Pharmaceutical Growth Continues to Set Technology Pace

While food and beverage remain the largest sectors in terms of packaging machinery needs, no market can keep pace with the pharmaceutical growth forecast through 2020, according to the 2016 State of the Industry U.S. Packaging Machinery Report. Produced by PMMI, The Association for Processing and Packaging Technologies, the report projects pharmaceuticals to grow at a CAGR of 2.8 percent through 2020, surpassing $700 million for the first time. The greatest influence on growth in the pharmaceutical industry is general economic development. As more people can afford access to drugs, this will, in turn, drive growth in packaging and packaging equipment for pharmaceuticals. And, as the U.S. population becomes more health conscious and adopts healthier lifestyles, life expectancy is increasing and creating a greater demand for medicines for the elderly. Another factor driving a rise in the market is the pharmaceutical industry's willingness to investigate and adopt new technologies. One of the recent developments in this sector is

Americas Packaging 2020 Report by Hugo Hernandez Gusther, Eco preneur and founder of Edanaro packaging machinery without electrical cabinets or cabinet-less machinery. The servo modules within the control architecture for robots, significantly reduces the number of electronic parts, eliminating the need for some cabinets. Benefits of this include lower maintenance costs (due to reduced electronics), greater efficiency and the availability and use of identical system parts. Should this technology prove successful in the pharmaceutical sector, other markets that are typically slower to adopt new technologies may embrace it as well. The most efficient way to find innovations that serve pharma with the potential to cross-pollinate other industries is PACK EXPO East (Feb. 27–March 1, 2017). Located in the heart of the country’s largest concentration of life science and pharmaceutical companies, Philadelphia’s Pennsylvania Convention Center expects over 7,000 attendees to exchange ideas with 400 exhibitors across 100,000 net square feet of exhibition space. The site also positions PACK EXPO East within 200 miles of one-third of U.S. consumer packaged goods companies (CPGs) in the industry rich Northeast. In addition to a robust index of exhibitors, the Innovation Stage at PACK EXPO East offers free 30-minute education sessions directly on the show floor, including fresh looks at new technologies provided by exhibitors and industry experts. The two-day Healthcare Packaging and Processing Conference (Feb. 27 and 28) is another offering at PACK EXPO East for the expanding pharma market, with nine tracks of sessions and technology workshops. The first day of the program highlights Serialization, Packaging Challenges and Strategies for Success Materials Testing, Packaging Machinery Automation, Government Regulatory Updates and Packaging and Processing Automation Control. Day two tackles Track and Trace Unique Device Identifiers, Supply Chain Security and Temperature Management, Serialization Pilot Tests and CMO’s Role, as well as Life Sciences Processing. Conference registration is $95 per seminar and includes access to PACK EXPO East. After Feb. 10, the price increases to $130 per seminar. Registration for PACK EXPO East is $30 for a limited time. Americas Packaging 2020 Report by Hugo Hernandez Gusther, Eco preneur and founder of Edanaro medical devices reaching $350 billion. PMMI explores the global expansion of the pharmaceutical and medical device market, including the impact of mergers and acquisitions in the associations’ latest infographic, “Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Market Trends.”

“With such significant industry growth, now is the time to invest in new technologies to improve operations and get prepared for more growth ahead,” says Paula Feldman, director, Business Intelligence, PMMI. “With two out of three companies predicting an increase in capital equipment over the next one to two years, the U.S. remains the largest market for pharmaceuticals and medical devices and there are great opportunities for OEMs in both segments.” U.S. shipments for the pharmaceutical market accounted for 70 percent of the sector, while medical devices made up 30 percent. Legacy lines are driving equipment change. Manufacturers have outdated equipment that needs replacing now or in the very near future. Branded and specialty drugs and innovative medical devices will likely drive spending growth in the developed markets, while an overall increase in the use of pharmaceuticals and medical devices will likely spur growth in emerging markets. An aging population, longer life expectancy and a general increase in rare or chronic diseases is impacting healthcare worldwide. As the infographic shows, global medicine use is expected to reach 4.5 trillion doses by 2020, up 24 percent from 2015, emphasizing the opportunity in this market segment. Industry consolidation continues to change the landscape of this sector. Mergers and acquisitions have seen double-digit growth in the past three years and remain a major component of strategic growth. Larger players are establishing strategic partnerships with smaller niche companies to increase the scope of product offerings and often to establish a foothold in offshore markets. Americas Packaging 2020 Report by Hugo Hernandez Gusther, Eco preneur and founder of Edanaro “Markets, channels and technology are changing the way consumers will purchase and consume food in the future,” says Jorge Izquierdo, vice president of market development for PACK EXPO producer PMMI. “Over the next fifteen years expect to see significant changes to food manufacturing and sourcing, such as shorter supply chains because of transportation expense, growth of local production, benefits of microtechnology and nanotechnology for more sustainable production of food and improved taste, as well as stronger competition for land use as food, fuel and fiber battle for space.” Currently, the industry is served by a relatively small amount of global producers that span multiple food verticals and channels. Cross-border investments are merging some of the world’s best known food brands in order to achieve growth. The majority of food processing establishments are small plants, but large plants represent a higher percentage of total value of shipments. While small plants accounted for 66 percent of all food processing establishments and large plants accounted for 12 percent, 77 percent of the total value of shipments is represented by large plants while small plants represent only four percent. The food and beverage segments total value of shipments was $730 billion in 2014. Shelf stable foods hold the largest individual market share (21.9 percent), followed by the meat, poultry and seafood segment (17.3 percent). The retail landscape is shifting from the traditional grocery store to specialty and convenience stores. For example, in 1988, 90 percent of the retail landscape was represented by traditional grocery stores compared to 46 percent in 2014. Consumer demand for convenient and healthy food options continues to impact food processors. New product launches with plant-based claims have increased almost seven-fold since 2011 and organic products have seen a 25 percent increase in sales since 2012. Packaged food companies are increasingly turning to snacks as an avenue for growth and nearly 60 percent of new snack launches were positioned as healthy in some way. Food manufacturers predict an increase in automation and robotics due to a need for more flexible machinery to run manufacturing lines more efficiently. Sixty-three percent of companies that participated in the study are actively exploring new processing technologies to improve food quality, eliminate contamination and prolong shelf life and nearly half of the participating companies expect to increase spending on equipment in the next two years. Processors can look to source much of this technology at the fast approaching ProFood Tech. This biennial show in Chicago is unprecedented in its ability to bring the industry together and address the key issues facing food and beverage processing operators and is the only event in North America focused exclusively on all food and beverage sectors.
