Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit visual arts education organization located in beautiful Upcountry Maui. Since 1934, Hui No‘eau has provided an accessible space for the community to experience and enjoy the visual arts. Throughout the year, the Hui hosts art classes for adults and children, artist lectures, fine art exhibitions, events, tours, and educational outreach programs. Working artist studios are nestled across the grounds and a gallery shop featuring artwork created by Hui members is located in the main house. As a community-based organization, we thank you for helping us continue our mission of unlocking creativity through exceptional visual arts education and enhancing this endeavor through the preservation of the historic Kaluanui Estate.

Summertime is always inspiring as the Hui welcomes around 200 Maui youth to participate in nine weeks of Camp Kaluanui and Art Academy programs (pages 17-18). From jewelry and metalsmithing to Hawaiian art forms to science and sculpture (and so much more!), the Hui offers engaging art classes for every student to enjoy.

Maui’s keiki will not be the only ones unlocking their creativity at Kaluanui Estate this summer! This issue of Create also features many wonderful classes and workshops for adults, including 14 classes taught by 8 visiting artists. Hui No‘eau is thrilled to collaborate with Larry Smith to bring the SixWord Memoirs global phenomenon to Maui, combining the written word with visual arts in this dynamic exhibition in 2019 (page 6). Finally, I express my sincerest gratitude to all of the generous donors who supported Hui No‘eau in 2018. Mahalo to all those who allow this community to flourish, including our donors, members, artists, teachers, volunteers, and our newest community partners. We are so grateful to all of you! Hui No‘eau’s annual President’s Reception celebrates and recognizes the Hui’s top donors, volunteers, board members, teaching artists, legislators, and community members whose commitment and generosity make it possible for Hui No‘eau to continue our mission. On January 10th, this cherished group gathered together for a special evening, which marked the preview opening of Hui No‘eau’s 2019 Annual Juried Exhibition and featured delicious pupu by Chefs Marc Panzalan and Brandon Sijalbo and hula by Ke Kula O Pi‘ilani and Halau Ke‘ala Kahinano O Puna. Annual Juried Exhibition Opening — January 11, 2019

The Hui No‘eau Annual Juried Exhibition is a selective and prestigious exhibition that showcases new work created by a talented community of local and mainland artists. Open to works in all media, this exhibition offers an opportunity for artists to share their ideas, inspirations, and creativity in a public gallery space. This year, the Hui welcomed Jurors Ed Lane and Jennifer Owen to offer their unique perspective and shape our 2019 exhibition. With 66 pieces selected from 262 entries, this year’s exhibition represents a truly incredible collection of works. The Hui sends our warmest mahalo to our jurors who could not have been more kind, thoughtful, and hardworking throughout the entire jurying process. Retrospective: Douglas Chun – Full Circle March 8 – April 12

On March 8, Hui No‘eau celebrated the opening of Full Circle into Emptiness, a retrospective of beloved Maui Artist Douglas Chun’s work. The Retrospective Series was designed to acknowledge the contributions of individuals who have made a profound influence on local art and to share their work and ideas with the community. Hui No‘eau invites the community to continue celebrating the art and personal metamorphosis of Douglas Chun, an extraordinary artist and well-loved friend in the community. In the last two decades, Douglas and his wife Janet cultivated the gardens surrounding their home studio on the slopes of Haleakala. The beautiful natural environment inspired his abundant creativity. Douglas lived his life with simplicity, quiet intelligence, and the pursuit of harmony as well as inner joy. His art transitioned from realistic architectural illustrations to impressionistic watercolor landscapes to, eventually, large dramatic abstracts. This transformation was enriched by the precise practice of traditional Chinese calligraphy, which deeply informed his spiritual and artistic journey. Born and raised in China, Douglas attended Honolulu Art Academy and San Francisco Art Institute. A master in architectural illustration, his firm, Chun/Ishimaru, served the design profession for over 35 years throughout the West Coast. Douglas passed away in the summer of 2017.

Themed Juried Exhibition: Six-Word Memoirs

June 7 – July 26 Receiving Day: May 28 / 9:00 am – 4:00 pm Opening Reception: June 7 / 5:00 – 7:00 pm Legend has it that Ernest Hemingway was once challenged to write a story in only six words. His response? “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.” In November 2006, Larry Smith, founder of SMITH Magazine, gave the six-word novel a personal twist by asking his community to describe their lives in exactly six words. They sent in short life stories in droves, from the bittersweet (“Cursed with cancer, blessed with friends”) and poignant (“I still make coffee for two”) to the inspirational (“From migrant worker to NASA astronaut”) and hilarious (“Married by Elvis, divorced by Friday”). And the Six-Word Memoir project was born. Since then, Six-Word Memoir project has become a global phenomenon and a bestselling book series. Six-Word Memoirs have been featured in hundreds of media outlets from NPR to The New Yorker, covered on tens of thousands of blogs, and, as of Summer 2010, can be found inside 1 million Honest Tea bottle caps.

GRAFICA: AUWAHI with Artist in Residence Mazatl Open Daily / 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

In May & June 2018, Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center presented GRAFICA: AUWAHI—a project in collaboration with 2018 Artist in Residence Mazatl, Visiting Artist Kill Joy, and the Auwahi Forest Restoration Project. Auwahi dry forest on southwest Haleakala is one of the last representatives of a nearly lost and biologically unique Hawaiian forest type. For many Hawaiian species, including several with great cultural importance, Auwahi appears to be their last stand. Mazatl is a graphic maker from Mexico City. His work includes largescale woodcuts in public areas as well as graphic murals. He is dedicated to collaborating with groups, collectives, artists, and movements that seek social, political, and environmental justice in local communities. Kill Joy is a printmaker who lives in Mexico City and is inspired by mythology, nature, and Memento Mori. Mahalo to the Laila Twigg-Smith Art Fund of Hawai‘i Community Foundation for their generous support in making this residency possible.

Karen Kunc received her BFA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and her MFA from Ohio State University. She is currently the Willa Cather Professor of Art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Her prints and artist books have been shown in the US, Europe, and Asia. Her works are held in numerous private, public, and university collections including: MOMA; Library of Congress; Milwaukee Art Museum; Joslyn Art Museum; Smithsonian Museum of American Art; Jyväskylä Art Museum, Finland; Portland Art Museum, Oregon. She has taught workshops around the world, including in Egypt, Italy, Finland, Bangladesh, Poland, Japan, France, Mexico, Iceland; and she has lectured as a visiting artist at over 200 institutions. David Peterson is a Professor of Art/Metalsmithing at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY. He received his BA from SUNY Geneseo (NY) and his MFA from Indiana State University. Andrea Peterson is an independent studio metalsmith and lecturer at Skidmore College. This exciting workshop will awaken the possibilities of the woodcut printing process for the beginning and advanced printmaker. This approach is not technically tradition bound, but is inventive with contemporary, creative methods, that can be spontaneous, simple, and direct. Through demonstrations and discussions, students will explore cutting techniques, oil-based inks, and printing with the etching press and by hand. Participants will go from designing their images and cutting blocks to printing a limited-edition print series using a variety of methods and individual discoveries. Friday & Saturday, 2 days May 17 & 18 / 9:00 am – 4:00 pm This workshop will explore “anticlastic raising” as a means of transforming flat sheet metal into dynamic, fluid forms, ideally suited for jewelry and small sculpture. With the aid of specialized hammers and stakes, students will learn how to strategically stretch and compress thin sheet metal into highly dimensional, lightweight forms that are surprisingly strong and flexible. Sandcasting for Jewelry and Small Sculpture Sunday & Monday, 2 days May 26 & 27 / 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

This class will explore a range of techniques for creating jewelry and small sculpture with sandcasting. Unlike other methods, sandcasting is fast (often requiring less than an hour from idea to completion) and because it does not result in the loss of the original wax model, it is ideal for creating multiples. Participants will learn all aspects of the process, from carving wax patterns and making sand molds, to casting metal and finishing their own unique pieces. Prerequisite: Some experience with jewelry and metals is recommended, but not required. Glass on Metal: An Introduction to Enameling Thursday & Friday, 2 days May 30 & 31 / 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

Experience the colorful possibilities as you learn to create vitreous enamels! In this workshop, you will learn basic enameling techniques, including proper preparation and firing methods to assure color quality and clarity. Combining multiple layers of color and using under glazes, enamel threads, and foils are just some of the possibilities! If you have previously attended Andrea’s workshops at the Hui, more advanced instruction (i.e. cloisonné and plique a jour) may be arranged. RITA SABLER

Portland, Oregon June 14 & 15 Rita Sabler has happily trotted the world documenting its wonders in her sketchbooks. Since 2016, Rita has been teaching Urban Sketching courses at PNCA. Rita has presented lectures and workshops on sketching, inspiring diverse audiences to cultivate a lifelong passion for urban sketching. Her work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions around Portland. Rita’s main areas of interest are reportage illustration, travel sketching, and visual storytelling. Rita holds a B.A. degree in Psychology and Art, an M.A. in Linguistics, and a Masters in Interface Design from The Elisava School of Design in Barcelona. portlandsketcher.com

Session 1: Dot, Line, Texture, Sketch! Friday, 1 day June 14 / 9:00 am – 1:00 pm Session 2: Making your World Come Alive with Watercolor Saturday, 1 day June 15 / 9:00 am – 1:00 pm Urban sketching workshops will give you the necessary tools and techniques to develop a lifelong passion for drawing on location and telling stories using your sketches. Urban sketchers use simple portable tools and the power of direct observation to document their world, describe their experiences, capture city scenes, architecture, characters, and events in their sketchbooks. Standing on the cross-section of art, architecture, and journalism, urban sketching teaches students to become keen observers. Both workshops will cultivate the ability to draw quickly from direct observation, pulling inspiration from our surroundings, combining words and illustrations to create vivid, funny, and memorable snapshots of everyday life. During the first workshop, students will focus on achieving expressive, fluid, and confident ink lines to quickly portray subjects. During the second workshop, participants will work on bringing stories and characters to life with the help of watercolor. It is highly recommended that students take both sessions. Koichi Yamamoto was born in Osaka, Japan. He received his BFA at the Pacific Northwest College of Art and then moved to Krakow, Poland to produce works and study copper engravings at the Bratislava Academy of Fine Arts in the Slovak Republic. He studied in the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan, Poland and then completed his MFA at the University of Alberta, Canada. He also worked as a textile designer in Fredericia, Denmark. ABBIE RABINOWITZ Pahoa, Hawai‘i August 17 - 24

Abbie Rabinowitz is a master watercolorist and en plein air painter. She earned her BFA from SUNY Purchase and her MFA in painting from Western Connecticut State University. She was born and raised in Connecticut and spent over 30 years in the San Francisco Bay Area. Abbie is now a resident of the Big Island where she has been passionately inspired to paint en plein air landscapes using both watercolor and oil. Abbie has exhibited her work in galleries on both coasts, in Europe, and is featured in private collections. She paints in an expressive, painterly style using nature as her muse. Saturday, 1 day August 17 / 10:00 am – 4:00 pm In this workshop, inspiration will come from the beautiful, natural surroundings at Hui No‘eau. Abbie will introduce various watercolor techniques, including washes, working wet on wet, dry brush, layering, and more! The class will explore ways to create space, shape, and the illusion of depth. Watercolor as a fluid medium allows one to reflect atmospheric elements as well as finer details seen in nature. Intuitive Watercolor

Sunday, 1 day August 18 / 10:00 am – 4:00 pm Let’s focus on experimentation and fun! Using watercolor and collage, students will develop their own vocabulary with paint as a form of self-expression. Watercolor allows us to explore our use of control while challenging our ability to let go. Each student will be encouraged to experiment with the unpredictable quality of this fluid medium. Abstract Painting

Saturday & Sunday, 2 days August 24 & 25 / 10:00 am – 4:00 pm Based on the elements of Abstract Expressionism, students will explore rhythm, form, and movement using line, shape, and color. Abbie will introduce basic exercises to encourage experimentation and personal expression. The class will paint on large size paper using acrylic paints in black & white and color. Born and raised on her grandparent’s Kula farm, Rose Pi‘ilani Bailey is a hula dancer and Hawaiian arts practitioner. She has learned family traditions that have been passed down for many generations and takes pride in using many native Hawaiian plants and materials in her lei making and other hana no‘eau (arts). NALU ANDRADE

Kele Kanahele was born and raised on the island of Ni‘ihau. Starting at age 5, he learned to make Ni‘ihau shell lei from his grandma and grandpa—and completed his first 36” pikake lei at twelve years old. He is a master Ni‘ihau shell lei designer and has traveled around Hawai‘i, the continental United States, and Japan to teach workshops. He also teaches ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i! He enjoys sharing his knowledge with students and seeing them successfully make beautiful lei and earrings.

Nalu Andrade has been carving ‘ohe kapala and bone makau and ko‘i for about 30 years. In 2015, Nalu created his business, Na Maka Kahiko. Blending the old with the new, he created his hand carved ‘ohe kapala earrings inspired by designs found at the Bishop Museum. Nalu sells not only earrings, but also hair picks, ‘ohe kapala stamps, bone makau and ko‘i, ‘ohe hana ihu, ‘ohe pu, and hu ‘oeoe. Nalu believes in always growing his skill as a carver and has found inspiration through his workshops. This is the ultimate hand-building technique, which allows an intimacy and meditation with the clay since your hands are the primary tools. Digital Photography Composition: Learning to See — Level 1+ Aubrey Hord Thursday & Friday, 2 days May 16 & 17 / 9:00 am – 1:00 pm If you are already familiar with the basics of your DSLR camera (film or digital) and feel comfortable shooting with the manual setting, this hands-on workshop will help you to “see” more creatively. The Hui visits Wailuku town murals (and an old friend!)

In February 2019, a group of talented artists from Maui (and beyond!) painted murals throughout Wailuku and Central Maui in partnership with the PangeaSeed Foundation. While this massive mural project was underway, some of the Hui staff took a walk around Wailuku town in support of the project and to admire the artists’ work. Staff also stopped to visit the Hui’s 2012 Artist in Residence project, “Na Wai ‘Eha,” one of the first large-scale public murals on Maui, located on the corner of Market and Main Streets in Wailuku.

Created in October 2012 by Artist in Residence Erik Okdeh in consultation and partnership with members of the community, “Na Wai ‘Eha” shares a vision of the four great waters flowing from the West Maui Mountains. Okdeh worked in the Hui studios to create his mural and mosaic before it was transferred in panels to Wailuku where he assembled the final work of art. Okdeh was one of two mural artists that the Hui brought to Maui in 2012 with support from the Laila Twigg-Smith Art Fund of the Hawai‘i Community Foundation. Artist in Residence Shira Walinsky’s mural is located on site at Hui No‘eau between the glass, jewelry, and ceramics studios. Both Okdeh and Walinsky shared invaluable knowledge about community projects and murals with the Hui, calling upon their experiences living in Philadelphia, the “city of murals,” and working with the renowned City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program. As a longtime supporter of public art, Hui No‘eau is thrilled to see murals popping up all over Maui. Public art influences how we connect with places and people, provides an opportunity for conversation, and encourages greater understanding of other cultures and perspectives. Congratulations to all the participating artists for helping to make our communities more vibrant places to live, work, and play!

“Art community is vibrant & healthy” with support from Hui No‘eau according to 2019 Art Maui Juror The Hui is a thriving center for arts education, supporting art and artists all across Maui, Hawai‘i, and beyond. Every year, the Hui welcomes more than 600 artists to enter up to 8 exhibitions in our historic gallery, which is open daily for locals and visitors to explore and enjoy. The Hui also provides year-round support for artists and creative thinkers at every stage of their creative journey, whether they are taking an art class for the first time or are an art professional. Together, Hui students and teaching artists create the heart of the Hui, a vibrant center of creativity on Maui unlike anywhere else on the island. At the Hui, our focus is arts education through hands-on learning in professionally equipped studios. Many of the facilities, tools, and equipment available at the Hui would cost well beyond the budget of an artist with a home studio. The studios at the Hui provide vital resources for learning and continued creative growth. Beyond the Hui, our students and teachers share their vision and talents with the entire Maui community. Our Hui family of artists have their own creative businesses, sell their work in boutiques and galleries, create public art, and contribute to exhibitions at other institutions. 2019 Art Maui Juror Lisa A. Yoshihara recognized the value of Hui No‘eau in an article published March 3 in the Maui News.

“It was very rewarding to see new artists during the jury process. It is a sign that the art community is vibrant and healthy. The strength of certain media like printmaking and jewelry making came through strong, which is a testament to having an art center like the Hui No’eau [Visual Arts Center in Makawao] that provides essential facilities, instruction and synergy, a place to learn, share, create and collaborate.”

A bighearted supporter of the Hui has made a very generous pledge to match up to $100,000 each year over 5 years in support of Hui No‘eau’s future Bud Schaefer, John Hoxie Woodworking & Innovation Center and the Gage Schubert Building. Your support helps the Hui to: • Provide scholarships to adults and children in need who would otherwise lack access to arts education; • Create a space for authentic cultural exchange between practitioners, artists, and students of all ages in Art with Aloha classes in Hawaiian art forms; • Engage students in local title 1 public schools in the visual arts through our new Na Keiki No‘eau after school outreach program. Participating students gain confidence and creative skills that will help them in school, at home, and in their future careers; • Inspire local educators with new techniques, and give them the tools, strategies, and confidence to incorporate more visual thinking into school lessons through Hui professional development and visiting artist classes; • Expose young students to new experiences in field trips to the Hui where students create their own artwork, observe new art forms in action, develop observational skills and vocabulary, and experience a museum type gallery setting for the first time; • Present eight fine art exhibitions that provide a vital place for local artists to share their voice and vision with the world; • Encourage interaction, learning, and community in the Hui’s Open Studios program, where students and artists gather to create artwork in professional studio spaces. Stop by the Hui’s front desk

Pre-registration is required for all Hui classes. Full payment is required at the time of registration. To ensure enrollment in a class, we recommend registering at least one week prior to the start date of class. We require seven days notice to issue a refund or class credit less a $25 processing fee. Memberships are non-refundable. If the person registering has a disability and needs accommodation to be able to fully participate in a class, the Hui should be alerted at the time of registration (at least one week in advance of class start date) to discuss any accommodations needed.

Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center and the historic Kaluanui Estate are located just a few minutes drive from Makawao town on the slopes of Haleakala.
