DEVELOPMENT OF THE DOCKS

The southern part of the site, adjacent to the new municipal building, is a space under a bridge approximately 400 metres long. These under-bridge spaces are currently enclosed by fencing. These under-bridge spaces are potential public activity spaces that could provide recreation for the surrounding residents and commuters, but they are occupied by littered autochthonous vegetation.

I selected the NO.08 site “Canning Town Station” for further study.

The site is located near the canning town station, it is a linear way starts from the canning town station and end up at the Royal Victoria Docks, where the new city hall locates. It is 1 kilometres long. The north part of the walkway is next to the DLR train track. And the south part is under the West Silvertown viaduct.

Palimpsest mapping shows information as I walk along this linear site. Including the plants I saw, and the walking experience, they were overlapping on a map by photos and sketches

In order to solve the three problems of noise, water pollution and insufficient light, the following solutions are proposed:

The above three solutions are integrated to create an out-door public space under the bridge, that is and self-sufficient in electricity and water energy. The next step is to combine these sustainable facilities with outdoor events to create an public welcomed, safe, multi-functional linear space.

Plant Microbial Fuel Cell (P-MFC) is a technology of living plants generate electricity. This technology was developed at Wageningen University and was patented in 2007.

A plant produces organic material through photosynthesis. Part of this organic material is used by the plant for its own growth, but not everything is used by the plant. This remaining part is excreted via the roots to the soil. In the soil, around the roots of the plant, bacteria break down the organic material. In this degradation process electrons are released as a waste product. The P-MFC technology ensures that we can use these electrons as electricity.
