saturday, 8th October, 1921 when, before a crowd of nearly one thousand on the upper pitch, we won 4-0 with goals from Swaine (2), Barrett and Chambers. We completed the ‘double’ away on Saturday, 1st April, 1922 when we won 3-2 with goals from Traylen (2) and Swaine. East Grinstead withdrew from the County League for two seasons but we still managed one meeting in an F.A. Cup preliminary round tie in 1923/24 when we won 3-1 away before a crowd of over two thousand. Back for season 1924/25 we again did the double over East Grinstead winning 9-1 at home and 7-1 away. It was a similar picture the following season when we won 8-0 home and 4-3 away. Thereafter we departed to play in the Southern Amateur League and although there were a number of cup meetings in between, our next league meeting was in the East Division of the War Emergency League of season 1939/40 in which we drew 2-2 away but won 2-1 here in the home match on our way to winning the division. Post WWII we were drawn together in three cup ties of which we won two before our next league meeting which took place in Division Two of the Sussex County League when we as Hastings Town won 3-0 with goals from Steve Rimmer, Colin Spray and Chris Tutt on The Firs pitch on Saturday, 25th August, 1979 drawing 0-0 in the return game on Wednesday, 16th April, 1980 on our way to promotion up to Division One. There were then no league meetings between the sides until season 2014/15 when our matches resumed and prior to this season Hastings United’s record against East Grinstead Town in the Ryman and Bostik Leagues has been as follows:

GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart A light hearted – and on many occasions, anything but light hearted, look at life here in what is now known as the BetVictor Isthmian League's South Eastern Division. My rants and raves are not connected with the club in any way.

UNLUCKY 16 All good runs come to an end sooner or later. If you'd been offered United going unbeaten in league games up till mid December, you'd have grabbed it. An indicator of a club's promotion credentials is where it is three months or so into the season and here we are, top. Nothing has been won yet – we all know the sheer graft of a long season with all the variables that affect the outcome – but things are going well. Losing recently at Ashford was a big disappointment, of course. Perhaps things had gone too well against Chichester the previous weekend, it all fell into place in a memorable first half while the game at Homelands was pretty much the opposite. Nothing went right and the unpredictabilities of sport were illustrated to the frustration of the vociferous United support. Just one of those days. On the positive side, Cray Valley PM who are making a very respectable start to life at step 4 also lost so the gap remained four points. Whitehawk's game was postponed, they lurk in third place with two games in hand. And things didn't change much the weekend of the Herne Bay postponement either with many games not going ahead. Cray Wanderers went off like a rocket last season and – uncannily – didn't lose their first league game till December 15th – the corresponding weekend of our game at Homelands – when they went down 4-2 at Horsham. Uncanny like I said,eh? And all being well, we will do what they did, go again, rerail and move on. 16

These notes had to be cobbled together well in advance of this afternoon's opening game of 2020, sooooo here's hoping the reversal at Ashford was followed up with success at Burgess Hill on Boxing Day. Oh the days of putting it all together in Tony Cosens office on the Friday night before the game – it might not have been glossy etc etc, but it was always bang up-to-date.

MIXED FORTUNES Not much eh? As remarked upon in a previous Gut Feeling, what is it about us and East Grinstead? Well, it's pretty simple really eh. League cup games see just about everyone fielding a side of mixed ability and experience. We've got a decent squad these days with the young uns stepping up from The Academy in good shape and we've played East Grinstead twice in the League cup with two massive wins, 9-2 last season and an even more emphatic 12-3 a month or so ago when Davide Rodari went goal crazy. And in between those two encounters, three league games, all important games with points at stake as we aim for Premier Division football. And horrendously difficult to beat have been East Grinstead with United getting just a single point from the 0-0 stalemate earlier this season. A scrappy 1-0 will do fine today.

As predicted. Bury AFC should kick off next season as a semi pro club in presumably Division One of the N W Counties Football League. Good luck to them.

SAY IT HOW YOU SEE IT, JURGEN Things change as we move on, standards go up, some go down. And when I saw what follows on the BBC Sports website, my jaw dropped a little, then I had to have a laugh at what Jurgen Klopp had to say about a prospective expansion to Champions League football ....... Note: This article contains a word some readers may find offensive. Liverpool are among six Premier League clubs reportedly supporting plans to expand the Champions League group stage to 32 teams, a proposal which could apparently see the abolition of FA Cup replays and the removal of the second leg of the League Cup semi-final. "Today I read the top clubs want more games in the Champions League," said Klopp. "I am not involved in these plans. That's absolute bollocks." FA Cup replays abolished to accommodate an expanded Champions League? A Champions League that is already too big, a Champions League that includes runners up, third and fourth placed clubs from some leagues. And as usual, let's kill the goose and over do it all. The degradation of the FA Cup continues too, if these proposals are valid. Klopp got it just about right.

Above: Not the best picture but it shows thd state of our pitch back in 2003-2004 as we adjusted to life back in the Southern League's Eastern division. New drainage caused the series of lines across the pitch. The benefit 16 seasons on is we get very few postponements - the Herne Bay one recently was a real rarity.

Terrible news recently about the death of Bob Willis. Us old ’uns will never forget Headingley 1981 when he finished what Ian Botham had started. Legendary numbers 8-43. RIP Bob Willis.

GUT FEELING Cont P18 17

GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart CONT FROM P17 FROM BEHIND THE GOAL Hilarious. He's been in the scoring charts in recent games, indeed he won the game at Woodside Road last week when United saw off Sittingbourne. Plus a couple at Whitstable the week before. And heard at Ashford last weekend :-

“What's that coming over the hill – it's Gary Elphick, it's Gary Elphick”! Brilliant.

HASTINGS UNITED ON DEMAND I expect feelings are mixed on a pay-to-view United video service, given that more and more semi-pro football highlights appear free of charge on YouTube. Well, I took out a sub for it. A tenner a month won't impoverish me and the more of us that stick that tenner United's way every few weeks, the better. You’re doing our club a service. Below: Phone cameras just get better and better. This is a still off a video at VCD back in September.

18

Above: He came over the hill! Gary Elphick celebrates a goal. Photo thieved unashamedly from Joe Knight.

McCROSSANPEDIA A word I'd never come across, a word I had to Google, a word that exists and used by our Twitterer in Chief to describe conditions at Sittingbourne Tuesday night last week ....... “QUAGMIRICAL” Again – brilliant!

WEEK TO FORGET You just get days when if it can go wrong, it will ....... General Election – L Ashford away – L Chelsea – L Harlequins - L

TODAY’S VISITORS

HISTORY

County League, they were re-elected back in 1937 after winning the Mid Sussex League again and finished fifth in their first season.

East Grinstead Town Football Club was formed on May 8, 1890 although it was another ten years before they played their first competitive matches as founder members of the Mid Sussex Football League. In those early days the club played in blue and white with the town's coat of arms on the breast pocket. It was some years before they adopted their current colours of amber and black and were nicknamed 'The Wasps,' both of which survive to this day. They won the Mid Sussex League in 1902 and their first major honour followed seven years later when they shared the Sussex Junior Cup with Arundel. In 1909 they were awarded senior status which they have held ever since apart from two seasons when they were relegated to the intermediate third division of the Sussex County League in 1989. In 1912 Grinstead reached the Sussex Senior Cup final for the only time in their history but lost 4-1 to St Leonards Amateurs in a ferocious snowstorm. The Wasps were original members of the Sussex County League when it was founded in 1920, but they struggled to make any impact and after finishing bottom in 1927 and replaced by Horsham, they were not re-elected. Rather than returning to the Mid Sussex League, they had four successful seasons in the Brighton League before stepping up to the Southern Amateur League. A fresh challenge reinvigorated the club and they won the Division Three title in 1932 with 15 victories out of 18. Three years later they played on the Test Match cricket ground at Trent Bridge in Nottingham when they defeated Nottinghamshire Amateurs 6-0 in the old FA Amateur Cup. Determined to regain their place in the Sussex

20

In those halcyon days either side of the Second World War, four-figure crowds were the norm at their old ground in West Street, East Grinstead, which they shared with the town's cricketers. The club's record attendance is 2,006 for an FA Amateur Cup tie against Lancing in November, 1947. Success eluded Grinstead until 1952 when they won the Baldwin Cup, the forerunner of the Sussex County League Cup. That team is reckoned by many to be the finest the club has ever produced. It was certainly the most entertaining - 42 games that season in league and cup produced 222 goals! Grinstead were third in 1955, but their fortunes began to decline along with crowd numbers after that. They left West Street in 1959 but it wasn't until 1967 that they finally moved to their current home at East Court after a protracted battle to get the ground, which was prone to waterlogging, fit for football. In the meantime they had a spell at King Georges Field in the town centre. The club again finished third in 1973 but that was as good as it got for another 30 years although Grinstead did reach their first cup final since 1952 when they lost 4-1 to Haywards Heath in the RUR Cup in 1974 despite taking the lead. During the 1980s the club regularly hosted Crystal Palace and Brighton in charity fixtures watched by crowds of over 2,000 spectators. Wasps found themselves in Division Two for the first time in 1979 and even had two seasons in Division Three before regaining senior status. They were promoted back to Division One in 1993, but lasted just two years. Bob Smith led Wasps back to Division One in 2003 and they also won their first trophy for 52 years, beating Three Bridges 4-0 in the final of the RUR Cup.

EAST GRINSTEAD TOWN FC Unfortunately, the club were relegated back to Division Two on the final day of the 2004-05 season and in October 2006 Smith, the longestserving manager in the club's history, was replaced by former player Steve Norris. In his second season Wasps romped to the Second Division title by a massive 18 points, losing just twice all season. Their winning run of 14 successive league games at the start of the season meant they became the last senior non-league team in the country to drop points. Since then the club has established itself in the top flight, most recently under former Brighton striker Simon Funnell and their progress on the field has been matched off it. Floodlights were installed in 1997 and a new drainage system laid in 2003 that has transformed the playing surface, which is now one of the best in Sussex. In 2008 two new stands and a pitch perimeter barrier were erected and in 2014 with the GAC Stadium already meeting the requirements of the Ryman Football League after installing additional seating, the club began work on a new dressing room and hospitality complex, a new turnstile block and entrance and a resurfaced car park. Part of the 2014 funding included a £50,000 grant from FA Cup sponsors Budweiser, £100,000 from the Football Stadia Improvement Fund, £40,000 from Mid Sussex District Council and £35,000 from SITA Trust. Funnell’s side finished the season in second place, their highest ever County League position, and in May 2014, the club were accepted into the Ryman League for the first time in our history. In October 2014, Simon left the club and was replaced by Tony Beckingham, who returned for a second spell having previously been in charge between February 2010 – October 2011. Tony managed to keep the club in the Ryman League for a second season despite finishing in 23rd place in the table, but left to join Hythe Town in September 2015. Matt Longhurst was appointed new manager in October 2015 and after a difficult start he led the club to a 20th place finish, their highest in senior football. Grinstead have since consolidated at Isthmian League level and 2019-20 are looking forward to their sixth season at this level.

LEAGUE NEWS

From: Ian Townsend

HEAD WASP LEAVES THE NEST East Grinstead Town have announced that manager Matt Longhurst has left the club. Matt took the role in October 2015, and has been able to maintain the Wasps position at Step Four despite relatively limited resources. Last season they finished thirteenth in the South East Division, the highest placing in their history, but this season has not been at all positive, with the club sitting bottom of the table without a victory. Their last two fixtures saw them lose twelvethree at Hastings United, and three-one against Cray Valley PM; indeed there has been only one bright moment all season, a five-nil win against Chichester City in the Velocity Trophy which stands out as a beacon in a sea of disappointment. A club statement explains that 'results this

season have been disappointing and haven’t met the expectations of either Matt or the club’s committee and it was mutually agreed that a change was needed.' Assistant Manager Grant Hearn and club captain Drew Cooney took temporary charge.

DYNAN IS THE NEW HEAD WASP East Grinstead Town, who parted company with long-serving manager Matt Longhurst recently, have appointed former Kingstonian and Whyteleafe manager Leigh Dynan as his replacement. The Wasps, who are bottom of the BetVictor Isthmian South East Division without a league win so far this season, saw their last two home matches postponed.

YESTERDAY ONCE MORE Kelly’s Zeros - 22 August 1960

Photo: Former Spurs and U’s centre forward, Len Duquemin

I queued in Queens Road beneath wheeling, plaintive gulls. Once inside the football bus, even with top windows slid back, we sweated and gagged in the heat’s intensity. As the bus climbed out of town, its engine growling and its interior fittings vibrating, on the steeper slopes the gearbox rebelled, causing the bus to shudder with arthritic ire. The stench of mucky oil and petrol swept through the upper deck, mingling with the sour smell of tobacco, leaving a dizzying sensation. Eventually, we found enough height to gaze back across the town’s rooftops towards a gleaming Pevensey Bay and an indistinct Beachy Head. It was hardly the weather for football. 3,749 turned up to witness Tim Kelly’s ‘revolution’, a respectable gate by present League Two standards. Those supporters settling for the grass bank, had to shield their eyes from the dazzling sun. Thankfully, a refreshing onshore breeze cooled us, ruffling the flag bearing the town’s ancient crest. The bright, brassy tune, ‘Ladies of Calcutta’, emitted from the crackling tannoy, as it would for the next two years. Only the infiltration of the Mersey beat would force the club to concede that the 60s had arrived. But when the teams ran out, the rallying cry of ‘Sussex by the Sea’ was cranked up, just as it was when dad brought me, six years before. In 1960, many British teams still adopted the WM formation, although considered anachronistic abroad. Hastings’s interpretation was the Wimp – Marshmallow version. On this parched afternoon they were swamped. Wisbech’s left-winger, Billy Elliott, a former England international, had lost some of his former pace, but none of his menace, fizzing scudding centres across hapless Hastings’s box. He seemed unstoppable, as was his player/manager, Jesse Pye, once an FA Cup winner with Wolves. After just 90 seconds, Wisbech were ahead as Pye rifled home a free kick with such venom that the ball cannoned off the board behind and back into play. Almost from the restart, Elliott crossed for Pye to nimbly side-step several inadequate challenges before flicking in his second. And with only 15 minutes gone, Elliott was once again the provider as Pye completed his hattrick with a vicious volley. Northern Ireland’s World Cup ‘keeper, Norman Uprichard, could only admire the power of Pye’s finishing. The U’s famous centre forward, Len Duquemin, a former First Division winner with Spurs, lashed in, to reduce the deficit, but Hastings lost 2-5 and never looked forward. Relegation seemed a certainty by the drenching autumn months that left the U’s low and wet. Kelly’s folly of axing sound players like Gerry Boon and Joe White, and splashing the cash so wildly became evident by March 1961 when the club put out half-time collection blankets. Worse was to follow. Hastings were relegated, having mustered only 25 points and conceded 99 goals. Kelly’s extravagant recruits were released, and a threadbare squad sped to the bottom of the league below.

HASTINGS UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB POLICIES

Customer Charter Full details of our Customer Charter are available at our website: www.hastingsunited.com. These include our policy on ticket and pricing, abandoned matches and our involvement in the Hastings Community.

Health & Safety Hastings United Football Club takes seriously your health and safety during your visit to the Pilot Field.

The Club Believes Customer Care starts on the inside, with a good team of staff and work ethic. Most of our staff are volunteers but The Club expect our staff to always do their best.

Please note that the officers and stewards of Hastings United Football Club will enforce Ground Regulations. A copy of these Regulations is posted at the entrance to each turnstile and within the ground on the wall next to the food bar.

Our staff should remain courteous even in difficult situations. The Club and its staff know they are offering a service and that they would like every customer to return.

Please note that the following are offences under the Football (Offences) Act 1991, as amended: the throwing of any object within the ground without lawful authority or excuse, the chanting of anything of an indecent or racist nature: the entry onto the playing area or any adjacent area to which spectators are not generally admitted without lawful authority or excuse.

We believe that people come first when offering a service.

Under the Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol etc.) Act 1985, the following are offences for which a person can be arrested by a police officer: attempting to enter the ground or being inside the ground whilst drunk: being in possession of any intoxicating liquor, or bottle, can or other portable container which could cause damage or personal injury when entering the ground.

We expect our staff to be friendly and helpful and to know their job or be able to call upon someone who is able to respond to the needs of our customers. We expect our staff to give their full attention to a customer in any situation that arises.

In Addition We expect our staff and volunteers to care about their job as this will ensure they care about our customers. We expect our staff and volunteers to treat every customer as they would like to be treated themselves. We in return expect our customers to treat our volunteers and staff with respect and The Club will not tolerate any physical or verbal abused aimed at them.

ON THIS DAY Historically, today has only recently been a Bank Holiday in England and Wales, therefore, our look back at some of the matches played in past seasons is restricted and we have taken one from the past three decades. Wednesday, 1st January.

1986 The Today Newspaper League Division One leaders Manchester United extended their advantage to five points after they defeated Birmingham City 2-0 and the next pair both drew Everton being held 2-2 at Newcastle United while Liverpool had an identical result at home to Sheffield Wednesday. Only goal difference continued to separate the top two in Division Two as leaders Norwich City won 1-0 at Fulham and Portsmouth beat third placed Wimbledon 3-1. Fourth placed Charlton did not play and Brighton moved level om points after they defeated Crystal Palace 2-0. Gillingham won 2-1 at runaway leaders Reading in Division Three, however, the Biscuitmen were still nineteen points clear of second placed Derby County. There was also no change at the top of Division Four with the leading pack all winning, leaders Swindon defeated Colchester 2-1 while Chester beat Port Vale and Mansfield won 2-0 at Preston.

We, then Hastings Town, visited Chatham Town in our first season in the Southern Division of the Southern League where we won 3-1 with goals from Steve Daubney, Wayne Peacock and Dean White before a lowly crowd of just 133.

1992 The 1-4 defeat at home of Manchester United by Q.P.R. saw them loose top spot in the Barclays League Division One Leeds United taking over after winning 3-1 at West Ham United. Trailing eight points behind were Sheffield Wednesday after drawing 1-1 with Oldham Athletic while Manchester City had a similar result at Chelsea. The top two sides in Division Two both won by the odd goal of three, leaders Blackburn Rovers defeating Cambridge United while Ipswich Town won at Port Vale. Southend moved into third place after defeating Newcastle United 4-0 to go ahead of Middlesbrough who drew 1-1 with Derby County. At the start of the day two points covered the top four sides in Division Three, however, the day’s results saw Brentford emerge as clear leaders after defeating Hartlepool 1-0 while Birmingham City were two points back after being held 2-2 by Hull City and W.B.A. lost 2-3 to Fulham. There was a change at the top of Division Four where Barnet took over first place from Mansfield after the Bees beat Lincoln City 1-0 and Town could only draw 2-2 at Wrexham.

We, then still Hastings Town, visited Canterbury City in the Southern Division of the Southern League and won 2-1 with two goals from Carlton Wynter before a crowd of 182.

2003 Despite heavy rain in the south and snow in the north the majority of fixtures went ahead this day: In the Barclays F.A. Premiership there was no change at the top as both the first two sides won. Leaders Arsenal defeated third placed Chelsea by the odd goal of five while Manchester United stayed five points behind after beating Sunderland 2-1 with goals from David Beckham and Paul Scholes. Below them Newcasle defeated Liverpool 1-0 while Everton were held 2-2 at home by Manchester City. Runaway Nationwide Division One leaders Portsmouth were held 2-2 at Watford as four of the seven matches finished with level scores. An inactive Brighton dropped to the bottom of the table when basement side Sheffield Wednesday won 2-0 at Rotherham. Wigan Athletic, the clear leaders in Division Two, defeated Notts. County 3-1 while second placed Bristol City dropped a place after losing 1-2 at Wycombe Wanderers being replaced by Cardiff City despite them only drawing 1-1 with Swindon. There was no change at the top of Division Three as the leading three sides all won: Leaders Hartlepool defeating Carlisle 2-1 while Rushden & Diamonds beat Shrewsbury 5-1 and Bury edged out Hull City 1-0.

We, then in our last season as Hastings Town and playing in the Premier Division of the Southern League, were in the middle of a ten day spell without football and would not play again until the following Tuesday when we would entertain Grantham Town.
