INDUSTRIAL REPORT FOR LED LIGHTING PROFESSIONALS For the latest news and insights on the web at www.superindustrialonline.com or www.edanaro.com Compare leasing and finance vendors online During testing, modules with adhesive on top of the LED were supplied with 700 mA of electric current over a sixweek period and heated up to 70°C. During this time, and in a subsequent intensity test, there was no decrease in brightness for the products that are suited for direct LED contact and a very slight decrease for those for indirect LED contact. The adhesives’ lowoutgassing and yellowingresistant nature ensures longterm high optical quality of the LED module. Lightcuring epoxy resins and acrylates of the DELOKATIOBOND, DELOPHOTOBOND and DELODUALBOND families are the most efficient choice for LEDcompatible products as they enable fast assembly processes. They are also more stable and provide a better seal than silicones, which can allow humidity to enter into the LED and electronics. Lightcuring adhesives feature temperature stability and flexibility, enabling them to withstand heat, cold and vibrations. Their universal adhesion capabilities offers a reliable and nearly invisible connection for even the most complex geometries and material combinations.

DELO, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of industrial adhesives for automotive, consumer and industrial electronics applications, now offers a dualcuring epoxy resin that can be used in the most demanding applications. DELOMONOPOX VE 72768 offers greater bonding accuracy and is extremely resistant to substances like oil, transmission fluid, gasoline, methanol and printing ink. Designed with special hardeners, this new adhesive is used where bonded or encapsulated components are exposed to extreme temperatures and harsh chemicals. Robert Saller, director sales international, DELO, said, “Up until now, only heatcuring adhesives have been available for highreliability applications. By integrating the light fixing process, not only are we able to provide users with a greater bonding accuracy, but also a defined fillet and easier handling of the cured components.” The new adhesive allows for defined glob top encapsulation even in the tightest spaces on a circuit board. With light curing, the glob top forms a skin and can ‘freeze’ its shape, so none of the adhesive flows away during the heat curing process. This eliminates one step in the process as compared to the dam and fill method, which is the only other encapsulation alternative in miniaturization. Curing is achieved through a twostage process. First, depending on intensity, the adhesive is lightfixed in up to 5 seconds to achieve a die shear strength of more than 1 N on the FR4 circuit INDUSTRIAL REPORT FOR LED LIGHTING PROFESSIONALS For the latest news and insights on the web at www.superindustrialonline.com or www.edanaro.com Compare leasing and finance vendors online

Then it is briefly heat cured (for example 30 minutes at 150°C) to obtain its full strength of 50 MPa on FR4. The system is offered in two viscosities, one for bonding applications and another for encapsulation. Its operating temperature range is from 65°C to 180°C.

quick and simple production process. The DELOML DB154 retains its strength at temperatures up to +180°C. Designed for use in electric motors, DELOML DB154 can easily bond buried magnets, rotor packages as well as shafts to hubs. This new adhesive offers exceptional temperature stability and heat resistance, achieving more than twice the shear strength values of other methacrylates in the same temperature range. Many other adhesives on the market experience a strong power drop at temperatures above +150°C. DELOML DB154 retains its strength when it comes in frequent contact with high temperature, corrosive fluids, such as gear oil, motor oil and gasoline. Cured by exposure to UV or visible light, the adhesive reaches initial strength within six seconds, securely fixing the components and allowing the process to promptly continue. This provides an even initial fillet strength for more secure bonding. Full strength of this adhesive is achieved when no oxygen is present in the curing process. Unlike one or twocomponent epoxy resins, lightcuring methacrylates, such as DELOML DB154, require shorter periods of curing time. This enables a faster production process as well as helps reduce the carbon footprint made during production, since no energy is used for heat curing. It also eliminates the mechanical fixing of the components prior to heat curing, saving additional process time. This mediumviscous product adheres to steel and aluminum as well as to magnets made of rare earth often consisting of an ironneodymium mixture. If an activator is used, metals can also be joined to a component made of plastic.

: Heatcuring adhesives are used in many applications that require high strength and permanent resistance to environmental influences. In order to achieve these properties, the adhesive is cured at temperatures between 100 °C and 150 °C in most cases. DELO Industrial Adhesives has developed a special adhesive for temperaturesensitive parts that gives full strength even at a curing temperature as low as 60°C. An application area where many temperaturesensitive materials are used is optical packaging. In this industry, components are bonded to minicameras, actuators and infrared, image or motion sensors for consumer electronics. The microoptics of these assemblies are often covered by antireflection or filter coatings. Unlike most plastic lenses, these coatings are very sensitive and get damaged at elevated temperatures. The new DELOMONOPOX LT204 epoxy resin now makes it possible to bond these materials without any problems.

DELO® Industrial Adhesives has developed a new adhesive for the reliable bonding of RFID chips and antennas. It transmits electrical signals reliably, gives high longterm die shear strength, and enables efficient production as it can be jetted. The global RFID market is rapidly growing. IDTechEx expect it to triple to US$ 23.4 million by the year 2020. Tag manufacturers, who sold nearly six billion items in 2013 alone, focus on costefficient production. Already today, one flipchip system bonds up to 20,000 chips to antenna substrates per hour. At the same time, the trend towards miniaturization is everincreasing also in the field of RFID labels. Their chips are often just 0.02x0.02 in (400x400 µm) in size, which further boost the requirements imposed on the adhesive used. The surfaces for contacting and fixing are shrinking, and the adhesive must be precisely applied in minute quantities. For this chip attach process, DELO ® has developed the new anisotropic conductive

DELOMONOPOX ® AC245 adhesive. It is based on an epoxy resin and provides the utmost

reliability thanks to optimized filler content. To verify the reliability, DELO subjected the bonded labels to the special 85/85 test where specimens are stored at +185 °F (+85 °C) and 85 % relative humidity. The tag sensitivity remains at 85 percent of the initial value even after 1,000 hours under these conditions. In addition, this product is widely usable. It is suitable for the commonly used antenna substrates PET/aluminum, PET/copper or paperbased structures, and for both HF and UHF tags.

Optimized for high label output Many of today’s labels require not more than 4.41×10 8 lb (0.02 mg) of adhesive. Therefore,

most RFID manufacturers rely on adhesive jetting to achieve an efficient production process. Such minute quantities of DELO ® ’s RFID adhesive can be dispensed through jet valves. The results achieved during a processing time of several days are both reproducible and precise. Thus, DELO ® ’s adhesive combines high reliability and excellent processing properties. In

production, this long processing time offers the advantage of shortening the cleaning intervals of the valves to minimize machine downtimes. In addition, less adhesive is wasted. When a thermode is used, the adhesive takes 8 s at +356 °F (+180 °C) to cure, ensuring high production output.

DELO® wins German Industry’s Innovation Award 03/17/2014

DELO® Industrial Adhesives won the German Industry’s Innovation Award in the category “SMEs”. The company was honored for its research activities to reduce reflections on displays with the help of transparent adhesives. Displays are gaining ground in many industries from consumer electronics to cars to industrial systems. However their readability under sunlight is a wellknown issue. The main reason for this problem is the air gap between display and glass cover that refracts the sunlight. DELO® ’s adhesives fill this gap and thus reduce the reflections by two thirds. This saves energy consumed by the backlight of the display. In addition, adhesives significantly increase the display’s stability. In a special test, the glass cover remained intact and did not splinter even after the impact of a steel ball with a weight of 13.22 lb (6 kilograms) from a height of 98.425 in (2.5 meters). Another reason for awarding DELO ® is that the innovation has already proven itself in practice. Display manufacturers can produce high volumes within short periods of time.

“This award is a great honor for our entire team and confirms all of our research efforts. At the same time, it demonstrates the important role our hightech adhesives play in modern products”, INDUSTRIAL REPORT FOR LED LIGHTING PROFESSIONALS For the latest news and insights on the web at www.superindustrialonline.com or www.edanaro.com Compare leasing and finance vendors online

that their new displays satisfy all safety requirements imposed by the automotive industry, and protect occupants of vehicles against cutting injuries. Navigation and entertainment screens in cars are becoming everlarger and are meanwhile the central control point. For the protection of the displays, many manufacturers consider using glass. It gives a pleasing surface feel and a highquality impression as expected by users of tablets and smartphones, and more and more car drivers, as well. A series of tests conducted by the manufacturer of special glass SCHOTT and the adhesive expert DELO ® has

demonstrated that a combination of highstrength aluminosilicate glass and special adhesives complies with the safety standards of the automotive industry. The two project partners tested how completely bonded displays behave in a crash compared to conventional displays with an air gap between glass cover and LCD. For this purpose, they conducted headon crash tests by the criteria of the international ECE R21 standard in which a steel ball with a weight of 14.99 lb (6.8 kg) impacts on the displays with a speed of approx. 15 mi/h (24.1 km/h). In the tests, the standard displays were completely destroyed by the steel ball and hundreds of glass splinters were blown off in all directions by the impact. In contrast, only the inner liquid crystal display of the completely bonded displays with the special SCHOTT glass broke. The glass covers remains completely intact, which protects the passengers against cutting injuries.

Highstrength special glass and flexible hightech adhesive For the tests, the floated aluminosilicate glass Xensation® Cover made by SCHOTT was used. This glass type is especially suitable for displays thanks to its high strength. The gap between

display and glass cover was filled with a special DELO ® adhesive. This bonding increases the durability of the composite and its resistance to oscillations and shocks.

The adhesives used are highly flexible and optically completely transparent. In addition, they pass the thermal, humidity and UV yellowing tests of the automotive industry. Their index of refraction is adapted accordingly. Therefore, they clearly reduce disturbing reflections and

What is more important than the legal provisions is the acceptance of belts. Germany, with a use rate of 97 percent in the backseat, is a positive exception. The USA reach a quota of 70 percent. Russia (8 percent), the Emirates (5 percent) and Mexico (4 percent) trail way behind. Unbreakable displays protect both, backseat passengers and front seat occupants against severe cutting injuries.

Low warpage: DELO® enables largearea chip encapsulation 02/11/2014

Costefficient production is playing an evergrowing role also in applications requiring high reliability. Therefore, DELO® Industrial Adhesives has attached particular importance to its new encapsulant having a low coefficient of expansion to enable largearea chip encapsulation without warpage. Both, chip production and chip processing are experiencing a strong trend towards rationalization, for example in the field of chip encapsulation. On the one hand, more and more companies place a vast number of equal assemblies onto a printed circuit board, which are then INDUSTRIAL REPORT FOR LED LIGHTING PROFESSIONALS For the latest news and insights on the web at www.superindustrialonline.com or www.edanaro.com Compare leasing and finance vendors online

On the other hand, complete PCB assemblies are fully encapsulated instead of using housings for protection from environmental influences. “Largearea encapsulation significantly shortens the process time and holds great savings potential”, says Gudrun Weigel, Director Engineering and Vice President at DELO® . “However, this approach often reached its limits in practice.”

In applications subject to high chemical and thermal stress, largearea encapsulation has previously caused warpage of the PCB during curing. This effect caused tensions within the assemblies and made singulation of the packages by sawing difficult. This warpage is the result of dissimilar coefficients of expansion of PCBs (10 – 20 ppm/K) and encapsulants (more than 20 ppm/K in most cases). DELO ® has developed an enhanced encapsulant that achieves a CTE

value of 11 ppm/K. Warpage is reduced to a minimum, which makes this encapsulant perfect for largearea chip encapsulation.

DELO® Industrial Adhesives presents new adhesives MEMS packaging with unique combinations of properties. For the first time, MEMS adhesives combine high flexibility and the utmost shear strength, while providing the best processing properties. Microelectromechanical systems, also called MEMS, are on the rise and are meanwhile found in many everyday products, such as mobile phones and automotive applications. “Although these microsystems are just a few millimeters in size, there is still a trend towards miniaturization”, says Robert Saller, VP Sales International at DELO® . “Where previously used adhesives, such

as silicones, reach their limits, our new products feature the best performance. It’s not only that they are very flexible. They also have a high die shear strength and are easy to process. Thus, they support the development of even smaller MEMS.” The newly developed MEMS adhesives are highly flexible, do not get brittle, and reliably equalize tensions arising upon thermal stress. This ensures unchanged signal characteristics during the entire duration of use. Despite their high flexibility, DELO® ’s MEMS adhesives give the utmost shear strength at the same time. They impress with excellent dispensing and

processing properties as they can be jetted and cure at low temperatures within short periods of time. The combination of these properties makes them unique in the market.

DELOLUX 202 / 400: Double irradiation line for even faster processes The new DELOLUX 202 / 400 LED curing lamp is based on the proven DELOLUX 20 / 400 but offers a longer irradiation line. The innovative optical system of DELOLUX 202 / 400 generates an extremely even irradiation area with intensities of more than 200 mW/cm². This is a key precondition for processreliable adhesive curing. “Customer orientation is our number one priority when we develop new LED curing lamps”, says Christian Walther, Director of Sales Germany at DELO. “Our new DELOLUX 202 / 400 takes into account the variety of our customers’ applications. Now we can supply an area lamp with an irradiation line, which is twice as long as that of the existing DELOLUX 20 lamp. This is particularly beneficial for customers who operate compact production lines.” Providing a light exit area with a width of 48.1 mm, DELOLUX 202 / 400 is particularly suitable for bonding small components in linear production systems. Ideal applications include mini loudspeaker bonding or manufacture of small switches. The double length of the light exit area allows reliable adhesive curing even at elevated belt speeds. The lamp heads can be arrayed seamlessly in both x and ydirection permitting a broad variety of irradiation geometries.

DELOLUX 50 x4: Even larger spot diameters and increased intensities with 4 LEDs With the new DELOLUX 50 x4 spot lamp, DELO Industrial Adhesives has incorporated four LEDs into a lamp head whose 15 mm diameter is only slightly larger than that of the existing DELOLUX 50 x1. The irradiated area of the DELOLOX 50 x4 is significantly larger and the intensity is even higher compared to existing lamp heads. The LEDs are supplied with power through a special, flexible “Powerguide”. The customer can connect up to four Powerguides to the base unit, allowing them to build up flexible irradiation stations. Powerguides with lengths up to 10 m provide additional flexibility, for example when bonding hardtoreach areas. DELOLUX 50 x4 can be used wherever fast curing of small areas is important, for example lens bonding or fixing of ferrites in magnet coils. The new DELOLUX 50 x4 curing lamp is offered with two primary lenses, which can be screwed to the specific lamp head. Two spot diameters, 5 mm and 10 mm, are available.

The watercooled DELOLUX ® 80 / 400 combines high intensity with fast curing of an even and large irradiation area. The light exit area is 85 percent larger than that of the predecessor.

Thanks to the innovative optical system, the intensity is very evenly distributed on a significantly larger irradiation area. Thus, the components to be bonded are homogeneously irradiated even at varying work distances. The result is the utmost flexibility of the distance between lamp head and component with dissimilar dimensions. DELOLUX ® 80 / 400 is already used in the production line of Knowles Sound Solutions, the market and innovation leader in mobile phone loudspeakers.

Wolfgang Suete, Process Engineer at Knowles Sound Solutions, summarizes the advantages of DELOLUX ® 80 / 400: “DELOLUX ® 80 / 400 is convincing in its very attractive performance and

its relatively small dimensions. The integrated cooling system is also beneficial. It replaces the water cooling system within the production line.” The DELOLUX ® 50 / 400 LED spot lamp is suitable for all lightcuring adhesives. The

wavelength of 400 nm improves the permeation of difficult to transmit plastics such as PMMA, PS or PC. This means a significant extension of the application spectrum of the DELOLUX® 50 spot lamps. It is also beneficial that thicker layers can be cured. Thanks to the longer

wavelength, the light can penetrate deeper into the adhesive, which ensures processreliable adhesive curing. With this property profile, the DELOLUX® 50 spot lamps are ideal for applications requiring maximum power on limited space, such as pin casting.

DELO® Industrial Adhesives presents new adhesives for bonding industrial displays and touch panels. Typical application areas include largearea displays in industrial applications, the automotive industry and aircraft interiors. The new optically transparent adhesives improve the readability of displays in direct sunlight and increase the ruggedness. Disturbing reflections from the surroundings are significantly reduced by bonding the glass cover directly to the LCD using an indexmatched adhesive. The new adhesives combine extreme softness and high optical transparency with good adhesion and yellowing resistance. For the first time, the developers succeeded in unifying these properties in a completely new chemistry that allows curing of shadowed areas. The displays are processed fast in short cycle times with the help of light curing. Afterwards, the adhesive completely cures through a reaction with air humidity. That means for the customer that the components postcure at room temperature and no further curing step is necessary. When bonding the components, the display is more durable and the resistance to vibrations and shocks is increased.

DELO®, a manufacturer of industrial adhesives, has developed a special multipurpose epoxy resin. This twocomponent adhesive is unique and versatile thanks to the combination of its properties. The tensionequalizing DELODUOPOX ® AD840 adhesive completely cures at room

temperature and stands out by excellent adhesion to metal, plastic and smooth surfaces. Therefore, it is ideal for being used for bonding components in mechanical engineering as pretreatment can be omitted. For customers, this translates into a saving of costs sand blasting would cause. What is more, this highstrength construction adhesive can be used in a temperature range from 40 °F up to +284 °F (40 °C up to +140 °C). It even achieves excellent bond strength at temperatures above +176 °F (+80 °C) and provides high peel and impact resistance. What is particularly beneficial is that the adhesive is easy to process from DELO ® ’s special

double chamber cartridge system. It is dispensed from a double cartridge with a static mixing tube, just like a onecomponent product. In addition, the processing time is long and very userfriendly (up to 90 minutes in a preparation of 100 g). This is perfect for the production of large components. With DELODUOPOX ® AD840, DELO ® has developed a product that will do nothing else but convince the customers by its advantages.
