MANAGER’S NOTES

Chris Agutter

Good afternoon everyone. A warm welcome to the Ashford United board members, Club officials, management and players to the Pilot Field today ..... from all at HUFC we wish you a safe journey to and from our town. On a more specific note I understand Ashford United’s Manager Tommy Warrrilow has been unwell of late ..... so from all the staff and players at HUFC we hope you are okay and also hope to welcome you in the opposing dugout today.

I’m delighted that for the first time in a LONG time we are able to boast a pretty much full strength squad ...

Today we aim to make it 12 wins from a possible 13 at home ..... we pretty much always score and very rarely concede meaning we are never going to be far away from picking up the next 3 points ..... HOWEVER, we will have to bring the best version of ourselves today against what’ll be a challenging opponent ..... a team well drilled in playing their midfield diamond with a lot of physicality and quality ..... today will be tough. I’m delighted that for the first time in a LONG time we are able to boast a pretty much full strength squad ..... particularly good news is that our midfield maestro Adam Lovatt is back and will go straight into today’s starting lineup ..... the boy is a beast and has been key to this seasons title challenge so to welcome him back after missing the last 5 weeks is very pleasing news indeed. Lastly ..... I want to say a massive thank you to the supporters that sung us over the line Tuesday night ..... you guys and Whitehawk’s support created a bloody brilliant atmosphere which made a competitive game on the pitch even more exciting as a spectacle ..... THANK YOU from all the staff and players .... you are our 12th man ... COYU’s!

LEAGUE NEWS From: Ian Townsend

A NEW HILLIANS DUO

BETVICTOR Isthmian League Division One South East

SEASON RECORDS @ 5 FEBRUARY 2020

Burgess Hill Town have announced the signing of a goalkeeper and a defender - the first from Brighton & Hove Albion, the second from Worthing. Goalkeeper Fynn Talley has made five appearances for the Seagulls U18’s side this season - indeed he was in goal against Manchester City U18's in the Quarter-Final of the Premier League Cup just over a week ago - after joining the club from Arsenal in July 2018. He started his football career as a youngster at Worthing Town, and has been part of the England U16 squad.

4th January 2020 Burgess Hill Town 0-7 Ashford Utd

Reggie Ward comes in from Worthing. Part of the Sussex U18's Representative Squad last month - managed, co-incidentally by Hillians boss Jay Lovett - Reggie made his Hillians debut from the bench at the end of January as they defeated Chichester City in the Velocity Trophy.

17th August 2019 Burgess Hill Town 7-2 Hythe Town

Sittingbourne have announced the return of former loan striker Roman Campbell to Woodstock Park - and this time he's signed a permanent deal after being released by Gillingham.

17th September 2019 Phoenix Sports 6-3 East Grinstead

Roman has made a number of Isthmian loan moves over the past year. He has most recently been at Ramsgate, making four appearances without finding the net, and he previously made two appearances for Enfield Town and spent a little time at Cheshunt. His previous period with the Brickies saw him score at a prolific rate, as he fired home five goals in six matches during August and September. He also spent some time on loan with the club last season, scoring seven goals in fifteen matches, and his return has been met with delight by their supporters on social media.

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY! We've got the start and end dates for the 2020-21 season. Premier Division League games start Saturday 8th August. North/South East and South Central Division League games will start on Saturday 15th August. There is a possibility that the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round, which might involve some of our Step Four clubs, will kick-off on Saturday 8th - but we are not yet in a position to confirm this. The season will end on Saturday 24th April.

GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart A light hearted – and on many occasions, anything but light hearted, look at life here in what is now known as the BetVictor Isthmian League's South Eastern Division. My rants and raves are not connected with the club in any way. Wow. I don't know what is worse / better. Being at a big game with all the tension in front of you, or, with the tech now available on your phone thousands of miles away, hitting the refresh key time and time again. Here in the Philippines I rely 100% on my phone, Footballwebpages, Twitter, Facebook and a digital subscription to the Non League Paper. What would I have done 20 plus years ago when a pocket of change and a search for the nearest phone box after a game was the only way to get results of other games etc etc? I am ancient enough to remember getting my first phone installed - technology has moved on just a bit eh? I keep reading that the team isn't quite in it's best form of late. And I constantly compare the U's with Cray Wanderers last season. They lurched here and there but kept picking up points which is what we've been doing. Several games this season have yielded points we wouldn't have picked up last season. It's all about the result. 3 points. And in Tuesday's case, a big single point at Whitehawk, the best side I've seen United up against this season. And the 3 points from the VCD game a week ago - another big result. The big big difference of course is that Wanderers won the division - the scrap for this season's title is still a long way from being decided. Sittingbourne did us no favours Tuesday night, Cray Valley are scoring goals for fun, Whitehawk have plenty to say and keep an eye on Herne Bay who seemed to be on the verge of folding last season only to revive hugely this time around. 16

The perils of following from afar. FWPages got carried away and at one stage last Saturday showed VCD had scored two in a minute to go 3-2 up!

AND TODAY Ashford are here, hot on our tail 4 points behind and the only side to beat us this season. Nearly 2 months since a frustrating 1-0 defeat at Homelands, one of those afternoons. Since Ashford came back up to step 4 football we've had a pretty even record of results with them having the better of things lately. Those two massive games here last season - 910 here for the 2-2 draw and 1,123 (biggest Bostik SE gate of 2018-19) for the damp squib, as it turned out, play-off semi-final that Ashford won with a late late penalty.

Damp squib it was too thanks to the FA pointed hats and the step 4 play off farce. Neither of us would have gone up and all that can be said about last season's play offs is that they were at least decided on the pitch and not in an FA boffin's spreadsheet. I remain implacably opposed to play offs but as I said, at least they were decided in the proper way. All the more so given Horsham had finished runners up. Today is massive. The week is massive and Tuesday's point at Whitehawk was a good

result. Today is on a par with 1991-92 when Weymouth brought 5 coaches here and 1200 saw Hastings Town win 2-0. January 2002 saw consecutive Saturdays at Dorchester and Grantham - fixtures on a par with Whitehawk and Ashford 18 years later. Both finished 1-1. 605 at Dorchester and 635 a week later at South Kesteven. Combined mileage around 660. Yea - Hastings Ashford and England rugby up at Murrayfield. Massive.

Dorchester away January 2002. Avenue Stadium. Top ground. Paul Jones got our goal in that 1-1 draw. Dorchester currently having a grim season well adrift at the bottom of Southern Premier South.

PROPER? Been a lot of waffle lately about the FA Cup and how devalued it's become. As illustrated by Liverpool's replay with Shrewsbury. No doubt about it, it is not what it used to be. But - can't recall where I read it - rounds 1 onwards were disparagingly referred to as the "Proper rounds". Totally blanking the achievements of semi pro clubs battling their way through "Qualifying rounds"! Round 1 of the FA Cup is in August! That's when the competition starts and Round 1 sounds pretty appropriate eh! Semi-pro clubs merge all the time. None more than this lot! Remember we played Rushden & Diamonds back in the Southern Premier? They were a result of Rushden Town and Irthlingborough Diamonds merging. Several merges later the whole lot has ended up back at the stadium where Rushden Town played which was deemed unsuitable for Southern League Midland Division football in the early 90s!

Simon Stoddart UPS AND DOWNS Trying to work out all the permutations of promotion and relegation saw me resort to a time tested process, a method that still has something to offer in these digital HD days. Pen and paper. And I reproduce my scribblings below as I knocked them out. Hopefully they will make sense. Step 1 - the National League. Relegates 4 teams to National South and North who each promote 2 which = 4 down, 4 up. Each of those 3 divisions 24 clubs each. Step 2 - National South and North relegate 2 clubs each to step 3. Step 3 (Southern Central and South, Northern and Isthmian Premier) promotes 2 clubs from each division = 4 down and 8 up. That gets National South and North up to 24 clubs. The Super Play off nonsense of last season is rightly scrapped. Step 3 will relegate the bottom 2 from each division PLUS two third from bottom clubs. Those 2 places will be decided on that appalling points per game equation. Step 4 - this is where we and Ashford play - promotes title winners and play off winners. Which = 10 clubs down, 14 up. Play off farce of last season rightly scrubbed. Step 4 next season will have an extra division of 20 clubs which will see that pyramid structure the FA has been after. It'll be a north based league run almost certainly by the Northern Premier. To create that additional division - step 5 will promote 24 clubs by various means. When all the numbers are crunched you end up with an eighth step 4 division of 20 teams. Those pointed hats at FA HQ can't stop coming up with nonsense as you would expect. Sure enough they've come up with another way of ruining that natural progression of promotion and relegation. All the sides finishing bottom of their respective step 4 league - as it stands, East Grinstead in Isthmian SE for example - will get a home play off against a step 5 side to decide who stays up, goes down ......... Ludicrous. Anyway - read my ups and down blurb in context of my hand written chart, shown below, and hopefully it will make more sense. The additional eighth step 4 division is shown in broken lines.

Old fashioned pen and paper but hopefully can be consulted in conjunction with my ups and downs comments. The division in broken lines bottom right represents the new eighth league at step 4 that kicks off next season. 18

ASHFORD UNITED FC A HISTORY SNAPSHOT

Ashford United Football Club was formed in 1891 with some varying degrees of success until the team ceased in 1928. In April 1930, Sir Charles Igglesden presided over a meeting to form a senior football club in Ashford and subsequently applied to compete in the Kent League, FA Cup and Kent Senior Cup. It was around then that Ashford Town came into existence, rather than Ashford United, and acquired its nickname of ‘The Nuts & Bolts’ as many of the members were from the ranks of the engineers in the railway works. It was cup football that was to provide the greatest success for Town, reaching the first round proper of the FA Cup as a Kent League side in 1959/60, losing 1-0 to Crystal Palace. In the 1960’s, Town reached the first round of the FA Cup on four occasions, falling to league opposition each time. Further honours arrived with success in the Kent Senior Cup in 1959 and 1963. In 1972/73, Town reached the semi-finals of the FA Trophy. During the 1990’s, manager Neil Cugley produced an entertaining and successful side. Highlights included a first round FA Cup match with Fulham, witnessed by a capacity crowd of 3,300 at Homelands with Sky TV highlights. The result was an impressive 2-2 draw; the replay at Craven Cottage saw the game into extra-time with Town eventually losing 5-3. In 1996/97, Ashford drew Watford away in the secondround, losing 5-0. 20

In 2009/10, following a Boardroom fall-out, the club’s future was put in the balance following the winding up of Ashford Town Football Club but now, under the new name of Ashford United, the club continues to progress. The 'new' United was formed in 2011, resurrecting a name used by the town's football club around the advent of the twentieth century and, in the truest form, represents a 'phoenix club', rising from the ashes of financial ruin and being run by the Crosbie family with the help of members of the local community. Ashford United are currently in the Bostik League South Division. After finishing second in two consecutive seasons, ultimately losing out to Whyteleafe and Phoenix Sports respectively The 2016-17 season finally brought success for AUFC who became league champions earning their place for promotion into the Bostik League. This was a much deserved reward for the hard work of the manager and the playing team and of course the team involved in the running of the football club and all it’s very loyal supporters. Ashford United’s Management Team consists of Tommy Warrilow and Alex O’Brien, Coach Louis Dean and Physio Ben Coles.

Ashford United’s Homelands Stadium - Capacity 3,200 (500 Seated)

ASHFORD UTD MANAGER TOMMY WARRILOW

Ashford United Football Club Tommy spent seven years as manager of Tonbridge Angels, winning promotion from the Ryman Premier League before the club spent three years in the Conference South. He left at the end of the 2013-2014 season following relegation back to Step 3 and spent time as chief scout at Ebbsfleet United before returning to the dugout as manager of Cray Wanderers. Warrilow masterminded a minor miracle at Cray, taking over in January 2015 and producing a ten game win streak at the end of the season which saw the Wands retain their Ryman North status.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS WITH ASHFORD UNITED FC As the closest of our ‘out of county’ opponents, Ashford sides have been regular opponents since we, as then Hastings & St. Leonards, first met Ashford Railway Works F.C. in an away friendly over ninety-five years ago, played on Saturday, 2nd December, 1922 – when we lost 1-8. Subsequently, the various forms of both clubs met regularly up until Ashford left the Ryman Isthmian League in 2010. The present club was formed by former members of the previous organisation and in 2011 became founder members of the Kent Invicta League, however, we have not met competively until their promotion into this division for in the 2017/18 season; however, we did send a youth side for a pre-season friendly on Wednesday, 10th August, 2011 which we lost 1-4. In their first season back, 2017/18 we met twice :-

LEAGUE NEWS A PAIR OF CANNONS From: Ian Townsend

LILYWHITES BRING IN A DUO Faversham came within a whisker of defeating Whitehawk at the Enclosed Ground on Saturday 25th January - two added time goals earning the hosts a draw; but it wasn't all bed news as the Lilywhites gave a debut to two new signings. Aaron Ibe, who moved over from Staines Town, went straight into the first eleven. The centre-back, who has made twenty appearances for the Swans this season, scoring once, has - despite his tender age - spent time at Rotherham United, Millwall, Crystal Palace, and Fulham prior to joining the Swans. Isiaq Adebayo moved over from fellow South East club Whyteleafe, and made a secondhalf debut as a substitute. He'd made four appearances for Leafe, three as a substitute, this season, and previously played for Sittingbourne and South Park.

30

Hythe Town, who have been in excellent form of late, have strengthened their squad for a tilt at the playoffs by bringing in midfielder Darren Oldaker and striker Tom Murphy. Darren is a former QPR Youth player who signed for Gillingham at the end of his time at Loftus Road. He spent four years with the Gills, making twenty-one appearances, but left the club at the end of last season and has been with Billericay Town during this campaign. He will be no stranger to the Reachfields faithful as he spent some time on loan there in 201718, making fourteen appearances and scoring five goals. Tom moves down from Premier Division Cray Wanderers. He previously turned out for Gillingham, Margate, Maidstone United, Tonbridge Angels, Farnborough, Lewes and Dartford, joining the Wands in the summer. He's made twenty-seven appearances for Cray this season, scoring seven goals, including two in a five-nil FA Cup thrashing of his new club back in September. Hopefully his new fans can forgive him for that!
