Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit visual arts education organization located in beautiful Upcountry Maui. Since 1934, Hui No‘eau has provided an accessible space for the community to experience and enjoy the visual arts. Throughout the year, the Hui hosts art classes for adults and children, artist lectures, fine art exhibitions, events, tours, and educational outreach programs. Working artist studios are nestled across the grounds and a gallery shop featuring artwork created by Hui members is located in the main house. As a communitybased organization, we thank you for helping us continue our mission of unlocking creativity through exceptional visual arts education and enhancing this endeavor through the preservation of the historic Kaluanui Estate.

It is my pleasure to present another season of classes, exhibitions, events, and more! This summer, the Hui welcomed 2018 Artist in Residence Mazatl to Maui to create an incredible installation based on his experiences at Auwahi, a dry forest area on southwest Haleakala (page 3). The Hui is grateful to Dr. Art Medeiros and Auwahi Forest Restoration Project for collaborating with us on this wonderful endeavor. The Hui is also thrilled to continue to partner with East Maui Watershed Partnership for a fourth year to present Malama Wao Akua (page 6). Always a spectacular collaboration between artists and conservationists, this exhibition celebrates the native species of Maui Nui. As 2018 draws to a close, it is with heavy hearts that we remember the Hui angels lost this year, including our beloved John Hoxie and David Florence. Both John and David meant so much to our Hui community. In honor of their countless volunteer hours, generosity, and endless passion for Hui No‘eau, we have established the John W. remembering john hoxie John W. Hoxie, Jr.

It is with a heavy heart that we remember Hui angel and ambassador John W. Hoxie, Jr. John devoted his retirement years to a variety of civic causes and especially to his passion: Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center and the Kaluanui Estate. He was instrumental in the successful campaign to purchase Kaluanui in 2005. John served as Board President and Vice President and chaired numerous committees. He was a woodworker, patron, and generous supporter of all of the Hui’s programs. John worked tirelessly to ensure that Hui No‘eau remains accessible to the entire community so that everyone may experience the “WOW” moment that he felt the first time he took a woodworking class at the Hui so many years ago. “Over a decade has passed since I took my first woodworking class, but I continue to be actively involved in many aspects of the Hui’s development and plans for its future because I want to ensure that many members of the community and the public have the opportunity to experience what making art can do for your life and to enjoy the historic Kaluanui Estate. By supporting the Hui, together we can continue to create a safe, accessible, beautiful gathering place for all to learn, visit and celebrate.” – John W. Hoxie, Jr., “Why I Give”

To honor John’s commitment to visual arts education, specifically woodworking, and the beloved Kaluanui Estate, Hui No‘eau has established the John W. Hoxie, Jr. Kaluanui Memorial Fund. This memorial fund will directly impact successful completion of Hui No‘eau’s Bud Schaefer, John Hoxie Woodworking & Innovation Center and will support the Hui’s ongoing capital improvement and maintenance for years into the future. As we continue to celebrate John’s life of dedication to Maui and to our Hui community, it is our hope that this memorial fund will create opportunities for the next generation of students and artists in woodworking and help to ensure that Kaluanui remains accessible to the public. With your help, this fund will pay forward John’s legacy of excellence and generosity and help the organization care for Kaluanui with the level of passion and love that John shared with all of us. Mazatl is a graphic maker from Mexico City. His work includes largescale woodcuts in public areas as well as graphic murals. He is dedicated to collaborating with groups, collectives, artists, and movements that seek social, political, and environmental justice in local communities.

Kill Joy is a printmaker who lives in Mexico City and is inspired by mythology, nature, and Memento Mori.

In May & June 2018, Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center presented GRAFICA: AUWAHI — a project in collaboration with 2018 Artist in Residence Mazatl, Visiting Artist Kill Joy, and the Auwahi Forest Restoration Project! Over 6 weeks, 2018 residency activities included: • Artist research, including interviews with residents • Studio visits with Mazatl (open to the public!) • Printmaking Field Trips led by Mazatl, Kill Joy, and Hui Teaching Artists for King Kekaulike Hawaiian Immersion Students and Maui High ACOM students • Na Keiki No‘eau After School Art Program at Makawao Elementary School Visits with Mazatl • Installation of GRAFICA: AUWAHI mural in the Hui’s History Room • Creation of two original woodblock prints by Mazatl and Kill Joy, featured in the Hui’s Wahi Pana Auwahi Exhibition and recognized by the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts Art in Public Places Program. On Saturday, June 30, the Hui celebrated Family Day with hands-on art projects, live demonstrations by Hui Teaching Artists, music, food, and creative fun for all ages. This year’s Family Day also honored the opening of the Wahi Pana Auwahi Exhibition in collaboration with Auwahi Forest Restoration Project (page 6) and Hui No‘eau’s 2018 Artist in Residence Mazatl (page 3). The Hui’s glassblowing, printmaking, jewelry, and ceramics studios were all bustling with creative fun—and an arts-based scavenger hunt encouraged keiki to explore the beautiful Kaluanui Estate! Guests shopped, sipped, and support local artists at Hui No‘eau’s Art Market: Crafts and Drafts (root beer, that is!), featuring Made on Maui product vendors and root beer generously donated by the Maui Brewing Co. Live entertainment by Halau Wehiwehi O Leilehua, Wes Furomoto, and Paula Fuga made the day incredibly special! Pono Pies/Maui Breadfruit Company, Maui Empanadas, Ono Pono Acai Bowls, and VitaliTea Kombucha kept everyone well fueled for a day celebrating the visual arts and reforestation. Elemental Design Exhibition Opening

Cudra Clover Solo Artist Exhibition Opening

Hui No‘eau’s Solo Artist Exhibition challenges artists to create a cohesive and innovative body of work and provides the unique opportunity for artists to be personally involved in all facets of their exhibition. On March 9, the Hui celebrated the opening of solo artist Cudra Clover’s installation, Hysteria. Hysteria explores the subject of overstimulation through textiles and multimedia. Along with a selection of biomorphic silk paintings, Cudra presented elements of these paintings combined and manipulated in different ways—as wallpaper, upholstery, touchscreen visuals, metal prints, and more. On opening night, guests dressed in red and were amazed by the projection mapping on the main house. In collaboration with Maui Glass Artists Association, Hui No‘eau celebrated the opening of Elemental Design: Contemporary Craft in Glass, Metal & Wood on April 27. This dynamic exhibition challenged artists to explore these versatile media in all of their creative forms. The Hui welcomed University of Hawai‘i at Manoa Professor of Art Rick Mills to offer his unique perspective and to shape this exhibition. “Overall the quality and range of work entered in this year’s exhibition is impressive and demonstrates a sincere commitment to art making,” said Mills of his jurying experience. With 39 pieces selected from 115 entries, Elemental Design represents a truly incredible collection of works. The Hui sends our warmest mahalo to Rick Mills and our heartfelt congratulations to all the exhibiting artists.

GRAFICA: AUWAHI with Artist in Residence Mazatl Open now through 2019

Auwahi dry forest on southwest Haleakala is one of the last representatives of a nearly lost and biologically unique Hawaiian forest type. For many Hawaiian species, including several with great cultural importance, Auwahi appears to be their last stand. Hui No‘eau and the Auwahi Forest Restoration Project are thrilled to collaborate with Mazatl, the Hui’s 2018 Artist in Residence, to create GRAFICA: AUWAHI—a mural installation in the Hui’s “History Room.” During his 6 week residency, Mazatl created this mural with inspiration from his experience on Maui and at Auwahi. Please see page 3 for more information on this incredible work of art! September 14 – November 9 Receiving Day: August 28 / 9:00 am – 6:00 pm Opening Reception: September 14 / 5:00 – 8:00 pm Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center in collaboration with East Maui Watershed Partnership (EMWP) brings you Malama Wao Akua (Caring for the Realm of the Gods)–a juried art exhibition celebrating the native species of Maui Nui (Maui, Lana‘i, Moloka‘i, Kaho‘olawe). We invite Maui artists to explore our watersheds and use their creative talents to raise awareness about the importance of protecting native species. Selected artwork should be successful in sharing knowledge of the watersheds and native species with others in a meaningful way. Artwork will also be selected based upon a number of criteria, including originality of concept, creativity, technique, professionalism, and presentation. Our hope is that Maui artists of all ages will explore our watersheds and express the value that native species have within our daily life. This exhibition is sure to provide powerful visuals that celebrate Maui’s native plant and animal life. A jurying team with expertise in both art and conservation will select from among the pool of entries. Works in any medium are welcome!

Charissa Brock is a fiber artist working with bamboo. She integrates wood, glass, paper, and thread as visual accents and structural components. Her abstract sculptures are crafted using basketry, woodworking, and fiber art techniques. Charissa earned her BFA in Glass from Center For Creative Studies, College of Art and Design and her MFA in Fibers at Tyler School of Art/Temple University. Her artwork is in private collections nationwide as well as Arizona State University Museum, the Rivermark Hotel, and the Hyatt Regency Maui. charissabrock.com

Bamboo Baskets

Saturday & Sunday, 2 days September 15 & 16 / 9:00 am – 3:00 pm (Saturday) & 9:00 am – 4:00 pm (Sunday) When traveling through Japan, bamboo baskets are everywhere. Baskets are used to hold everyday objects, in tea ceremonies, and carried as purses. Through demonstrations and images, the class will learn about bamboo as a plant and art material. Most importantly, students will make a bamboo basket, which can be used as a purse or container to hold objects. Baskets will be made out of pre-prepared bamboo strips. Volcano, Hawai‘i October 13 & 14 Ira Ono is a multi-faceted visual and performing artist who is well known for his fresh and innovative work featuring a wide range of media and subjects. His works are featured in the Hawai‘i State Art Museum and private collections in the United States, Europe, and Japan. Ira is the founder/owner of Volcano Garden Arts on the Big Island of Hawai‘i and is the founder of annual Trash Art shows on Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island. iraono.com

Pure Collage

Saturday & Sunday, 2 days October 13 & 14 / 10:00 am – 4:00 pm Everyone has personal memorabilia— small artifacts such as love letters, old photos, newspaper clippings, a piece of a favorite childhood toy, an item belonging to a lost love. In this workshop, participants will learn to use a number of different media and techniques, including collage/ mixed media, faux finishes, mono prints, and shadow box framing to transform these items into one-of-a-kind works of art with deep personal significance. Kanani Miyamoto is a passionate printmaker, originally from Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Her training in printmaking is rooted in tradition, but she pushes the standards of printmaking in the form of large scale mixed media original prints and installations. She combines copper plate etchings with screen prints and wood block prints to create rich and unique installations. Kanani teaches printmaking to K-12 students with RACC’s Right Brain Initiative and NW Noggin’. The King started Hale Naua as he sought to revitalize older cultural practices of Hawaiian indigenous people that had waned after the introduction of Western religious and social customs. Remembering David Florence The Hui community and jewelry department mourn the loss of Hui angel David Florence. David became involved with Hui No‘eau through his loving wife and one of the Hui’s most devoted and passionate volunteers, Sandra Florence. Together, the pair worked countless hours and generously donated to Hui fundraisers and events. When Sandra signed David up for a jewelry class, he was a beginner and quickly began falling in love with the art form—always creating new work for his family and friends. David’s booming voice and powerful presence will be dearly missed. In honor of David Florence’s commitment to visual arts education and passion for jewelry making and metalsmithing, Hui No‘eau has established the David Florence Memorial Fund. This memorial fund will support Hui No‘eau’s Jewelry Studio and Jewelry Studio Programs, which David loved and utilized so often. The fund will specifically support: • Repair/maintenance of tools, equipment, and facilities; • Purchase of new state of the art tools and equipment; • Support for visiting artist workshops in metalsmithing; and • Scholarships for students to attend metalsmithing classes. While working on individual projects, students will practice the foundational elements Cups, plates, bowls, tiles and more! In this introductory class, students will of metalsmithing that all jewelry professionals know: create their own functional art as they explore the handling of clay using cutting, drilling, piercing, and soldering metal. Projects wheel throwing, handbuilding, glazing, and texturing techniques. Maui’s Young Artists “Explore & Discover” the Visual Arts through Field Trips! Spring is an exciting time of year for field trips at Hui No‘eau! Over the past few months, the Hui welcomed more than 375 students from Kahului Elementary School, Haiku Elementary School, Kalama Intermediate School, King Kekaulike High School, Lili‘uokalani Trust, and Maui High School. Through the continued generous support of the Samuel N. & Mary Castle Foundation, the Hui inspired an additional 365 preschool aged children through hands-on field trips.

Students created Monet inspired pastels with collaged ‘ōhi‘a trees, made ipu hōkiokio & pala‘ie with Visiting Artists and Art with Aloha practitioners Lloyd Kumula‘au Sing and Haunani Balino-Sing, learned silkscreen printing from Visiting Artist Emily Gui, and carved and printed their very own linoleum blocks with a native plant theme. Together all of these programs encourage creativity, build self-expression, and foster a love of learning! Mahalo to the Hui angels who support these programs and make our community a more vibrant place to live! SIGN UP TODAY! Pre-registration is required for all Hui classes. Full payment is required at the time of registration. To ensure enrollment in a class, we recommend registering at least one week prior to the start date of class. We require seven days notice to issue a refund or class credit less a $25 processing fee. Memberships are non-refundable. If the person registering has a disability and needs accommodation to be able to fully participate in a class, the Hui should be alerted at the time of registration (at least one week in advance of class start date) to discuss any accommodations needed. LOCATION: Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center and the historic Kaluanui Estate are located just a few minutes drive from Makawao town on the slopes of Haleakala.
