ROW HOUSES, MASSARELOS, OPORTO
prof. arch. luis rodrigues, architecture2 (2006)

This exercise was intended a housing development of 16 dwellings on the Campo Rou. The idea was fit the program in a strip building that suits the terrain freeing space around. This volume will land gently on the ground, resting on the terrain at the highest level and then on pilotis. The entry to each house had special care, revealing later an important element of the project. On the complete volume I started subtracting matter, creating holes more or less defined that would give me an expression to the whole composition. This became instrumental in the project because it was through these holes of lights and shadows created that mark the entries for each apartment, which is in stairs, symbolically pointed the entries. These beams of light that tear the building vertically, will also serve to illuminate the area garages that lies beneath.  Inside the houses, vary from predominantly T3 and T2 and punctually with T1 and T4. These cells are organized around the entrance and these spotlights, which organize the interior space. Normally the first floor is associated with service areas and social spaces, leaving the top floor for bedrooms, giving better privacy. All the different holes are transformed in spotlights in the interior, giving different environments throughout the day for each typology.

STUDY CENTER FOR SENIORS, OPORTO

This was a job that I liked a lot to do, it was the first time that we approach a more collective program, and motivated me a lot, being a program, not very usual and even pioneering, design a research center for 3rd age. A fundamental aspect that I found after a little research and analysis of existing works related to our program was the importance of living space, and shorten the circulation spaces to the fullest, always sticking living spaces. The work of Alvar Aalto, he increases the width corridor that runs throughout the building and joint spaces will be transparent to the outside.
For this project, some restrictions came from the previous exercise, a whole scheme of pathways to ensure no cutting or narrowing this route that connects the proposed square to the Rua Constituição. n seeking to maintain this path, I began to shape the building. In order not to create physical or pedestrian barrier this route, but should be adjacent, creating a new history in the route. The garden, very open, connects all the streets surrounding it, through organic pathways. What I did then was to create a well defined route to the street of the Constituição, and to create a wider area for the reception of the building with some parking and an area for cars or vans to transport of older people.
On the first floor tried to join the social areas, such as living room set, canteen, and others on the second floor classrooms and workshops, and administration. After being received in small square, we entered the lobby, very transparent to the outside with large glazed. Near this entrance I located the vertical access with stairs and elevators, toilets, bar and auditorium for a special occasion this part of the program can operate autonomously, the canteen is adjacent to the lobby facing the street of the Constitution, supported by kitchen which is connected to the storage room and technical area, supported a secondary entrance reserved for employees, facing the west gableThe canteen due to the shape of the building is also very open to the outside, and may even be extended to underneath the volume of the second floor to protect a little this area.

As can be seen throughout the project, I tried to avoid corridors, and this structure, a little organic allowed me to attaching living spaces along the route, such as near the entrance of the auditorium, where at intervals who does not want move at the bar in the lobby, can just wait near the entrance of the auditorium, where the garden enters the interior of the building. The auditorium suffers an inclination optimizing the space for its function. for events or partys, I have appointed living space combined with games room. Which has a removable wall between the spaces. The sports area is at the end of the building and is close to the second entrance of the study center. This sports area is composed of 3 items, pool, showers and gym, which I have decided as follows, on the entrance floor, the pool and the showers leaving the gym on the second floor with direct access by lift and stairs to entering area of the bathhouse. The pool benefits from a double height. The gym looks over the pool, and this gym has access to the second floor and can take advantage of both the courtyard and the balconies. Close to this area are the medical offices, social care and nursing, since this is the area of greatest risk. On the second floor are classrooms, as they are spaces that need a higher concentration and further away from the noises and distractions. Near the vertical access placed the toilets, halls and workshops that may merge in just one. The route of access to these spaces tried opening them as much as possible, either through skylights or large windows to the outside. On this floor, I created a large and very open living space, which makes the transition from class halls which is even supported by a private courtyard. The administration was placed near the Rua da Constituição with quick access from the lobby. The administration also benefits from a small balcony for both the office and for the boardroom.
I think my proposal highlights the desired values, resulting in a very pleasant both for seniors and for local people, with no dark places and emphasizing socializing, encouraging dialogue and relationships among the elderly.

CITIZEN’S BEREAU, PORTO

Situated in Francos, the terrain is a result of a demolition, resulting in a boundary by walls of poor quality. This expectant terrain has points that bring a different perspective on all the land, such as the viaduct, which also creates a gap. The terrain can is in a transition zone between a more traditional grid, with the streets Pedro Hispano and Lieutenant Valadim, and another busier, an output shaft of Porto, the Avenue Sidonio Pais. The program, a new generation of citizens bereau, is a concept of prime space, with great importance in society by focussing many important services to the people. In this sense I thought about a space with large and a large ceiling height in the central zone. The entry relates directly with the exhibition space. I was concerned not only with its buildings itself and created a garden, a ludic space that relates to the building. The building completes the block, freeing space on the inside creating a playful area related to the building, allowing to create convenient links. I eliminated the poor walls, extending the green area to the houses, giving a fresh new façade. The proximity of the building to the avenue Sidonio Pais, creates an urban front. However I tried to protect the building, “hiding it” through the topography and maintaining alignment of trees - making the transition from road to pedestrian - this attitude has led the entrance not to emerge directly from this busy avenue, creating a square within the proposal and not completely open to the avenue. To a solid volume, I pointed the entrance through a flap, which marks an exception piont, which relates to a curved inside in contrast to a rigid casing. The entry is made also by the great plan of glass that this façade has. With this glazing surface i propose not only mark the entrance but also an extend the interior to the square. On the entry arises the exhibition space and there are even a concierge desk. This space is related to the multimedia space.

This project consists of two floors, which are designed to store the program itself, where all the services and spaces are related to the better functioning. The interior is organized around the core, which relates the entire building, openning up vertically at all floors. Throughout these two floors I focus to mix the functional areas with living spaces or the circulation, guided by seating areas. The lower floor, a kind of social zone, don’t break the connection with two floors above, but pretends a diferent kind of ambient closer to the garden. For this floor i placed administrative services, cafeteria and restaurant and a space reserved for employees. The big plan of this glazed ground floor, is not only to strengthen this connection with the outside world but also due to lighting. During this project, the relation interior / outside, was always a concern, so i optimize and scale each windows to each space, framing the landscape, to the interior of the building. The water surface arises not only as a response to a need, of illumination, but also as an element of contemplation, a bridge between the green exterior garden, organic, to a solid volume. The ilumination is given by the big surface of glass on the front façade, and as well as the skylight, located in the central area, where all the building comunicates, verticaly and horizontaly. This will be supplemented, when the brightness is low, with artificial light, in a plane below the slab, hidden by a fabric which allows the passage of light creating, either by natural lighting or artificial lighting but diffuse constant. I chose white concrete, leaving the material apparent inside and out. On floor is white marble, but on the bottom floor, I chose a less cold material, wood.

“PREENCHER O VAZIO”, ARTIST HOUSE, VILA REAL
prof. arch. albino teixeira, thesis (2011)

The Artist House fit in this perspective to revitalize the historic center, promoted by CMVR witch request a home to host artists, under protocols and partnerships with Culturval. With a temporary perspective, this building has to perform several functions according the type of artists who can use it, including musicians, artists, actors, writers, and others. The program consists of 6 bedrooms, living room with a “kitchenette” and a multipurpose room, dedicated to the testing or work with good technical condition which is intended to make a direct interaction with the community and local artists. The first project idea comes from the attempt to explore the characteristics of the land, to see how it develops, the dimensions, the natural elements, the rocky outcrops, the relationship with the neighbors, marking clearly different periods. I designed an organic building, that will adapt to terrain features, approaching the natural landscape that surrounds the entire area, a constant discover. Its volumes, with different dimensions hierarchizes the importance of interior spaces, creating distinct moments in the composition. My proposal contrasts the position of Vila Velha Museum, total occupation of the lot, which seems to call clearance. A gap that will mark the entrance to the building. A “loophole” that will gradually get to show the building with distinct moments. In this narrative journey, begin by going through the volume down a dark zone, which creates a thinener path, with the beginning of the ramp, began to have a slight perspective on the natural elements of the land, the garden and the rocky outcrop, together with increasing luminosity. This ramp is curve and accentuates this dynamic entrance of progressive knowledge and approach to building, until it reaches a stop platform, contemplation that show us the entrance on a really higher elevation allowing us to have a wide perspective on the landscape. This panoramic terrace on the landscape, appears as an extension of the place itself, which projects into the street, but also for the whole environment. Passing through the block is allowed, however I tried to hide it, giving the sense of discovery, that does not overlap with the “square”, I intend that is also a living space. Thus, I took the rock that appears below the platform and carve in it stairs, creating a symbolic link, which takes us back to the history of the site. In the rooms, I wanted to focus on the function of rest and sleep, however my intention was freeing some extra space to another area, like living and / or working, facing east, because most suitting, but also because this area is facing a more playful and silent street which looks on the cliffs of Corgo and opens to the landscape. Creating a refuge for artists, a time of introspection and intimacy.

The entrance is important in the building’s running as it is from here that the building is developed, making all connections. Here is visible a set of situations that show how it works. When you enter this space its noticeble a garden right in front, which reveals a little more of the interior, which borders the access to the living room, which develops at a lower elevation, are noticeable two other links on the right by a portico with two meters and forty, which gives us a sense of just more private space (where are the toilets to support visitors and residents themselves, as well as access to the bedroom area), and left open ascending a ramp that makes connection with the multipurpose space. The “proximity” of the living room to the entry wants to favor an immediate visual relationship, despite the height difference, because I think this space is an important area of knowledge sharing, socializing, that I intend to highlight. The room is developed on street elevation and extends into an interior courtyard. The kitchen is located next to the vertical access and concentrates binding to the domestic courtyard, it also is as an extension of it. The lighting is given by the patio, but also through an opening in the ceiling. Is also worth noting that the area of the living room is a visual linked with the multipurpose space volume that “lands” on the main room, resulting in a triple high ceiling. The work area requires special attention because it is the part of the building behind a new special feature for the home that requires reinterpretation of the typology. This new environment has been designed in order to establish a relationship of the interaction between artists, allowing the use of removable panels to arrange the space according to the needs. This volume that lands on the social room, I tried make it pure, but at the same time dynamic, well lit, and accountable to the needs of this type of multi-purpose space. The access is done from the entrance ramp, completing an entire dynamic path.

This time in JBMG has been a very busy period, here I’ve learned a lot. This new oportunity, make me move to a new city, and this was a new experience for me living in Sintra (Lisbon). With a young and capable group, I’ve already participated in diverse projects in the most diverse areas, such as private housing, closed condominiums, housing urbanizations, office and commercial spaces, temporary exhibition structures, restaurants and bars, educational, public establishments, areas for the public, urban planning and master plans, etc. Therefore, characteristics like multi-disciplinarity, diversity and versatility enable the scale of operations to range from the context of territory right down to interior design and furniture.
