The pioneers of wine revolution in Western Australia, Capel Vale was the first one to own and establish vineyards in the cool climate regions of Margaret River, Mount Barker and Geographe. This enabled the production of wines with definitive regional flavour and varietal expression while focusing on balance, complexity and elegant fruit flavours. Peter Pratten established the first winery on the Stirling Estate in Capel in 1979, followed by the first vintage made in 1980.
6 years later, Peter Pratten as a winemaker produced a Capel Vale Riesling which was named as the Australian National Dry White Champion. This moment became historic not only for Capel Vale wines but also for Riesling in Australia. Ever since the establishment of the company in 1974 by Dr Peter and Elizabeth Pratten to hand over the business to son Simon Pratten in the mid 2000’s, Capel Vale wines have consistently been one of the leading familyowned and managed wineries of Australia.
