Tom Scotcher

Desire Paths

We are delighted to be holding this solo exhibition of paintings by Tom Scotcher at the fabulous Black Bough premises in Ludlow.

Tom Scotcher exhibited with Twenty Twenty Gallery in Quality Square, and continues with us online. This exhibition has been a year in the making, and has been made possible for Tom as he was awarded a grant by the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation in 2023, enabling him to focus on producing this series of paintings.

“The main themes of this group of work is about exploring spaces off the beaten track, feeling fully immersed in the landscape, and the magical qualities of nature. The title ‘Desire Paths’ encompasses my whole outlook on being in the space and extracting these moments of quiet clarity. The two words are short but very potent with meaning. ‘Desire’, that longing feeling of being surrounding by things that grow. ‘Path’, the literal paths we take in the woods and through life.”

Alice Wadsworth meets Tom Scotcher

In Tom Scotcher’s illuminated rural landscapes, the eye is pulled through lightways and pathways“desire paths” carved by seasons, plants, animals, rarely by humans. These routes draw us into sensory worlds.

The paintings are a combination of observation and recollection, so while they depict ancient timelines we also see the elongated moment of Scotcher’s gaze, as he seeps time into his work, patching together the turn of morning light into evening, into a liminal hum. While there is force in these paintings - a luminous glow, brightly alive - it is a soft kind of strength.

Scotcher’s impressions of the woods are filtered through the stories his father - a stonemason and carpenter - would weave of goblins, fairies and fantastical occurrences; tales covered in the moss of generations of folklore, reminders of how history has gouged and shaped the landscape.

Several of Tom Scotcher’s works are divided into sections, resembling a stained-glass window. He doesn’t paint to the edge of each canvas, allowing scars of reddened ground to both mark the architectural shapes of their canvases, and create another intimate entryway for the viewer.

Scotcher’s work leads us along in what Benjamin Myers in Under the Rock terms “gentle trespass”treading lightly, stopping often: “in sticking to the path, you’re only going to see so much”.
