Whole Body Center

Kansas City, MO Fourth Year Project Manko Competition 1st Prize The Whole Body Center is different from a regular gymnasium, because it gives opportunities to people to do aerobic exercises in a natural way. Rock climbing and swimming are both ancient sports that happen in nature. These activities represent the adventurous attitude of human beings. In order to hold the original passions, the Whole Body Center was designed as an inner world that brings people back to nature.

Gaps and holes are two kinds of openings applied in the caves lighting design. The geometry of the holes are traced from a stone. The small holes have the same geometry and size, but are randomly placed based on an evenly arranged grid. Larger holes are created by connecting small holes. The stone gaps indicate circulations below. Pinwheel design adds movements and dynamism to the space.

A minimalist facade design hints the purity of inner spaces and shows the personality of the building. The translucency of the curtain walls obscures activities inside and creates a mysterious yet intriguing experience for pedestrians outside.
