Photographic Memories IN THIS WEEK’S special photo issue, we pause to reflect on the year’s most memorable moments. During a time when “twerking” eclipsed coverage of the war in Syria, and our government literally stopped working over the Affordable Care Act, we wanted to tap
into the power of photographs to tell the stories and illustrate both the important and the absurd. Some images are already ingrained in our cultural memory — who could forget Wendy Davis standing for 11 hours straight in an attempt to filibuster an abortion bill in Texas? Or Jennifer Lawrence falling down on her way to the stage to claim her Academy

Award? Or, most recently, the moving pictures of mourners at Nelson Mandela’s funeral. Others are less familiar. In our Voices section, Michael Shaw, a visual journalism analyst, presents his top media photography of the year, opting for images that didn’t make a splash but tell a vital story nonetheless. A remarkable image of Pope Francis on the subway, for example, barely made the media rounds. Elsewhere, Julie Grahame, editor-in-chief of photography magazine aCurator, selects five fine art photographs that represent the best of the year to her, including a striking shot from Michael Massala’s “Afterlife” series that hauntingly captures a roller coaster on the Jersey Shore submerged in water, post-Hurricane Sandy. Then, there are the photographs that say what we don’t have words for — the violence at the Boston Marathon, followed by the Red Sox’s moving tribute to the bombing victims after their World Series win; the outpouring of anger in Turkey; and an image of a shark
within a shark that you have to see to believe. We close with a farewell to those we lost this year — Mandela, Peter O’Toole, Joan Fontaine, Roger Eb-

2013’s Most Telling News Imagery REFLECTING OUR HYPER-VISUAL culture, the “Best Photo of the Year” list has fast become a media staple. If you indeed come across one, what you can generally count on are the most dramatic, sensational or touching scenes from the past year’s current events. Because we at BagNews spend the year tracking news imagery as much for truth telling or impressive spin, our aim here was
a little different. In a short list of five photos (many of those other year-end lists can range from dozens of pics to over a hundred), we went for pictures slightly under the radar. At the same time, each of these photos — some straight from the newswire, some bobbing to the surface via social media — represent a deeper kernel of disclosure, novelty or poignancy about the year’s top stories. Each image links to a post at BagNewsNotes where you can look deeper.

The Further Invisible Adventures of Edward Snowden Snowden was arguably the newsmaker of the year. Part of what transfixed the visual press was the mystery of his whereabouts — the spy as the quintessential invisible man. This Instagram of an empty seat from AP Correspondent, Max Seddon, aboard Snowden’s supposed flight to Cuba, says it all. (Get the full visual report.)
Obama Shooting a Gun It was politically fortuitous for the president to be able to produce this picture after claiming, during the postNewtown gun control debate, that he was no stranger to firearms. Today however, the fact that the photo caters so much to conservatives leaves a bitter taste after the administration’s gun control push came up largely empty.

Pope Francis on the Subway What surprised us about this striking photo of the newly named Pope Francis is how the picture hardly circulated. In our discussion of the photo, we concluded — in this day and age — it must truly demonstrate the man’s modesty.
Dying for Brands

If traditional media focused primarily on portraits of survivors or tragic images of the pancaked building, more culpable images also surfaced from the factory collapse in Bangladesh. Our post features several shots of Western brands found in the rubble. The shirt to the left bears a Benetton label.
Senate Armed Services Hearing: Sexual Assault Yes, the Senate hearings on sexual assault were groundbreaking, spurred by the number of women senators now on the committee. The photos of the testimony, as we elaborate on here, were also profoundly moving. In the photo, Anu Bhagwati, executive director and co-founder of the Service Women’s Action Network, testifies before the most anguished-looking military brass. What makes this photo so ironic, however, is how incident after incident continues to be reported, even involving officers charged with addressing the problem. The Year’s Most Striking Fine Art Photography Choosing just a handful of fine-art images to celebrate at year-end wasn’t easy — I’m always in love with each feature I publish at aCurator. I am fortunate to show quite a variety of images by both emerging and established photographers in a format they and the viewers — which include a good mix of photographers, art directors, photo editors and gallerists — all really appreciate. As you’ll see ahead, some of my favorites are ones that straddle fine art and documentary.

Life In Blue At the beginning of the year, the gallery where I was working, ClampArt in New York, exhibited a series by Evzen Sobek. Sobek is a photographer and teacher in the Czech Republic. Each summer, Sobek goes to the banks of the NovÊ Mlýny reservoirs in South Moravia to record life by the water. The vacationers are ex-caravanners
who have embraced a more stationary summer life, parking up and staying for a while to enjoy calm waters, cheap beer and easy carp fishing. The photographs are beautifully consistent, showing uninhibited locals enjoying simple summer pastimes under crisp blue skies and in safe blue waters. I chose this in particular for its uncanny feeling, yet humorous appeal.

River Gambia A lot of crowdfunding goes on these days, and we all have to be selective with the projects we want to support —this photograph is one of the results of a really good one! I’ve been watching the photographer/producer-writer team of Jason Florio and Helen Jones-Florio for some time now. In 2009, they made a circumnavigation of The Gambia, on foot, taking portraits of village chiefs and elders, in a project named
“Silafando” (“a gift to you on behalf of my journey”). In 2012, they successfully campaigned to return, raising enough money and sponsorships to trace the River Gambia by foot and canoe from its source in Guinea, through Senegal, and to the Atlantic Ocean coast of The Gambia. Blogging along the way, the Florios kept their audience thoroughly engaged. This is one of the standout images to me, a straight-up crowd-pleaser.

The subject of a surprising amount of controversy, selfies have been blamed for sexualizing young women and used as an example of the “me” generation’s narcissism. This year, however, they finally lost their stigma. Oxford noted that the frequency of the word in the English language increased by 17,000 percent since this time last year. Twerking Miley Cyrus ruled quite a few news cycles this year. The star began her total world domination when she delivered a controversial performance at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, in which she dressed in a teddy-bear getup and twerked against Robin Thicke (left). As 2013 waged on, important things like Syria’s war were lost in discussions of twerking. “What is twerking?” subsequently became the most searched question of 2013 on Google, while Cyrus was the most searched person of the year.
