I chose Bembo typeface, which started from the early printing era in Europe, but is still being widely used nowadays.

to present the typeface to the audience. I realized that this is one of the few typefaces that has been used for several hundred years. I was amazed by how well its design held up in so many different societies. The project was a chance to introduce to people the background of Bembo and its use in our digital world today. I used color, layout, and composition that reflected the Venetian print era with today’s visual language to present a historical typeface to today’s audience.

Eileen Chang/ S E P T E M B E R 3 0 , 19 2 0 – S E P T E M B E R 8 , 19 9 5

She was one of the most influential modern Chinese writers. Her fiction writings are noted for dealing with the tensions between men and women in love. She was focused on the everyday life in 1940s Shanghai and Japanese-occupied Hong Kong. “Had it not been for the political division between the Nationalist and Communist Chinese, she would have almost certainly won a Nobel Prize” was the compliment given to her by the poet and University of Southern California professor Dominic Cheung.

Shen Congwen/ D E C E M B E R 28 , 19 0 2 – M AY 10 , 19 8 8

He is considered to be one of the greatest modern Chinese writers. His writing is distinguished with regional culture and identity, and combining the vernacular style with classical Chinese writing techniques. He was considered the most important of the “native soil” writers in modern Chinese literature. In 1988, he was slated to win the Nobel Prize, but due to his death, it was not awarded.

Lao She/ F E B R U A R Y 3 , 18 9 9 – A U G US T 24 , 19 6 6

He was a noted Chinese novelist and dramatist, and was one of the most significant figures of 20th-century Chinese literature. His most famous works are Rickshaw Boy and the play Teahouse. His works are noted for their vivid use of the Beijing dialect. Many of his plays and fictions are being adapted into films after his death, like This Life of Mine, Dragon Beard Ditch, Rickshaw Boy, The Teahouse, The Crescent Moon, The Drum Singers, and The Divorce.

Is it possible to translate the bizarre fantasy of Fellini into a film festival? [ objective ]

[ solution ]

To choose a filmmaker and design a film festival

After researching and watching Federico Fellini’s

The film festival consists of many different design

films in the festival: La Dolce Vita, 8½, Juliet

materials: a poster, catalogue, app, advertising and

of the Spirits, Satyricon, Fellini’s Casanova, and

tickets. The design concept is based on a common theme from the films picked for the festival. I chose the Italian director Federico Fellini. His works are inspiring and influential for their imagination, based on Jung’s theory, depicting the unconscious desire of dissatisfied people.

City of Women. The common theme among all of these are the disillusioned mid-life crises people face and the fantasy world they imagine in order to escape their problems. The visual is a dreamy and distorted world, the playful fantasy in those people’s minds. I photographed images containing that message to match with the festival style. The visual outcome is a bit irrational and playful for the audience to escape into Fellini’s fantasy world.

I am interested in the inner life of plants, for their organic systems of sustaining themselves and coexisting with the outside world.

Its existence is fundamental to our living world. The effective way to communicate this topic is to use an organic type treatment and blend the type with images. The color palette is unobstrusive.

Having farmers’ markets close by can make people pay more attention to eating vegetables and fruits.

INSIGHT 2/

Healthy eating campaigns by college health centers haven’t attracted much students’ attention.

INSIGHT 3/

Being more familiar with available healthy eating choices can make students aware of their nutrition and how easy it is to improve it.
