Eaton's Advanced Ephesus LED Systems Light Up Hockey All­Star Games

SYRACUSE, NY​ — Power management company Eaton today announced that the biggest names in the National Hockey League (NHL®) and American Hockey League (AHL) will play their all­star events this weekend under its innovative and energy­efficient light­emitting diode (LED) digital lighting system.

Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee, will host the NHL All­Star Skills Competition™ on Saturday, Jan. 30, and the NHL All­Star Game on Sunday, Jan. 31. The 2016 AHL All­Star Classic activities will take place on Jan. 31 and Monday, Feb. 1, in Onondaga County War Memorial Arena in Syracuse, New York. The two venues are among the latest sports facilities to adopt Eaton’s Ephesus LED system technology to improve lighting, operational flexibility, energy­efficiency and fan engagement.

Miami's Sun Life Stadium to Enhance Fan Experience and Energy Efficiency with Eaton's Advanced Ephesus LED Lighting System

PEACHTREE CITY, GA​ … Power management company Eaton today announced the introduction of its ​ Lumark Prevail light­emitting diode (LED) Luminaire​ , a versatile, energy­saving and affordable lighting solution for area, site and roadway applications. Featuring a patent­pending architectural design, the Prevail luminaire combines easy installation features with multiple controls options, resulting in significant installation, energy and maintenance savings for both retrofit and new applications.

“The Lumark Prevail luminaire can provide energy and maintenance savings of more than 60 percent when compared to traditional metal halide products, qualifying the fixture for energy rebates,” said Kraig Kasler, president, Eaton’s Lighting Division. “The variety of controls solutions include an optional Integrated Sensor Control System that offers occupancy detection and daylight harvesting, providing additional energy and installation savings, while complying with some mandated energy code requirements.”

In addition to the Integrated Sensor Control System, the Prevail luminaire is available with Eaton’s additional​ control features​ including an optional LumaWatt Outdoor Wireless Control and Monitoring System, which manages the lighting levels according to pedestrian and traffic safety needs. The system allows for metering power consumption and wireless communication and employs four control strategies to automate luminaire behavior including scheduled on/off, scheduled dimming, occupancy detection and daylight harvesting. The product is also offered with an optional National Electrical Manufacturers Association 3­pin or 7­pin photocontrol receptacle, enabling wireless dimming when used with a compatible photocontrol.

The Prevail luminaire’s patent pending, standard versatile arm mount makes retrofit and new installations easy. The standard arm, which features a built­in wiring compartment for simple installation, can also uniquely accommodate a wide range of existing fixture drilling patterns and can be installed on both square and round poles, simplifying and reducing installation time and cost. The fixture is also available with a wall and mast arm for building and roadway applications.

Featuring Eaton’s patented LED optical technology, the luminaire is offered in four optical distributions that deliver controlled, uniform illumination and maximum light levels, directing the light exactly where it’s needed. A low profile, modern architectural design allows one housing to accommodate multiple lumen packages ranging from 6,100 to 15,100 nominal lumens to replace typical high intensity discharge (HID) products from 150 watts to up to 400 watts.

Eaton Announces a Call for Entries for the SOURCE Awards National Lighting Design Competition, New Online Entry at The Lighting reSOURCE

Professional and student entries can be submitted at ​ The Lighting reSOURCE​ , Eaton’s new online informational hub. The competition deadline is January 20, 2016.

The SOURCE Awards competition, which focuses on furthering the understanding, knowledge and function of lighting as a primary element in design, is open to all lighting designers, architects, engineers, professional designers and consultants who use Eaton’s lighting and controls products for interior or exterior design projects. Students currently enrolled in any of these disciplines are also eligible to enter projects based on conceptual lighting designs and will be judged in a separate student category.

“There are many talented lighting specifiers and students that should be recognized for their creative and outstanding work,” said Kraig Kasler, president, Eaton’s Lighting Division. “We’re always looking for innovative uses and techniques of our lighting and controls products and this competition is a reflection of that.”

Entries must be received on or before January 20, 2016, and winners will be announced in April 2016 at LIGHTFAIR International in San Diego, California. The awards competition asks participants to enter projects that combine aesthetics, creativity and technical performance to address specific lighting needs while meeting project constraints and design concept goals. The competition also seeks a creative use of fixtures providing energy­efficient design solutions in addition to standard projects. There will be no minimum or maximum number of awards given, as each project will be judged on its own merit. Selected entries will earn the distinction of Winner, Honorable Mention or Award of Recognition.

Judging for the 39th Annual SOURCE Awards competition will take place in February 2016 by a professional, independent panel of lighting and design professionals, as well as a representative from the SOURCE, Eaton’s premier lighting educational center. The student winner(s) will receive a $1,500 award and professional winner(s) will receive $2,000. All winners will receive a crystal trophy, local and national recognition and an invitation to attend a lighting seminar at the SOURCE, located in Peachtree City, Georgia. The ASYX 2.0 luminaires can be mounted upward or downward in multiple configurations including wall mount or single­ and dual­pendant mount. Key features of the asymmetric luminaires include a minimalistic housing design, allowing the fixtures to fade into its surrounding while delivering high lumen outputs. Rotating optics (Light Squares) allow the fixtures to stay aligned with mounting directions, while giving the flexibility to rotate the light output in the direction needed. In addition, the fixtures offer +/­ 20 degree up and down fixture adjustment, allowing for fine­tuning aiming in the field. This continuous aiming can be adjusted in 5­degree notched increments for perfect alignment.

The ASYX 2.0 can be installed in discreet mounting locations and can use integrated controls to compliment any controls system utilizing zero to 10 volt dimming standard protocol including optional Fifth Light Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI) system for complete energy management. Eaton’s optional Integrated Sensor Control System, which allows for both occupancy sensor and daylight harvesting control, is factory­installed so no additional wiring or special installation is required.

PEACHTREE CITY, GA​ — Power management company Eaton today announced that its light­emitting diode (LED) lighting solutions with an ​ Integrated Sensor Control System​ is enhancing the lighting performance and aesthetics at the Atlanta­based corporate headquarters of the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE). Choosing the ​ Metalux SkyRidge LED luminaires for their unique appearance and ability for occupancy detection, daylight harvesting and personal control, the conversion has reduced the energy consumption by more than 68 percent.

"The design team wanted to upgrade the lighting in our offices and conference rooms with the latest energy­saving LED technology that would meet our lighting performance needs and sustainability goals, while achieving a rating of an ENERGY STAR®­certified building,” said Bill Kent, program director, AEE. “We looked at a few options and chose the SkyRidge for its attractive appearance and control capability, which we could showcase to our customers."

The new lighting system upgrade, which consists of a one­to­one replacement of older fluorescent fixtures, includes 47 Metalux SkyRidge luminaires featuring ​ WaveStream LED technology​ , each with a factory­installed Integrated Sensor Control System, offering granular control to the individual fixtures. The control system allows for occupancy sensing, which turns light off when the spaces are unoccupied; daylight harvesting that reduces light level when natural light enters the space; and dimming capabilities, allowing users to set maximum light levels lower than full brightness. The system also provides personal control with hand­held remotes for employees to dim their personal lighting to their preferred setting.

The fixtures also feature the SkyTrim™, a luminous decorative accent color that is mounted directly on the light guide of a SkyRidge LED luminaires, emphasizing the AEE’s blue brand identity.

“Integrated lighting and controls solutions are becoming much more common,” said Kraig Kasler, president, Eaton’s Lighting Division. “Lighting systems are now a sophisticated network of fixtures, sensors and control devices, which can be controlled to conserve energy and increase the visual performance of the space. The AEE has recognized and taken advantage of these benefits, while utilizing local utility incentives to help fund this sustainable project.”

The Metalux SkyRidge LED luminaires are DesignLights Consortium® listed, qualifying the AEE for incentives as part of Georgia Power’s Commercial Energy Efficiency Program.

As part of the first and second phases of the $118­million LAX Curbside Appeal and Roadway Improvement Project, Eaton played a pivotal role in revamping the exterior curbside lighting using its light­emitting diode (LED) technology with each new street lighting pole consuming 48 percent less energy than the previous 33­year­old, high­pressure sodium lights they replaced.

A team from HLB, of Culver City, California, and architect AECOM, headquartered in Los Angeles, chose Eaton’s LightBAR™ LED optical technology because of its asymmetric roadway distribution and narrow linear design for the highly customized, double­arm Y­shaped, contemporary luminaire. footcandles) and provides uniform illumination for both the Upper/Departures and Lower/Arrivals levels at the airport, which serves 70.7 million passengers annually.

“We’re proud our LightBAR™ LED technology has helped to dramatically improve the traveler experience at LAX and that the roadway­approved technology could meet the challenging optical needs for this innovative custom street lighting project.” said Kraig Kasler, president, Eaton’s Lighting Division.

The 91 new LED street lighting products each consume only 413 watts compared to the 78 previous 920­watt high pressure sodium (HPS) fixtures. The upgrade results in approximately 48 percent reduction in power consumption per fixture. The energy reduction afforded the opportunity for airport officials to add additional architectural LED accent fixtures to highlight the new unique poles. In addition, the new streetlights can also be controlled and dimmed, presenting the possibility for additional energy savings.

With the first phase of 13 fixtures installed in 2013 in time for the unveiling of the $1.9 billion new Tom Bradley International Terminal, the team has now completed the final phase of an additional 78 fixtures. The LAX CTA Curbside Appeal and Roadway Improvement Project is part of an ongoing $8.5 billion LAX Modernization Program.

Announced at the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) conference and expo in Los Angeles on June 29, Eaton’s luminaires upgraded nearly 11 million square feet of parking garages at the airports with it’s advanced LED technologies, resulting in energy and maintenance savings of nearly $1.5 million annually.

also upgraded with Valet luminaires, received two awards, the “Highest Absolute Annual Savings in a Retrofit at a Single Parking Structure” and the “Largest Portfolio­wide Annual Absolute Energy Savings” awards.

“Replacing inefficient parking garage lighting with LED fixtures is one of the most practical, energy­efficient upgrades a city or business can make to save energy, reduce costs and lower carbon dioxide emissions,” said Mark Eubanks, president, Eaton’s Lighting Division. “These projects are a great example of how to increase overall efficiencies and performance to provide a safe and well­lit environment, all while helping save the airports’ energy and maintenance costs.”

The DIA’s lighting upgrade of more than 5,400 lighting products in its east and west parking garages with Eaton’s LED fixtures is helping the airport to save approximately $286,000 annually or $5.7 million over 20 years, while providing brighter and more evenly lit garages. The DTW conversion of the McNamara Terminal Parking Structure and Blue Deck consisted of replacing 6,050 existing garage fixtures, resulting in a 66 percent reduction in power consumption with an anticipated overall energy and maintenance savings of approximately $1.2 million annually.

Sponsored by BOMA, Green Parking Council, International Facility Management Association and International Parking Institute with technical support from the DOE, the LEEP Campaign offers recognition and support to encourage the adoption of proven high­efficiency lighting in parking facilities. PEACHTREE CITY, GA​ — Power management company Eaton today announced that its Neo­Ray Index light­emitting diode (LED) luminaires​ are helping to improve the lighting performance while lowering energy usage in the Gumberg Library at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. Recently completed on its first floor, this LED lighting upgrade will help the university reduce its annual energy consumption for the floor significantly.

"The first floor feels more vibrant and inviting,” says Kelley Cotter, marketing and electronic communications librarian at the Gumberg Library. “You can easily see the difference with the new, near­daylight LED lighting. The library staff has commented that since the lights were installed, they have noticed an increase in the volume of students studying on the first floor.”

For this project, Duquesne wanted a sustainable system with a contemporary style that also could be pendant­mounted in continuous rows, so the university chose the Neo­Ray Index direct/indirect LED pendants for the library, which houses nearly 750,000 print volumes and welcomed more than 510,000 visitors last year.

The lighting upgrade to the first floor study area and stacks included replacing a fluorescent system consisting of over 500 fixtures producing 37,160 watts. The new 110 Neo­Ray Index products consume only 5,170 watts, significantly reducing the upgraded floor’s energy consumption—more than 235,300 kilowatt hours per year (kWh). The yearly reduction of carbon dioxide emissions associated with this project is equivalent to 357,730 pounds.

The high efficacy LED downlights deliver up to 90 lumens per watt and are offered in 2700K, 3000K, 3500K and 4000K correlated color temperatures with a high color quality 90 color rendering index, satisfying California’s Title 24 compliance. The unique interchangeable beam­forming optics are available in Narrow Flood (25 degrees), Flood (40 degrees) and Wide Flood (55 degrees) options, which offer the ability to select a cone of light (beam angle) in proportion to the ceiling height. “Our Night Falcon product combines high­efficiency optics with superior thermal management and energy efficiency in a cost effective solution,” said Mark Eubanks, president, Eaton’s Cooper Lighting Division. “The LED floodlight offers customers greater than 75 percent in energy and maintenance savings compared to traditional lamp sources.”

For use in new construction and retrofit applications, the Night Falcon LED luminaire is available in two lumen packages including nominal 9,400 lumens, consuming 85 watts to replace 250­watt metal halide (MH) products and nominal 14,600 lumens, consuming 129 watts and replacing 400­watt MH lighting fixtures.

The floodlight utilizes precision­engineered optics delivering superior uniformity and illumination to the targeted application. Maximum fixture spacing is achieved utilizing a wide 6H x 6V NEMA distribution, reducing the number of fixtures required and installation costs in select applications.

The fixture is offered in standard 4000 Kelvin (K) correlated color temperature (CCT) with 3000K and 5700K CCT options available.

The Night Falcon product features a compact, robust designed incorporating a separate driver housing and thermal fins for maximum heat dissipation resulting in longer fixture and LED life.

The heavy­duty, die­cast housing is IP66 and 3G vibration rated for exceptional durability and long term reliability. The fixture’s lumen maintenance is greater than 90 percent at 50,000 hours for years of maintenance­free service.

For pole­mounted applications, an optional integrated sensor allows the fixture to be dimmed to 50 percent lumen output when no activity is detected, providing additional energy savings by reducing light levels and power consumption. This option complies with the new provisions of California Title 24. In addition, an optional National Electrical Manufacturers Association 7­pin photocontrol receptacle enables wireless dimming when used with compatible photocontrol.

Built with the installer in mind, the Night Falcon LED Floodlight is available in slipfitter and trunnion mounting configurations and weighing less than 25 pounds, providing mounting versatility while simplifying installation. Both mounting options include cast­in angle increments to facilitate accuracy of aiming. The product is also available with wire guard and vandal shield accessories to protect the lens from projected objects and visors to control glare and spill light.

Replacing more than 5,400 parking garage fixtures, the DIA conversion will include almost 5,000 ​ McGraw­Edison™ Valet™ light­emitting diode (LED) luminaires​ , helping the airport to save approximately $327,000 annually or $6.5 million over 20 years. Construction of the multimillion­dollar project began in May 2014 with an anticipated completion date of November 2014.

In addition to substantial savings over time, the new Valet LED products will help the DIA East and West parking garages become brighter and uniformly lit, increasing visibility and enhancing safety for its customers, while also shrinking its carbon footprint.

“We are happy our DesignLights Consortium® (DLC)­listed product will help the DIA reach its energy reduction and sustainable goals, while also saving the airport a significant amount of money each year,” said Mark Eubanks, president, Cooper Lighting Division. “Replacing inefficient fixtures with LED alternatives is one of the most practical solutions to save energy, reduce costs and lower carbon dioxide emission, while improving lighting performance.”

The conversion will result in a 45 percent energy savings and is estimated to reduce annual energy consumption by more than 3,400,000 kilowatt hours per year (kWh) or 68,000,000 kWh over the expected 20 year life of the McGraw­Edison Valet products. The yearly carbon reduction associated with the project is equivalent to the electricity used by 356 homes or taking 544 cars off the road each year. The long­lasting fixtures will also allow additional maintenance savings with fewer lamp replacements, reducing labor and material costs.

The installation of more than 4,000 McGraw­Edison Valet LED products will consume only 51 watts compared to the existing high press sodium (HPS) fixtures consuming 177 watts.

Additionally, more than 700 Valet 73­watt fixtures will reduce the wattage used in 250­watt and 150­watt HPS products, and 27­watt Valet products will replace metal halide surface­mounted downlights consuming 115 watts.

The McGraw­Edison Valet LED lighting fixtures are DLC listed, which qualifies the DIA for a local utility rebate from Xcel Energy’s Lighting Efficiency program. The DLC is a leading resource that distinguishes quality, high­performance LED products for commercial and industrial projects and produces a Qualified Products List to save time and provide peace of mind to lighting specifiers and property owners selecting products to support sustainable design practices. As a result, the airport is anticipating a rebate of approximately $630,000.

Eaton Supports Hillside, Inc. with $15,000 Donation for Sustainable Patient Dining Hall and Kitchen

Mumbai’s international airport recently opened the new T2 terminal, which will see more than 40 million visitors annually and features decorated carpets, an art museum and bold designs. The io LED luminaire, which was specifically designed for wall grazing applications, was chosen after rigorous competitive mock­ups.

The lighting design challenge was to uniformly light a six meter high by 4.8 km long wall so that when a stainless steel decorative perforated panel was installed in front of the wall, the impact of the silhouetted stainless steel was visually powerful. Given the enormous scale of this wall, achieving the visual affect while meeting the LEED Gold power density restrictions was a challenge. During the mock­up trials, only solutions from the io product line were able to uniformly light the wall from floor to ceiling while providing ideal optical efficiency. The io line™ series 2.0 product was the best solution to meet the aesthetic and energy efficient design challenges.

Several other features of the io products led to their selection in the new T2 architecture, including the remote driver location to easily address maintenance issues; meeting strict testing standards; the Ingress Protection (IP) rating of IP66 to prevent against dust, insects, moisture and water; and the fixture’s adjustability to allow for precise aiming. The io patented optical assembly delivers a powerful 10­degree projection of light while consuming very little energy.

Reduced power consumption and savings is a main component of LEED certification scoring, helping the airport to recently achieve its LEED Gold certification.

All the LED solutions are located in T2’s unique perimeter perforated wall display, the service core of the terminal and the vitrine display.
