FROM THE BOARDROOM WELCOME Welcome everyone today to the Pilot Field as we get back into league action following a trip away to Burgess Hill Town in the Velocity Sports Trophy. Going back to our last league match here on New Years Day, how amazing was that first half!!!?? To be 4-0 up after 14 mins was an incredible way to start the year. Thumping East Grinstead Town 5-1 was exactly what the doctor ordered for 2020! We followed up that match by heading to Whyteleafe, which holds some personal memories for me. It was great to take a bunch of my family members on a Hastings away day, of which we were behind the goal the first half as we went up 1-0 via a Craig Stone header. Whilst the game wasn’t pretty it was the sort of game you dig deep, defend well and walk out with 3 points, 3 points closer to the league title we all crave. Special mentions for Stoney, Gary Elphick and Louis Rogers who I thought were excellent as we defended with true grit!

Billy Wood

for this to happen and now it will! I have met a couple of prospective managers this week (I have a meeting today also!) and hope we will be able to announce the successful candidate shortly. It’s not just about picking the most experienced, we want a coach who fits the culture we are creating and can grow within our club. This is an exciting journey that I am going to really push here at Hastings United. Whilst we did lose 2-1 at Burgess Hill Town in the Velocity Sports Trophy a lot can be taken away from that game. A very young side of academy players narrowly lost to their first team and they will take a lot of lessons from it in their continued footballing journey. Today we are in league action and also collecting for our Lights on for Lori campaign we sadly couldn’t raise for before Xmas due to the cancellation of the Herne Bay game.

WE BANG THE DRUM AND ROLL ON! ... We have announced that for the 2020/21 season we will be launching a Hastings COYU United Women’s Football Team. This was high on my agenda when I came into the Billy club, something the directors wholly support, I know Pat especially was pushing Billy Wood HUFC Chief Executive Officer

MANAGER’S NOTES Good afternoon everyone. A warm welcome to the Ramsgate board members, staff and players to the Pilot Field today ..... from all at HUFC we wish you a safe journey to and from our town.

Chris Agutter

... we know Ramsgate will pose a real test - especially from an attacking perspective

Today against Ramsgate we remain determined to maintain our 100% winning record at home ...... a team in transition now, under the guidance of the former East Grinstead Manager Matt Longhurst, we know Ramsgate will pose a real test .... especially from an attacking perspective as they boast some real firepower - which certainly isn’t done any justice by their league position ...... HOWEVER, we also know that if we once again bring our best version of ourselves we will give ourselves a great opportunity to win and in doing so will extend our lead at the top of the table. As always I look forward to seeing and hearing our 12th man rock the Pilot Field ..... you gave Whyteleafe’s ‘support’, like Ashford’s a couple of weeks earlier a lesson in their own back yard last Saturday ..... you sang us over the line and once again showed everyone that you really are the best in the league .... the best by a mile .... COYU’s!

HASTINGS UNITED ANNOUNCE PLANS FOR WOMEN’S TEAM We are happy to announce the intention, that Hastings United Football Club will be launching a Women’s team for the 2020/21 season. HUFC Chief Exec Billy Wood added, “This is way overdue by this football club and was incredibly high on my agenda when coming to this club. I was shocked that it was something the club didn’t have or any plans to make it happen, we had to put that right.” Hastings United will be applying to participate in the Sussex County Women & Girl’s Football League from the 2020/21 season and are now open to applicants who would be interested in the role of Women’s First Team Manager. Wood stressed how important this is to pushing Women’s football in Hastings. “I want to make it clear, this isn’t Hastings setting up a Women’s team to tick a box, give kit out and hope for the best. We have a culture we are curating at this club that has to be something we embed and make part of when it comes to the Women’s game. A Women’s first team is one step towards having a true pathway for females in this area. Eventually we want more age groups to be represented but at first you

have to show who and what you are. This is Hastings United Football Club, a club committed to being community leaders and serving with distinction.” The club are looking for an ambitious candidate for the role of Women’s First Team Manager. “We are looking for a candidate who has a wealth of player knowledge in the Sussex/Kent area, fits our culture on and off the pitch and has the belief and ambition to take this club forward to compete at the highest level possible. We aren’t looking to make up the numbers and want to be competitive, the successful candidate will be given the tools to be able to do so and will work closely with myself in making sure we are pushing in the right direction.” To apply or for more information please email billy.wood@hastingsunited.com

PREVIOUS MEETINGS WITH RAMSGATE FC Although Ramsgate were regular opponents of the original Hastings United, we did not meet until we entered Division One of the Ryman League in season 2005/06, however, since then we have done so on many occasions, including a pre-season match at the Southwood Stadium in 2010 which we won 2-1. In both 2007 and 2013 we met in the first qualifying round of the F.A. Challenge Cup, the Rams winning the first game with a lone Steffan Ball goal whilst a solitary effort from Sam Adams saw United win the latter tie, both games taking place here at the Pilot Field. Between 2007 and 2009 we played four matches together in the Ryman Premier Division whilst our games since 2013 have been in the League’s Division One South/SE.

GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart A light hearted – and on many occasions, anything but light hearted, look at life here in what is now known as the BetVictor Isthmian League's South Eastern Division. My rants and raves are not connected with the club in any way. MINI LEAGUE BREAKAWAY Words that come back to haunt you in football. How many times, for example, does the award of ‘Manager of the month’ turn into the poisoned chalice? And in the case of Hythe, big words for their keeper and a succession of clean sheets which saw plenty of praise – deserved it was, too – from boss Steve Watt as his outfit gets a run of decent form going at last. And a 3-0 drubbing at Whitehawk duly follows.

Well known United follower Mark Westbrook approached recently by obscure Premier League wannabe for a quick selfie.

Burgess Hill. What WHAT is going on there? Relegated from the Premier, start off 2019-20 with a 7-2 hammering of – Hythe – then get hammered themselves 5-1 at Haywards Heath. And a week ago as United put together a top performance to win at Whyteleafe, Burgess Hill get absolutely slaughtered 7-0 on their own ground by Ashford who, with us and Whitehawk are beginning to create some open space at the top of the division. Fixtures at Whitehawk and here against Ashford (that one's next month and I miss it as warmer climes lure me away) could be crucial. It's early days yet, nothing has been won – but it's beginning to remind me of 2001-2002 when it was Hastings Town, Grantham, Dorchester and Histon setting the pace in the Southern League's Eastern Division. 18 seasons ago!

16

Paul Bastock (L) one of the semi-pro game's characters, assistant boss at Kings Lynn. Was in goal here for Boston United back in 1998-99.

FA CUP RELEGATED Well it has been, hasn't it? Back in the early 70s when I was an ardent Chelsea follower, I recall the FA Cup being a major part of the season and the traditional, time honoured end of the season game was at Wembley, the FA Cup Final. No sponsors names, no fiddling around with kick-off time – the last Saturday of the season, 3 pm, Wembley. And the earlier rounds, round 3 when the big boys came in, big boys who took it seriously which can hardly be said for the FA Cup (sponsored by whoever) of today.

Top 10 Premier League/Championship changes in attendance over FA Cup weekend Team FA Cup attendance Previous home attendance Drop Sheffield United 11,133 30,222 19,089 Cardiff 5,828 23,583 17,755 Charlton 6,426 18,058 11,632 Burnley 8,043 19,561 11,518 Birmingham 7,330 18,616 11,286 Bristol City 9,730 20,858 11,128 Southampton 20,091 30,976 10,885 Brighton 20,349 30,559 10,210 Crystal Palace 15,507 25,462 9,955 Watford 14,373 20,584 6,211 Found these depressing stats on the BBC Sport website a few days ago. The team changes also speak volumes – Sheffield United alone made 11 - as do the attendances shown here. The FA Cup is not what it once was. The numbers do not lie. FA Cup, Velocity Trophy – whatever – they simply don't have the appeal. And the FA Trophy – I didn't know this ;- “In the FA Trophy, the national cup competition for non-league sides, clubs have the option of playing a single tie to a finish - if they agree in advance - rather than have a replay, although extra-time is played before ties go to penalties. The option does not exist in the FA Cup”. Knockout competitions are struggling to attract the punters! Having said that, United have played in front of some decent Velocity Trophy gates this season and 141 were at Burgess Hill on Tuesday to see a much changed U's side give the Hillbillies a good run for their money before going down 2-1. EAST GRINSTEAD 1 WHITEHAWK 1 What a good result for us, what an unexpected result. Whitehawk had a couple of games in hand on us and three in hand on Ashford – and must have expected to win at East Grinstead on Tuesday night. The Wasps are having a torrid season at the bottom of the league and have yet to win after 17 attempts, just sacked their manager and had fielded a virtually new team here on New Year's Day when they were on the wrong end of a United blitz that saw us 4-0 up after 13 minutes. To get a point from the Whitehawk game was pretty creditable – and did us a favour too.

Step 4 play-off shambles of last season quietly disposed of.

ROMFORD REVIVAL ‌.. Not going so well. The weather has caused games to be postponed and ex Billericay owner Glenn Tamplin's efforts at his new club are having mixed results when they do manage to get a game played. Losing 6-0 at promotion hunting Aveley did their prospects in Isthmian North no good recently. Remember Alex Akrofi from three or four seasons ago? He wasn't here too long, ended up doing pretty well up the A21 at Tonbridge and is now at Aveley and helped himself to four of those goals.

Think I may well get a copy of this.

The Welsh Cup from 1994-95 appeared to be in some disarray! 18

UPS AND DOWNS 2019-2020 To be looked at in more detail as the business end of the season approaches. Peter Miller, who follows Ware Town in Isthmian South Central – currently top – must have an Einstein like grasp of all the ups and downs and ins and outs as the FA chops and changes the semi pro game in order to attain that perfect pyramid structure. He did some great spreadsheets last season, updating them week by week and hopefully will do so again this season.

four clubs – will have PPG applied with the worst two being relegated. It is horrendously complex and I shall look at in detail as the season unfolds. But at least we know that all seven champions and play-off winners at step 4, the level we play at, will go up this season. Now to get onto Peter Miller and unashamedly get cribbing the spreadsheets I hope he's going to be doing .......

Suffice to say here that the disgraceful win your play-off final but no promotion shambles that wrecked season end for Heybridge Swifts and Brighouse Town at the end of the 18-19 campaign has been quietly scrapped this season by the FA dunderheads who belatedly must have seen that for what it was. But the dreaded points per game equation is still featuring – in step 3 where the third from bottom places – that's

in the Thames & Medway Combination. A new main stand was erected along the southern side of the pitch at Southwood, which is still in use today, and in November 1959 the Rams were visited by Everton to mark the official illumination of the newly installed floodlights – the ‘Toffees’ winning 7-1. In 1967/68 the Club again won the Kent Senior Shield and were runners-up in the Southern League Cup.

Ramsgate has had senior football teams within the town since the late-1800s, but despite the paucity of reports in the local press there are match reports for Ramsgate Athletic from 1895. At this time matches were being played on a number of grounds around the town, including the Rams’ current home - Southwood. Football in east Kent closed down during the Great War, and in 1919 the Southwood ground was provided for Ramsgate Town, by then known simply as Ramsgate. In their first season they finished 3rd in the Kent League and reached the Kent Senior Cup final, but lost 1-0 to Northfleet at Maidstone before a crowd of 10,000. In 1924 Ramsgate Town folded and Ramsgate Grenville moved to Southwood and, apart from the appearance and demise a few years later of Ramsgate Press Wanderers in 1932, became the senior Ramsgate side until WWII again brought an end to all football in east Kent. Football resumed after the war and Southwood was taken over by the current club in 1945, then called Ramsgate Athletic, with the pitch being turned through 90 degrees and covers to the terraces and a stand erected from the anti-invasion steelwork from nearby Pegwell Bay. The Club played in the Kent League until it was disbanded in 1959, and were runners-up in the Kent Senior Shield in 1946/47, finalists in the Kent Senior Cup in 1947/48, Kent League Cup winners in 1948/49, followed by winning the League and runners-up in the Kent Senior Shield in 1949/50. In the next golden period, from 1954 to 1957, the Club won back-to-back League Championships (1955/56 & 1956/57), with a new attendance record being set in 1955/56 when 5,200 spectators watched the local derby against Margate. They also made Club history when they reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the first time in November 1955, eventually losing 5-3 at Watford, a record that stood for the next 50 years. In 1958/59 the Club also started playing in the Thames & Medway Combination League, winning the Eastern Division that season but finishing runners-up to Sittingbourne in the Champions’ Cup Final. With the demise of the KCFA Kent League in 1959, the Club joined the Southern League, as well as continuing

20

In 1971/72 they finished runners-up in the League and were promoted to the Premier Division. In 1972 the Club changed its name to Ramsgate but after a decline in fortunes off the pitch the Club were relegated to Division 1 and later resigned from League in 1976, the 1st team taking the Reserves’ place in the new Kent League and in 1988/89 won the Kent Senior Trophy for the 2nd consecutive year and finished runners-up in the Kent League Cup, whilst in 1998/99 the Club was eligible for promotion to the Southern League after winning the Kent Premier League championship, but decided the time was not right, and also won the Kent Senior Trophy and reached the semi-finals of the Kent League Cup. The 2004/2005 season saw the Club capitalise on the promise of its successful youth and a tough preseason programme had the Rams playing (and defeating) 4 sides from higher leagues, including old adversaries Margate. In competitive football the Rams made good progress in the FA Cup, despatching Kingstonian (2 leagues above) before falling in the 2nd half to Dulwich Hamlet (1 league higher), whilst in the FA Vase they again reached the 3rd Round Proper. The best form was saved for the domestic season, where the Rams again did the double, the Kent League Premier Division Cup as well as the Kent League Championship by a clear margin, gaining promotion to the Isthmian League Division 1 South. Summer 2005 saw the Rams start the new era with two further pieces of silverware, beating Herne Bay in the Kent League Challenge Shield and Margate in the Kent Messenger Challenge Cup. The season continued with the Club reaching the 1st Round Proper of the FA Cup, the only Step 4 club in the country to do so that year and equalling the Club record set 50 years earlier. The Club also won the League at the first attempt, securing back-to-back promotions to the Isthmian Premier for 2006/2007. For most of their first season in the Premier Division the Rams were settled in the ‘play-off spots’ and spent several weeks in 2nd place, but the toll on the squad was noticeable and injuries saw their form dip in the last weeks and they eventually slipped to 9th. This also meant a new record, as the Club had only managed to stay in the Southern League Premier for a single season.

2007/08 saw the Rams set more club records, winning the Isthmian League Cup and also reaching the play-offs for Conference South. For 2008/09 the Club erected new covers to the terraces behind each goal, to replace those erected after the war but removed in the 1970s, however having lost key players an average performance on the pitch dipped in the last months with relegation to Division 1 South. This saw several players leave to remain playing at the higher level, and a much younger Ramsgate team in 2009/10 avoided a further drop as some had predicted. After returning to Division 1 the Rams usually finished near the play-offs until 2013/14 when, after five managers in 14 months, the Rams ended up in 21st place. This saw the return of Jim and Danny Ward for their 3rd spell in charge, almost 20 years since they first joined the Club, and though they were in 2nd place at Christmas the form dropped and the Rams ended up mid-table. A good start in 2016/17 didn’t last and after slipping into the bottom quarter, with 1 point from 3 games over Christmas head coach Lloyd Blackman replaced the Wards. A 10-match unbeaten run saw a mid-table finish reprieve, with Blackman confirmed as gaffer for 2017/18. A season of mixed fortunes saw a lean patch after Christmas with some significant injuries saw the Rams sliding in the table, but another strong finish lifted Ramsgate back towards mid-table. In 2018/19 the Rams dispatched Gosport Boro before Hemel Hempstead stopped them in the 3rd Qualifying Round on the FA Cup in Herts, while AFC Hornchurch stopped their FA Trophy run in Essex. Following this, and an unbeaten 8 game run in the League, the Rams lost two in a row and Blackman decided to step down, being replaced by former Sittingbourne manager Nick Davis (who played at centre half and at times captained the Rams in their Ryman Premier days) in December 2018. Nick saw out the rest of the season but after a poor start to the 2019/20 campaign, Nick was replaced by a joint management team of Jason Lillis, Terry Sedge and Joe Radford. That management team only lasted 3 months and after a change of Chairman which saw James Lawson replace Paul Bowden-Brown, who had to step down for health reasons, Matt Longhurst was swiftly appointed along with his management team consisting of Liam Taylor and Seb Tidey.

LEAGUE NEWS From: Ian Townsend

OAKS SIGN A DART Sevenoaks Town have announced the signing - on dual registration terms - of Dartford midfielder Ryan Hayes. Ryan is a Dartford Legend, and apart from one small spell at Concord Rangers has been with the Princes Park side since 2005. At the start of this season he had made 448 starts, 161 substitute appearances, and scored 109 goals for the National League South side. He knows what it takes to win an Isthmian promotion, as he did it twice. He advised the local press at the start of this season that he expected it to be his last at Step Two, because he wanted to end his Darts career on a high, but that he wanted to continue playing after leaving the club.

FAVERSHAM BRING IN FORMER PROFESSIONAL Paul Hayes is now a Lilywhite Faversham Town have announced the signing of forward Paul Hayes. Paul was recently at Coggeshall Town, making his Seed Growers debut in the draw at Bury Town - but that was his first and only game there. Prior to that he was one of a number of players who arrived at Romford for their match against the Coggeshall, lost, and then left. He is vastly experienced and counts Scunthorpe United, Barnsley, Wycombe Wanderers and AFC Sudbury amongst his former clubs. He played for Sudbury last year, scoring twelve goals.

A PAIR OF MILLERS Cray Valley PM have signed Abdul Lyoubi from VCD Athletic and Joe Tennent from Leatherhead. Tennent scored on his Millers debut, but couldn't prevent his new side falling to defeat at home to Herne Bay. The centre-half started the season at Worthing, arriving at Woodside Road in the summer after winning Players Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year whilst at Three Bridges last season. He made nine appearances for the Mackerel Men, and after his move to the Tanners made ten more. Lyoubi had made six appearances for Vickers this season, scoring in the last one - the win at Faversham in September. The defender previously played for Chatham Town, and was an U18 player at Dulwich Hamlet.

BAY SIGN CARRINGTON Herne Bay announced the signing of Ramsgate midfielder Dan Carrington. Dan joined the Rams from Faversham Town in June, after making one hundred and fifty appearances for the Lilywhites. He made nineteen appearances for the Rams this season, the last one coming in the recent seven-nil defeat at Sittingbourne.

RAMS BRING IN A BAY DEFENDER Ramsgate have signed Herne Bay defender Michael Turner - and threw him straight into the starting lineup last Saturday as they hosted VCD Athletic. Michael is a Herne Bay stalwart, who made 328 appearances for the club in nine years before leaving to play for Hythe Town and Canterbury City. He returned to Bay in the summer, but has made only three appearances this season.

LEAGUE NEWS From: Ian Townsend

A SWARM OF WASPS East Grinstead Town's new manager Leigh Dynan didn't get a great deal of rest over the holiday period, as he was masterminding FIVE transfers. Jeffrey Gyamfi came in from VCD Athletic. The defender joined Vickers during the 17-18 season from Witham Town, but has made only one appearance this season, fifteen last. He previously played for Whyteleafe and Brentwood Town. Zak Henry arrived from Ashford United. Zak, a midfielder, joined the Nuts and Bolts in June and has made eighteen appearances this season. He started the previous campaign at Cray Wanderers, making ten appearances, before moving on to Grays Athletic, where he made eight more. He was an almost ever-present for the Wands in 17-18 as they reached the play-offs.

Jalen Jones moved over from Merstham. Jalen made four appearances for the Moatsiders after moving over from Worthing, for whom he'd already played thirteen times. He joined the Mackerel Men last season and was an immediate success, making twenty two appearances and- despite being a defender- scoring five goals in his first ten games. He had a trial at Dartford in the summer, and had previously played for Merstham before first signing for Worthing. Jonathan Moanda moved from Aveley - although the defender doesn't seem to have made an appearance for the Millers. Last season he played for Harlow Town and Northwood, making nine appearances for the Hawks, and previously played for Farnborough. Reece Williams-Bowers came in from South Park. The midfielder made eleven appearances for the Sparks this season, scoring in his first against Waltham Abbey. A former AFC Wimbledon youth, he spent part of last season at Lewes, but doesn't seem to have made an appearance for the Rooks apart from in pre-season friendlies. Henry, Williams-Bowers and Gyamfi all played a part in the January 4th 2-1 defeat to Sittingbourne. Moanda was on the bench, an unused substitute.

ON THIS DAY

A look back at some of the matches played in past seasons on: Saturday, 11th January.

1958 Wolves advantage at the top of Division One was reduced to six points after they were held 1-1 at home by sixth placed Luton Town and Preston leap frogged W.B.A. having beaten them 3-1 to take second place. Basement side Sheffield Wednesday produced a good result defeating Portsmouth 4-2 but were still three points behind Sunderland who were beaten 2-5 at Aston Villa for whom goal scoring full back Stan ‘The Wham’ Lynn netted the division’s only hat trick. The top two in Division Two both won leaders Liverpool defeating third placed Fulham 2-1, a result which cost the Cottagers a place, while second placed West Ham United won 3-2 at Derby County; Charlton Athletic going up to third place after beating Stoke City 3-0. Division Three (South) leaders Norwich City dropped two places after being crushed 1-7 at Brentford; Brighton taking over at the top despite only drawing 1-1 with Q.P.R., Dave Sexton scoring the goal. There was no change at the top of the Northern Section with none of the first four sides being beaten, leaders Bury drew 2-2 at Southport while Scunthorpe closed the gap with a 2-1 win against Gateshead and Barrow drew 1-1 with Stockport County.

We, then Hastings & St.Leonards, playing in Division Two of the Sussex County League had no match this day but would make the short trip to Sidley United the following week.

1975 Ipswich Town beat high flying Middlesbrough 2-0 to go top of the first division; however, there were seven other sides within a three point spread: One point behind wee Everton who put three past bottom side Leicester City without reply. Stoke City missed out on third place when held 0-0 at home by lowly Birmingham Ciy. Arsenal moved five points clear of the bottom three and ahead of Chelsea on goal average after they beat Carlisle United 2-1 with goals from Alex Cropley and John Radford. Division Two leaders Manchester United opened up a six point gap with a 2-0 victory over second bottom Sheffield Wednesday while second placed Sunderland lost 2-4 at lowly Portsmouth. Third placed Norwich City also lost, going down 1-2 at Cardiff City. In Division Three leaders Blackburn Rovers beat second placed Charlton Athletic 3-1 and the Addicks dropped a place to be replaced by Plymouth Argyle who won 7-3 at Bournemouth while a 0-1 defeat at Southend kept Brighton three places off the bottom. Mansfield extended the gap at the top of Division Four to five points by winning 1-0 at second placed Shrewsbury while Chester were a further six points back after losing 0-1 at home to Rotherham.

We, then still Hastings & St. Leonards, lost 0-1 away to Rye United in Division Two of the Sussex County League.

2014 In the F.A. Barclays Premiership 2-0 was the most frequent result with five of the seven games so finishing: With neither first nor second sides Arsenal and Manchester City in action, Chelsea moved into top spot after defeating Hull 2-0 with goals from Eden Hazard and Fernando Torres. Everton moved up a place to fourth by defeating Norwich City by the day’s par score. Tottenham Hotspur also moved up a place with the same score against basement side Crystal Palace their goals scored by Christian Erikson and Jermain Defoe. Inactive Npower Championship leaders Leicester City saw their advantage cut after Burnley won 2-1 at second bottom Yeovil. Third placed Q.P.R. won 3-1 at Ipswich Town while Brighton retained sixth place after defeating Birmingham City 1-0 with a goal from David Lopez. In Division One the leading sides all won, top side Brentford defeated Port Vale 2-0 while Leyton Orient beat Carlisle United 4-0 and Wolves won 2-0 against Preston. There was also no change at the top of Division Two with leaders Scunthorpe winning 2-0 at Morecambe while Burton Albion, who were two points back, kept up the pressure with a 2-1 win against Cheltenham Town.

After three postponements we returned to action by entertaining Peacehaven & Telscombe in Division One (South) of the Ryman Isthmian League where we lost 1-2, our goal scored by Tim Olorunda before a crowd of 568.
