Cliff Garden West Coast California 1st Year Project

2 3 4 The Garden Project, located on a cliff off the coast of California, was one of my earliest projects. Geometrically, the golden proportion is applied through the design. The spaces are inspired by a traditional Chinese garden. Bamboo partitions are utilized as ‘translucent’ screens that simoultaneously divide and connect the spaces. A water feature leads circulation through the garden and flows into the ocean.

The Kansas City Craft Center functions as a museum and an art studio. It acts as a communication space for artists and visitors. The artwork may be displayed in just about any space inside the building. It features its own sales gallery as well as a studio and artist residence. The challenge of this project is the long, narrow site constraints and how to accomodate a diverse mix of functions with circulation.

The design is a study of Richard Meier’s work. Structurally, the building follows a strict grid of rounded columns. One of the main ideas of the design is the atrium which penetrates the building from bottom to top. It curves in different levels to create a sculptural form of space. The space itself can exhibit larger and taller scales of art work. It also functions as an activity space and educational space.

The building is located in the SoHo district of New York City. The project goal was to design a one artist museum for the work of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. Throughout Kusama’s career she has worked in a wide variety of media and scales, including painting, collage, sculpture, performance art and environmental installations, most of which exhibit interest in psychadelic colors, repetition and pattern.

The Whole Body Center is different from a regular gymnasium, because it gives opportunities to people to do aerobic exercises in a natural way. Rock climbing and swimming are both ancient sports that happen in nature. These activities represent the adventurous attitude of human beings. In order to hold the original passions, the Whole Body Center was designed as an inner world that brings people back to nature.

The “water curtain cave is a poetic natural scene that integrates earth and water. Two elements: rock (cave) and glass curtain wall (waterfall) compose the space. On one hand, the cave is the heart of the building and holds rock climbing, a swimming pool, wellness center and hot tub. It is a warm, vibrant and soothing environment. While the outside of the cave is cooler, quieter, and lighter.

Gaps and holes are two kinds of openings applied in the caves lighting design. The geometry of the holes are traced from a stone. The small holes have the same geometry and size, but are randomly placed based on an evenly arranged grid. Larger holes are created by connecting small holes. The stone gaps indicate circulations below. Pinwheel design adds movements and dynamism to the space.

A minimalist facade design hints the purity of inner spaces and shows the personality of the building. The translucency of the curtain walls obscures activities inside and creates a mysterious yet intriguing experience for pedestrians outside.
