JUST THE BEGINNING... Whether you’re new to uni or not, most people will have heard of Freshers Week. At the University of Hull we like to do things a little differently! A FESTIVAL FOR EVERYONE Last year we introduced WelcomeFest, ‘A festival of Welcome for everyone studying at the University of Hull’. If you’ve been to V, Glastonbury or Leeds Festival, you’ll understand the comparisons to WelcomeFest. We have thousands of people from all over the world, of all ages, with every different kind of music taste, fashion sense and personality, meeting in one place with one thing in mind: to kick-start their academic year with a bang, meet new people and have fun. IT’S YOUR EXPERIENCE WelcomeFest was introduced last year following feedback from thousands of students past and present. We asked them what they liked, didn’t like and wanted us to improve about their welcome to University. We’ve continued to listen to your feedback and this year have introduced new things to ensure that we continue to deliver a WelcomeFest that is right for you. ACTION-FILLED, SUPER-CHILLED Whether you want a WelcomeFest that’s non-stop action, or more of a chilled out experience, with our wide range of events you can plan your WelcomeFest, your way. STAY IN THE KNOW Remember to take this booklet with you to uni so that you don’t miss a thing and bookmark hullstudent.com so you can keep up to date with any new additions to the programme.

what's new? Every year we ask for your feedback on WelcomeFest. Over 1000 students filled in our survey and we’ve made sure that we’ve built your feedback into our plan for 2015. Here’s just a few examples of what you said and how we’ve Tickets were sold out so I couldn’t changed things: attend the event I wanted to

I was busy when events were taking place. We’ve listened to your feedback and revamped our events schedule to ensure that there’s a wide range of activities throughout the morning, afternoon and evening. We hope that this gives you even more opportunities to get involved and pick a few events to attend. We’ve also scheduled our popular events multiple times to make you don’t miss out. You didn’t feel that Freshers Wristbands were value for money and some of your friends didn’t buy them so you didn’t attend the events you wanted to as a group.

This year we have changed how we ticket our events. For all of our events tickets will be available on the door. This means that you do not need a wristband to access our events. You can guarantee your entry (before 10pm only) to three of our most popular events by buying a WelcomeFest or Infinity Card. These cards also offer free entry to up to 15 events and a priority card-holder entry queue. See ads in this guide for full details. We’ also extended the capacity of our most popular events – the Welcome Party and Tower so that even more of you can party with us.

We’ve introduced a new plan this year called ‘WelcomeFest: Your Way’. This three-tiered system allows you to select the card that suits you and even better they start at £25 - over £10 cheaper than a wristband in previous years. They also come with some exclusive added extras that you can’t get anywhere else. Check out the ads in this guide for more details or visit www.hullstudent.com/wfyw

what's new? It was refreshing to see lots of events that didn’t include drinking in the schedule Our non-alcohol events were really popular last year. We took hundreds of students to everywhere from the Deep to the KC Stadium and even held a roller disco on campus! We know that some of you like to go out for a drink with friends, some don’t and some of you just want a change from club nights so our schedule aims to offer you a wide range of experiences to suit everyone.

Having a Welcome talk from us in your first lectures of the year made you feel more informed about who we are and what we do. We’ve taken on more FestStaff this year so we can deliver even more talks and help as many of you as possible understand what your Union offers you.

We would like more variety of events throughout the week We’ve taken your feedback on board and introduced some brand new events for 2015. You can find them throughout this guide by looking for the blue star icon. We’re confident that there really is something for everyone so you have the best chance to meet new people and start the year with some fun new experiences.

The family fun day was a great way to meet other student parents and to show our families where we were studying We were delighted to see so many of you at this event last year and can’t wait to see even more of you here for this event on the 20th September this year.

Have a great WelcomeFest and remember to look out for this year’s survey, where you can tell us what you thought (and maybe even win an awesome prize).

Give It A Go is an activities programme full of fantastic one off events. Try new things, make new friends and discover new places with no regular commitment required. Just buy a ticket, come along and enjoy. We have three different kinds of GIAG activity that you can take part in.

EXPLORE Events that help you discover your new (or not so new) part of the world. From what’s in your back garden to a bit further afield. We will help you explore your new neck of the woods. Expect events to celebrate Hull’s status of City of Culture 2017 and trips to neighbouring towns and cities. MEET We create events to help you meet new people and opportunities for you to create new memories with those you have already met. ACTIVE Get those endorphins flowing with some physical activity. Don’t worry we’re not expecting you to work up a proper sweat. Expect roller skating and Go Karting. No experience necessary! TICKETS Did you know that Tickets for all our events can be purchased Give It A Go online at www.hullstudent.com/store or at tickets are subsidised the reception. The Give It A Go programme up to 50% of the is subsidised by the Union, so tickets for actual event cost? each event are limited. inside your union

Eat, Drink, Enjoy Named after the journalist and former University of Hull student, John McCarthy (affectionately referred to as the Johnny Mac by students) is open from 8.30am until 3pm every day for breakfast, lunch and coffee. In the evening it hosts everything from Cheeky Mondays to comedy, open mic nights and much more. During Tower and Brassick nights, Johnny Mac becomes Room Two, and it is also available for student society events most nights of the week, making it HUU’s most diverse venue.

Sanctuary Bar is the main bar at Hull University Union, and also happens to have the largest beer garden in Hull! Open from 8.30am until 11pm every day with great prices on food and drinks; it’s the place to go after a hard day at uni. Sanctuary also shows all the major live sporting events and hosts our ever-popular Karaoke night every Thursday and the legendary HUU Big Quiz with big cash prizes every Sunday.

Our very own £3.6 million club right here on campus. Winner of BEDA student nightclub of the year in 2013, as well as the prestigious Best Bar None Gold Award for four consecutive years. Asylum is the envy of other students’ unions and leads the way for student club night experiences, hosting favourites Tower and Brassick every week – Hull’s biggest and longest running student nights! Fridays in 2015 see the introduction of ‘The 411’ - our brand new urban club night.

THE MARQUEE We’re bringing in a huge 675 square metre outdoor marquee just for WelcomeFest, giving us plenty more space for festival frolickings! The marquee will host all of the fairs as well as the super exciting Laser Tag and Roller Disco and even Movie Nights. We’re parking the marquee right outside of the Sanctuary terrace so you can easily hop from one event to the next.

COMING SOON... Over summer we’ve been busy updating your Students’ Union to make sure that you have a place on campus to call your own. Everything that we do is based on your feedback so we’re sure that you’re going to love our fresh look and exciting new offer. Expect places to eat, spaces to meet and new ways to get to know us and everything that we do. Check out hullstudent.com for sneak peaks as work progresses.
