A warm welcome to the Haywards Heath board members, staff and players to the Pilot Field today ..... from all at HUFC we wish you a safe journey to and from our town. Today against Haywards Heath we once again remain determined to maintain our 100% winning record at home ...... a team that is now well and truly established in the Isthmian league and a team that under Shane Saunders is as well drilled and organised as any ....... therefore we fully appreciate that today like any game against Haywards Heath will be a tough test .... GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart A light hearted – and on many occasions, anything but light hearted, look at life here in what is now known as the BetVictor Isthmian League's South Eastern Division. My rants and raves are not connected with the club in any way. BREAKAWAY As surmised in last weekend's Gut Feeling, that little mini league at the top is beginning to open up a gap – United, Ashford and Whitehawk. Things can change quickly though. Ashford started off with five wins, then went on a bad run but have revived well in recent weeks and are right back in contention. While we were seeing off Ramsgate, they were beating Faversham 2-0 with Whitehawk doing their prospects no harm at all with a 2-1 win at Guernsey on Sunday. 1004 attendance at Footes Lane for that one, attendances holding up well at Guernsey though they have fallen out of contention. We, of course, had a decent attendance here a week ago, breaking the 700 barrier with 703 through the turnstiles. You can gauge the likely gate if you park in Elphinstone Road and I had a steep climb back up to the car – well beyond Ochiltree Road! More of the same today, I expect. Guernsey – and neighbours, Jersey Bulls who have won all 21 of their league games in their first season in English semi-pro football at step 6 – have no competition re their attendances which can hardly be said for us. 661 and 703 at step 4 are excellent gates for our last two home games. Hopefully, like it says, more of the same today and as for February 8th when Ashford are here, potential for another 1000 plus .......

16

Er, midweek fixtures didn't have too much impact on the Isthmian SE table, eh!

Two words sum up the midweek games in our league and their impact on the table. GAME OFF. All of them, not one game was played. January, doncha love it! THE TENSION MOUNTS Playing well, winning games, four points clear with a game in hand – it's looking good for United. And – all too quickly – it can go belly up. Some big big games coming up. Those of you who saw the two games against Haywards Heath last season know what to expect, another tough 90 minutes. They did the double over us last time, 2-1 at their place and 4-2 here, but United went some way to putting that right with a 1-1 draw in the away fixture three months ago. Two vital games in the space of a few days next month. February 4th sees the U's at Whitehawk with Ashford here the following Saturday. Both games that I shall have to follow from many miles away though it has to be said at the time of tapping this out – not a given as The Philippines deals with a volcano erupting that a week ago had caused Manila Airport to cancel flights. Hopefully that won't include mine next Thursday evening! Watch that space.

My railway colleagues, Trevor (L) and Andy. Trev follows West Ham and Andy goes all round the country with Chelsea and, as some may recall, is a recent convert back to his home town outfit, Horsham. They both went on a tour round West Ham's stadium and Andy was dug in the ribs by Trev when he asked innocently where the trophy room was. The dig in the ribs was repeated more recently when Trev saw West Ham win at Stamford Bridge. Trev had to celebrate in a restrained way as he was in amongst the home fans with Andy next to him, so that elbow came into play again.

Goalmouth action in the 1-1 draw at Haywards Heath back in October. Hanbury Park one of the better stadiums around. GUT FEELING Cont P18

17

GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart CONTINUED FROM P17 PROMOTION ISSUES, PPG ETC .....

You don't win a league in January, you don't get relegated in February. Plenty of issues yet to be resolved this season with the added ingredients of the FA reorganisation of the semi-pro game. This is the current structure of semi pro football starting at Step 1 with the National League. We, along with Haywards Heath currently live in step 4 in the bottom right hand corner in Isthmian South East. A quick look along that level shows currently seven divisions with another one to be added at the end of this season. An 8th division at step 4 will see that perfect pyramid at long last. The structure of the game below the EFL has long been in need of a shake up. The old Southern League Premier – prior to 2004 – was frankly a joke due to the travelling. A 510 mile round trip to Tiverton is my personal record – others will have travelled further. It has to be said, Isthmian South East division mileage is absolutely nothing in comparison. Ups and downs are going to be something else at the end of this season. August next year sees step 4 operating with a new 8th league – based up in the North and probably administered by the Northern Premier League. The Isthmian League set-up will be as is – three regional divisions and a Premier. I need to have a good look into how promotion and relegation works in the Isthmian set-up. The three champions and play-off winners in North, South Central and South Eastern will all be promoted – NONE 18

of this nonsense we saw last season with play-off winners denied promotion. But a total of six clubs going up from the three Isthmian regional divisions will surely see sideways moves because you can be sure 6 clubs will not be relegated from the Isthmian Premier. There will be some interleague shuffling around at step 3 to find homes for promoted clubs from step 4. As was the case last season with Walton Casuals, Metropolitan Police and Harrow Borough who ended up in the Southern League. The new division at step 4. Where do the clubs come from to form it? It will presumably be be a combination of clubs relegated from step 3 and clubs promoted from step 5. It's difficult to work it out – 8 clubs relegated from step 3 plus two more third from bottom clubs based on points per game (ppg). That's 10 going down to step 4 with 14 going up to step 3. Throw into the mix step 5 promotion and play offs between step 4 clubs finishing bottom and step 5 clubs (ppg rears it's ugly head again) finishing 3rd in their respective leagues and – like me – you lose the will to live! But – so we are assured – the net result will that perfect pyramid once the 8th league settles in at step 4. If we go up, I suspect we would be in the Isthmian Premier. Sides going up from the South Central and North divisions – hmmm, not so sure. You can see those sideways moves happening, for example, to Maldon & Tiptree who are doing very well in Isthmian North and, I bet, end up in the Southern League Premier Central with the likes of Leiston, Lowestoft and Needham Market. We shall see!

Kath Ward, one of our regular followers over many years asked me last Saturday if these two dodgy characters looked familiar, in particular the one on the right. Indeed they did. Micky Crowe on the right with Chris Hamshare, two stalwarts going back to the late 70s, early 80s. Most enjoyable chinwag ensued.

Ramsgate under first half pressure here a week ago. 19

HASTINGS UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB POLICIES

Customer Charter Full details of our Customer Charter are available at our website: www.hastingsunited.com. These include our policy on ticket and pricing, abandoned matches and our involvement in the Hastings Community.

Health & Safety Hastings United Football Club takes seriously your health and safety during your visit to the Pilot Field.

The Club Believes Customer Care starts on the inside, with a good team of staff and work ethic. Most of our staff are volunteers but The Club expect our staff to always do their best.

Please note that the officers and stewards of Hastings United Football Club will enforce Ground Regulations. A copy of these Regulations is posted at the entrance to each turnstile and within the ground on the wall next to the food bar.

Our staff should remain courteous even in difficult situations. The Club and its staff know they are offering a service and that they would like every customer to return.

Please note that the following are offences under the Football (Offences) Act 1991, as amended: the throwing of any object within the ground without lawful authority or excuse, the chanting of anything of an indecent or racist nature: the entry onto the playing area or any adjacent area to which spectators are not generally admitted without lawful authority or excuse.

We believe that people come first when offering a service.

Under the Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol etc.) Act 1985, the following are offences for which a person can be arrested by a police officer: attempting to enter the ground or being inside the ground whilst drunk: being in possession of any intoxicating liquor, or bottle, can or other portable container which could cause damage or personal injury when entering the ground.

We expect our staff to be friendly and helpful and to know their job or be able to call upon someone who is able to respond to the needs of our customers. We expect our staff to give their full attention to a customer in any situation that arises.

In Addition We expect our staff and volunteers to care about their job as this will ensure they care about our customers. We expect our staff and volunteers to treat every customer as they would like to be treated themselves. We in return expect our customers to treat our volunteers and staff with respect and The Club will not tolerate any physical or verbal abused aimed at them.

LEAGUE NEWS From: Ian Townsend

BLUE ATHLETIC VCD Athletic have announced the return to the club of goalkeeper Nick Blue, who was last seen in the Isthmian League keeping goal for Cray Wanderers as they stormed to the South East Division title last season. Nick was an enormous part of Wands title success, keeping fifteen clean sheets in forty appearances and delivering a number of man of the match performances. He was also a big part of their success over previous seasons, as he had been a mainstay of their squad for a number of years. He left the club in the summer to sign for Glebe in the Southern Counties East Football League, but now returns to our fold as he signs for VCD - where he was part of the squad that won the North Division in 13-14.

TANNERS SIGN HEATH HITMAN Leatherhead have signed Haywards Heath Town's man mountain striker Melford Simpson, and gave him his debut in the recent home defeat against Bognor Regis Town. He started the match and played for fifty-six minutes before being replaced by Misha Djmaili. Simpson seems to have been attached to Hanbury Park by bungee rope for the last few years. He first joined them when they were vying for promotion from the Southern Combination Football League, and was instrumental in a title win which was taken from them when it was discovered that the player had inadvertently not paid his part of a team fine from a former club, and was thus technically suspended. That paperwork error saw Heath deducted points which instead promoted second place Shoreham, but they - and Simpson - were back the following year to secure promotion once more. He has left and returned twice more since then, and has made thirteen appearances this season after making a fourth Hanbury Park debut in September. He previously played for Shoreham, in Wales for Connah's Quay Nomads, and for Fisher, Aylesbury United, Uxbridge and Hayes and Yeading United, amongst others.

BRICKIES SIGN A DART Sittingbourne manager Chris Lynch has announced the capture of Dartford midfielder Cameron Brodie on loan. Brodie came through the Darts Academy and was rewarded for his progress by getting his first senior contract in the summer. He should be eligible for their match against Three Bridges.

A PAIR OF HILLIANS Burgess Hill Town have announced two new signings, as they prepare to travel to Herne Bay this afternoon. First in is midfielder Kevin Moreno-Gomez, who joins the club from Sutton United. He is joined by another midfielder, Jordi Ndozid, who moves over from Metropolitan Police on a dual-registration deal. According to the website of the boys in blue, he's made five appearances this season. We believe he is a former England Schoolboys International (unless there are two footballers with the same name, as we can't find any photographs to prove this!), and he started life in the Charlton Athletic Academy, before becoming part of Met's Under-23 side.

A RAMS TRIO Ramsgate have announced three signings. The first is Charlie Meade. Charlie is a forward (although Dover describe him as a midfielder, so he must be rather versatile), and a former junior Ram, who left the club to become part of the Maidstone United and Dover Athletic Academies. Charlie is joined by Phil Starkey, who moves over from Herne Bay. Defender Phil has made ten appearances for Bay this season, but hasn't started since mid-November. He previously played for Folkestone Invicta - leaving the club at the end of the 2016-17 season, after joining them from Maidstone United, and then going back last season, when he made twenty two appearances. He also previously turned out for Hornchurch (when they still had their AFC), Tonbridge Angels, Margate, Dover Athletic, Ebbsfleet United and Braintree Town. The last member of the trio is defender Will Thomas, who moves over from Canterbury City. You may remember defender will from his time at Hythe Town, Ashford United and East Grinstead Town.
