Sittingbourne at home last Saturday was fantastic to see yet another strong crowd, yes it dropped from the amazing 1,189 who turned up for the Ashford United game but to see 640 people turn up to The Pilot Field keeps us as the best supported club in East Sussex. How far have we come, how amazing that even after what many would consider a disappointing performance we deliver another crowd head and shoulders above the rest! This is a huge credit to the atmosphere being produced by you, the supporters and we need to keep this up for Chris and the lads for this run in!

A big shout out to our travelling supporters who sung, supported and got behind the lads in what could’ve been a banana skin sort of fixture. The faithful behind the goal with your shirts off, I hope you all haven’t got the flu and are with us today!!! It’s not just those guys and girls though, young and old this club is firmly becoming a family destination and it’s beautiful to see the generations turning up with smiles on their faces looking forward to a great afternoon of entertainment.

GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart A light hearted â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and on many occasions, anything but light hearted, look at life here in what is now known as the BetVictor Isthmian League's South Eastern Division. My rants and raves are not connected with the club in any way.

RECENT RESULTS The big results of the last week were Chichester winning 3-2 at Ashford on Saturday in one of the few Isthmian SE games to go ahead and United's 3-1 win at Burgess Hill on Tuesday night. Early indications are that the U's are emerging nicely from a difficult, difficult February. Ashford got swift revenge for their home defeat by Chichester on Tuesday when they won by 3-2 in the return fixture. It's baffling. Ashford have scored hatfulls of goals but have conceded a fair few too and I still scratch my head wondering how we failed to score in both games against them. Whatever, Tuesday's result was just the job. Well played fellas. The Burgess Hill game kicked off at 7.30 pm as opposed to the usual 7.45 pm start we are so used to. This has been the case for years and is apparently due to local residents being inconvenienced by the floodlights. I do struggle to understand what positive difference to this problem (Is it REALLY a problem) there is by kicking off 15 minutes earlier. 16

So then, next season sees a new version of Bury. The death throes of the first version are still being dragged out in court which is all very sad but Bury AFC will, I'm sure, be a welcome addition to step 6 of the semi professional game, a couple of levels below where we play. The new look Bury already has around 10,000 followers on Twitter and it's progress will be followed by many. North West Counties League Division 1 is where they will start next season and I suspect they will soon be up in the Northern Premier before too long. If the likes of Aldershot and AFC Wimbledon are anything to go by in seasons past, you can surely expect backto-back promotions immediately. The clubs they visit will relish the big crowds and the big paydays. 500 away supporters turning up at clubs that get by on gates of under 100 - what a massive occasion Bury AFC in town will be next season up there in Lancashire.

There you go, that groundshare for Bury AFC won't be too difficult, eh?

Gigg Lane is where they played in their EFL days. It's their intention to get back there eventually but for now they have a groundshare arrangement in place with Radcliffe who are currently a Northern Premier outfit at step 3. And just a quarter of an hour away from Gigg Lane which will be no problem for AFC followers next season. Look at some groundshares and the travelling involved. I think one of the most difficult ones was Truro City playing home games at Torquay a season or two ago. Brighton shared with Gillingham all those years back after the Goldstone disappeared under a retail park. Cray Wanderers, Gloucester City, Newport AFC, Worcester City - all been through that. Hopefully, Bury AFC will soon return to their rightful home but as a temporary measure, that groundshare at Radcliffe looks as good as it gets.

HEADING NO MORE It's inevitable. One of the major elements of football is on it's way out. It all surfaced with the death of Jeff Astle back in 2002 at just 59. Us old uns remember him in his West Brom days, a great English centre-forward. I recall watching the 1968 FA Cup Final between West Brom and Everton just a few weeks after Everton had emphatically won their Division One game, 6-2 (Cor, remember that? Football League Division One?). Everton went to Wembley hot favourites to win the FA Cup only for Astle to get the only goal of the game for West Brom. Jeeeez - getting on for 52 years ago. And the FA Cup Final was THE last game of the season, it kicked off at 3pm on a Saturday, the semi-finals had been played at neutral venues (None of this Wembley nonsense we have now) - the days when the FA Cup really meant something. But I digress. Astle was one of the first

footballers to become an acknowledged casualty of the sport - specifically heading. Balls in those days were leather and when they got wet and heavy, the impact of heading must have taken it's toll. This has become a pressing issue as more players of that era are diagnosed with heading related illnesses. And the FA has taken the not unexpected step of banning heading for kids under 11 in training sessions. It's all rather vague at the moment and sure enough, the FA has managed to put together some weird and wonderful guidelines. Under 11s - no heading in training sessions, Under 12s - one training session a month will include heading (up to a maximum of 5 headers), Under 13s - one session a week etc etc. Whatever - this is just the start of seeing some big changes in how the game is played. Rugby Union has been dealing with player welfare more emphatically than football which is now only now, bear in mind Jeff Astle died in 2002 having to do the same.

ANGELS IN TROUBLE Our old rivals Tonbridge Angels currently do their thing in National South after going up last season from the Isthmian Premier via the convoluted Super Play Off equation dreamt up by the FA. The step up from Isthmian Premier to National South is a big one I'm told and Tonbridge have been working their socks off to retain their step 2 status. But all the horrendous weather of late has made such a mess of their pitch that they are looking at having to play home fixtures elsewhere with a huge impact on club finances. In an ideal world they will sort their problems out and keep their National South status AND even better, provide opposition for us twice a season again. All the best to The Angels.

THE RETURN OF HARRY STANNARD Good to see you again, Harry. Last time I saw him in a United shirt was after that desperately disappointing Play-Off semi-final penalties defeat at Dorking Wanderers at the end of the 2016-2017 season. He ended up at Premier Division Margate with Frannie Collin and Matt Bodkin and is these days to be found at Whitstable. And all being well he will be here today. Good good player, it was a shame we couldn't hang onto him. 18

OAKS BRING IN DARTS STRIKER Sevenoaks Town have announced the dual registration signing of Dartford striker Andy Pugh. Pugh started this season on a dual registration deal with East Thurrock United, playing five matches and scoring three goals. That compares well with his record for the Darts, where by the start of this season he had scored a goal every three matches on average. Perhaps

would have got more, however he missed almost the entirety of last season after a horrific double-fracture of his leg in a preseason friendly against Colchester United an injury so severe that Dartford fans even organised a benefit for him. He began his career at Gillingham, and has played for a number of current Isthmian League clubs, including Folkestone Invicta, Histon, and Grays Athletic- although they weren't all in our league when he pulled on their shirts. He moved to the Darts, initially on loan, from Cambridge United - signing permanently at Princes Park when Cambridge released him after winning promotion back to the Football League via the play-offs. 19

TODAY’S VISITORS

The first recorded football match took place in the town during October 1885 when, under the name “Whitstable United”, a team played Whitstable College. Earliest use of the name “Whitstable Town” can be traced to the following season (1886-87) when matches were played were played on a Friday at “Mr. Saddleton’s field” – an area of ground near the railway station. The use of the club’s current Belmont ground began in January 1888 with a friendly game against Herne Bay. There was a change in name briefly to “Whitstable Swifts” in 1893 but reverted to “Whitstable Town” just two years later. Whitstable Town played their first competitive game in 1897 – a Kent Junior Cup match that resulted in a 7-1 defeat by Dover Star FC. Shortly after this, the club joined the “East Kent League” and later played in both the “New Brompton” and “Faversham & District” Leagues. The club folded in 1904 only to be reformed in 1908. In 1908-09 Whitstable Town joined the Kent League Division 2 and achieved a respectable fourth place in their first season. Two teams were also entered in the Thanet League and they were both successful in lifting both the first and second division titles. The first FA Cup campaign came in 1910. A 3-2 victory over Folkestone preceded a defeat by Dartford in front of a crowd of estimated at 2,150. Following the First World War, Town rejoined the Kent League and remained in the competition until the outbreak of World War II. The club won the Division 2 title in 192728 and 1933-34. However, the key success came in 1928-29 when the team lifted the Kent Amateur Cup (now superseded by the Kent Senior Trophy). After one season in the New Brompton League following the Second World War, Whitstable returned to Kent League in 1947-48 (also playing in the K Division of the New Brompton League.) Success came to the club as they won the Division 2 title in the 1949-50 season and gained promotion to the First Division until the League disbanded in 1959. These were sometimes considered the glory years as Whitstable temporarily became a professional club but the problems of competing with much wealthier clubs proved difficult and put considerable pressure on the clubs finances. The loss of the Kent League came as a hammer blow. Wealthier clubs moved onward and upward to the

more prestigious Southern League leaving behind a small band of teams fighting for survival. Town joined the Aetolian League briefly. Gone were the days of the money-spinning East Kent derby games against the likes of Folkestone, Dover, Sittingbourne and Margate. Matches against far off London-based sides were no substitute and, inevitably, the 1960’s became a period of financial problems and decay. The end of the 1959-60 season saw Whitstable bottom of the Aetolian League and a decision was taken to drop into the Kent Amateur League for a short period – an all time low for a senior side with such a rich history – We were champions in 1960-61 and were as runners up in the Kent Amateur Cup.. At the end of the 196162 season a decision was taken to enter the Seanglian League for the following season but this was a disaster as Whitstable mixed with the second string of a number of larger local clubs. The club then had one season back in the Aetolian League before joining the Greater London League. One piece of success was that the Town finished runners up in the Greater London League Group B Cup in 1965-66 losing the final 3-1 against Crittall Athletic in the final staged at Cray Wanderers FC. The Kent League was reformed in 1967 and Town rejoined immediately. However, this was not the Kent League of the “heady” 1930s and 1950s. Populated by a large number of reserve sides from Southern League Clubs, there was little to appeal to supporters… but it was a start. Gradually, former Kent League clubs began to return. Some like Whitstable had wandered various leagues over the years. Others had encountered financial problems in the Southern League. At last, the League Management Committee was in a position to remove reserve sides from the competition and impose strict conditions governing grounds and facilities. East Kent derby matches became a reality once more – against Ramsgate, Canterbury City, Folkestone, Deal, Faversham Town, Chatham and, of course, our oldest and nearest rivals, Herne Bay. The club responded – building a club house and attempting to restore the Belmont to its former glory on limited funds. The “Town” celebrated its centenary in 1985-86 in a healthier state and the occasion was marked by games against Charlton Athletic and Crystal Palace. Both matches attracted large crowds to the Belmont. There were many developments that followed the appointment of Joe Brownett as chairman in the late 1980’s and sponsorship by D&J Tyres of Herne Bay. Since then, dressing rooms have been refurbished, the club house re-fitted, floodlights erected, a new snack bar created, committee rooms extended, the pitch levelled and a drainage system installed.

Success on the pitch had been elusive since the re-formation of the Kent League. Despite a regular “top 10” position, the best league finishes had been two “third place” spots. Cup competitions yielded greater success but there has been heartache as well…. “Runners up” in Kent League Cup twice and the Kent Senior Trophy on three occasions. The only major reward came in 1979-80 – a 4-3 victory over Chatham to lift the Kent League Cup at the Bull Ground at Sittingbourne. Trailing 2-0 and 3-1 in the final, the team recovered to score two late goals and an “extra time” winner. The club achieved it best FA Vase run during 1996-97. Despite being drawn away from home in virtually every round, Whitstable reached the last 16…just 3 matches from an appearance at Wembley in this nationwide competition. With everyone praying for a home draw, luck deserted us…North Ferriby United (near Hull) … away. A tight 1-0 defeat ended the dream on Humberside. A few years ago in March 1989, the club and one of its most popular players (Gerry Allan) received coverage in the national press following one of the quickest goals in football history – timed at just over 4 seconds. From the kick off, the ball was rolled forward and Gerry attempted to lob the ball over the goalkeeper from the half way line. A slight miscue caused the ball to drop short but it skidded on the damp surface and passed under the goalkeeper’s body. Everyone dived for the Guinness book of records but it seems that there have been slightly quicker strikes. Had Gerry made a clean connection, it might have been the fastest goal of all time! Towns longest serving chairman Joe Brownett stepped aside at the end of 2004-05 season when supporter Tony Rouse took over the chair. 2006-07 marked the best season in the club’s history. Under player manager Marc Seager’s leadership the team won the Kent League and the Kent Senior Trophy. A treble was just missed out on the last day of the season as we ended up as runners-up in the Kent League Cup. We also had a good run in the FA Cup ending with a narrow home defeat against Margate in front of 1,144 people. The championship brought about the long awaited promotion to the Ryman League. The first year in the Ryman League (2007-2008) started shakily but an excellent end to the season brought us into mid table and respectability with chairman Tony Rouse stepping aside and Joe Brownett taking the reins as chairman once again. After a difficult start to the second season it was a mirror image of the previous year as we found ourselves again in the lower reaches of mid table. The following five seasons saw a number of managerial changes with the side always providing a sprint finish to the season to ensure survival.

WHITSTABLE TOWN FC Ex-referee Gary Johnson became chairman at the start of the 2012-13 season. Nicky Southall led the team to the last 32 of the FA Trophy in 2013-14, including memorable wins at Carshalton Athletic and Hendon before losing 2-1 to Ebbsfleet United in front of 742 supporters at the Belmont Ground. Jim and Danny Ward took over as the management team from Nicky Southall at the start of the 2014-15 season and produced the club’s best position in the league, finishing in eighth place. The Wards moved back to manage Ramsgate after just one year and the whole of the season 2015-16 was one of constant change with managers and players coming and going. Chairman Gary Johnson then stepped down and Joe Brownett once again was the safe pair of hands to settle the club down. Scott Porter was appointed manager in an attempt to avoid relegation, but despite some encouraging results it was not to be and the club dropped to the Southern Counties East Football League. The club regained stability off the pitch and Joe and Scott continued in their respective roles and a 5th place finish was achieved in 2016-17. The following season ended successfully with the team going on an incredible four month unbeaten run that brought two cup final wins, defeating Sheppey United in the Kent Senior Trophy and Tunbridge Wells in the SCEFL Challenge Cup. The main objective of promotion back into the Bostik (Isthmian) League was also achieved, as finishing runners-up to Sevenoaks Town was enough to restore Step 4 football to the Belmont. During the 18-19 season, both chairman Joe Brownett and manager Scott Porter announced that they would be standing down from their roles at the end of that season, although both would continue at the club in alternative positions. The team finished in a respectable 12th place to consolidate its status back at Step 4. The club had set up a football academy at the start of the 17-18 season and had begun to work closely with Whitstable Town Junior Football Club to offer more opportunities for young players. This relationship grew stronger and led to the two clubs joining together in June 2019 under a new chairman, Steve Clayton, who had held that position in the junior club. The ownership of the senior club was formally transferred from the unincorporated members club to a new company, limited by guarantee, on 1st June 2019, with a number of new officers being appointed. On the field, former Whitstable Town player and Ramsgate manager, Lloyd Blackman was appointed the new manager and a reserves team was reintroduced into the Kent County League. Together with the growing football academy and youth section, a clear pathway had been established for young players in the town.

NEW BOOK BY TIM QUELCH This book is about my nostalgic return to my East Sussex roots, when I avidly followed Hastings United, Brighton & Hove Albion and Sussex County Cricket Club. It contains vivid memories of past games of triumph or woe, such as: Hastings United’s brave FA Cup tussles with Norwich City and Sheffield Wednesday in the 50s; Brighton & Hove Albion’s defiant 3-3 FA Cup draw with English champions, Burnley, in the Goldstone mud of January 1961; Hastings United’s incredible rise from the brink of oblivion in 1962, becoming one of the best non-League teams in England by April 1964; Brighton’s Division Four title-winning victory at a packed, raucous Goldstone Ground in April 1965; John Snow’s and Tony Buss’s brilliant demolition of mighty world champions, West Indies, at Hove in June 1966, with Sussex winning by nine wickets well within two days; Ted Dexter’s ferocious, valedictory double century against Kent at Hastings in July 1968. In addition there are striking portraits of other past heroes, including Sussex stalwart pace bowler, Ian Thomson, Brighton’s feisty midfielder, Jimmy Collins and their sharpshooters, Bill Curry, Kit Napier and Willie Irvine, plus Hastings favourites, Gordon Burden, a winger with scorching pace and an enormous heart, and equally popular Kevin Barry, uncle of Gareth, a bustling centre forward of pace and power, also a redoubtable centre half. The story is set against a backcloth of rock ‘n’ roll music in a rapidly changing Britain. Copies are currently available in the Hastings United club shop, on-line and in Waterstones. PREVIOUS MEETINGS WITH WHITSTABLE TOWN FC Meetings between the sides date back to when we were Hastings Town and playing at “The Firs” where we first met in a pre-1980/81 season game which we won 3-1. Eleven seasons later we went to the Belmont on Saturday, 27th July, 1991 for another pre-season match where a Danny Whyman goal secured us a 1-1 draw. Whitstable first played us here on Tuesday, 15th February, 1994 when they progressed in a Kent Midweek League Cup second round tie which they won 3-1, before a crowd of just 47 who saw Nick Hall net our goal. Almost a decade then elapsed until our next meeting as we visited them three times for pre-season matches in 2003 (won 2-1), 2004 (lost 0-4) and 2009 (drew 2-2). We renewed acquaintances with the Oystermen in 2013/14 after their earlier promotion into the Ryman Isthmian League. Most recent past results are shown below. The match we played at Whitstable Town last December resulted in a U’s win 3-1, details can be found on the centre page spread.

Back in November we announced Michael Aziaya's move to Romford from Ramsgate, but now he's back in the South East Division with VCD Athletic, and was on the bench for their defeat at Sevenoaks Town. He made four appearances for Romford - one of eighty-eight players they've used so far this season. He previously played at Eastbourne Borough and Dartford, but will be better known to Isthmian League watchers from his time at Hastings United and Carshalton Athletic - he was a big part of the Robins squad that earned promotion from the South Division in 2017-18. He made twelve appearances for the Rams, the last against Cray Valley PM on November 9th, starting the campaign at Three Bridges.

A BAY RETURN FOR STEVENSON Herne Bay are celebrating the return to the club of midfielder Bradley Stevenson, after his departure from National League South side Chelmsford City. He made ten appearances for Bay earlier this season, scoring five goals. Bradley previously played for a number of Isthmian clubs whilst on loan from Gillingham. In 2016-17 he made three appearances for Ramsgate, and another ten for Hastings United - where he also weighed in with two goals. Early in 2018-19 he made six appearances for Cray Wanderers, scoring another three goals, and another four for Tonbridge Angels, whilst last season he made three more appearances at Pilot Field, scoring two goals, as well as six more for Margate. He left the Gills last summer, after being with the club since first signing as a youngster in 2007. He left Bay for Chelmsford in late November. BUSINESS PARTNERS

BETVICTOR ISTHMIAN LEAGUE From: Ian Townsend ‘MANAGER OF THE MONTH’ DARTS ACE HEADS TO CRAY AWARD - FEBRUARY 2020 Not content with winning six games in a row and our Manager of the Month Award, Cray Valley PM boss Kevin Watson has decided to celebrate by going out and adding a Dartford legend to his squad. Arriving at the Badgers Sports Ground is midfielder Lee Noble, veteran of almost 12 years at Princes Park, during which he's made almost five hundred appearances at National League and National League South level. The former Brentwood Town youth player scored the winning goal in the Play-off Final as the Darts won promotion to the National League in 2012, and you can watch it online, and you should, as it's a thing of beauty.

GOLDEN GLOVES AWARD FEBRUARY 2020 Ashford United add our goalkeeping prize to their ‘Performance of the Month’ trophy. Six matches and only four goals conceded gives them victory with only 0.67 goals a game conceded. With clean sheets against East Grinstead Town, Sittingbourne, Hastings United and Guernsey, congratulations go to the incomparable Sam Mott and his exceptional defence!

HORNETS WIN 'GROUNDTASTIC' AWARD Two years ago Aveley's Parkside Stadium won the equivalent of a Non-League Oscar, as it was crowned 'Best New Non-League Ground' by the fine folks at Groundtastic, a magazine much loved by groundhoppers and all those with a love of stadium design and architecture - and many in between. Well we're able to once again celebrate an Isthmian success, as Horsham FC's Camping World Community Stadium has just won the award for 2020!

South East Division Cray Valley PM boss Kevin Watson had a rival for this award, and once more with two clubs having the same number of average points per game it came right down to goal difference, which clinched it for the Millers boss. With four matches and four victories, Cray Valley are not just firm favourites to qualify for the play-offs, they are still firmly in the race for automatic promotion too. Congratulations to Kevin and to all at the Badgers Sports Ground.

HILLIANS BRING IN URCHINS STRIKER Burgess Hill Town recently announced the arrival of Hornchurch striker Daniel Uchechi, and gave him twenty minutes from the bench in their defeat against Hastings United last Tuesday evening. Daniel has been with the Urchins since the summer, but is much travelled and has been with clubs at a much higher level. He started his career at Charlton Athletic, moved to West Ham, and whilst playing in Nigeria had loans at Leicester City and Sheffield Wednesday. He played in Scotland for Aberdeen, spent some time in Sweden, and in recent years has played for Boreham Wood, Hendon, Hampton and Richmond Borough, Cray Wanderers and South Park, before making twenty seven appearances for the Urchins this season, scoring three times. He also played international football for Nigeria at Under 20 and Under 23 level. He rejoins his former South Park manager Jay Lovett at the Green Elephants Stadium - he made seven appearances for the Sparks towards the end of last season, scoring twice.
