Introduction I am a spontaneous, sportive person that has an eye for quality. If I start a project I will put in dedication and look for creative solutions. Being in contact with people is something I appreciate and am skilled in. Listening, asking the right questions and summarizing are skills that I use to get knowledge about a subject and to motivate people. While brainstorming in a group I cleverly look for correlations and connections through separating the means and the end. This is why working in teams gives me the most energy. Finally, I love to present my work and ideas with enthusiasm to a crowd. For my next challenge I am looking forward to put my knowledge and personal skills into projects where I get creative freedom. In the future I see myself as a connector in urban planning. I am passionate about cityness for two reasons. First, I enjoy the designing aspect and secondly I am interested in the sociologic aspect of urban areas. My passion and knowledge about cityness can be applied on both designing and working with the social aspect. The fact that a wide variety of cultures and ethnicities come together and use public spaces has always fascinated me. To gather data from people in creative ways is something in which I will keep innovating myself. I am motivated to develop my designing skills and get more experienced in organizing and managing processes where the users have a key role.

Merwe- Vierhavens (M4H), Rotterdam - The Netherlands Stimulate innovation in public space/harbor development feb 2018 - jul 2018 BA Thesis
Former coal storage in M4H 2018
For my BA thesis, I was looking for a subject that was as close as possible to my personal interests. During my minor “Civil Society, Cocreation and Transition” I learned about participation and inclusivity. This minor made me realize that I wanted to learn more about physical measures that can connect people with each other. Public spaces always played a big role in my personal development and have the potential to bind people to one another, their environment and create the urge to maintain these relationships. While searching for an appropriate case I had the themes “public space” and “interaction” in the back of my mind. The city of Rotterdam saw a chance to give meaning to a new concept; “Innovationfields”. This concept was introduced by Delva Landscape Architects during the making of the spatial framework for “Merwe- Vierhavens” (former harbor area).

EXPLANATION OF MASTERPLAN on how it stimulates innovation
11
For the relation between spatial planning and innovation Katz and Wagner divide three models in which urban functions can be clustered to stimulate innovation. The Anchor plus model, Re-imagined urban area and the Urbanized science park. These models all have one condition in common; Cityness. To stimulate cityness (and thereby innovation) the plinth should profile towards the public space as (at least) one of the following roles. The three roles of the plinth were found in the book of Jan Gehl, Cities for People. These schemes imagine how the “plinth-roles function.
Experiencezone; Where the public space experiences the variety of views on functions. Exchangezone; Where activities of the inside world show themselves to the public.

Casestudies To get grip on the scale of the MakersDistrict, innovation districts in the Netherlands were analyzed. Strijp S, Eindhoven and IPKW, Arnhem were visited to do interviews with creative entrepreneurs and observe how their public spaces function. Both districts have a good connection with the city centre and other commercial centers. Also their mix in functions provide cityness. This is noticeable in the public space.

Design study on MakersDistrict With the help of deskresaerch and case studies I was able to define the typologies of the public space. To complete the second part of my thesis, I did a design study on how and which of these typology’s could fit in the MakersDistrict, Rotterdam. The design is focusing on the functions in the plinths, the orientation of the buildings and respecting the aspects that are of creative and historical value.

Rotterdam - The Netherlands Spatial vision forming for nightculture in Rotterdam sep 2019 - present Cultural enterpreneurship
Nightcollective (sides) in collaboration with N8W8 (middle) nov 2019
Quintus and me are both graduated in the BA “spatial development and both shaped by the nightculture. We both see the values of nightculture (talent development, inclusivity, identification, bonding and employment opportunities). Quintus as a musician and me as a bartender (and urban planners) started the Nightcollective, september 2019. The goal of this collective is to make a spatial vision with and for the nightlife of Rotterdam. In februari 2019 Thijs Boer organized a protest for the nightculture in Rotterdam. This led to the start of the N8W8 (in januari 2020) which has a general vision for the nightculture in Rotterdam. The Nightcollective thinks ahead by making a spatial vision. Because every change in policy has effect on the ubran factory. 18
Presentation during Kick-Off N8W8, Mono; “Why a spatial vision? jan 2020
To get input for this research we interview experts. During our interviews we ask participants to paint a picture of their personal perspective of the Rotterdam nightlife. By doing this we make the subject spatial and accessible. We transcript these interviews into article. Together with their picture we upload these. To get publicity we also actively look for collaborations. Collecting data from the streets is something we value in this research. Especially the streets during night-time are relevant. By giving the respondent something in return for their information they are willing to participate. In this case we collaborated with a starting beerbrewer. During night-time we are offering people a beer in return for their of sketch the nightlife of Rotterdam.

One of the challenges the nightlife of Rotterdam is facing, is gentrification. The following illustrations show how this has effect on nightculture and the suggestion Nightcollective does to keep a healthy nightculture in the city.

After interviewing and letting people sketch the nightlife of Rotterdam one main thing became clear: The nightlife of Rotterdam is divided in a broad variety of clusters. We see this variety as an opportunity. To utilize the strength of different clusters they have to get connected to each other. Nightlife in between these clusters can function as a bridge between them. Besides that, the route between clusters has to be logical and pleasant to use.

Suggestion to anticipate on gentrification.
One of the solutions is pointing out alternative places for night-initiatives that have been driven out by gentrification. These will be strategic places where new initiatives either strengthen the identity of a cluster or are the missing link between clusters. In this way Rotterdam will showcase their diversity and have a more connected centrum.

Besides suggesting connections between the clusters, there are four spatial conditions. These conditions should be used when defining and designing places for the nightlife. To translate the input to spatial conditions we analyzed iconic places of Rotterdam. Iconic places were - among other things - iconic because of their progressive programming and unique appearance of the venue itself.
CLUB
Vacant buildings often have a low rent. This is attractive for cultural entrepreneurs for the night. On the other hand these initiatives contribute to the liveliness of an environment and are often functioning as the motor for reviving areas. CL UB
To strengthen the identity of the clusters the subcultures need to be visible. This way people can identify themselves with this parts of the city. Posterpillars, signs and murals are examples of visibility of subcultures that thrive in that area. CLUB
The public space around cultural places have to be “nightlife-proof. The combination of urban functions is crucial for a healthy and lively city. That is why creative solutions have to be designed simultaneously with the starting and growing of a new place. An awning that minimizes the diffusion of sounds, is a useful example. 23

Spaanse Polder, Rotterdam - The Netherlands Urban reconnaissance industrial areas sep 2018 - mar 2019 Spatial analyses
Van Nelle factory, icon of functionalism and Spaanse Polder dec 2018
The Spaanse Polder is an industrial area in the west of Rotterdam (close to Schiedam). This area knows a relatively high crime rate, because of the many small malifide businesses. In this area you can find the Van Nelle factory. This functionalistic icon from 1930 is on the UNESCO world heritage list. It now is a home to many creative entrepreneurs and sometimes festivals.
24
The potential of the Van Nelle factory and desire to decrease crime rate in the area means the municipality is looking for possibilities to redevelop the area. The ambition is to preserve the industrial companies because it is embedded in residential areas and therefor provide stable employment opportunities to Rotterdam. The iconic value of the Van Nelle factory and many creative entrepreneurs is reason to start studies. These studies are focussing on how the area can be transformed according the conditions of transit oriented development.
As an assistant designer my task was to explore the possibilities within environmental laws. These maps visualize the contours that withhold functions as housing to be build within these “environmental contours”. This project is in close cooperation with the City of Schiedam, because Spaanse Polder is close to the border of Schiedam. Therefore I also analyzed their situation and finally visualized all relevant areas and contours in one map.

Connectionsquare Neerbosch Location: Theme: Period: Type:
Nijmegen - The Netherlands Connection between elderly and youth sep 2017 - feb 2018 Integral minor programme
In conversation with streetcoaches of Neerbosch Oost, during workshop dec 2018
This neighborhood in Nijmegen was build in in the 1950’s. Elderly inhabitants feel intimidated by youths hanging on the streets. And youths feel discriminated by the elderly. To bond these groups together we involved them in the process of designing a square. This square was in front of a school and has a central location in the neighborhood. During a workshop we got input from streetcoaches, policymakers and locals. To get into the context we did interviews on the streets, a demographic analysis and a spatial analysis. During the spatial analysis it became clear that there is no clear hierarchy between the public spaces. This makes that people can find it hard to identify themselves with their environment. Therefor people don’t have a shared feeling of ownership for their neighborhood. This is needed to bond people with each other. 26

Solar panels in artform in Barranquilla may 2019
Sinds I was a kid I have been intrigued by nature and the way humanity uses it’s resources in maintaining daily life. Therefor I was excited when I could participate in the project “Sun as a Source. This project has as goal to make a vision on how solar panels can be integrated in Rotterdam. As assistant designer I had the chance to give my opinion on which places and ways of integrating are in line with the appearance Rotterdam wants to have. Therefore I attended in meetings and made visuals to substantiate my arguments.
